Effect of γ-hexachloran and sevin on the survival of the Black Sea mussel,Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam

Some observations on the effect of -hexachloran and sevin on the survival of two size groups of the Black Sea mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. were made. The results of the present study are compared with those made earlier on the same species and on fishes.     

Field experiments on the optical orientation of pelagic rotifers

Avoidance of shore by pelagic rotifers is considered to be the result of an optical orientation. Field experiments show that the spatial light distribution in the shore region determines the preferred direction of migration. The behaviour of Eudiaptomus gracilis was tested in comparison to that of rotifers.This publication is dedicated to Pater Dr. Josef Donner on the occasion of his 70th birthday     

Evidence for a role of specific isoacceptor species of tRNA in amino acid transport.

Soybean leghemoglobins ā and b?were compared by microscale peptide mapping after heme removal with acid-acetone. Maps generated by trypsin or the combined action of trypsin and thermolysin indicated a large amount of homology between the proteins with the only variations detected being the N-terminal peptides. The N-terminal tryptic peptide of leghemoglobin b? was found to be both blocked and to lack the first amino acid of the corresponding leghemoglobin ā peptide. Nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy studies showed that the N-terminal of leghemoglobin b? was N-acetyl-alanine. It is possible that leghemoglobin b? arises from leghemoglobin ā by a two-stage modification involving cleavage of the N-terminal valyl residue and subsequent acetylation of the exposed alanyl residue.     

Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase-C of platelets: association with 1,2-diacyglycerol-kinase and inhibition by cyclic-AMP.

Horse platelets prelabeled with [¹⁴C]arachidonate (AA) rapidly degrade [¹⁴C]phosphatidylinositol (PI) to [¹⁴C]1,2-diacylglycerol (DG) upon treatment with deoxycholate (DOC). This phospholipase-C (PLC) activity is specific for PI since other phospholipids or neutral lipids are not affected. Although exogenous Ca²⁺ is not required for activity, EGTA or EDTA abolishes PI degradation. Addition of Mg²⁺ (1 mM) and ATP (1 mM) results in phosphorylation of the DG and production of phosphatidic acid (PA). Higher concentrations of DOC inhibit DG-kinase. These observations, together with the fact that different platelet agonists induce a rapid degradation of PI and production of PA, indicate that PLC and DG-kinase activities are intimately linked. Incubation of platelets with dibutyryl cyclic-AMP, cyclic AMP-phosphodiesterase inhibitors and pyridoxal-5′-phosphate, which prevent platelet aggregation, inhibits the DOC-dependent conversion of PI to DG. The activity of PLC may play a central role in mediating platelet function and aggregation.     

Cryopreservation of spermatozoa of the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica Gmelin

Spermatozoa of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica were frozen to ?196 °C in concentrated Hanks' salt solution (2.6×) containing 8% dimethyl sulfoxide. About 0.2 ml of spermatozoa that were stored in liquid nitrogen for 68 days fertilized 91% of 65,600 eggs compared to fresh spermatozoa, which fertilized 92% of approximately the same number of eggs from the same females. Larvae resulting from fertilization of fresh eggs with 39-day-old cryopreserved spermatozoa appeared normal after 11 days.     

Variations in the response of five strains of mice to Leishmania mexicana.

Five strains of mice were studied in their ability to support Leishmania mexicana infection. Four strains, AKR, C57BL/6, DBA/2 and NMRI, were relatively resistant to cutaneous leishmaniasis. These strains developed delayed type hypersensitivity responses to leishmanial antigens and produced agglutinating antibodies. On the other hand Balb/c mice, highly susceptible to infection, failed to develop delayed type hypersensitivity responses and showed an impaired production of antibodies. Hybrids produced by mating C57BL/6 males and Balb/c females were no more susceptible than C57BL/6 mice, suggesting that resistance is inherited as a dominant character.
