Summary Ammonium nitrate fertilizer, labelled with15N, was applied in spring to winter wheat growing in undisturbed monoliths of clay and sandy loam soil in lysimeters; the rates of application were respectively 95 and 102 kg N ha−1 in the spring of 1976 and 1975. Crops of winter wheat, oilseed rape, peas and barley grown in the following 5 or 6 years were treated with unlabelled nitrogen fertilizer at rates recommended for maximum yields. During each year of the experiments the lysimeters were divided into treatments which were either freelydrained or subjected to periods of waterlogging. Another labelled nitrogen application was made in 1980 to a separate group of lysimeters with a clay soil and a winter wheat crop to study further the uptake of nitrogen fertilizer in relation to waterlogging. In the first growing season, shoots of the winter wheat at harvest contained 46 and 58% of the fertilizer nitrogen applied to the clay and sandy loam soils respectively. In the following year the crops contained a further 1–2% of the labelled fertilizer, and after 5 and 6 years the total recoveries of labelled fertilizer in the crops were 49 and 62% on the clay and sandy loam soils respectively. In the first winter after the labelled fertilizer was applied, less than 1% of the fertilizer was lost in the drainage water, and only about 2% of the total nitrogen (mainly nitrate) in the drainage water from both soils was derived from the fertilizer. Maximum annual loss occurred the following year but the proportion of tracer nitrogen in drainage was nevertheless smaller. Leaching losses over the 5 and 6 years from the clay and sandy loam soil were respectively 1.3 and 3.9% of the original application. On both soils the percentage of labelled nitrogen to the total crop nitrogen content was greater after a period of winter waterlogging than for freely-drained treatments. This was most marked on the clay soil; evidence points to winter waterlogging promoting denitrification and the consequent loss of soil nitrogen making the crop more dependent on spring fertilizer applications.  相似文献

Summary Remobilization of15N from vegetative tissue of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) into pods was measured during the reproductive phase of growth. Plant tissue was labelled with15N during vegetative development. Experiments were conducted in the field at two sites. At one site the soil provided cowpeas with most of their N but at the other site N fixation provided most of the N. Remobilized N from vegetative tissue to pods occurred soon after they began to develop. The quantity of the labelled N ultimately remobilized to the pods amounted to 50% for one cultivar (Tx33) at the high soil N site and 70% at the low N site. For the other cultivar (Tx13) the values were 25% and 30%, respectively. The two cultivars performed very differently with respect to partitioning of N into pods and the rate of N fixation. Even though more N was accumulated in the shoots of the high N fixing cultivar (Tx13) less total N was contained in the pods.  相似文献

Summary Non-symbiotic heterotrophic N2 fixation in coniferous bark litter was investigated with the acetylene reduction assay under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The litter studied was composed essentially of bark, of pH 5 and a C/N ratio of 101; the ratio of available C to available N, which governs N2 fixation, was considerably higher. The rate of N2 fixation was estimated as 2.5–4.4 g N. g–1 dry wt. day–1. Nitrogenase activity was still evident after seven months of incubation under aerobic conditions. The N2-ase activity was O2 dependent: under anaerobic conditions no N2-ase activity was found unless a fermentable C source was added. The importance of N2 fixation in N-poor litter for the maintenance of soil fertility is emphasized.  相似文献

Like adult heads and whole flies, larval brains of wild type Drosophila melanogaster contain two major soluble cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases, forms I and II. Larval brains of the learning-defective mutant strain, dunceM11, contain only the form I enzyme. In both wild type and dunce strains the form I enzyme is activated by Ca2+/calmodulin. Published values for the concentration of Cu in cerebrospinal and intraocular fluids cover a very wide range (0.016 to 1.0 microgram/ml) and include values which are several times higher than those which would be consistent with normal physiology. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace was used to measure the Cu concentration in these fluids and in blood plasma of toads, rabbits, and cats. Under standard conditions, these fluids yielded high background absorbance and only fractional recovery of added Cu. Parameters were therefore established which eliminated both the high background and the matrix interference and allowed the determination of Cu in 10-microliters aliquots of diluted blood plasma and undiluted cerebrospinal and ocular fluid samples. Under these conditions the Cu measured in the ocular (0.011 to 0.032 microgram/ml) and cerebrospinal fluids (0.033 to 0.050 microgram/ml) of these three species was lower than most previously reported values and only a small fraction (1-3%) of the concentration of Cu in the plasma of the same animals (0.85 to 1.22 micrograms/ml).  相似文献

Larvae of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor, are able to absorb water vapour from subsaturated air, but adults cannot. This functional difference is paralleled by structural differences in the cryptonephridial rectal complex, the site of vapour absorption in the larva. Very distinctive differences occur in the rectal pad epithelium and these are reported in detail for the first time. The cells of the larval rectal pad are very closely apposed, forming a structural, and presumably functional, unit, whereas the cells of the adult rectal pad are more clearly separate. Intracellular organization also shows clear differences. These differences indicate that the rectal epithelium may play a more important role in vapour absorption than recently ascribed to it. Other, less striking, differences in the cryptonephric Malpighian tubules and perinephric membrane as previously recorded have largely been confirmed. Morphometric analysis suggests that diffusion alone could account for the observed absorption of water vapour across the larval system from rectal lumen to the lumen of the cryptonephric tubules, but this does not rule out the possibility that other transporting mechanisms are also involved. Radial diffusion and antero-posterior gradients may be facilitated by the predominently radial and circumferential arrangement of the rectal pad cells and the surrounding cryptonephric tubules. Reinvestigation of the isolating perinephric membrane and its insertion onto the rectal cuticle supports the conclusions that insertion occurs only posteriorly. The model incorporating anterior as well as posterior insertion does not apply. The membrane posteriorly encloses a single perirectal space between rectum and tubules and in this region no perinephric or peritubular space is found between inner and outer regions of the membrane. This is the region where maximal gradients occur across the system.  相似文献

Imagery instructions specifying mucosal immunity should alter mucosal immunoglobulin A (m-IgA) levels in high absorbers, whose intent concentration evokes intense physiological responses. After screening for health status, 121 high or low absorbers were randomly assigned to either Relaxation Alone (R), Relaxation with Mucosal Immune Imagery (RI), or Vigilance Task control (VT). Before and after one 60-min intervention, subjects reported theory-relevant psychological variables and provided 5ml whole saliva, which was immediately frozen and assayed lateren masse with enzyme-linked immunoabsorbence (ELISA). MANOVA analysis of psychological variables replicated past research. ANOVA on residualized m-IgA found Time × Absorption interaction and Condition main effects. High more than low absorbers responded to relaxation with mucosal immune imagery by producing higher m-IgA. High absorbers appear able to locate where their immune systems will respond. Individual differences like absorption level need to be emphasized in diagnosis and treatment responsiveness.National Institutes of HealthM. We present ab-initio periodic Hartree–Fock calculations (crystal program) of small molecules on TiO2 and MgO. The adsorption of the molecules may be molecular or dissociative. This depends on their acid and basic properties in the gas phase. For the molecular adsorption, the molecules are adsorbed as bases on Ti(+IV) sites, the adsorption energies correlate with the proton affinities. The dissociations on the surface correlate with the gas phase cleavages: thus, the dissociation of MeOH leads to a preferential basic cleavage (the fragment HO– is adsorbed on a Ti+4 ion and the fragment Me+ is adsorbed on a O2– ion of the oxide). The opposite result is obtained with MeSH. Another important factor is the adsorbate–adsorbate interaction: favorable cases are a sequence of H-bonds for the hydroxyl groups resulting from the water dissociation and the mode of adsorption for the ammonium ions. Lateral interactions also force the adsorbed CO2 molecules to bend over the surface so that their mutual orientation resembles the geometry of the CO2 dimer. With respect to water adsorption, MgO appears to be a basic oxide. As experimentally observed, NH3 adsorbs preferentially on TiO2 and CO2 on MgO. However, this difference of reactivity should not be expressed in terms of acid vs. basic behaviour but in terms of hard and soft acidity. The MgO surface is a 'soft' acidic surface that reacts preferentially with the soft base, CO2.  相似文献
