Current archaeological research suggests that first human occupation of the Torres Strait Islands occurred sometime between 2500 and 3000 cal b.p., and evidence indicates that the development of agricultural mound-and-ditch systems occurred there after 1200 cal b.p. Although archaeological remains testify to the existence of a marine based subsistence economy prior to 1200 cal b.p., the potential presence of earlier prehistoric horticultural signatures has yet to be adequately examined. This study investigates such evidence through a preliminary application of fossil phytolith and starch grain analysis using excavated sediments from two archaeological sites on Dauar Island, eastern Torres Strait. The results show the early presence of yam (Dioscorea sp.), and Musa species not endemic to the island. The occurrence of these edible plant types in association with carbonised phytoliths and anthropogenic shell and bone deposits may be indicative of a combined insular horticultural and marine subsistence system on Dauar Island. We suggest that with a larger and appropriate phytolith reference set for the research area, there is a potential to more clearly define human induced changes to vegetation and patterns of subsistence in the Torres Strait Islands.  相似文献

The relative importance of root system structure, plant carbon status and soil environment in the determination of lateral root diameter remains unclear, and was investigated in this study. Banana (Musa acuminata) plants were grown at various moderate levels of soil compaction in two distinct experiments, in a field experiment (FE) and in a glasshouse experiment (GE). Radiant flux density was 5 times lower in GE. The distribution of root diameter was measured for several root branching orders. Root diameters ranged between 0.09 and 0.52 mm for secondary roots and between 0.06 and 0.27 mm for tertiary roots. A relationship was found between the diameter of the parent bearing root and the median diameter of its laterals, which appears to be valid for a wide range of species. Mean lateral root diameter increased with distance to the base of the root and decreased with branching density [number of lateral roots per unit length of bearing root (cm(-1))]. Typical symptoms of low light availability were observed in GE. In this case, lateral root diameter variability was reduced. Although primary root growth was affected by soil compaction, no effects on lateral root diameter were observed.  相似文献

One hundred and sixty-three endophytic fungal cultures were isolated from 200 leaf samples of Musa acuminata trees, which were soaked in 36% formaldehyde solution for surface sterilization. They belonged to the genera of Gloeosporium musae (45%), Myxosporium spp. (11%), Deightoniella torulosa (8.5%), Alternaria tenuis (7.9%), Sphaceloma spp. (7.4%), Aureobasidium spp. (4.3%), Melida spp. (1.8%), Uncinula spp. (1.8%), Penicillium spp. (1.8%), Aspergillus spp. (1.2%), Sarcinella spp. (1.2%), Cladosporium sp. (0.6%), Cephalosporium sp. (0.6%) and sterile mycelium (6.7%). Sixty-eight endophytic fungal cultures were isolated from 100 root samples. They respectively belonged to the genera of Aspergillus spp. (31%), Paecilomyces spp. (16%), Penicillium spp. (15%), Fusarium spp. (10%), Gloeosporium musae (6%), yeast (3%), Deightoniella torulosa (3%), Spicaria sp. (1.4%), Cephalosporrium sp. (1.4%), Meliola sp. (1.4%) and sterile mycelium (10%). Water agar (containing 50 g chloramphenicol ml–1 and 50 g streptomycin ml–1) seemed to be a better medium for isolation of endophytic fungi than potato-dextrose agar (PDA, containing 50 g chloramphenicol ml–1 and 50 g streptomycin ml–1).  相似文献

The proteolytic enzymes in the gut of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), have been characterized. Both larvae and adults rely on a complex proteolytic system based on at least cathepsin D‐, cathepsin B‐, trypsin‐, chymotrypsin‐, leucine aminopeptidase‐, carboxypeptidase A‐, and carboxypeptidase B‐like activities. All endoproteolytic activities were higher in the anterior section of the gut, whereas the exopeptidases were evenly distributed in the anterior and middle sections, and almost no activity was detected in the posterior section. Gelatin‐containing gels confirmed the spatial organization of the proteolytic digestive process. According to this proteolytic profile, the STI (soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor) was tested in vivo to establish its potential as a resistance factor against C. sordidus. Newly hatched larvae fed on diets containing 0.2% (w/w) STI experience lower survival rates and display significant reductions in larval growth. Biochemical analysis carried out on guts of larvae reared on STI‐treated diet showed a reduction of trypsin‐like activity compared to that from larvae fed on control diet. This decrease was compensated with an induction of cathepsin B, whereas cathepsin D, chymotrypsin, and leucine aminopeptidase were not affected. These results are discussed as a basis for selecting appropriate inhibitors to obtain transgenic banana and plantain plants with enhanced resistance to this pest.  相似文献

Xylem vessels often become occluded when plants are subjected to pathogen or abiotic stresses. The composition of these vessel-obstructing gels has never been directly analyzed. Roots of wilt-resistant (Valery) and susceptible (Gros Michel) cultivars of banana ( Musa acuminata L.) trees were inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum Schlect f. sp. cubense Snyd. and Hans, and vascular gels were collected 5 days later. Gas chromatographic and colorimetric analyses indicate that the gels are rich in neutral sugars (arabinose, glucose and xylose) and uronic acids that are also found in the cell walls of the host. The idea that these vessel occlusions are composed, at least in part, of carbohydrates digested from the cell walls of the host is discussed.  相似文献

The nuclear genome of wild-type banana accessions was investigated for repetitive elements. We report here the occurrence, in the banana genome, of a sequence family of species-specific repetitive elements: Brep 1. This sequence family is distributed throughout the Musaceae with various copy numbers. The two species Musa acuminata and M. schizocarpa carry the highest copy numbers in contrast to M. balbisiana and tested representatives of different other sections. PCR primers were defined in the core consensus sequence for specific amplifications, which allow representatives of this sequence family to be easily detected in wild and cultivated banana clones. Sequence data were analysed and hypotheses on the evolution of banana cultivars from the wild-type banana clones are discussed. Received: 17 January 1997 / Accepted : 7 March 1997  相似文献

Volatiles from banana (‘githumo’'cultivar) pseudostem were trapped using porapak S. The trapped volatiles were desorbed from porapak columns by elution with dichloromethane and analysed using GC and GC-MS. The volatile compounds identified included -pinene, β-pinene, β-myrcene, limonene, -cubebene, -copaene, -cedrene, β-caryophyllene and -humulene.  相似文献

Banana plants (Musa sp., Musaceae) were grown for 2 years in the field in 12×20m plots under irradiance levels incident upon the canopy of 100, 81, 62 and 32% of sunlight. Time-integrated parameters such as leaf δ13C, yield and leaf mass to area ratio were linearly correlated with irradiance level (R2>0.9). In contrast, midday CO2 assimilation and transpiration efficiency (A/g) decreased significantly and substomatal CO2 concentrations (cst) increased significantly only at the lowest irradiance levels (below 81% irradiance). Diurnal gas exchange measurements indicated that the linear response of the long-term parameters may be associated with the significant variations in photosynthetic activity among the irradiance treatments observed only in the early morning hours. The linear fit between yield and irradiance level (per cent of control) had a slope of 0.82 (with apparently constant yield to biomass ratio). These results directly demonstrate the significance of variations in incident light, such as may be associated with increasing cloudiness, on productivity of tropical plants such as the banana. The importance of using time-integrated indicators in general, and the reliability of using 13C discrimination in particular, in evaluating the responses of plants to changes in incident irradiance is demonstrated.  相似文献
