Copulatory organ, mating posture and locomotion: their interrelationship in non-mammalian vertebrates. This paper demonstrates, for the vertebrate groups discussed, a relationship between mating posture, the length of the copulatory organ, and the respective modes of locomotion. The modes of locomotion in the majority of non-mammalian vertebrate groups presuppose a massive, heavily muscularized, and relatively long tail, which may either reinforce lateral flexions of the trunk or (in animals with rigid trunk) act as the only means of propulsion (e.g. in Chondrichthyes, Teleostei, Lepidosauria, and Crocodylia). Such a massive tail with gradual transition to the trunk necessitates a lateral mating position (regardless of whether the copulatory organ is paired or unpaired). Animals with a flexible trunk will, therefore, generate strongly pronounced laterotruncal flexions (‘dynamic lateral bending’). A long copulatory organ is not necessary (e.g. the short hemipenes of Lepidosauria). Animals with a rigid trunk, on the other hand, will not be capable of copulating unless by means of a relatively long penis or a modified mating posture (e.g. Crocodylia). In the course of phylogeny, whenever a change in the mode of locomotion allows a reduction in tail length, this will lead to a corresponding change in mating posture, with mating then being possible from a posterior position (e.g. Chelonia, Aves, as well as Ascaphus among the Anura). The locomotion of the latter taxa is characterized by a completely or almost completely rigid trunk. Thus, contact between male and female cloaca cannot be assisted by bending movements in the trunk. To compensate for truncal rigidity, there is a trend towards linear extension of the penis, or other male copulatory organs (such as mixopterygia or gonopodia), e.g. in the pelagic Selachians, in Chelonia, and in the flightless ratites. For those birds lacking a penis, the only methods of overcoming truncal rigidity are stationary locomotion (fluttering without forward movement), having a mobile, swivelling cloacal region (uropygium), and simultaneous evagination of the proctodeum of both the male and female. Penguins, being unable to perform stationary fluttering, resort to a somewhat modified mating posture.  相似文献

Nisin, a prominent member of the lantibiotic family of antimicrobial agents, has wide application as a food preservative despite poor understanding of its mode of action. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching has been used with planar lipid bilayers as a model membrane system to examine how nisin might interact with the surface of bacterial cells. Nisin associates with planar lipid bilayers in the absence of an applied membrane potential causing an array of effects consistent with adsorption of nisin onto the membrane surface which involves inhibition of the lateral diffusion and fluorescence of the lipid probe N-(7--1,2,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl) phosphatidylethanolamine (NBD-PE) and a reduction of the capacitance of the bilayer. Nisin adsorption is dependent on phospholipid composition. In the presence of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (PC): cardiolipin (CL) 4:1, the rate of lateral mobility of phospholipid is reduced to 61% of the control level which decreases to a value of 46% when CL is replaced by 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylserine (PS). These effects on bilayer parameters are transient, and with time the values return to near original levels. High electrical conductivity is observed on application of a voltage ramp suggesting that insertion into the membrane follows surface association. Results have been interpreted in terms of a model in which nisin initially binds to the surface of the membrane causing a modulation of bilayer properties. A set of 20 morphological variants of the dental crowns and four characteristics of the jaws are tested for probable mode of inheritance using the complex segregation analysis method of Morton et al. (Am. J. Hum. Genet. 23:602-611, 1971). Models tested include three two-allele single-locus models (dominant, codominant, and recessive) and a model employing the polychotomized normal distribution of liability (an additive polygenic model), with transmissibility estimated via maximum likelihood. Most of the traits studied are observed using ordinal scales with several grades, and many are tested using more than one dichotomy of their scale. These multiple analyses allow for an examination of such factors as trait incidence on the results of the statistical analysis. The results of the analysis yield propositions of major genes for 13 of the 24 traits examined. Two traits give good evidence of being polygenic in origin. The remaining nine characters present methodological problems that do not allow for a definite conclusion on their mode of inheritance at this time. The ability to test varying levels of transmissibility in the polygenic model allows for an estimation of the percentage of trait variance determined by familial factors. Estimates of transmissibility for all characters examined range from 0 to 1, with a mean of 0.36. These findings may suggest a large environmental role in the development of dental crown morphology. However, the possibility exists that difficulties in the ability to classify the expression of certain traits consistently result in overestimates of the environmental influences on the development of those characters.  相似文献

Studies from many laboratories have reported apparent molecular weights for the chick intestinal 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] receptor varying from 47,000 to 67,000 daltons. We report here that in the presence of the protease inhibitor phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF, 0.3 mM) and in the presence or absence of ligand, the apparent molecular weight of the receptor is 99,700 ± 9,400 (SD) daltons (as determined by gel filtration). In the absence of PMSF, however, the unoccupied receptor migrates with an apparent molecular weight of 51,400 ± 5,700 (SD) daltons. This smaller form of the 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor, upon incubation with [3H]-1,25(OH)2D3 in the presence of PMSF, then migrates with an apparent molecular weight of 95,900 ± 7,300 (SD) daltons. These results suggest the presence of heretofore unappreciated multiple molecular forms of the chick intestinal 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor.  相似文献

Summary Bean and tomato seedlings, treated with different amounts of ammonia and chitin, and inoculated with the root-knot nematode,Meloidogyne javanica, were reared in two consecutive 35-day growth of shoot and root and the condition of the root systems of both plant species and degree of infection byM. javanica were decreased by increasing amounts of ammonia. Chitin caused a relatively small reduction in gall formation but almost no changes in fresh shoot weights. The effect of chitin on plant growth and nematode attack were also compared in irradiated and non-irradiated soil. In the first cycle galling index of the chitin treated plant was similar to that of untreated plants maintained in the irradiated soil conditions, while in the non-irradiated soil, chitin treatment reduced galling index. In the second cycle, chitin treatment reduced galling index in both irradiated and non-irradiated soils, especially in the latter, where galling index greatly decreased compared with the non-treated plants. Differences in fresh shoot weight between nematode-infected and nematode-free plants amended with chitin were greater under non-irradiated than irradiated conditions, especially in the second cycle. In non-irradiated soil, a higher level of chitinolytic microorganisms, particularly actinomycetes, was found in the second cycle.
