Invertebrate predator-prey body size relationships: an explanation for upper triangular food webs and patterns in food web structure? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary It has been suggested by Cohen and Newman (1985) that many of the patterns in published food webs can be derived from a stochastic model in which the species are arranged in a trophic hierarchy (the cascade model). We suggest that, if predators are larger than their prey, a trophic hierarchy can be generated on the basis of body size Empirical evidence from the literature shows that there is a positive relationship between predator and prey size for a range of invertebrates and that predators are usually larger than their prey. Using experimental data on an aquatic food web we show that body size can lead to the type of trophic hierarchy used in the cascade model, suggesting that many food web patterns may be a product of body size. This conclusion is discussed with respect to the limitations of the food web data and the relationship between static and dynamic models of web structure. 相似文献

In human diabetes, inherent impaired insulin secretion can be exacerbated by desensitization of the beta cell by chronic hyperglycemia. Interest in this phenomenon has generated extensive studies in genetic or experimentally induced diabetes in animals and in fully in vitro systems, with often conflicting results. In general, although chronic glucose causes decreased beta-cell response to this carbohydrate, basal response and response to alternate stimulating agents are enhanced. Glucose-stimulated insulin synthesis can be increased or decreased depending on the system studied. Using a two-compartment beta-cell model of phasic insulin secretion, a unifying hypothesis is described which can explain some of the apparent conflicting data. This hypothesis suggests that glucose-desensitization is caused by an impairment in stimulation of a hypothetical potentiator singularly responsible for: 1) some of the characteristic phases of insulin secretion; 2) basal release; 3) potentiation of non-glucose stimulators; and 4) apparent "recovery" from desensitization. Review of some of the pathways that regulate insulin secretion suggest that phosphoinositol metabolism and protein kinase-C production are regulated similarly to the theoretical potentiator and their impairment is a major contributor to glucose desensitization in the beta cell. 相似文献

Summary We propose a Bayesian chi‐squared model diagnostic for analysis of data subject to censoring. The test statistic has the form of Pearson's chi‐squared test statistic and is easy to calculate from standard output of Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. The key innovation of this diagnostic is that it is based only on observed failure times. Because it does not rely on the imputation of failure times for observations that have been censored, we show that under heavy censoring it can have higher power for detecting model departures than a comparable test based on the complete data. In a simulation study, we show that tests based on this diagnostic exhibit comparable power and better nominal Type I error rates than a commonly used alternative test proposed by Akritas (1988, Journal of the American Statistical Association 83, 222–230). An important advantage of the proposed diagnostic is that it can be applied to a broad class of censored data models, including generalized linear models and other models with nonidentically distributed and nonadditive error structures. Amphibians and reptiles are sensitive to changes in the thermal environment, which varies considerably in human-modified landscapes. Although it is known that thermal traits of species influence their distribution in modified landscapes, how herpetofauna respond specifically to shifts in ambient temperature along forest edges remains unclear. This may be because most studies focus on local-scale metrics of edge exposure, which only account for a single edge or habitat patch. We predicted that accounting for the combined effect of multiple habitat edges in a landscape would best explain herpetofaunal response to thermally mediated edge effects. We (1) surveyed herpetofauna at two lowland, fragmented forest sites in central Colombia, (2) measured the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of the species sampled, (3) measured their edge exposure at both local and landscape scales, and (4) created a thermal profile of the landscape itself. We found that species with low CTmax occurred both further from forest edges and in areas of denser vegetation, but were unaffected by the landscape-scale configuration of habitat edges. Variation in the thermal landscape was driven primarily by changes in vegetation density. Our results suggest that amphibians and reptiles with low CTmax are limited by both canopy gaps and proximity to edge, making them especially vulnerable to human modification of tropical forest. 研究人参茎叶皂甙(GSL)对高胆固醇饮食大鼠心肌再灌注性心律失常(RPA_r)和脂质过氧化的影响。方法:将胆固醇乳剂用灌胃法饲养大鼠14d,建立高脂血症模型,各组大鼠进行心肌缺血再灌注实验,观察高脂血症和GSL对大鼠心肌缺血再灌注2h后血丙二醇(MDA),超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)和一氧化氮(NO)水平的影响和对再灌注性心律失常发生率的影响。结果显示:(1)用胆固醇乳剂饲养大鼠14d,成功建立高脂血症模型。同时给予GSL14d有明显降脂作用。(2)高脂血症状态下,心肌缺血再灌注2h后,血MDA升高(p<0.01),SOD降低(p<0.01)和NO(p<0.05)降低,再灌注10min内RPAr的发生率增高。(3)GSL组再灌注后2h的血MDA降低,而SOD和NO水平显著升高;使RPAr发生率大为降低,无VF发生。实验显示高脂血症加重心肌缺血再灌注损伤和提高RPAr发生率及动物死亡率,GSL可减少高脂饮食大鼠脂质过氧化和诱导体内NO生成而减轻缺血再灌注心肌损伤,降低缺血再灌注性心律失常发生率。 相似文献

In this study, a simple and rapid methodology based on the hot-plate digestion method using dilute nitric acid solution was used to extract trace metals (such as As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Fe, and Zn) from freshwater sediments. The concentrations of the elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The factors (temperature, nitric acid concentration, and volume) affecting the digestion method were optimized using one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) or univariate methodology, and the optimization process was carried out using freshwater sediment certified reference material (CRM015). The optimal conditions for temperature, nitric acid concentration, and time in the method were 180°C, 10 mL of 5 mol L?1 HNO3, and 45 min, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) ranged between 0.02 and 0.08 µg L?1 and the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.07 and 0.27 µg L?1. In addition, the method detection limits (MDLs) and method quantification limits (MQLs) were 0.10–0.17 and 0.30?0.57 µg g?1, respectively. The overall accuracy of the method determined by recovery of the trace elements in the CRMs ranged from 98 to 111% with the precision ranging from 1.4 to 5.8%. Caldesmon (CaD) is an actin-binding protein that is capable of inhibiting the actomyosin ATPase activity in vitro. CaD has a single gene that is alternatively spliced to generate the smooth muscle-specific form, h-CaD, and a shorter isoform, l-CaD, that is present only in non-muscle cells. The difference between h- and l-CaD is a highly charged repeating sequence, corresponding to a 35 nm-long single helical region that separates the N-terminal domain from the C-terminal domain of h-CaD. To test whether such an elongated h-CaD is essential for smooth muscles to function properly, we have specifically abrogated its expression in the mouse by targeting h-CaD without affecting the expression of l-CaD. After genotyping, we have obtained homozygous knockout mice that indeed lack h-CaD, but nevertheless express varying amounts of l-CaD in a tissue-dependent fashion. Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron represents a major symbiont of the human gut microbiome that is increasingly viewed as a promising candidate strain for microbial therapeutics. Here, we engineer B. thetaiotaomicron for heterologous production of non-native butyrate as a proof-of-concept biochemical at therapeutically relevant concentrations. Since B. thetaiotaomicron is not a natural producer of butyrate, we heterologously expressed a butyrate biosynthetic pathway in the strain, which led to the production of butyrate at the final concentration of 12 mg/L in a rich medium. Further optimization of butyrate production was achieved by a round of metabolic engineering guided by an expanded genome-scale metabolic model (GEM) of B. thetaiotaomicron. The in silico knock-out simulation of the expanded model showed that pta and ldhD were the potent knock-out targets to enhance butyrate production. The maximum titer and specific productivity of butyrate in the pta-ldhD double knockout mutant increased by nearly 3.4 and 4.8 folds, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first engineering attempt that enabled butyrate production from a non-butyrate producing commensal B. thetaiotaomicron. The study also highlights that B. thetaiotaomicron can serve as an effective strain for live microbial therapeutics in human. 相似文献

When divergent populations form hybrids, hybrid fitness can vary with genome composition, current environmental conditions, and the divergence history of the populations. We develop analytical predictions for hybrid fitness, which incorporate all three factors. The predictions are based on Fisher's geometric model, and apply to a wide range of population genetic parameter regimes and divergence conditions, including allopatry and parapatry, local adaptation, and drift. Results show that hybrid fitness can be decomposed into intrinsic effects of admixture and heterozygosity, and extrinsic effects of the (local) adaptedness of the parental lines. Effect sizes are determined by a handful of geometric distances, which have a simple biological interpretation. These distances also reflect the mode and amount of divergence, such that there is convergence toward a characteristic pattern of intrinsic isolation. We next connect our results to the quantitative genetics of line crosses in variable or patchy environments. This means that the geometrical distances can be estimated from cross data, and provides a simple interpretation of the “composite effects.” Finally, we develop extensions to the model, involving selectively induced disequilibria, and variable phenotypic dominance. The geometry of fitness landscapes provides a unifying framework for understanding speciation, and wider patterns of hybrid fitness. 相似文献
