Biological variation is investigated among contemporary Croatians, Bosnians, American whites, and other multitemporal Balkan populations (World War II Croatians, Macedonians, and Greeks) via multivariate statistics and distance measures of the craniofacial complex. This study demonstrates that there is considerable variation among groups of European ancestry. Bosnians and Croatians who are thought to be relatively homogenous and historically to originate from the same Slav ancestry show local variations. While environmental plasticity has been used to explain cranial changes among human groups, it does not adequately explain the variation observed between Bosnians and Croatians. It is an oversimplification to exclusively attribute the vast range of variability observed among local as well as geographic populations to environmental adaptations.  相似文献

In a recent article Levine and Kobilinsky (1997) point out that current methods in forensic DNA 'identification' are inadequate because the commercial kits commonly used in forensic practice do not detect the true genotype, but rather a genotype based on convenient categorization. For this reason, Levine and Kobilinsky argue that statistics attached to such categorizations are invalid. The authors believe that the arguments of Levine and Kobilinsky are logically flawed. Over the last decades, the populations of Austropotamobius pallipes have decreased markedly all over Europe. If we evaluate the ecological factors that determine its presence, we will have information that could guide conservation decisions. This study aims to investigate the chemical-physical demands of A. pallipes in NW Italy. To this end, we investigated 98 sites. We performed Principal Component Analysis using chemical-physical parameters, collected in both presence and absence sites. We then used principal components with eigenvalue > 1 to run Discriminant Function Analysis and Logistic Regression. The statistics on the concentration of Ca2+, water hardness, pH and BOD5 were significantly different in the presence and in the absence sites. pH and BOD5 played the most important role in separating the presence from the absence locations. These findings are further evidence that we should reduce dissolved organic matter and fine particles in order to contribute to species management and conservation.  相似文献

Dynamic cellular processes occurring in time and space are fundamental to all physiology and disease. To understand complex and dynamic cellular processes therefore demands the capacity to record and integrate quantitative multiparametric data from the four spatiotemporal dimensions within which living cells self-organize, and to subsequently use these data for the mathematical modeling of cellular systems. To this end, a raft of complementary developments in automated fluorescence microscopy, cell microarray platforms, quantitative image analysis and data mining, combined with multivariate statistics and computational modeling, now coalesce to produce a new research strategy, “systems microscopy”, which facilitates systems biology analyses of living cells. Systems microscopy provides the crucial capacities to simultaneously extract and interrogate multiparametric quantitative data at resolution levels ranging from the molecular to the cellular, thereby elucidating a more comprehensive and richly integrated understanding of complex and dynamic cellular systems. The unique capacities of systems microscopy suggest that it will become a vital cornerstone of systems biology, and here we describe the current status and future prospects of this emerging field, as well as outlining some of the key challenges that remain to be overcome.  相似文献

A spectrum of eight pharmacologically important secondary compounds, all putatively belonging to the polyketide pathway (hypericin, pseudohypericin, emodin, hyperforin, hyperoside, rutin, quercetin, and quercitrin) were analyzed in several hypericin-producing species of Hypericum by LC–MS/MS. Different organs such as leaves, stems and roots of wild-grown plants of Hypericum hirsutum L., Hypericum maculatum Crantz s. l., Hypericum montanum L., Hypericum tetrapterum Fr. collected in Slovakia and of Hypericum perforatum L. collected in India were examined individually. Highest contents of hypericin, pseudohypericin, and emodin were found in H. montanum, suggesting that there are alternative species to H. perforatum with high pharmaceutical value. Amounts of hyperforin and quercetin were highest in H. perforatum, whereas highest contents of hyperoside and quercitrin were found in H. maculatum. A significant positive correlation between hypericin and pseudohypericin as well as between hypericin and emodin was observed by Kruskal’s multidimensional scaling (MDS), indicating a parallel enhancement of emodin as a common precursor in the biosynthetic pathways of hypericin and pseudohypericin. Furthermore, MDS combined with principal component analysis (PCA) revealed strong correlations in the occurrence of pseudohypericin and emodin, pseudohypericin and quercitrin, hypericin and quercitrin, emodin and quercitrin, hyperoside and quercitrin, rutin and quercetin, and, hyperforin and quercetin. On the other hand, rutin showed a negative correlation with emodin as well as with quercitrin. Furthermore, hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis (HACA) clustered hypericin and pseudohypericin, grouping emodin at equal distance from both. Considerable infraspecific variability in secondary compound spectrum and load of different populations of H. maculatum from Slovakia underscores the need for detailed studies of genotypic variation and environmental factors in relation to polyketide biosynthesis and accumulation.  相似文献

目的:急性前壁心肌梗死明显影响室间隔收缩率和左心室射血分数(left ventricular ejection fraction LVEF)。本文旨在探讨心肌带降段及升段收缩率与急性前壁心肌梗死患者LVEF的相关性。方法:收集2015年4月-2017年2月在心内科住院的急性前壁心肌梗死患者36例,正常对照组患者39例。所有患者取左心室长轴M型超声心动图,测量室间隔收缩率、升段收缩率及降段收缩率。心肌梗死左心室射血分数采用双平面Simpson's法计算。结果:与正常对照组相比,心肌梗死组患者舒张末期心肌带升段厚度没有统计学差异(P=0.69),收缩末期升段厚度(P=0.014)更薄、升段收缩率(P0.01)明显降低;心肌梗死组舒张末期降段厚度(P0.01)更薄、收缩末期降段厚度(P0.01)更薄、降段收缩率(P0.01)明显降低;心肌梗死组左心室射血分数与降段收缩率(r~2=0.13,P=0.026)、室间隔增厚率(r~2=0.19,P0.01)呈正相关,与升段收缩率没有相关性(P0.05)。正常对照组左心室射血分数与室间隔增厚率、降段增厚率及升段增厚率无相关性。经过相关分析,筛选出与心肌梗死LVEF的相关因素,进一步经逐步回归分析,得多元线性回归方程为LVEF=48.206+18.914*LVDD(cm)-25.414*LVSD(cm)。结论:急性前壁心肌梗死室间隔降段收缩率明显受损,与左心室射血分数降低有关。多元线性回归方程可估算前壁心肌梗死LVEF。  相似文献

Multivariate analysis, which has often been used effectively in paleontological work, was performed on 17 specimens of Plasmoporella collected from a bed of the Xiazhen Formation in the Zhuzhai section of Yushan area, China. Frequency histograms, simple correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that five morphological characters, i.e., diameter of tabularium (DC), distance between neighboring septa (DNS), distance between opposite septa (DOS), distance between corallites (DBC), and number of corallites per cm2 (N) were suitable for cluster analysis. Moreover, PCA suggested that the coralla could be divided into two groups. Cluster analysis with squared Euclidean distances calculated based on the selected five morphological characters was conducted on the raw matrix to discriminate “morphospecies”. As a result, two groups were extracted in the dendrogram. The validity or distinctiveness of the groups was tested by discriminant analysis (DA). The analysis confirmed that the assemblage of coralla can be divided successfully into two groups, which are interpreted as two morphospecies. A qualitative comparison between two reported species and the studied morphospecies showed that morphospecies A is Plasmoporella shiyanshanensis Lin and Chow, 1977 and B is Plasmoporella kasachstanica Bondarenko, 1958. In addition, DA indicated that DOS and DNS were effective to distinguish the two morphospecies. Bivariate plots based on the two morphospecies were used to illustrate the range of variation, which showed that intraspecific variation in these characters was obvious but interspecific variation was not.  相似文献

Cinara sp. nov., previously identified as Cinara cupressi (Buckton) (Homoptera: Aphididae), is an important alien aphid pest of cypresses and junipers, and invaded Africa in the late 1980s. The work reported here was carried out as part of a larger programme aimed at the classical biological control of the aphid in Africa. Basic life history attributes including life table statistics of the aphid were quantified in order to facilitate the development of efficient aphid culturing methods and essential baseline information necessary for the culturing of potential parasitoid biological agents prior to selection for introduction to Africa. Developmental rates and fecundity were studied under four constant temperatures (10 °C, 15 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C). The effects of several plant nutrients (nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus) supplied at different dose levels on life history attributes of Cinara sp. nov. were also studied.Unlike most other aphids, the apterous morph of Cinara sp. nov. developed through only three instars, and the alate four instars. The aphid is highly aggregative and exploits a wide range of feeding sites from young green branches to woody stems. The developmental period of Cinara sp. nov. ranged from 9.3 days at 25 °C to 22.3 days at 10 °C and the developmental threshold was 0.61 °C. Reproduction was delayed, because of the longer duration of development, and nymph production decreased with decreasing temperature. The intrinsic rate of increase ranged between 0.117 at 25 °C and 0.060 at 10 °C. Aphid size increased significantly as temperature was lowered. Wing formation was not induced when apterae were reared for up to three generations at each constant temperature but continuous crowding in the supply cultures held at 21 °C resulted in a high number of alates being formed. No appreciable effects of the different plant nutrients, supplied either singly or in combination, on the duration of instars or overall survival could be detected.  相似文献

Summary Twenty characters were measured on 60 tomato varieties cultivated in the open-air and in polyethylene plastic-house. Data were analyzed by means of principal components, factorial discriminant methods, Mahalanobis D2 distances and principal coordinate techniques. Factorial discriminant and Mahalanobis D2 distances methods, both of which require collecting data plant by plant, lead to similar conclusions as the principal components method that only requires taking data by plots. Characters that make up the principal components in both environments studied are the same, although the relative importance of each one of them varies within the principal components. By combining information supplied by multivariate analysis with the inheritance mode of characters, crossings among cultivars can be experimented with that will produce heterotic hybrids showing characters within previously established limits.  相似文献
