We describe a field experiment designed to evaluate indirect effects in a prey community sharing common predators. A simple prey community was mimicked with two types of artificial nests. Firstly, it was shown that predation rate increased with nest density when only a single prey was present. Secondly, it was shown that an increase in the density of one nest type increased the predation rate on another type. This is the first experimental evidence for indirect effects in vertebrate communities, which also may help to explain the strong interspecific aggression observed in some communities. In a previous treatment we had shown that there is no observer effect on nest predation in the form of density-dependent scent marking while laying out the artificial nests.  相似文献

Clutches of ground‐nesting farmland birds are often destroyed by farming operations, resulting in insufficient reproductive success and subsequently declining populations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether volunteer nest protection can enhance nest success of ground‐nesting birds. The study compared nest success of protected and unprotected Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus nests over 2 years on arable farms in the Netherlands. Because of different crop management, nest success of ground‐breeding birds might differ between organic and conventional arable farms. The effectiveness of volunteer nest protection was therefore investigated on both farm types. Although nest protection significantly reduced nest loss due to farming operations, there were no significant differences in total clutch survival of protected and unprotected nests. However, sample sizes of unprotected nests, and protected nests on organic farms, were relatively small, which may have reduced statistical power. There were indications that protected nests were predated or deserted more often. We recommend exploring different ways to improve the effectiveness of volunteer nest protection through a further reduction of nest loss due to farming operations and predation.  相似文献

Given the high costs of brood parasitism, avian hosts have adopted different defences to counteract parasites by ejecting the foreign egg or by deserting the parasitized nest. These responses depend mainly on the relative size of the host compared with the parasitic egg. Small hosts must deal with an egg considerably larger than their own, so nest desertion becomes the only possible method of egg rejection in these cases. The use of artificial model eggs made of hard material in egg‐recognition experiments has been criticized because hard eggs underestimate the frequency of egg ejection. However, no available studies have investigated the effect of softer material. Here, we test the potential effect of size of dummy parasitic eggs in relation to egg‐rejection behaviour (egg ejection and nest desertion rates) in Western Bonelli's Warbler Phylloscopus bonelli, a small host, using plasticine non‐mimetic eggs of three different sizes. In addition, we tested the potential effect of material, comparing ejection and desertion responses between real and plasticine eggs. As predicted, small eggs were always ejected, whereas nest desertion occurred more frequently with large eggs, thus suggesting that nest desertion occurs because of the constraints imposed by the large eggs. We found that plasticine may misrepresent the responses to experimental parasitism, at least in small host species, because this material facilitates egg ejection, provoking a decrease in nest desertion rate. Thus, particular caution is needed in the interpretation of the results in egg‐rejection experiments performed using dummy eggs made of soft materials.  相似文献

To explore the nest survival rate of Reeves's pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) and the nest-site factors that affect it,we conducted artificial nest experiments with reference to natural nests at Dongzhai National Nature Reserve (DNNR),Henan Province and Pingjingguan,Hubei Province from April to June 2014 simulating the situation in its early and later breeding season.We also determined distance characteristics of the nest sites by ArcGIS 10.0.Nest survival models were constructed in Program MARK for data analysis.Results indicated that in the early breeding season,the apparent survival rate (ASR) in DNNR (52.4%) was significantly greater than that in Pingjingguan (13.5%),and the ASR in the later breeding season in DNNR (26.7%) was not indistinctively correlated with Pingjingguan (3.2%).The daily survival rate (DSR) in the later breeding season was 93.8% in DNNR and 92.0% in Pingjingguan,respectively.The DSRs were both negatively correlated with nest distance to forest edges and settlements.The DSR in Pingjingguan was positively correlated with nest distance to paths and negatively correlated with nest distance to water sources.However,the DSR in DNNR was negatively correlated with nest distance to paths but positively correlated with nest distance to water sources.  相似文献

Utilization of the extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) and fruits of Canavalia lineata and C. cathartica by ants was investigated at 30 sites in Japan. The fruits of C. lineata and C. cathartica were inhabited by five and eight ant species, respectively. Ant nesting periods and their utilization of EFNs differed between C. lineata and C. cathartica. Canavalia lineata flowers once a year, and periods of EFN-utilization and fruit-nesting by ants do not overlap. The fruit-nesting ants on C. lineata seem to invade the plant from the holes made by moth larvae or breaches made by decay. The ants nesting on the fruits of C. lineata may defend the plant against seed herbivores because they feed on moth larvae. Canavalia cathartica flowers several times over a year, and fruits are found throughout the year; therefore, periods of EFN-utilization and fruit-nesting by ants are overlapped. Canavalia cathartica offers year-round nesting sites and food for ants, and therefore may receive a higher defensive effect from ants than C. lineata. Handling editor: Graham Stone.  相似文献

To assess genetic diversity in the blue-listed purple martin (Progne subis) population in British Columbia, we analysed mitochondrial control region sequences of 93 individuals from British Columbia and 121 individuals collected from seven localities of the western and eastern North American subspecies P. s. arboricola and P. s. subis, respectively. Of the 47 haplotypes we detected, 34 were found exclusively in western populations, and 12 were found only in eastern populations. The most common eastern haplotype (25) was also found in three nestlings in British Columbia and one in Washington. Another British Columbia nestling had a haplotype (35) that differed by a C to T transition from haplotype 25. Coalescent analysis indicated that these five nestlings are probably descendents of recent immigrants dispersing from east to the west, because populations were estimated to have diverged about 200,000–400,000 ybp, making ancestral polymorphism a less likely explanation. Maximum likelihood estimates of gene flow among all populations detected asymmetrical gene flow into British Columbia not only of rare migrants from the eastern subspecies in Alberta but also a substantial number of migrants from the adjacent Washington population, and progressively lower numbers from Oregon in an isolation-by distance pattern. The influx of migrants from different populations is consistent with the migrant-pool model of recolonization which has maintained high genetic diversity in the small recovering population in British Columbia. Thus, the risk to this population is not from genetic erosion or inbreeding following a severe population crash, but from demographic stochasticity and extinction in small populations.  相似文献

Although the use of olfaction by birds is now widely recognised, the olfactory abilities of passerine birds remain poorly explored, for historical reasons. Several studies however suggest that passerines can perceive volatile compounds in several biologically relevant contexts. In Corsica, recent findings suggest that cavity-nesting blue tits may use volatile compounds in the context of nest building and maintenance. Although they build their nests mainly from moss, female blue tits also frequently incorporate fragments of several species of aromatic plants in the nest cup. In field experiments, breeding female blue tits altered their nest maintenance behaviour in response to experimental addition of aromatic plants in their nest. In aviary experiments, captive male blue tits could be trained to detect lavender odour from a distance. Here I report results from a field study aimed to test whether adult blue tits altered their chick-feeding behaviour after an experimental change in nest odour composition. I experimentally added fragments of aromatic plant species that differed from those brought in the nests before the start of the experiment in a set of experimental nests and added moss, the basic nest material, in a set of control nests. Both male and female blue tits hesitated significantly longer entering the nest cavity after addition of new aromatic plant fragments, as compared to moss addition. This response was especially observed during the first visit following the experimental change in nest plant composition. Nest composition treatment had no effect on the time spent in the nest. This study demonstrates that free-ranging blue tits detect changes in nest odour from outside the nest cavity.  相似文献

In our previous studies, we demonstrated that dominant hens had priority in using the dust bath, resulted in increased competition for the resource. It seemed that the problem was that the resource was placed on one side of the cage (‘localised’). Therefore, we designed a medium-sized furnished cage with a dust bath and nest box on both sides of the cage (‘separated’, MFS). To evaluate the effects of separation of these resources, we compared the behaviour of high-, medium- and low-ranked hens in MFS cage with that in small (SF) and medium furnished (MFL) cages with a localised resource. In total, 150 White Leghorn layers were used. At the age of 17 weeks, the hens were randomly divided into three groups and moved to small furnished cages (SF, 90 cm wide; five birds per cage) and two types of medium furnished cages (180 cm wide; 10 birds per cage) with a nest box and dust bath on both sides (MFS) and a nest box and dust bath on one side of the cage (MFL). The total dust bath and nest box areas per hen were same for the three cages. The dominance hierarchy was determined by observing the aggressive interactions and by this high-, medium- and low-ranked hens in each cage were identified. The behaviour, use of facilities and physical condition of these hens were measured. Data were analysed by using repeated measure ANOVA. A significant interaction between social order and cage design was found in the proportions of time spent in the dust bath and on performing dust-bathing (both P < 0.001), and these proportions tended to be higher in higher-ranked hens in SF and MFL. Conversely, the MFS low-ranked hens tended to use the dust bath more than the SF and MFL low-ranked hens. Thus, hens from each rank used the dust bath equally in MFS, though the MFS high-ranked hens tended to use the resource less than the SF and MFL high-ranked hens. While the frequency of pre-laying sitting was lower among low-ranked hens (P < 0.05), the proportion of time in the nest box was higher among low- than high-ranked hens (P < 0.01). The low-ranked hens spent more time performing escaping, moving and standing in the nest box. In conclusion, it is suggested that separation of the dust bath to two locations would be an effective arrangement to promote more equal usage of the dust bath by hens from each rank in the furnished cages. It was also confirmed in the present study that nest boxes were not only used for laying eggs but also as a refuge by lower ranked hens.  相似文献

Compared to non-flying nest-dwelling ectoparasites, the biology of most species of flying ectoparasites and its potential impact on avian hosts is poorly known and rarely, if ever, reported. In this study we explore for the first time the factors that may affect biting midge (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) abundances in the nest cavity of a bird, the hole-nesting blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, and report their effects on adults and nestlings during reproduction. The abundance of biting midges was positively associated with nest mass, parental provisioning effort and abundance of blowflies and black flies, while negatively associated with nestling condition. Furthermore, a medication treatment to reduce blood parasitaemias in adult birds revealed that biting midges were more abundant in nests of females whose blood parasitaemias were experimentally reduced. This finding would be in accordance with these insect vectors attacking preferentially uninfected or less infected hosts to increase their own survival. The abundance of black flies in the population was lower than that of biting midges and increased in nests with later hatching dates. No significant effect of black fly abundance on adult or nestling condition was detected. Blood-sucking flying insects may impose specific, particular selection pressures on their hosts and more research is needed to better understand these host–parasite associations.  相似文献
