The mathematical model of an aerobic culture of recombinant yeast presented in work by Zhang et al. (1997) is given by a differential-algebraic system. The classical nonlinear observer algorithms are generally based on ordinary differential equations. In this paper, first we extend the nonlinear observer synthesis to differential-algebraic dynamical systems. Next, we apply this observer theory to the mathematical model proposed in Zhang et al. (1997). More precisely, based on the total cell concentration and the recombinant protein concentration, the observer gives the online estimation of the glucose, the ethanol, the plasmid-bearing cell concentration and a parameter that represents the probability of plasmid loss of plasmid-bearing cells. A new scheme for integrated optical fluorescence sensing is presented. The principle is based on a planar waveguide containing multiple sensing units, each consisting of a single-pad grating coupler structure. Single-pad means that all the following functions are incorporated in one single pad: laser light input, excitation of the labeled analyte molecules, efficient collection of the emitted fluorescent light into the waveguide, background suppression, and coupling the guided wave out to the detector. It is shown that an SIS epidemic model with a non-constant contact rate may have multiple stable equilibria, a backward bifurcation and hysteresis. The consequences for disease control are discussed. We propose calibration methods for nonlinear mixed effects models. Using an estimator whose asymptotic properties are known, four different statistics are used to perform the calibration. Dose-response models are intensively used in herbicide bioassays. Despite recent advancements in the development of new herbicides, statistical analyses are commonly based on asymptotic approximations that are sometimes poor. This paper presents the use of recent results in higher order asymptotics for likelihood-based inference in nonlinear regression. The methods presented provide accurate approximation for the distribution of test statistics and for prediction limits. The potency of antiretroviral agents in AIDS clinical trials can be assessed on the basis of an early viral response such as viral decay rate or change in viral load (number of copies of HIV RNA) of the plasma. Linear, parametric nonlinear, and semiparametric nonlinear mixed‐effects models have been proposed to estimate viral decay rates in viral dynamic models. However, before applying these models to clinical data, a critical question that remains to be addressed is whether these models produce coherent estimates of viral decay rates, and if not, which model is appropriate and should be used in practice. In this paper, we applied these models to data from an AIDS clinical trial of potent antiviral treatments and found significant incongruity in the estimated rates of reduction in viral load. Simulation studies indicated that reliable estimates of viral decay rate were obtained by using the parametric and semiparametric nonlinear mixed‐effects models. Our analysis also indicated that the decay rates estimated by using linear mixed‐effects models should be interpreted differently from those estimated by using nonlinear mixed‐effects models. The semiparametric nonlinear mixed‐effects model is preferred to other models because arbitrary data truncation is not needed. Plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum is a single cell visible by unaided eye. The plasmodium's foraging behaviour is interpreted in terms of computation. Input data is a configuration of nutrients, result of computation is a network of plasmodium's cytoplasmic tubes spanning sources of nutrients. Tsuda et al. (2004) experimentally demonstrated that basic logical gates can be implemented in foraging behaviour of the plasmodium. We simplify the original designs of the gates and show - in computer models - that the plasmodium is capable for computation of two-input two-output gate 〈x, y〉 → 〈xy, x + y〉 and three-input two-output . We assemble the gates in a binary one-bit adder and demonstrate validity of the design using computer simulation. 相似文献

We compared growth patterns of invasive and native populations of purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) while varying water and nutrient levels. We examined three life-history traits (height, number of branches, and the size of largest leaf) during the growth period adopting a nonlinear mixed effects model. Invasive populations were found to be slower in shoot elongation but grew to be taller than native populations. Invasive populations produced more branches than natives only in the high water, high nutrient treatment. Invasive populations had a similar increase in the size of the largest leaf compared to natives, but ultimately produced a greater size of largest leaf than natives. Invasive populations were found to display a greater vegetative expansion, but this was not strongly affected by our treatments. 相似文献
