This study was carried out in the northern Aegean Sea during late summer and spring. The aim was to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of the zooplankton community across a dynamic frontal area and to investigate how the oceanographic heterogeneity structures the composition of the zooplankton assemblages. The low-salinity and cold Black Sea water coming from the Dardanelles Strait is modified by mixing with the underlying warm and saline Aegean water. These hydrological features result in a pronounced thermohaline front in the northern Aegean Sea throughout the year. In both seasons, zooplankton was collected using both 45 and 200 µm mesh plankton nets. A high abundance of zooplankton was observed in the surface layer at the stations closest to the Dardanelles Strait on the stratified side of the front. The zooplankton distribution and community structure in the northern Aegean Sea were strongly influenced by the hydrological features. The frontal structure acts as a boundary for the zooplankton community. The surface layer at the stratified stations had the lowest copepod diversity, from where it increased with depth and horizontally as the stratification weakened outside of the front. The total abundance of zooplankton collected with the 200 µm net was between two and 20 times lower than samples taken with the 45 µm net. The most pronounced differences were observed for the adults and copepodids of the small genera Oithona, Oncaea and Microsetella. Thus, to manage and understand the transfer of primary production up the food chain in the Aegean Sea, the smaller fraction of copepods should be taken into account in future investigations.  相似文献

The locomotion of Caenorhabditis elegans exhibits complex patterns. In particular, the worm combines mildly curved runs and sharp turns to steer its course. Both runs and sharp turns of various types are important components of taxis behavior. The statistics of sharp turns have been intensively studied. However, there have been few studies on runs, except for those on klinotaxis (also called weathervane mechanism), in which the worm gradually curves toward the direction with a high concentration of chemicals; this phenomenon was discovered recently. We analyzed the data of runs by excluding sharp turns. We show that the curving rate obeys long-tail distributions, which implies that large curving rates are relatively frequent. This result holds true for locomotion in environments both with and without a gradient of NaCl concentration; it is independent of klinotaxis. We propose a phenomenological computational model on the basis of a random walk with multiplicative noise. The assumption of multiplicative noise posits that the fluctuation of the force is proportional to the force exerted. The model reproduces the long-tail property present in the experimental data.  相似文献

Caenorhabditis elegans and human HRG-1-related proteins are conserved, membrane-bound permeases that bind and translocate heme in metazoan cells via a currently uncharacterized mechanism. Here, we show that cellular import of heme by HRG-1-related proteins from worms and humans requires strategically located amino acids that are topologically conserved across species. We exploit a heme synthesis-defective Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant to model the heme auxotrophy of C. elegans and demonstrate that, under heme-deplete conditions, the endosomal CeHRG-1 requires both a specific histidine in the predicted second transmembrane domain (TMD2) and the FARKY motif in the C terminus tail for heme transport. By contrast, the plasma membrane CeHRG-4 transports heme by utilizing a histidine in the exoplasmic (E2) loop and the FARKY motif. Optimal activity under heme-limiting conditions, however, requires histidine in the E2 loop of CeHRG-1 and tyrosine in TMD2 of CeHRG-4. An analogous system exists in humans, because mutation of the synonymous histidine in TMD2 of hHRG-1 eliminates heme transport activity, implying an evolutionary conserved heme transport mechanism that predates vertebrate origins. Our results support a model in which heme is translocated across membranes facilitated by conserved amino acids positioned on the exoplasmic, cytoplasmic, and transmembrane regions of HRG-1-related proteins. These findings may provide a framework for understanding the structural basis of heme transport in eukaryotes and human parasites, which rely on host heme for survival.  相似文献

Summary During Givetian times, the Jebel Rheris area was situated in a transitional zone at the northern margin of Gondwana, between the emerged Ougnate High in the north and the Mader Basin in the south. A facies pattern developed from stacked or amalgamated coral-stromatoporoid biostromes in the northern near-shore area to an alternating biostrome–crinoidal grainstone succession, which passed over a low angle slope setting towards the south to a pure crinoidal grainstone facies with abundant slumping structures. Finally in the south, a basinal turbiditic facies evolved. In the shallow sea, biostromes probably developed due to the lack of a ‘binder guild’ in the fossil community, which hampered the establishment of mound-like structures, stable enough to resist high-energy storm events. Repeated termination of the coral-stromatoporoid growth is attributed to transgressions. During suitable conditions, colonisation of the sea floor proceeded in three phases: a) cluster settlement; pioneer communities, mostly consisting of tabulate corals and domical to bulbous stromatoporoids, started growing in laterally delimited clusters; b) lateral dispersion; from these centres, settlement prograded laterally, until large areas of the sea-floor were covered; c) vertical accretion; the organisms more and more grew on each other, causing a homogeneous vertical expansion. A significant difference of this up to 200 m thick biostrome—crinoidal grainstone succession compared to continuously growing reefs is the fact that communities repeatedly had to start with the colonisation stage, thus could not reach a mature or climax stage.  相似文献

We studied the host-finding and dispersion behaviour of Heterorhabditis megidis (strain NLHE 87.3) in the presence of Galleria mellonella or Otiorhynchus sulcatus larvae and strawberry roots. In large Petri dishes (19 cm diameter) filled with moist sand (8% w/w), and incubated at 15°C over 24 h, infective juveniles (IJs) responded positively to the presence of G. mellonella , to roots of a single strawberry plant and to O. sulcatus larvae in direct contact with roots of a single strawberry plant. A neutral or negative response was observed when IJs were presented with only O. sulcatus larvae or a combination of several strawberry plants with O. sulcatus larvae, either in contact or not in contact with the roots. IJs responded strongly to the combination of plant roots and feeding larvae indicating that the tritrophic interaction formed by IJs - O. sulcatus larvae - strawberry plants may be an infochemical-mediated interaction.  相似文献

Macromycetes are important for ecosystem functioning due to their role in the nutrient cycling, and their function as pathogens and mutualists. Diversity metrics based on functional traits are robust predictors of ecosystem functionality since they incorporate an evolutionary and ecologic background. We examined diversity patterns of macrofungi using functional trait-based metrics of diversity along an altitudinal gradient in a seasonally dry tropical forest in southern Mexico. Our findings show that: (1) functional diversity varies with elevation, relating more to climatic variables than to vegetation structure; (2) functional diversity indexes exhibited contrasting patterns, so measures reflecting heterogeneity on trait abundance and niche complementarity tend to increase with elevation, whereas the measure of trait evenness decreases; and (3) functional diversity patterns depend on the type of functional trait considered and how they respond to environmental conditions. Our results indicate that functional diversity analyses help understanding of how macrofungal communities respond to environmental variation.  相似文献

Infective larvae of the anisakine nematode Phocanema decipiens from the muscle of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were fed to harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and gray seals (Halichoerus grypus). During maturation in the stomach of seal hosts, P. decipiens molted twice; these molts are the third and fourth of its life cycle. The third molt occurred between the second and fifth days of infection. The third stage, i.e., infective larva entering the third molt, had a cuticular tooth ventral to the mouth; the fourth stage larva emerging from the third molt had three bilobed lips with dentigerous ridges. The fourth molt occurred between the 5th and 15th days in seals. A female nematode emerging from the fourth molt possesses a vulva and a vagina; a male possesses caudal alae, pre- and postanal papillae. Significant morphometric changes in nematodes were associated with both molts. Females and males of P. decipiens reached maturity after 15 to 25 days in seals. Ova were detected in the feces of the seal hosts as early as the 16th day.  相似文献

Larval triphenism and the evolution of alternative life-cycles in a microbotrophic nematode: Rhabditis (P.) orbitalis – a larval parasite in the eye orbits of murid rodents Along with the normal third stage larva and the resistant dauerlarva, Rh. orbitalis posesses an infective larva, which is an obligate parasite in the eye orbits of mice and voles. Dauerlarvae as well as infective larvae develop from a common pre-stage («girdle-larva»), determined by the quality of food stored in the intestinal cells. – Dauerlarvae may tolerate desiccation (at room-temperature and -humidity) up to 4 weeks. If stored in tap water (at 6°C), they will survive for some month being able to restore development. – Infective larvae never survive desiccation but can also be stored in tap water at low temperatures. Food uptake from the lachrymal fluid of a host is needed prior to restoring development. The phenomenon involved is referred to as a necessary adaptation to the ecological conditions in the rodents' nests. It is also pointed out to the different strategies of other parasitic nematode species.  相似文献

Summary To explain the decline of Hippopha? scrub in the vegetation succession in the dunes of The Netherlands, the growth and nodulation of Hippopha? plants grown in pots, using soil from an early stage (site AH) and a post-optimum stage (site HP), were investigated. In HP-soil nodulation, yield, and the nitrogen and phosphorus content of test plants were always lower and the number of necrotic nodules and the dry matter content were always higher than in AH-soil, even after inoculation with crushed nodules and the addition of a nutrient solution. Plants in HP-soil also had darker roots, less root hairs, a higher number of short lateral roots and a higher percentage of dead roots than those in AH-soil. These characteristics of adverse growth conditions disappeared upon ignition or gamma-irradiation of HP-soil. Possible explanations of these results are discussed. The degeneration of Hippopha? scrub cannot be ascribed to the age of the plants, the absence of sufficient infective endophyte particles or to abiotic factors such as unfavourable physical (particle size) or chemical soil conditions but is caused by biotic factors. No indications were obtained that plant-pathogenic fungi and bacteria are involved. HP-soil in contrast to AH-soil, however, contained large numbers of the nematodeLongidorus sp., a species known to cause root deformations. The conclusion was that this nematode is one of the biotic factors involved in the degeneration of the Hippopha? scrub. This degeneration is due to a restriction of the root system resulting in a low phosphate uptake, a low nodulation capacity and, as a consequence, a low nitrogen content. The results demonstrate that biotic soil factors are important in influencing succession in higher plant communities.  相似文献

Changes in peripheral blood leucocytes were followed in male August rats given one or two infections with the parasitic nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. During the initial infection, there was a biphasic increase in total numbers of leucocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, large mononuclear cells, and eosinophils. All except eosinophils fell rapidly to normal levels as the parasites were expelled, but eosinophils were elevated much longer. All these cell types increased in number to a single peak 5 days after reinfection. Basophils were detected at very low levels in uninfected rats (0.06% or 11600 leucocytes) and increased in number to a peak 13 days after initial infection, at which time they represented about 4.5% of total leucocytes, an 80-fold increase compared with the number in normal rats. In reinfected rats, the basophilia occurred more rapidly than in a primary infection, suggesting that the appearance of these cells in the circulation is probably an immunologically mediated event.  相似文献
