Summary A review is made of the recent work to assess the prospects of regulating urea hydrolysis and nitrification processes in soils by employing chemicals that can retard urea hydrolysis and nitrification. The possible benefits from control of nitrogen transformations in terms of conserving and enhancing fertilizer nitrogen efficiency for crop production and the problems associated with their use with regard to N metabolism of plants have also been discussed with examples. Prospects of using cheap and effective indigenous materials and chemicals for control of urea hydrolysis and nitrification under specific soil situations appear eminent in improving the fertilizer nitrogen efficiency. Urease inhibitors may be helpful in reducing problems associated with ammonia volatilization if this is not offset by leaching of urea. On the other hand retardation of nitrification appears useful in reducing losses that accompany nitrification due to leaching and denitrification, and with the plants that metabolize equally well with relatively higher amounts of NH4–N may be more effective in improving the utilization of fertilizer N under these situations.  相似文献

The clinical and cellular phenotype of ataxia telangiectasia (AT) has been extensively documented in numerous patients of different ethnic groups and is characterized by several specific laboratory hallmarks, such as chromosomal instability, profound radiosensitivity and radioresistant DNA synthesis. Several recent reports have, however, shown variations on this theme. This article describes 2 Turkish siblings with AT, who showed a typical but somewhat more prolonged clinical course of the disease and altered characteristics of fibroblasts cells, compared to the ‘classical’ AT cellular phenotype. Fibroblasts strains derived from these patients showed a normal cellular life span, moderate degrees of chromosomal instability and sensitivity to the lethal effects of X-rays and neocarzinostatin, and lack of radioresistant DNA synthesis.

A compilation of the literature on ‘AT variants’ and ‘AT-like’ syndromes shows that in addition to the internal variability of AT, this disease occupies a limited segment within a large spectrum of clinical and cellular features, which are common to a variety of syndromes. Each of these syndromes covers a different segment in this spectrum. The genetic basis of this family of disorders might be complex.  相似文献

Neuropathy target esterase (NTE) is the proposed target site for the mechanism of initiation of the so-called organophosphorus-induced delayed polyneuropathy (OPIDP). NTE is operationally defined in this article as the phenylvalerate esterase activity which is resistant to inhibition by 40 μM paraoxon and sensitive to 250 μM mipafox. Soluble (S-NTE) and particulate (P-NTE) forms of NTE had first been identified in hen sciatic nerve [E. Vilanova, J. Barril, V. Carrera, and M. C. Pellín (1990). J. Neurochem., 55, 1258–1265]. P-NTE and S-NTE showed different sensitivities to the inhibition by several organophosphorus compounds over a range of inhibitor concentrations for a 30 or 120 minute fixed inhibition time at 37°C. S-NTE was less sensitive to the inhibition by O,O′-diisopropyl phosphorofluoridate (DFP), hexyl 2,5-dichlorophenyl phosphoramidate (H-DCP), and mipafox than P-NTE and brain NTE, while the opposite was true for O,S-dimethyl phosphoroamidothioate (methamidophos). For each of the four inhibitors assayed, S-NTE showed two components of different sensitivity according to the inhibition curves fitted with exponential models. However, the inhibition of P-NTE by mipafox, DFP, and HDCP did not show the presence of a considerable proportion of a second component. The kinetics of heat inactivation showed that P-NTE inactivated faster and to a greater extent than S-NTE. It is concluded that (1) sciatic nerve S-NTE is more different from brain NTE than P-NTE; (2) P-NTE and S-NTE have different sensitivities to the inhibition by the studied organophosphorous compounds; (3) the inhibition curves suggest that S-NTE has two different enzymatic components while these are not so evident for P-NTE. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the partial consumption of malic acid in a semi-synthetic medium by Schizosaccharomyces yeast under wine-making conditions. The aim was to control the extent of deacidification by stopping the activity of Schizosaccharomyces by the addition of Saccharomyces yeast at different delayed intervals of time. This was thought possible because the Schizosaccharomyces yeasts are much more slower than the Saccharomyces yeasts and may be inhibited by the latter. In fact, the opposite was observed. Schizosaccharomyces exhibited a amensal effect against Saccharomyces: the Saccharomyces growth was inhibited by Schizosaccharomyces, this inhibition being proportional to the Schizosaccharomyces concentration, reversible, and sensitive to temperature. Such interactions similar to a killer effect have not been described before. At the same time a competition towards sugar was noted, being negative for Schizosaccharomyces since these yeasts have slower metabolic rates. Nevertheless, total demalication was nearly always possible because sufficient concentrations of Schizosaccharomyces were always reached. The delayed inoculation of Saccharomyces after Schizosaccharomyces was not a good solution to obtain partial deacidification.  相似文献

Brain computation, in the early visual system, is often considered as a hierarchical process in which features extracted in a given sensory relay are not present in previous stages of integration. In particular, orientation preference and its fine tuning selectivity are functional properties shared by most cortical cells and they are not observed at the preceding geniculate stage. A classical problem is identifying the mechanisms and circuitry underlying these computations. Several organizational principles have been proposed, giving different weights to the feedforward thalamocortical drive or to intracortical recurrent architectures. Within this context, an important issue is whether intracortical inhibition is fundamental for the genesis of stimulus selectivity, or rather normalizes spike response tuning with respect to other features such as stimulus strength or contrast, without influencing the selectivity bias and preference expressed in the excitatory input alone. We review here experimental observations concerning the presence or absence of inhibitory input evoked by non-preferred orientation/directions. Intracellular current clamp and voltage clamp recordings are analyzed in the light of new methods allowing us (1) to increase the visibility of inhibitory input, and (2) to continuously measure the visually evoked dynamics of input conductances. We conclude that there exists a diversity of synaptic input combinations generating the same profile of spike-based orientation selectivity, and that this diversity most likely reflects anatomical non-homogeneities in input sampling provided by the local context of the columnar and lateral intracortical network in which the considered cortical cell is embedded.  相似文献

The effects of phenol, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TCB) on the biodegradation kinetics of the conventional activated sludge system (CASS) and the selector activated sludge system (SASS) were investigated. Experiments were carried out using a respirometric method on unacclimated biomass from two lab-scale systems that were operated with the sludge age of 8 days. Toxicity of the test compounds for both reactors were arranged according to EC50 (effective concentration) values in order as: 1,2,4-TCB > 2,4-DCP > 2-CP > phenol. All selected test compounds induced higher inhibition effect in the CASS. The SASS appeared to reduce inhibition effect in comparison to the CASS, by 21.36%, 66.95%, 64.37% and 33.33% for phenol, 2-CP, 2,4-DCP and 1,2,4-TCB, respectively. Consequently, the SASS may be recommended as a promising configuration alternative for the waste streams containing toxic compounds.  相似文献

Adenine, cytidine and guanosine nucleotides were supplied to cultures of Rhodopseudomonas capsulata under aerobic heterotrophic and phototrophic growth conditions. Aerobic growth is not affected by exogenous nucleotides (up to 10 mM) whereas phototrophic growth is strongly inhibited by adenine but not by guanosine or cytidine nucleotides. During phototrophic growth there is an inverse relationship between the concentration of exogenous adenine nucleotides and photopigment synthesis. There are no statistically significant differences between the inhibitory effect of AMP, ADP and ATP on the growth rate and bacteriochlorophyll synthesis since adenine nucleotides are incorporated into the cell as AMP by means of the phosphoribosyl transferase system.  相似文献

Abstract Thiosulfate and tetrathionate oxidation activity of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were found to be absent in iron-growth cell as well as in the cells grown anaerobically on elemental sulfur. While the thiosulfate oxidase activity was absent in the cell-free extract of the above cells, the activity of rhodanese was present irrespective of the culture condition of T. ferrooxidans . It is thus conceivable that rhodanese is not involved in thiosulfate metabolism. During growth in presence of ferrous sulfate plus elemental sulfur, the thiosulfate/tetrathionate oxidation activity was absent till the oxidation of ferrous iron was complete and the cells harvested only in the latter period acquired the thiosulfate/tetrathionate oxidation activity. Thus it becomes evident that the inhibition of thiosulfate and tetrathionate oxidation is solely due to presence of ferrous iron.  相似文献
