Black shading nets are commonly used to protect agricultural crops from excessive solar radiation and wind, and for water saving. Recent studies have demonstrated that when black nets were replaced by either red, yellow, or pearl nets (ChromatiNets?) of equivalent shading capacity, it increased the fruit yield and improved the quality of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) and tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) (both Solanaceae). We studied the effects of these colored shading nets on the infestation by aphids [Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Aphis gossypii Glover (both Hemiptera: Aphididae)] and whiteflies [Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)], and the incidence of the viral diseases transmitted by these insects, for five consecutive years (2006–2010). These studies were conducted in the semi‐arid Besor region in southern Israel. The plants were grown in ‘walk‐in’ tunnels that were covered by several nets of 35% shading capacity in the range of photosynthetically active radiation. Although the shading nets permit free passage of these pests, the infestation levels of aphids and whiteflies in tunnels covered by either the yellow or pearl nets were consistently 2–3× lower than in tunnels covered by the black or red nets. In accordance with the pest results, when the incidences of Cucumber mosaic virus in pepper grown under the black or red nets ranged between 35 and 89%, they were 2–10× lower under the yellow or pearl nets. Similarly, when the incidences of necrotic Potato virus Y in tomato grown under black or red nets ranged between 42 and 50%, they were 2–3× lower under the yellow or pearl nets. Also, when the incidences of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus in tomato grown under the black or red nets ranged between 15 and 50%, but they were 2–4× lower under the yellow or pearl nets. Frugivorous insects utilize both olfactory and visual cues to locate their host plants. Although volatiles have been extensively studied for detecting infested fruits, the role of visual cues in oviposition site selection remains mostly unknown among frugivorous insects. To investigate physiological changes in a host plant, we measured the quantum yield and reflectance of three wavelengths of light (350, 450 and 520 nm) after puncturing the surfaces of commercially grown pumpkins using insect pins during two different seasons outdoors. Quantum yields did not show significant differences between undamaged and simulated oviposition sites. Two wavelengths within the visual spectrum were similar between the two treatments. However, photon counts at 350 nm, in the ultraviolet range, were 1.76 fold higher in simulated oviposition sites than in undamaged sites, which was consistently observed across three field seasons. Considering that frugivorous insects and other phytophagous insects recognize the 350 nm wavelength for host identification and oviposition, we conclude that the disparities in ultraviolet reflectance can serve as a baseline for assessing the actual oviposition response of fruit flies. This finding contributes to the role of visual cues in the oviposition behavior of frugivorous insects and the development of a nondestructive detection method for pumpkin fruit flies. 相似文献

Projection of land use and land-cover change is highly uncertain yet drives critical estimates of carbon emissions, climate change, and food and bioenergy production. We use new, spatially explicit land availability data in conjunction with a model sensitivity analysis to estimate the effects of additional land protection on land use and land cover. The land availability data include protected land and agricultural suitability and is incorporated into the Moirai land data system for initializing the Global Change Analysis Model. Overall, decreasing land availability is relatively inefficient at preserving undeveloped land while having considerable regional land-use impacts. Current amounts of protected area have little effect on land and crop production estimates, but including the spatial distribution of unsuitable (i.e., unavailable) land dramatically shifts bioenergy production from high northern latitudes to the rest of the world, compared with uniform availability. This highlights the importance of spatial heterogeneity in understanding and managing land change. Approximately doubling the current protected area to emulate a 30% protected area target may avoid land conversion by 2050 of less than half the newly protected extent while reducing bioenergy feedstock land by 10.4% and cropland and grazed pasture by over 3%. Regional bioenergy land may be reduced (increased) by up to 46% (36%), cropland reduced by up to 61%, pasture reduced by up to 100%, and harvested forest reduced by up to 35%. Only a few regions show notable gains in some undeveloped land types of up to 36%. Half of the regions can reach the target using only unsuitable land, which would minimize impacts on agriculture but may not meet conservation goals. Rather than focusing on an area target, a more robust approach may be to carefully select newly protected land to meet well-defined conservation goals while minimizing impacts to agriculture. 相似文献

Management generally targets the most tractable life stage to rescue declining populations; however, that stage may not have the largest influence on recovery. Freshwater turtles are declining globally and early stages are frequently targeted for management, although the effectiveness of these actions on population growth are relatively unknown because of incomplete demographic data. We estimated the hatchling yearly survival rate for a freshwater turtle in the field using in situ enclosures to collect missing demographic information. We used these data to develop demographic models to calculate growth rate for a hypothetical, declining population of wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) in Wisconsin, USA, 2014–2019. We modeled growth for populations across a range of scenarios from no management to combinations of nest protection and head-starting at varying levels of effort. Nest protection alone did not increase population growth rate, while head-starting alone increased population growth by 0.07, with the largest increase in growth rate, 0.11, resulting from combinations of both approaches. No combination of nest protection and head-starting, without an increase in adult survival rate from the observed 0.88 to ≥0.95, led to population stabilization or increase. Populations of freshwater turtles, like the wood turtle, will likely only recover with a multi-faceted approach that targets multiple life stages simultaneously. 相似文献

This study presents a new technological approach to minimize the use of antimicrobial (AMB) agents and their deleterious effects, based on the principle of drug-delivery systems whereby the AMB chemicals are transported on microparticles. The efficacy of microparticles carrying the quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), benzyldimethyldodecyl ammonium chloride (BDMDAC), was assessed against Pseudomonas fluorescens in both the planktonic and the biofilm state. The microparticles were prepared using a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. Oppositely charged molecules of polyethyleneimine (PEI), sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), and BDMDAC were assembled on polystyrene (PS) cores. BDMDAC-coated particles were observed by CryoSEM and their composition analyzed by X-ray microanalysis. Zeta potential measurements indicated that changes in surface charge were compatible with a BDMDAC/particle interaction. This biocidal carrier structure had significant stability, verified by the release of only 15% of the BDMDAC when immersed in water for 18 months. Biocidal carrier activity was evaluated by determining the survival ratio of P. fluorescens planktonic and biofilm cells after different exposure periods to BDMDAC-coated particles. Tests with biofilm cells were also performed with the free QAC. An efficient AMB effect (minimum bactericidal concentration) against suspended cells was found for a concentration of 9.2 mg l?1 of BDMDAC on coated particles after incubation for 30 min and 6.5 mg l?1 of BDMDAC on coated particles after 60 min. Exposure of biofilms to PS-PEI/PSS/BDMDAC (0.87 mg l?1) resulted in a decrease in viability of 60.5% and 66.5% of the total biofilm population for 30 and 60 min exposure times, respectively. Exposure for 60 min to 6.33 mg l?1 and 11.75 mg l?1 of BDMDAC in PS-PEI/PSS/BDMDAC particles promoted inactivation of 80.6% and 87.2% of the total population, respectively. The AMB effects obtained with the application of free BDMDAC were statistically similar to those promoted by the application of BDMDAC coated particles. The overall results indicate that this novel AMB strategy has potential for the control of microbial growth of planktonic cells and biofouling. Moreover, the technique allows the reuse of AMB molecules and consequently reduces the environmental risks associated with excessive use of AMB agents, thereby providing real benefits to public health. 相似文献

Creation of the big trophical niches of the winter pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana Schiff.) on susceptible trees of Pinus silvestris L. provoked the mass outbreak of the pest in the south areas in Ukraine. In its turn, high density of the pest induced processes of the aggressivity's growth of population. In so doing the wide range of adaptive zones represented by groups of the pines with different resistance is favourable for formation of aggressive biotypes. The spreading of the pest from weakened to more resistant groups on the pines is similar to the process of “drift”. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) permits state parties to establish an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) 200 nautical miles from their coast. Coastal states have exclusive jurisdiction over resources within the EEZ, but navigational and other high seas freedoms continue to exist. A significant number of states have, however, enacted legislation that departs from the LOSC, interfering with the navigational rights and freedoms of other states. This article analzses this development with a specific focus on the Arctic. It investigates the powers of Arctic coastal states to regulate shipping in the EEZ and thereby navigation in the Arctic Ocean. It adds to the existing literature by providing an analysis of state practice, suggesting that despite uncertainty concerning the interpretation of the LOSC Article 234 and the right to exercise legislative jurisdiction over ice-covered waters, a not insignificant number of states have claimed jurisdiction in their own EEZ beyond the rights granted in the LOSC, and are therefore not in a position to object to extensive jurisdictional claims in the Arctic. 相似文献

Telomere protects the ends of linear chromosomes. Telomere dysfunction fuels genome instability that can lead to diseases such as cancer. For over 30 years, Drosophila has fascinated the field as the only major model organism that does not rely on the conserved telomerase enzyme for end protection. Instead of short DNA repeats at chromosome ends, Drosophila has domesticated retrotransposons. In addition, telomere protection can be entirely sequence-independent under normal laboratory conditions, again dissimilar to what has been established for telomerase-maintained systems. Despite these major differences, recent studies from us and others have revealed remarkable similarities between the 2 systems. In particular, with the identification of the MTV complex as an ssDNA binding complex essential for telomere integrity in Drosophila (Zhang et al. 2016 Plos Genetics), we have now established several universal principles that are intrinsic to chromosome extremities but independent of the underlying DNA sequences or the telomerase enzyme. Telomere studies in Drosophila will continue to yield fundamental insights that are instrumental to the understanding of the evolution of telomere and telomeric functions. 相似文献
