We previously reported a new in vivo model named as "GFP/CCl(4) model" for monitoring the transdifferentiation of green fluorescent protein (GFP) positive bone marrow cell (BMC) into albumin-positive hepatocyte under the specific "niche" made by CCl(4) induced persistent liver damage, but the subpopulation which BMCs transdifferentiate into hepatocytes remains unknown. Here we developed a new monoclonal antibody, anti-Liv8, using mouse E 11.5 fetal liver as an antigen. Anti-Liv8 recognized both hematopoietic progenitor cells in fetal liver at E 11.5 and CD45-positive hematopoietic cells in adult bone marrow. We separated Liv8-positive and Liv8-negative cells and then transplanted these cells into a continuous liver damaged model. At 4 weeks after BMC transplantation, more efficient repopulation and transdifferentiation of BMC into hepatocytes were seen with Liv8-negative cells. These findings suggest that the subpopulation of Liv8-negative cells includes useful cells to perform cell therapy on repair damaged liver.  相似文献

Resource partitioning in a community of diurnal arboreal mammalsconsisting of the lion-tailed macaque Macaca silenus, bonnetmacaque (BM) Macaca radiata, Nilgiri langur Semnopithecus johnii,and the Indian giant squirrel Ratufa indica of the Western Ghats,southern India, was studied. Differences in their diet, verticalstratification, food resource niche breadth, niche overlap,and behavioral interactions were examined. Resource partitioningwas through differential habitat use, resource use, and verticalstratification. Of the four species, the BM was not a residentspecies and made frequent forays into evergreen forest fromthe adjacent deciduous forest during the flowering season ofCullenia exarillata and fruiting season of Ficus microcarpa.The macaques had narrower niches, and the langur and the squirrelhad wider niches. Niche overlap was highest between the twomacaques. Overlap among the study species was particularly pronouncedduring the flowering of C. exarillata. There was significantcorrelation between niche overlap and intolerance among thestudy species. Certain species pairs showed little or no mutualintolerance despite high overlap. Cooperative interactions suchas alarm calls occurred more frequently among the resident species.Interaction matrices revealed an underlying pattern of interspecificdominance hierarchy, with the BM dominating over the other threespecies. Our study suggests that the BM do not coexist withthe other three because of high overlap with its congener andlow occurrence of cooperative interactions.  相似文献

Many studies have highlighted the relationship between nutrient fluctuations and enrichment in the process of plant invasion. However, invasion may be also associated with conditions of plant stress, either nutrient depletion or toxicity, in the environment. In this study, we investigate the possible role of nutrient stress in the invasion of Hieracium lepidulum (Stenstroem) Omang, in South Island, New Zealand. We do this by comparing several performance attributes, and their plasticity, for H. lepidulum and a number of co-occurring species, across a series of nutrient depletion and toxicity tests. H. lepidulum had intermediate yields, high root:shoot ratios and high tissue nutrient contents at control nutrient concentrations. H. lepidulum differed in edaphic tolerance from all but Chionochloa flavescens var. brevis, in being insensitive to nutrient dilutions other than nitrogen. The significance of performance in terms of edaphic tolerance and adaptations are discussed. Intermediate yields at control nutrient levels suggest that H. lepidulum should not be competitive compared to high yielding species including Agrostis stolonifera and Poa cita, but should be competitive with lower yielding Coprosma rugosa and C. flavescens var. brevis. Conversely, significant yield decreases under nitrogen limitation stress suggests that H. lepidulum will not likely occupy very nutrient poor sites. H. lepidulum, along with C. flavescens var. brevis, were found to be tolerant of ammonium as an alternative source of nitrogen, while other species were not. These data suggest that H. lepidulum and C. flavescens var. brevis would be relatively tolerant of the stresses associated with acidic soils compared to the other species, but not to stresses associated with absolute shortage of nitrogen. Combined results point to the likely occurrence of H. lepidulum at sites of intermediate fertility. The possible roles of ammonium stress and disturbance reliance in further defining H. lepidulum ecology is discussed.  相似文献

Human predator‐prey relationships changed dramatically in the Mediterranean Basin between 250,000 and 9,000 years ago. Many of these changes can be linked to increases in Paleolithic human population densities. Small game species are particularly diagnostic of increases in human hunting pressure and are a major source of evidence for demographic change after 40–45,000 years ago. Biomass-corrected data on prey choice also indicate increasing use of those species that possess higher reproductive efficiencies. Step-wise, apparently irreversible shifts in human predatory niche are apparent in the Mediterranean Basin, beginning with the earliest Upper Paleolithic in the east and spreading westward. Evidence of demographic pressure and greater use of resilient prey populations is followed by technological innovations to exploit these animals more efficiently. The zooarchaeological findings suggest that Middle and Lower Paleolithic reproductive units probably were not robust at the micropopulation scale, due to the rather narrow set of behavioral responses that characterized social groups at the time, and thus localized extinctions at the micropopulation level were likely to have been common. Upper Paleolithic groups were the quintessential colonizers and, in addition, uniquely good at holding on to habitat gained. Upper Paleolithic archaeological “cultures” had shorter histories of existence than those of earlier periods, but they were even more widespread geographically. The demographic robustness of the Upper Paleolithic systems may stem from wholesale strategies for evening-out or sharing risk and volatility in technology. Micropopulations were larger and often denser on landscapes, more connected via cooperative ties, and thus more robust.  相似文献

Because of their particular biology, seed beetles exhibit a strong relationship with their larval host plants. In Europe, however, field data have long been scarce and unreliable. The results of Legume seed collections of nearly 1,000 samples belonging to 292 species from various locations in Europe are summarized. The status of current Bruchidius species groups is amended on morphological and phylogenetic bases. Recent advances in the knowledge of phylogenetic structures of both Fabaceae and Bruchinae provide a new picture of Bruchinae–Fabaceae interactions. It reveals a certain level of host conservatism. The hypothesis of radiative adaptation seems the most compatible with observed data.According to currently accepted phylogenies, seed beetles constitute a sister group to Sagrinae within the family Chrysomelidae (see discussion in Lingafelter and Pakaluk 1997). For convenience, we have, however, retained the name Bruchidae.  相似文献

Determinants of local abundance and range size in forest vascular plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Aim For a large set of forest herbs we tested: (1) whether there is a positive relationship between local abundance and geographical range size; (2) whether abundance or range size are affected by the niche breadths of species or niche availability; and (3) whether these are affected by the species life‐history traits. Location Northwestern Germany. Methods We measured abundance as mean density in 22 base‐rich deciduous forests and recorded range size as area of occupancy on four different spatial scales (local to national). Niche breadth was expressed in terms of habitat specificity (specialists, generalists) and of the ability to grow across a broad range of soil pH. The species’ pH niche position was used as a measure of the importance of habitat availability. As life‐history traits we used diaspore mass and number, plant height, seed longevity, lifespan/clonality, pollination mode, dispersal capability and flowering time. Results There were mainly no positive relationships between the abundance of species and their range size, as tested across species and across phylogenetically independent contrasts. Forest specialists were generally distributed less widely than generalists, but habitat specificity was not related to local abundance. Species with a broader pH niche breadth were more common, but the positive relationships between niche breadth and abundance or range size disappeared when accounting for sample size effects. Clonal species with few and heavy diaspores were most abundant, as well as early‐flowering species and those lacking dispersal structures. Local and regional range size were determined largely by habitat availability, while national range was positively affected by plant height and diaspore mass. Main conclusions Different processes determine the local density of species and their range size. Abundance within habitat patches appears to be related mainly to the species life histories, especially to their capacity for extensive clonal reproduction, whereas range size appears to be determined strongly by the availability of suitable habitat.  相似文献

The Common Five-Lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus), Southeastern Five-Lined Skink (P. inexpectatus), and Broadheaded Skink (P. laticeps) are all found in forested ecosystems of the southeastern United States and occur in apparent sympatry. No aspect of their ecology has been quantitatively shown to be different. Differences in their natural history, such as northern extent of geographic range, observations of differences in habitat preference, and differing physiological responses to temperature, implicate the thermal environment as a potential niche dimension by which these organisms partition resources. Here we show that the northernmost extent of each species' range can be adequately discriminated by temperature extremes and that their preferred habitats differ in canopy cover, mean temperature, and daily maximum temperatures. These differences are supported by observations in the field. Based upon these findings and observations, we conclude that these species may be able to exist in such close proximity due to differences in their thermal niche, particularly the two like-sized species, P. fasciatus and P. inexpectatus. P. laticeps is a much larger lizard as an adult and functionally coexists with its congeners, potentially by partitioning resources along a different axis.  相似文献

To compare community assemblage patterns in tropical northeastern and subtropical central eastern Australia across selected gradients and scales, we tested the relationship of species traits with phylogenetic structure, and niche breadth. We considered phylogenetic relationships across current‐day species in assemblages in relation to rain forest species pool sizes, and trait values along gradients including elevation and latitude. Trait values were quantified across scales for seed size, leaf area, wood density and maximum height at maturity for 1137 species and 596 assemblages using trait gradient analysis (TGA). Local assemblages of subtropical species had narrower trait ranges, and higher niche breadth values than corresponding assemblages of tropical species. Leaf size and seed size increased at low latitudes, and community phylogenetic structure was most strongly correlated with seed traits in the subtropics, reflecting dispersal and re‐colonization processes. Elevation accounted for little of the variance in community phylogenetic structure or trait variation across local and regional scales. Stable moist forest areas retained many species from ancestral rain forest lineages across a range of temporally conserved habitats; species within assemblages were less related; and rain forest assemblages had higher functional diversity, but lower niche breadth. This suggests that on average, assemblages of species in stable areas had greater trait variation and narrower distributions. Historic and recent rain forest contraction and re‐expansion can result in recolonized areas that are dominated by species that are more related (phylogenetically) than by chance, have smaller, widely dispersed seeds, and greater niche breadth (broader distributions).  相似文献

Successful establishment of a biological control agent is a prerequisite for effective reduction of an invasive weed. Niche-based species distribution models can generate valuable information about the potential spread of a biological control agent and help to predict its distribution. The Maximum Entropy Species Distribution Model was used in our study to predict distributions of the leaf beetle Gratiana boliviana Spaeth (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and its target weed, tropical soda apple (TSA), Solanum viarum Dunal (Solanaceae). The specific objectives of this study were to (1) assess the climatic suitability for establishment of this insect across the invasive range of the weed by overlapping predicted current distributions and, (2) examine the niche-related restriction in distribution of the insect by visualising the predictive niche in multivariate space. Accuracy of predicted distributions was tested using binomial tests and area under the curve scores. The results of statistical tests confirmed that the predictions were significantly better than random. The predictions indicated that the potential distribution of G. boliviana in the USA will be more restricted than that of its host plant. Consequently, the beetle's ability to inflict damage to TSA will be geographically limited. Niche visualisation, using a PCA-based analysis, provided evidence of the niche imposed restriction on the distribution of G. boliviana. Overall, this study proposes a new approach for understanding the spatial limitations in establishment of biological control agents, allowing researchers to establish more realistic expectations of success.  相似文献

The amount of nitrogen required to complete an insect's life cycle may vary greatly among species that have evolved distinct life history traits. Myrmecophilous caterpillars in the Lycaenidae family produce nitrogen-rich exudates from their dorsal glands to attract ants for protection, and this phenomenon has been postulated to shape the caterpillar's host-plant choice. Accordingly, it was postulated that evolution towards myrmecophily in Lycaenidae is correlated with the utilization of nitrogen-rich host plants. Although our results were consistent with the evolutionary shifts towards high-nutrient host plants serving as exaptation for the evolution of myrmecophily in lycaenids, the selection of nitrogen-rich host plants was not confined to lycaenids. Butterfly species in the nonmyrmecophilous family Pieridae also preferred nitrogen-rich host plants. Thus, we conclude that nitrogen is an overall important component in the caterpillar diet, independent of the level of myrmecophily, as nitrogen can enhance the overall insect fitness and survival. However, when nitrogen can be obtained through alternative means, as in socially parasitic lycaenid species feeding on ant brood, the selective pressure for maintaining the use of nutrient-rich host plants is relaxed, enabling the colonization of nitrogen-poor host plants.  相似文献
