Malaria is a disease caused by protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium. It is widespread and becoming a challenge in several African countries in the tropical and subtropical regions. In 2010, a report was published showing that over 1.2 million death cases were occurred globally due to malaria in just one year. The transmission of the disease from one person to another occurs via the bite of the Anopheles female. It is known that Plasmodium ovale, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. falciparum, and P. knowlesi are the highly infective malaria species. The problem of this disease is the absence of any effective medical treatment or vaccine, making the mosquito control is the only feasible way for disease prevention. Pesticides are currently the most widely used method for mosquito control, despite its well-known negative effects, including health hazards on human, the increasing insecticidal resistance, and the negative impact on the environment and beneficial organisms. Biological control (also called: biocontrol) of insects has been a promising method to overcome the negative effects of using chemical insecticides, as it depends on just using the natural enemies of pests to either minimize their populations or eradicate them. This article provides an overview of the recent and effective biological means to control malaria, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, larvivorous fish, toxorhynchites larva and nematodes. In addition, the importance, advantages, and disadvantages of the biocontrol methods will be discussed in comparison with the traditionally used chemical methods of malaria control with special reference to nanotechnology as a novel method for insects’ control. 相似文献

Conversion of light energy to heat via photothermal conversion agents (PTCAs) is of great interest and has potential applications. Here, we described a heptamethine cyanine (Cy7) dye nanoparticles (Cy7-PEG NPs) prepared from heptamethine cyanine and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400) via a simple solvothermal process as novel PTCA. Cy7-PEG NPs have absorption maximum at about 808 nm and good photothermal conversion ability. Upon irradiation, Cy7-PEG NPs can effectively kill living mosquito larva (Aedes albopictus) through heat generation. Furthermore, Cy7-PEG NPs have excellent phototoxic activity to Sf9, HeLa and MCF-7 cells. Our results indicated that Cy7-PEG NPs can be used as controlling agent for mosquito larvae and cancer cells. 相似文献

Here we provide evidence that confinement in Robinson Crusoe Island (located about 660 km west of continental Chile) over evolutionary time leads to strong morphological modifications in diving beetle (Dytiscidae) larvae. We analysed a large set of morphological larval characters for all currently recognised genera of Colymbetinae as a framework, to infer phylogenetic relationships within the large genus Rhantus Dejean, 1833 and, in particular, of the charismatic Juan Fernández diving beetle, Rhantus selkirki Jäch, Balke & Michat, 2015, comparing our results with a recent phylogeny of the Colymbetinae based on DNA sequence data. We suggest that adaptation to the island's particular habitats resulted in the reversal of certain characters of R. selkirki back to the plesiomorphic states. This may cause the species to be erroneously interpreted as more ‘primitive’ if only morphological characters are analysed. Confinement in the particular, shallow and barely vegetated aquatic habitats of Robinson Crusoe Island for a long time seems to have led to this divergent morphology, particularly in characters related to swimming ability such as several leg and urogomphal setae. In this way, R. selkirki larvae secondarily resemble those of some earlier diverging dytiscid lineages such as Agabinae and Copelatinae, which typically creep on the bottom of water bodies and do not swim well. 相似文献

The protein crystals produced by Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) are used against the larvae of pestiferous flood-water mosquitoes in ephemeral wetlands. Although mosquito larvae are
considered important predators on protozoans and bacteria, it is not known how a distinct reduction of mosquito larvae density
in natural wetlands caused by application of Bti may indirectly affect these microbial communities. Here we show, in a large
scale experiment in six natural wetlands, that the densities of heterotrophic protozoans was on an average 4.5 times higher
in wetland areas treated with Bti than in control areas. In addition, the taxonomic richness of heterotrophic protozoans increased
on an average of 60% in areas with Bti application compared to control areas. The increase in protozoan density and richness
was fairly consistent among sites of different wetland habitats. We discuss the potential implications of our results for
other parts of the ecosystem.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of disease. These insects respond to invading organisms with strong cellular and humoral immune responses that share many similarities with vertebrate immune systems. The strength and specificity of these responses are directly correlated to a mosquito's ability to transmit disease. In the current study, we characterized the hemocytes (blood cells) of Armigeres subalbatus by morphology (ultrastructure), lectin binding, enzyme activity, immunocytochemistry, and function. We found four hemocyte types: granulocytes, oenocytoids, adipohemocytes, and thrombocytoids. Granulocytes contained acid phosphatase activity and bound the exogenous lectins Helix pomatia agglutinin, Galanthus nivalis lectin, and wheat germ agglutinin. Following bacteria inoculation, granulocytes mounted a strong phagocytic response as early as 5 min postexposure. Bacteria also elicited a hemocyte-mediated melanization response. Phenoloxidase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the melanization pathway, was present exclusively in oenocytoids and in many of the melanotic capsules enveloping bacteria. The immune responses mounted against different bacteria were not identical; gram(–) Escherichia coli were predominantly phagocytosed and gram(+) Micrococcus luteus were melanized. Pythium insidiosum causes pythiosis, an infection that affects different species of mammals, including humans, and inhabits marshy ecosystems of tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide. Therefore, this study proposes a protocol to expose Culex quinquefasciatus to P. insidiosum zoospores. Cx. quinquefasciatus immatures (eggs, larvae, and pupae) were exposed to zoospores (8x103 zoospores/mL) of the oomycete for 24 h. The exposure of Cx. quinquefasciatus to the zoospores from L1 to the emergence of adults was evaluated, and P. insidiosum detection was performed by microbiological culture, polymerase chain reaction, and histopathological analysis of stage 4 larvae. The protocol used to produce Cx. quinquefasciatus colonies and adapted for this study proved viable for research on the interaction between P. insidiosum and this Culicidae species. Moreover, P. insidiosum presence was evident in all larval stages of the mosquito, although the presence of the oomycete was not detected in the eggs, pupae, and adults. This study is a pioneer in the development of a protocol to evaluate Cx. quinquefasciatus exposure to P. insidiosum zoospores, and under experimental conditions, P. insidiosum can establish itself in Cx. quinquefasciatus larval stages. The developed protocol is expected to serve as a basis for developing studies to evaluate the interactions of P. insidiosum with these mosquitoes and shed more light on the participation of culicids in expanding the ecological niche of P. insidiosum. 相似文献

The most common modification of saltmarsh habitat for mosquito control in Australia is runnelling, a system of shallow channels increasing seawater exchange in pools high on the marsh. Local effects within the immediate vicinity of runnels were examined by testing the hypothesis that fish assemblages immediately alongside runnels differ from those further away. Nekton assemblages were sampled using pop nets in winter (May) and summer (December) on a saltmarsh in southeast Queensland, alongside runnels and further (30 m) away, at two distances from a mangrove-lined intertidal creek. Nekton assemblages were dominated numerically (50–80%) by one or two species of small fish (Ambassis marianus, Mugilogobius stigmaticus), and a commercially important prawn, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis. In winter, nekton assemblages alongside runnels were significantly different from those further away. Species richness, total nekton densities and densities of several individual species were higher away from runnels, but only at sites far from the creek. No differences in species richness or densities were found in summer. During both periods, nekton assemblages differed strongly with distance from the creek, with more species and higher densities of most species near the creek. For most species, the overall effect of runnelling appears to be a reduction in abundances in the immediate vicinity of runnels, at some times of year. This is probably related to lower prey availability near runnels. Given the extent of runnelling in some parts of Australia, even this local reduction in densities extending no more than 30 m from runnels means that nekton may be adversely affected over a large total area. The apparent influence of runnels on nekton densities highlights the potential effects of saltmarsh modification on non-target animals that should be considered as this management technique becomes more prevalent. 相似文献
