Studies of the evolution of elaborate ornaments have concentrated on their role in increasing attractiveness to mates. The classic examples of such sexually selected structures are the elongated tails of some bird species. Elongated tails can be divided into three categories: graduated tails, pin tails and streamers. There seems to be little debate about whether graduated and pin tails are ornaments; i.e. costly signals used in mate choice. However, in the case of streamers there is considerable discussion about their function. It has been suggested that tail streamers could be (i) entirely naturally selected, (ii) entirely sexually selected, (iii) partly naturally and partly sexually selected. The prime example of a species with tail streamers is the swallow (Hirundo rustica) in which both sexes have tail streamers. In this paper we discuss the aerodynamic consequences of different types of manipulation of the streamer and/or outer tail feather. We make qualitative predictions about the aerodynamic performance of swallows with manipulated tail streamers; these predictions differ depending on whether streamers have a naturally or sexually selected function. We demonstrate that these hypotheses can only be separated if tail streamers are shortened and changes in aerodynamic performance measured during turning flight.  相似文献

Optimization of molecular design in cellular metabolism is a necessary condition for guaranteeing a good structure–function relationship. We have studied this feature in the design of glycogen by means of the mathematical model previously presented that describes glycogen structure and its optimization function [Meléndez-Hevia et al. (1993), Biochem J 295: 477–483]. Our results demonstrate that the structure of cellular glycogen is in good agreement with these principles. Because the stored glucose in glycogen must be ready to be used at any phase of its synthesis or degradation, the full optimization of glycogen structure must also imply the optimization of every intermediate stage in its formation. This case can be viewed as a molecular instance of the eye problem, a classical paradigm of natural selection which states that every step in the evolutionary formation of a functional structure must be functional. The glycogen molecule has a highly optimized structure for its metabolic function, but the optimization of the full molecule has meaning and can be understood only by taking into account the optimization of each intermediate stage in its formation. Theories of the origin of life have proposed hypotheses to link inanimate to animate matter. The theory proposed here derived the crucial stages in the origin of animate matter directly from the basic properties of inanimate matter. It asked what were the general characteristics of the link, rather than what might have been its chemical details. Life and its origin are shown to be one continuous physicochemical process of replication, random variation, and natural selection. Since life exists here and now, animate properties must have been initiated in the past somewhere. According to the theory, life originated from an as yet unknown elementary autocatalyst which occurred spontaneously, then replicated autocatalytically. As it multiplied to macroscopic abundance, its replicas gradually exhausted their reactants. Random chemical drift initiated diversity among autocatalysts. Diversity led to competition. Competition and depletion of reactants slowed down the rates of net replication of the autocatalysts. Some reached negative rates and became extinct, while those which stayed positive ``survived.' Thus chemical natural selection appeared, the first step in the transition from inanimate to animate matter. It initiated the first animate property, fitness, i.e., the capacity to adapt to the environment and to survive. As the environment was depleted of reactants, it was enriched with sequels—namely, with decomposition products and all other products which accompany autocatalysis. The changing environment exerted a selective pressure on autocatalysts to replace dwindling reactants by accumulating sequels. Sequels that were incorporated into the autocatalytic process became internal components of complex autocatalytic systems. Primitive forms of metabolism and organization were thus initiated. They evolved further by the same mechanism to ever higher levels of complexity, such as homochirality (handedness) and membranal enclosure. Subsequent evolution by the same mechanism generated cellular metabolism, cell division, information carriers, and a genetic code. Theories of self-organization without natural selection are refuted. 对我国大陆银额果蝇的分布及其细胞遗传学进行了广泛的调查,发现了一种值得注意的新核型。该核型结构兼有早已认可的长、短两大类基本核型的特征,即核型中的两条同源4号染色体为1长1短型。含新核型的群体分布于我国大陆东南沿海一带的上海、福州、厦门和深圳。而且,这些自然群体内还出现“1长1短型”、“长型”和“短型”重叠并存的多态现象。跟踪研究表明,新核型具有不稳定的遗传性,能世代传递,它的频率随世代增长而降低,并不是突然消失。但是,在上海、福州群体内出现的“长型”至第十五代之后却全部消失。这种新核型大概是银额果蝇自然演化过程中的中间过渡核型,是该果蝇种群分化中的细胞遗传学变异的过渡表征  相似文献

Analysis of fossil diatom assemblages recovered from a 12.2 m core reveals a series of distinct floristic associations. The associations present are correlated with sediment type and reflect successive stages in the development of the lake. A basal red clay sediment contains a planktonic association characteristic of large, proglacial lakes. At 10.0 m core depth, sediment type changes to fine sand containing a higher abundance of benthic species indicating reduction of water depth at the deposition site. Marl sediments begin at 9.7 m and contain an association characteristic of a small, shallow, oligotrophic lake. At 8.8 m the marl sequence is interrupted by highly organic sediment containing a eutrophic plankton association. From 8.5 to 7.6 m the sediment type grades from marl to organic, apparently reduced sediments and diatom associations present contain successively higher percentages of planktonic species associated with eutrophic habitats. By the 7.6 m level a eutrophic plankton association, similar to the modern flora, is established and remains remarkably constant to the surface of the section.  相似文献

Synopsis The interaction of fluctuating water level and the Long Point topography is discussed with regard to the formation of lake-shore lagoons and their subsequent invasion by fishes. The species composition of fish communities in these lagoons was determined by 12 collections from lagoons (23 m2 to 25 ha) which yielded 33 fish species. The relationship of the number of fish species to lagoon area was lognormal; that is, with increasing lagoon area the number of species rose rapidly at first but soon decreased sharply, probably limited by the number of species capable of surviving in the habitat. The marked effect of area on species number in small lagoons is considered in the context of a hypothetical seasonal pattern of occasional invasion and continuous extinction.A sequence of reproductive guilds was found. In beach lagoons psammophils and lithophils were dominant. In a large vegetated lagoon in the interior phytophils and speleophils were dominant. This sequence was paralleled by an increase in the proportion of guarding and nesting species in the communities. The sequence was disrupted in the small interior lagoons where adaptations for survival were more important than reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Spatial studies of colonization and succession of soil algae and chemical analyses of the various soils on the cinde cone of Kilauea Iki in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii are outlined. There is a positive correlation between the diversity and quantity of soil algae with nutrient levels and organic matter accumulation in each locale. Three distinct edaphic-biotic zones existing in this area are differentially revealed by the soil chemical composition, quantity and diversity of soil algae, and as evident variations in higher plant growth and colonization. Varying colonization and successional phases of higher plant growth around standing and fallen tree snags killed by volcanic activity also reflect variations in the soil algal flora. These variations appear largely as a function of differential water interception, absorption, and retention as well as differential accumulation of organic matter, and the initiation of various biogeochemical cycles.  相似文献

A characteristic electric organ discharge display in social encounters between mormyrid fish is a temporary discharge cessation. Using this response, we have investigated the useful range of electrocommunication under different water conductivity conditions in the mormyrid Brienomyrus niger. An individual fish was confined to a porous ceramic shelter tube and moved from a starting distance of 380 cm toward a similarly confined conspecific until discharge, cessation occurred. The moved fish was subsequently returned to its original, position. Water conductivity affects the peak-to-peak source voltage of the electric organ and the sensitivity of the fish's electroreceptors. Within a range of 10 to 36 000 μS/cm, the peak-to-peak amplitude of the electric organ discharge declined as a power function. At 120 μS/cm, the amplitude was 50%, and at 300μS/cm, 30% of the 10 μS/cm value. The interfish distance at which discharge cessation occurred and the associated electric field gradients were dependent on water conductivity and upon the spatial orientation of the two fish (end-to-end or parallel orientations of their shelter tubes). The respective ranges were from 135 cm and 0.02 mV/cm at 52 μS/cm (parallel orientation) to 22 cm and 0.36 mV/cm at 678 μS/cm (end-to-end orientation). When the data for both tube orientations were combined, the relationship between water conductivity (x) and the distance at which discharge cessation occurred (y) could be expressed by a power function, y=K·xa (with K=102.97 and a=?0.56). When an electrically ‘silent’ fish was moved away from its conspecific, a discharge resumption in the form of a high-frequency rebound occasionally effected changes in the other fish's discharge activity at distances up to 157 cm (with an associated electric, field gradient of 0.01 mV/cm under the lowest conductivity condition).  相似文献

Population dynamics of Heliothis virescens (F.) and Heliothis zea (Boddie ) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs and larvae were studied for two years in a small plot of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (L.). Due to morphological and ecological similarities, the pooled Heliothis population was considered for most of the analyses. Two generations of Heliothis eggs and larvae were completed during each year. Stage recruitment was estimated for the eggs and larval instars 2–6, and recruitment variances were estimated by a Monte Carlo method. A modified form of the Weibull distribution was developed and used as a model to characterize survivorship curves for each of the four Heliothis generations. A Type I survivorship curve (mortality rate increasing with age) was inferred for both Generation 1 (early season) data sets, whereas a Type II survivorship curve (mortality rate constant and thus independent of age) was inferred for both Generation 2 (late season) data sets. The shapes of the survivorship curves for the individual H. virescens and H. zea populations were inferred to be the same as those for the pooled populations. Analysis of the contributions of various factors to Heliothis stage-specific mortality indicated that natural enemies (predators and parasites) and the availability of food for larvae were responsible for between-generation differences in survivorship patterns.  相似文献

The terrestrial slugs Arion ater, Limax maximus and Ariolimax columbianus have similar morphological designs but differ remarkably in their life history tactics and behavioural time budgets. The adaptive value of particular risk-taking styles was investigated using a comprehensive computer simulation model. The model allowed each species' success (growth rates, food acquisition) and costs (distance travelled, hydration deficits, injury from aggressive encounters) to be evaluated in various types of weather (benign, harsh and surprise). This was interpreted in terms of the species' life history design. In addition, each species was simulated with the behavioural strategy of the other two species substituted for its natural programming. The simulation experiments demonstrated how variations in a few simple rules could lead to divergent cost-benefit consequences. The model also illustrated that coarsely-tuned sensitivity to the environment may be better than finely-tuned responses, depending on the animal's ability to respond quickly and the degree of risk. The simulations suggested that competition has shaped the time-budgeting tactics of A. ater and L. maximus. Each species actually performed better in harsh weather, using the behavioural program of the other. L. maximus is an aggressive species with a narrow, nocturnal activity period. The concentrated activity of L. maximus may allow it to displace competitors more effectively, whereas the broader time span of A. ater's activity may be necessary to avoid L. maximus.  相似文献
