We have previously reported that the isolated frog corneal epithelium (a Cl-secreting epithelium) has a large diffusional water permeability (Pdw 1.8×10–4 cm/s). We now report that the presence of Cl in the apical-side bathing solution increases the diffusional water flux, Jdw (in both directions) by 63% from 11.3 to 18.4 l min–1 · cm–2 with 60 mm [Cl] exerting the maximum effect. The presence of Cl in the basolateral-side bathing solution had no effect on the water flux. In Cl-free solutions amphotericin B increased Jdw by 29% but only by 3% in Cl-rich apical-side bathing solution, suggesting that in Cl-rich apical side bathing solution, the apical barrier is no longer rate limiting. Apical Br (75 mm) also increased Jdw by 68%. The effect of Cl on Jdw was observed within 1 min after its addition to the apicalside bathing solution. HgCl2 (0.5 mm) reduced the Cl-increased Pdw by 31%. The osmotic permeability (Pf) was also measured under an osmotic gradient yielding values of 0.34 and 2.88 (x 10–3 cm/s) in Cl-free and Cl-rich apical-side bathing solutions respectively. It seems that apical Cl, or Cl secretion into the apical bath could activate normally present but inactive water channels. In the absence of Cl, water permeability of the apical membrane seems to be limited to the permeability of the lipid bilayer.This work was supported by National Eye Institute grants EY-00160 and EY-01867.  相似文献

The diel change in dissolved oxygen concentrations were recorded with an automated incubator containing a pulsed oxygen sensor in Sarasota Bay, Florida. The deployments occurred during a ‘pre-bloom’ period in May to June 2006, and during a harmful algal bloom dominated by Karenia brevis in September 2006. The diurnal (daylight) increase in dissolved oxygen concentrations varied from 16 to 104 μmol O2 l−1 with the corresponding nocturnal decrease in oxygen varying from 16 to 77 μmol O2 l−1. Nocturnal respiration consumed 42–113% of the diurnal net oxygen production with the minimum and maximum during the pre-bloom period. Hourly production rates closely followed fluctuations in irradiance with maximum rates in the late morning. Hourly oxygen utilization rates (community respiration) at night were highest during the first few hours after sunset.  相似文献

Despite the efforts of many natural resource professionals, wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations are expanding in many areas of the world. Although many creative techniques for controlling pig populations are being explored, trapping has been and still is the most commonly used method of population control for many public and private land managers. We conducted an observational study to examine the efficiency of 2 frequently used trap styles: a small, portable box-style trap and a larger, semi-permanent, corral-style trap. We used game cameras to examine patterns of trap entry by wild pigs around each style of trap, and we conducted a trapping session to compare trapping success between trap styles. Adult female and juvenile wild pigs entered both styles of trap more readily than did adult males, and adult males seemed particularly averse to entering box traps. Less than 10% of adult male visits to box traps resulted in entries, easily the least percentage of any class at any style of trap. Adult females entered corral traps approximately 2.2 times more often per visit than box traps and re-entered corral traps >2 times more frequently. Juveniles entered and re-entered both box and corral traps at similar rates. Overall (all-class) entry-per-visit rates at corral traps (0.71) were nearly double that of box traps (0.37). Subsequent trapping data supported these preliminary entry data; the capture rate for corral traps was >4 times that of box traps. Our data suggest that corral traps are temporally and economically superior to box traps with respect to efficiency; that is, corral traps effectively trap more pigs per trap night at a lower cost per pig than do box traps. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Using corn germ (CG) instead of corn grain could maintain dairy cow performance and might increase the efficiency of human food production. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing corn grain with CG on the performance, nutrient intake, and digestibility of dairy cows. It also aimed to investigate the effect of CG on the efficiency of human food production in high-producing Holstein dairy cows in early lactation. Nine multiparous Holstein cows with 65.6 ± 8.5 DIM, milk yield of 55.6 ± 4.5 kg/d, and body weight of 611.3 ± 43.3 kg (mean ± SD) were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Treatments were (1) control treatment (CT, diet contains corn grain), (2) alternative treatment (AT, diet where corn grain was replaced with CG), and (3) balanced treatment (BT, diet where corn grain was replaced with CG but with the same energy content as CT). Control and balanced diets were isoenergetic (6.61 MJ/kg of DM); however, AT had higher energy (6.77 MJ/kg of DM). Treatments had no effect on dry and organic matter intake. NDF intake, however, was higher in CG diets compared with CT (P = 0.0001). Total-tract digestibility of DM tended to be reduced (P = 0.08), and OM digestibility was reduced (P = 0.05) by the inclusion of CG in diets. Whole and energy-corrected milk production were greater in AT compared with CT and BT (P < 0.05). Milk yield was similar in cows fed CT and BT. Treatments had no effect on milk composition or feed efficiency. Diet CT, when compared with CG diets, had lower efficiency in terms of human-edible feed conversion efficiency (HeFCE) and net food production (P < 0.05). Diet BT had greater HeFCE and net production of human-edible CP than AT (P < 0.05). Plasma BHBA, non-esterified fatty acids, and glucose concentrations were not affected by treatments, but plasma cholesterol was higher in cows that consumed CG diets (P = 0.04). The results indicate that, in high-producing early lactation dairy cows fed high concentrate diets, net food protein production can be substantially improved without lowering milk production through the reduction of dietary starch from 30.2 to 24.8% by replacing corn grain with CG.  相似文献

斜纹夜蛾Spodoptera litura(Fabricius)是重要的农业害虫之一。为了控制斜纹夜蛾,使农作物免受危害,前人研究了化学防治、杀虫灯和性诱捕器诱杀、植物诱集和驱避、转基因抗虫品种以及生物防治对其种群控制作用。化学防治在压制斜纹夜蛾种群暴发、减轻农作物遭受损失方面作出了巨大贡献,但日益增强的抗药性、农药残留造成的环境污染、对天敌的杀伤和人畜安全的影响等问题不断受到关注,人们开始对该害虫的一些新的治理策略进行了探讨。在这些无公害的控制技术中,植物诱集和生物防治是2种值得提倡的有效措施。不少植物源提取物和昆虫生长调节剂对斜纹夜蛾幼虫具有极好的效果,是值得研发的2种新型生物制剂。香芋和蓖麻等诱集作物对斜纹夜蛾有较好的诱集效果,如果能将作物诱集和释放天敌昆虫或病原微生物制剂结合,使之成为一套有效的生态控制体系,将可现实斜纹夜蛾种群的持续控制。  相似文献

在32℃培养条件下,实验研究了5种淡水常见浮游轮虫的种群增长参数。通过编制生命表计算其内禀增长率rm(h-1)、净生殖力(R0)和世代时间T(h)分别为:萼花臂尾轮虫-0.091、14.1和34.1;壶状臂尾轮虫-0.055、6.9和38.4;角突臂尾轮虫-0.035、4.9和50.9;臂尾水轮虫-0.038、4.3和46.1以及裂足臂尾轮虫-0.017、2.1和43.7。其中,萼花臂尾轮虫内禀增长率大,繁殖率高,可作为批量培养的首选种类。    相似文献

Addition of ATP to chloroplasts causes a reversible 25–30% decrease in chlorophyll fluorescence. This quenching is light-dependent, uncoupler insensitive but inhibited by DCMU and electron acceptors and has a half-time of 3 minutes. Electron donors to Photosystem I can not overcome the inhibitory effect of DCMU, suggesting that light activation depends on the reduced state of plastoquinone. Fluorescence emission spectra recorded at ?196°C indicate that ATP treatment increases the amount of excitation energy transferred to Photosystem I. Examination of fluorescence induction curves indicate that ATP treatment decreases both the initial (Fo) and variable (Fv) fluorescence such that the ratio of Fv to the maximum (Fm) yield is unchanged. The initial sigmoidal phase of induction is slowed down by ATP treatment and is quenched 3-fold more than the exponential slow phase, the rate of which is unchanged. A plot of Fv against area above the induction curve was identical plus or minus ATP. Thus ATP treatment can alter quantal distribution between Photosystems II and I without altering Photosystem II-Photosystem II interaction. The effect of ATP strongly resembles in its properties the phosphorylation of the light-harvesting complex by a light activated, ATP-dependent protein kinase found in chloroplast membranes and could be the basis of physiological mechanisms which contribute to slow fluorescence quenching in vivo and regulate excitation energy distribution between Photosystem I and II. It is suggested that the sensor for this regulation is the redox state of plastoquinone.  相似文献

Summary In pot experiments with barley, mustard, leek, lettuce and spinach, and in a field experiment with 30 cultivars of barley uptakes of K, Mg, Ca, Na and N were studied at varying concentrations and activities of these cations in the soil solution.The sum of macro cations (K, Mg, Ca, Na) in meq per 100 g aerial plant parts were independent of the chemical composition of the soil solution, but dependent on plant species and on the N concentration in the plant.The ratios of mean net inflows of Mg, Ca and K into plants and corresponding cation activity ratios (aMg/aCa and ) in the soil solution were linearly related and highly correlated under conditions in which growth rate and/or rate of incorporation into new tissues constituted the rate determining step of cation uptake. Consequently, mean net inflows of K, Mg and Ca were independent of ion concentration and ion activity of K, Mg or Ca in the soil solution under the conditions of constant activity ratio.The results agree with the concept that plants have a finite cation uptake capacity, and that plants are in a equilibrium-like state with the activities of K, Mg, and Ca ions in the soil solution. The results indicate that both ratios and content of exchangeable cations should be considered in our evaluation of soil test data.  相似文献
