The marine environment can be extremely dangerous, and the harm caused by marine organisms when they contact the human body can be especially harmful, even deadly. Contact includes stings, bites, wounds, and consumption as food. In this article, the characteristics of the common marine biological injuries are summarized, the major marine organisms causing damage in China’s marine waters are described, and injury prevention and treatment methods are discussed.  相似文献

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria associated with wounds are extremely escalating. This study aims to survey different wounds in Alexandria hospitals, North Egypt, to explore the prevalence and characteristics of MDR bacteria for future utilization in antibacterial wound dressing designs. Among various bacterial isolates, we determined 22 MDR bacteria could resist different classes of antibiotics. The collected samples exhibited the prevalence of mono-bacterial infections (60%), while 40% included poly-bacterial species due to previous antibiotic administration. Moreover, Gram-negative bacteria showed dominance with a ratio of 63.6%, while Gram-positive bacteria reported 36.4%. Subsequently, the five most virulent bacteria were identified following the molecular approach by 16S rRNA and physiological properties using the VITEK 2 automated system. They were deposited in GenBank as Staphylococcus haemolyticus MST1 (KY550377), Pseudomonas aeruginosa MST2 (KY550378), Klebsiella pneumoniae MST3 (KY550379), Escherichia coli MST4 (KY550380), and Escherichia coli MST5 (KY550381). In terms of isolation source, S. haemolyticus MST1 was isolated from a traumatic wound, while P. aeruginosa MST2 and E. coli MST4 were procured from hernia surgical wounds, and K. pneumoniae MST3 and E. coli MST5 were obtained from diabetic foot ulcers. Antibiotic sensitivity tests exposed that K. pneumoniae MST3, E. coli MST4, and E. coli MST5 are extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) bacteria. Moreover, S. haemolyticus MST1 belongs to the methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococcus (MRCoNS), whereas P. aeruginosa MST2 exhibited resistance to common empirical bactericidal antibiotics. Overall, the study provides new insights into the prevalent MDR bacteria in Egypt for further use as specific models in formulating antibacterial wound dressings.  相似文献

Three protistan genomes were analyzed for differential genetic traits that may be associated with biological adaptations to their unique life styles. The microsporidian, Encephalitozoon cuniculi, an obligate intracellular parasite; the ascomycetes, Pneumocystis carinii, considered an opportunistic pathogen; and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a model organism exhibiting a free-living life style, were used in comparisons of genomic architecture, reproductive strategies, and metabolic capacity predicted by the presence of signature genes. Genome size, gene number, and metabolic function decreased as the organisms became more dependent on their hosts. In contrast, gene density and the percentage of genes dedicated to cell growth and division were substantially increased in the genome of E. cuniculi. The obligate life style was associated with reductions in gene number, genome size, and reduced metabolic capacity while the free-living life style was coincident with gene duplications and duplication of large portions of the genome. The genomic characteristics and metabolic capacity of P. carinii were usually intermediate between those of the other two protistan genomes, but unique characteristics such as the presence of a single rDNA locus may indicate that these organisms could be in the process of becoming more host dependent.  相似文献

A genetic model was proposed to simultaneously investigate genetic effects of both polygenes and several single genes for quantitative traits of diploid plants and animals. Mixed linear model approaches were employed for statistical analysis. Based on two mating designs, a full diallel cross and a modified diallel cross including F2, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to evaluate the unbiasedness and efficiency of the estimation of generalized least squares (GLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) for fixed effects and of minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimation (MINQUE) and Henderson III for variance components. Estimates of MINQUE (1) were unbiased and efficient in both reduced and full genetic models. Henderson III could have a large bias when used to analyze the full genetic model. Simulation results also showed that GLS and OLS were good methods to estimate fixed effects in the genetic models. Data on Drosophila melanogaster from Gilbert were used as a worked example to demonstrate the parameter estimation. Received: 11 November 2000 / Accepted: 2 May 2001  相似文献

The Killarney fern Trichomanes speciosum Willd. (Hymenophyllaceae) is unique in possessing both extensive sexual (sporophyte and gametophyte generations present) and asexual (gametophyte only) ranges. It was first discovered in central Europe in 1993 and is represented in this area only by its perennial, vegetatively propagating gametophyte generation. Genetic variation has been investigated at 35 sites. Allozyme diversity is partitioned primarily between, not within, sites. Although genetic variation exists at a fine scale (lt 5 m) within some populations, the results suggest that clones were not intimately associated in these cases. The majority of sites support unique multilocus phenotypes. Where phenotypes were present at more than one site they tended to recur at the next closest site. However, similar phenotypes link eastern and western Pfälzerwald sites up to c. 70 km apart. This pattern of diversity suggests that colonisation was not solely of a “stepping stone” or “leading edge” type. We suggest that during a climatically favourable period, probably the Atlantic hypsithermal, there may have been an explosive colonisation by long-distance dispersal from refugial areas. This was followed by a short period during which sporophyte production, sexual reproduction and local spread were possible. With climatic change, reduction in the available habitat and the loss of the sporophyte generation, different individual genets became fixed within small, favourable, but scattered, sites. The possibility that some central European sites north of the Alps acted as periglacial refugia cannot be discounted, but would appear less likely than (re-) colonisation from the Atlantic fringe.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity may be adaptive if the phenotype expressed in a focal environment performs better there relative to alternative phenotypes. Plasticity in morphology may particularly benefit modular organisms that must tolerate environmental change with limited mobility, yet this hypothesis has rarely been evaluated for the modular inhabitants of subtidal marine environments. We test the hypothesis for Asparagopsis armata , a clonal red seaweed whose growth-form plasticity across light environments is consistent with the concept of foraging behaviour in clonal plants. We manipulated the light intensity to obtain clonal replicates of compact, densely branched ('phalanx') phenotypes and elongate, sparsely branched ('guerrilla') phenotypes, which we reciprocally transplanted between inductive light environments to explore the performance consequences of a poor phenotype–environment match. Consistent with the hypothesis of adaptive plasticity, we found that performance (as relative growth rate) depended significantly on the interaction between growth form and environment. Each growth form performed better in its inductive environment than the alternative form, implying that this type of plasticity, thought to be adaptive for clonal plants, may also benefit photoautotrophs in marine environments. Given the prevalence and diversity of modular phyla in such systems, they offer a relatively unexplored opportunity to broaden our understanding of the evolutionary ecology of phenotypic plasticity.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 80–89.  相似文献

Two guiding principles identify which biological entities are able to evolve adaptations. Williams'' principle holds that, in order for an entity to evolve adaptations, there must be selection between such entities. Maynard Smith''s principle holds that, in order for an entity to evolve adaptations, selection within such entities must be absent or negligible. However, although the kinship theory of genomic imprinting suggests that parent-of-origin-specific gene expression evolves as a consequence of natural selection acting between—rather than within—individuals, it evades adaptive interpretation at the individual level and is instead viewed as an outcome of an intragenomic conflict of interest between an individual''s genes. Here, I formalize the idea that natural selection drives intragenomic conflicts of interest between genes originating from different parents. Specifically, I establish mathematical links between the dynamics of natural selection and the idea of the gene as an intentional, inclusive-fitness-maximizing agent, and I clarify the role that information about parent of origin plays in mediating conflicts of interest between genes residing in the same genome. These results highlight that the suppression of divisive information may be as important as the suppression of lower levels of selection in maintaining the integrity of units of adaptation.  相似文献
