Alginate-entrapped cells of Mucuna pruriens as well as the phenoloxidase isolated from the cell cultures, are able to ortho-hydroxylate several mono-, bi- and tri-cyclic monophenols. In this study, 7,8-dihydroxy N-di-n-propyl 2-aminotetralin, a catechol of pharmaceutical interest and difficult to prepare chemically, could be produced in considerable quantities by bioconversion of the precursor 7-hydroxy N-di-n-propyl 2-aminotetralin. A continuous flow system on a laboratory scale was used, which consisted of a phenoloxidase suspension in dialysis tubing as the biocatalysator in an airlift fermentor coupled with an aluminium oxide column for selective product isolation. Product formation continued for at least 50 h, resulting in ca. 130 mg product per liter, this being a bioconversion percentage of 25%. Effective pollinators in Fabaceae species with papillionaceous flowers should have sufficient force to open the petals and expose the stamens and pistils from the keel petals. Here, we assessed the force that is required (operative force) to open the petals of the mammal‐pollinated Mucuna macrocarpa, in parallel with estimating the force of bee species. The operative force of M. macrocarpa was quantified by a digital force gauge and the force of three bee species that frequent these flowers was estimated from body mass. The operative force was 1.635 ± 0.146 (mean ± SD) newton (N). This force was far larger than that estimated for the largest bee in the study area. In addition, the operative force of M. macrocarpa was 16–409 times greater than that of bee‐pollinated plants. Our results demonstrate that the operative force of M. macrocarpa flowers is adapted to mammalian openers, preventing potential nectar robbers.  相似文献

A Forssman antigen (GalNAc1-3GalNAc1-3Gal1-4Gal1-4Glc1-1Cer)-binding lectin has been purified from velvet bean (Mucuna derringiana) seeds by a combination of affinity chromatography and reversed phase HPLC. This lectin agglutinates both native and trypsin-treated sheep erythrocytes as well as trypsinized rabbit erythrocytes, but neither native rabbit nor human erythrocytes, irrespective of blood group type. SDS-PAGE and gel filtration chromatography reveal the lectin to be a homodimer consisting of two 54 kDa subunits linked by non-covalent bonds. The results obtained by quantitative precipitation, haemagglutination inhibition and TLC overlay assays indicate that theMucuna lectin specifically recognizes Forssman antigen and Forssman disaccharide (GalNAc1-3GalNAc)-related structures. Increasing surface levels of UV-B resulting from stratospheric ozone reduction directly affect tropospheric photochemistry. There may also be indirect tropospheric effects due to changes in emission of organic compounds from vegetation. We treated woody and herbaceous isoprene-emitting species in the field with supplemental UV-B simulating 30% ozone depletion. For Quercus gambelii, photosynthesis and isoprene emission were significantly greater in elevated UV-B treatments when expressed on a leaf area basis, but not on a leaf mass basis. Leaves of Mucuna pruriens, however, showed no significant differences in photosynthesis or isoprene emission between treatments, nor when exposed for 45 min to acute high levels of UV-B. Elevated UV-B during growth did not elicit significant isoprene emission from Acer platanoides, a non-emitting species. Other potential UV-B effects, such as changes in leaf area or species composition, which may influence regional isoprene emissions, should be examined.  相似文献

The etiology and epidemiology of concentric leaf spot and seedling blight diseases of yam (Dioscorea spp) was investigated at Jbadan, south western Nigeria, in the low land humid tropics. Sclerotium rolfsii was associated with the concentric leaf spot and seedling blight of yam. The pathogen was also harbored by weeds namely Mucuna pruriensis, Commelina erecta, ipomea triloba, I. involucrataand Ipomoea sp found growing within the yam plots. A high mean inoculum densities of 3.0 ± 0.5 × 106 colony forming unit/g of soil was estimated in the soil samples obtained from the yam plots This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pollinator shifts are often related to speciation in angiosperms, and the relationship between them has been discussed in several plant taxa. Although limited information on plants pollinated by non-flying mammals in Central and South America and Africa is available, related research has not been conducted in Asia. Herein, I summarize the available knowledge of pollination in Asian Mucuna (Fabaceae), a genus mainly distributed in the tropics, and discuss the evolution of plants pollinated by non-flying mammals in Asia. Nineteen pollinator species have been recorded and pollination systems have been categorized into four types. An examination of the relationship between Mucuna species and their pollinators from the lineage perspective revealed that all species in Mucuna, subgenus Macrocarpa, which are distributed in Asia, are pollinated exclusively by non-flying mammals. Additionally, plants pollinated by non-flying mammals were found to have diverged from bat-pollinated and non-flying mammal-pollinated plants, while plants pollinated by non-flying mammals have evolved multiple times. This is a unique example of evolutionary transition. I hypothesize that the diversification of squirrel species in tropical Asia may have led to the speciation and diversification of Mucuna in Asia. Furthermore, the behavioural and ecological characteristics of bats and birds in Asia differ from the characteristics of those in other regions, implying that Asian Mucuna species do not rely on bat or bird pollinators. The adaptation of floral characteristics to pollinators is not well understood in Asia. Mammal-pollinated plants in Asia may have evolved differently from those in other regions and have unique pollination systems.  相似文献

白花油麻藤是豆科黧豆属大型木质藤本植物。运用Diva-Gis软件,结合海拔高度图层和植被图层绘制了白花油麻藤的地理分布图,分析了白花油麻藤的分布规律和生境特性;以Maxent模型作为物种适生性预测模型,温度和降水作为预测的环境因子,预测了白花油麻藤在中国的适生区。结果表明:白花油麻藤在中国27.5°N以南中低海拔10~1200m有分布,如山坡、路旁、沟谷、溪边及林下灌丛;喜温暖湿润气候,广东为白花油麻藤分布最为密集的地区。白花油麻藤的分布与植被类型和海拔有着密切的关系,分布区的植被类型为亚热带常绿阔叶林和热带季雨林,随着植被分布密度的降低和海拔的升高白花油麻藤的分布范围和分布密度呈逐渐缩小的趋势。白花油麻藤在中国的潜在分布区为粤、桂、闽、港、澳、滇、琼、赣、川、黔、藏、湘、浙等省区及交界处,其种质资源的保存及其利用应考虑其潜在分布区。  相似文献

Floral traits are adapted by plants to attract pollinators. Some of those plants that have different pollinators in different regions adapt to each pollinator in each region to maximize their pollination success. Mucuna macrocarpa (Fabaceae) limits the pollinators using its floral structure and is pollinated by different mammals in different regions. Here, we examine the relationships between floral traits of M. macrocarpa and the external morphology of mammalian pollinators in different regions of its distribution. Field surveys were conducted on Kyushu and Okinawajima Island in Japan, and in Taiwan, where the main pollinators are the Japanese macaque Macaca fuscata, Ryukyu flying fox Pteropus dasymallus, and red‐bellied squirrel Callosciurus erythraeus, respectively. We measured the floral shapes, nectar secretion patterns, sugar components, and external morphology of the pollinators. Results showed that floral shape was slightly different among regions and that flower sizes were not correlated with the external morphology of the pollinators. Volume and sugar rate of nectar were not significantly different among the three regions and did not change throughout the day in any of the regions. However, nectar concentration was higher in Kyushu than in the other two regions. These results suggest that the floral traits of M. macrocarpa are not adapted to each pollinator in each region. Although this plant limits the number of pollinators using its flower structure, it has not adapted to specific mammals and may attract several species of mammals. Such generalist‐like pollination system might have evolved in the Old World.  相似文献

The changes in antioxidant enzyme activity during the induction of adventitious roots in mung bean seedlings treated with Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ascorbic acid (ASA) and diphenylene iodonium (DPI) were investigated. As compared with the controls, treatments of seedlings with 10 μM IBA significantly decreased POD activity by 55% and 49.6% at 3 h and 12 h of incubation, respectively, and significantly increased by 49.8% at 36 h of incubation; treatments of seedlings with 10 mM H2O2 significantly decreased POD activity by 42%, 60%, 39% and 38% at 3 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h of incubation, respectively, the changes in POD activity were coincident with those in IBA-treated seedlings during the 0–12 h incubation period; treatments of seedlings with 2 mM ASA significantly decreased APX activities by 27% only at 3 h of incubation, the varying trend of POD activity was similar to incubation with water; 10 μM DPI treatments significantly decreased POD activity by 42%, 40%, 54% and 28% at 3 h, 6 h, 12 h and 48 h of treatment, respectively. CAT activities remained at relatively stable levels and no major changes occurred from 0 h to 48 h during the incubation phase of adventitious rooting. The results may imply that CAT, an H2O2-metabolizing enzyme, is inactivated by H2O2 during the formation of adventitious roots. As compared with the controls, IBA treatments significantly decreased APX activities by 48%, 53% and 66% at 3 h, 9 h and 12 h of treatment, respectively; H2O2 treatments significantly decreased APX activities by 59%, 51% and 57% at 3 h, 12 h and 36 h of incubation, respectively; ASA treatments significantly decreased APX activities by 37% only at 3 h of incubation; DPI treatments significantly decreased APX activities by 54%, 53% and 63% at 3 h, 6 h and 12 h of incubation, respectively, and significantly increased APX activity by 106% at 24 h. These results indicated that the influence of IBA, H2O2, ASA and DPI on the changes in APX activity were the same as on the changes in POD activity. Furthermore, similar trends in the changes of APX activity and POD activity were observed during the induction and initiation rooting phase. This finding implies that APX and POD serve the same functions, possibly related to the level of H2O2, during the formation of adventitious roots. The early decrease of POD and APX activities in the initiation phase of IBA- and H2O2-treated seedlings may be one mechanism underlying the IBA- and H2O2-mediated facilitation of adventitious rooting.  相似文献
