Village Drift and Riverine Settlement: Modeling Akimel O'odham Land Use

Regular unscheduled movements of rancherías within a confined area or settlement district result in the phenomenon described as "village drift," a process whereby a settlement may change its location gradually by several kilometers over a period of years. This article presents a model of village drift based on data acquired from recent archaeological and geomorphological field studies and archival research on the Akimel O'odham, the Gila River Pima of south-central Arizona. The model provides an excellent example of human ecodynamics---an emerging landscape perspective that emphasizes the coevolution of humans and their ecosystem---with implications for understanding prehistoric and historic settlement in desert riverine environments.     

A Rich and Highly Endemic Decapod Crustacean Fauna from the Middle Jurassic of North-east France

Decapod crustaceans are relatively widespread in Jurassic deposits of Europe and a small number have been collected from the north-east of France. A new fossil of a macrurous decapod assigned to Eryma burgundiaca sp. nov., an erymid lobster, is described from this area and comparisons are made with closely allied species from Europe. Probable pagurid anomurous decapods are represented by Orhomalus magnificus sp. nov., Palaeopagurus acutus sp. nov. and Palaeopagurus neraudeaui sp. nov. No brachyurous decapods are presently known from the fauna. Based on the associated ammonites, the material is considered to be Callovian in age.     

Effect of differential gastric evacuation and multispecies prey items on estimates of daily energy intake in juvenile chinook salmon

Synopsis The caloric density of stomach contents in juvenile chinook salmon,Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, was not affected by gastric evacuation, suggesting a constant caloric density of stomach contents during evacuation. Differences in the caloric density of prey consumed did affect caloric density of stomach contents over a 24-h period. Consumption of the amphipodCorophium sp. was associated with reduced caloric densities of stomach contents. During periods whenCorophium contributed more than 4% of the stomach contents, average caloric density declined from 5.56 to 5.33 kcal g^–1. Despite this difference, estimates of daily energy intake of juvenile chinook salmon were only 3%, greater when developed from the mean caloric density of stomach contents excludingCorophium.

Uptake of Lucifer Yellow CH into plant-cell protoplasts: a quantitative assessment of fluid-phase endocytosis

The highly fluorescent dye Lucifer Yellow CH (LYCH), now in common use in microinjection studies, has been shown to enter the vacuole of a range of plant-cell protoplasts from the external medium. Uptake was quantified by lysing the protoplasts following incubation and determining the amount of LYCH incorporated by spectrofluorimetry. Uptake was biphasic with respect to both time and substrate concentration, enhanced at low pH and inhibited by low temperature and metabolic inhibitors. The kinetics of uptake showed several similarities with those reported for the fluid-phase endocytosis of LYCH in animal cells and yeast cells. A calculated membrane permeability coefficient for LYCH, based on the observed rates of uptake, was too high to be consistent with simple diffusion of the undissociated form of the molecule and inconsistent with the membrane-impermeant properties of the dye. Taxonomic status of the hominid mandible KNM-ER TI 13150 from the middle pliocene of tabarin,in Kenya

A partial mandible with two molars intact was recovered between 1981 and 1984 from deposits of the Middle Pliocene at Tabarin, in Kenya. It has been described and assigned toAustralopithecus cf.afarensis Johanson, White, andCoppens, 1978, with the condition that if ‘A. afarensis’ is revised, then the attribution may change. The taxon ‘A. afarensis’ was found to be invalid and was revised. The smaller specimens of ‘A. afarensis,’ to which the Tabarin mandible was said to be similar, were redescribed asHomo antiquus Ferguson, 1984. Since the Tabarin mandible andH. antiquus are successive transients of the same gens and are allopatric, the Tabarin hominid population is described as an earlier chronosubspecies,Homo antiquus praegens ssp. n.     

Summer bacterial populations in Mississippi River Pool 19: implications for secondary production

Bacterial populations were sampled at 37 sites in Mississippi River Pool 19. Bacterial biomass was calculated from direct epifluorescent cell counts. Bacterial production was estimated by incubating cells in situ in predator-free water inside membrane chambers and the frequency of dividing cells. Bacterial biomass in the water column ranged from 0.05 to 1.13 mg C ^-1, biomass in the vegetated areas of the pool was significantly higher than that in other habitats (P < 0.05, ANOVA). Biomass in sediments (to a depth of 10 cm) ranged from 24 to 1,073 mg C m^-2, biomass in muddy sediments was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in sandy sediments. Biomass on the submersed surfaces of hydrophytes was 0.06–4.90 mg bacterial C g^-1 dry weight of plant material. The vegetated habitat (water column plus vegetation) contained approximately 45 times the concentration of bacterial carbon found in nonvegetated main channel border areas and more than 100 times the concentration in the main river channel.Bacterial production rates in the water column of a vegetated section of the pool ranged from 0.03 to 3.28 g C m ^-3 s d ^-1 ; production (m ^-3) in a vegetation bed was 5.5 times that in the adjacent nonvegetated channel border areas and approximately 50 times that in the main channel. Aquatic macrophytes and associated microorganisms may be capable of providing significant inputs of carbon to secondary consumers in the pool during the summer low flow.     

Abundance and diversity of planktonic rotifers in the Po River

Zooplankton samples from the middle reach of the Po River were collected daily from 27 July to 24 August 1988 from a station located near Viadana. Changes in the biocoenosis structure were analyzed in relation to variations in flow rate. Rotifers accounted for more than 99% of the total zooplankton (protozoans excluded) in every sample. The dominant species were Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus bennini, Brachionus budapestinensis and Epiphanes macrourus. Under scanty flow conditions, the taxocoenosis showed marked stability. An increase in flow rate acts as a disturbance factor leading to a significant decrease in both total density and dominance.     

异育淇鲫及其双亲同工酶的比较研究

Lampetra (Eudontomyzon) gracilis,a synonym of Eudontomyzon danfordi

Synopsis Evidence is presented which suggests that the nonparasitic lamprey, Lampetra (Eudontomyzon) gracilis Kux, 1965, is conspecific with the parasitic lamprey Eudontomyzon danfordi Regan, 1911. The diagnostic characters of the holotype and of the non-type material of E. gracilis are features found in E. danfordi specimens in their second and final year of adult life, thereby making the former a junior synonym of the latter.
