  • 1 A classic biogeographic pattern is the alignment of diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid races of creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) across the Chihuahuan, Sonoran and Mohave Deserts of western North America. We used statistically robust differences in guard cell size of modern plants and fossil leaves from packrat middens to map current and past distributions of these ploidy races since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).
  • 2 Glacial/early Holocene (26–10 14C kyr bp or thousands of radiocarbon years before present) populations included diploids along the lower Rio Grande of west Texas, 650 km removed from sympatric diploids and tetraploids in the lower Colorado River Basin of south‐eastern California/south‐western Arizona. Diploids migrated slowly from lower Rio Grande refugia with expansion into the northern Chihuahuan Desert sites forestalled until after ~4.0 14C kyr bp . Tetraploids expanded from the lower Colorado River Basin into the northern limits of the Sonoran Desert in central Arizona by 6.4 14C kyr bp . Hexaploids appeared by 8.5 14C kyr bp in the lower Colorado River Basin, reaching their northernmost limits (~37°N) in the Mohave Desert between 5.6 and 3.9 14C kyr bp .
  • 3 Modern diploid isolates may have resulted from both vicariant and dispersal events. In central Baja California and the lower Colorado River Basin, modern diploids probably originated from relict populations near glacial refugia. Founder events in the middle and late Holocene established diploid outposts on isolated limestone outcrops in areas of central and southern Arizona dominated by tetraploid populations.
  • 4 Geographic alignment of the three ploidy races along the modern gradient of increasingly drier and hotter summers is clearly a postglacial phenomenon, but evolution of both higher ploidy races must have happened before the Holocene. The exact timing and mechanism of polyploidy evolution in creosote bush remains a matter of conjecture.

Bryozoan and foraminiferal assemblages from a core drilled in the Kusdili (Kadiköy, Istanbul) Upper Pleistocene-Holocene sequence were studied. Assemblages are absent from the very basal and top parts but they are well represented all along the middle part of the sequence. All the species found presently live in the Mediterranean. In the area sedimentation seemingly started about 13?000 years ago in very shallow near-shore environments with the deposition of pebbly sediments rapidly evolving to mud. Near the base, the presence of erosional surface allows to recognize three successive sedimentary cycles. Bryozoan and foraminiferal assemblages found in the middle part of the sequence testify to a shallow water, estuarine or lagoonal paleo-environment, in which effects of low salinity waters, more obvious toward the top, could be related to the reestablishment of a connection between the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea through the Bosphorus, about 7000 years BP.  相似文献

A continuous pollen record covering the last 28 kyr was obtained from core C106 collected in the Bay of Salerno in the southern Tyrrhenian Basin, seven radiocarbon dates and the recognition of two tephra layers (Y3 and Pompeii Pumice) providing good chronological constraints. The clear climatic signal given by the pollen spectra integrated by isotopic data, combined with comparisons with other Mediterranean sites, allowed the Last Glacial, Late Glacial and Holocene periods to be distinguished in the core. In particular, the Last Glacial period is characterised by large quantities of herbaceous and steppe elements such as Artemisia. The beginning of the Late Glacial has been correlated with the first increase of deciduous Quercus and the reduction of steppe and herbaceous elements. The Younger Dryas event is recorded only by oxygen isotopes while the vegetation does not seem to change, as in other Mediterranean sites. The Holocene corresponds to rich deciduous and evergreen forests. The first features which could be interpreted as signs of human presence are represented by a few grains of Juglans, Castanea and cereal-type while intensive olive cultivation and deforestation seem to fall within the Middle Ages. The pollen and charcoal record of a 1,500-cm-long lake sediment core from Lagoa Nova allows a reconstruction of vegetation, climate and fire history in the Atlantic lowland of southeastern Brazil. Today the potential vegetation of the study region would be dense and tall semi-deciduous forest, related to a dry season of 4 months and 1,250 mm precipitation per year. The lowermost core section of Lagoa Nova is probably of late Glacial age and contains only few, poorly preserved pollen grains, indicating dry environmental conditions. Pollen preservation was good above 1,005-cm core depth. Extrapolating from four radiocarbon dates, this interval represents about the last 10,000 years. During the early Holocene (until about 8,500 b.p.), the landscape was dominated by savanna of the campo cerrado type (open shrub woodland), with frequent trees of Curatella americana and small areas of gallery forests along the drainage system. Savanna fires, probably natural, were frequent at that time. The palaeovegetation pattern is consistent with a long dry season of about 6 months and annual precipitation lower than today. Then, up to about 7,560 b.p., gallery forests expanded in the valleys, reflecting a shorter dry season of about 5 months and somewhat higher annual rainfall. Fire was less frequent during this wetter period. Between about 7,560 and 6,060 b.p., savanna expanded and gallery forests retreated, indicating a return to drier climatic conditions of probably between 5 and 6 months dry season and lower precipitation. Fire was again frequent, but not as frequent as during the early Holocene. During the mid to late Holocene period between about 6,060 and 2,180 b.p., the valleys were covered by semi-deciduous forest, but on the hills cerrado vegetation continued to grow. The dry season was probably around 5 months and rainfall was higher than in the preceding period. During the following period between about 2,810 and 600 b.p., the open cerrado on the hills changed to closed cerrado, reflecting wetter conditions with a shorter dry season than in the previous period. It was only after about 600 b.p. that dense semi-deciduous forests expanded throughout the study region, indicating the start of modern, wet climatic conditions with an annual dry season of about 4 months. Fire was nearly absent during this period. The reconstructed palaeoenvironment from the Lagoa Nova record is similar to that of Lago do Pires, indicating that changes in past vegetation, climate and fire frequency are regionally consistent in southeastern Brazil.  相似文献

The use of Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae has been recorded in a rock shelter site that shows evidence of human occupation from 40,000 B.P. more or less continuously to the present. The plant remains are discussed in the light of ethnographic information for use of these taxa in both Australia and north America. The presence of cheno-ams as environmental indicators of aridity will be discussed.  相似文献

Dinoflagellate cysts, pollen and charred cuticle fragments from two sediment cores (giant piston Calypso core MD03-2708 and giant gravity Casq core MD03-2708CQ) collected off the Ogooué River mouth, Gabon (01°10.33′S-08°19.01′E, 920 m water depth) have been analysed to identify the direction and timing of marine-terrestrial environmental changes over western equatorial Africa during the last 26,000 yr. Changes in the proxy records indicate that both terrestrial and oceanic domains off Gabon were impacted synchronously by significant climate changes during the last glacial-interglacial transition and Holocene. Leading into, and during, the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), heterotrophic dinoflagellate cysts and Ca X-ray fluorescence intensity suggest nutrient enrichment off the river mouth, while pollen records indicate expansions of open forest, savannah woodland, and the Afromontane forest in the catchment area. From the deglaciation to mid-Holocene, however, a marked decrease in Brigantedinium spp. as well as in Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Podocarpus pollen reflects a reduction in nutrient supply to the coastal ocean in parallel with a reduction in grassland, herbaceous communities and Afromontane forest within the catchment. A sharp decline or even disappearance of heterotrophic species during this period is almost contemporaneous with an appearance of Operculodinium aguinawense, reflecting enhanced river influence in the study area. A marked increase of Rhizophora (mangrove) pollen during this transition also indicates eustatic sea-level rise after the LGM which forced a major expansion of the mangrove ecosystem across the gradually submerging shelf. The combination during the late Holocene of a reoccurrence of heterotrophic dinoflagellate cysts with increased Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Podocarpus pollen indicates enhanced nutrient supply to the ocean concordant with a shift to cooler/drier conditions over the Gabon basin. This appears to be linked to a deterioration of the monsoon system induced by the low sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean in association with decreased summer insolation.  相似文献

A 4 m long core taken from the freshwater Blue Lake crater near the township of Mount Gambier in southeastern South Australia provided a high-resolution palaeoclimatic record for the last six millennia. Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon (14C) dates were obtained from organic plant fibres and biogenic carbonates from the laminated sequence of the core and from a modern water sample. Large discrepancies between the radiocarbon ages determined from plant fibres and biogenic carbonates indicate the presence of a time-variable lacustrine reservoir, which is consistent with what is known of the lake's hydrology.Ostracod assemblages, associated with stable isotope (δ13C, δ18O) analyses and, in combination with Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Na/Ca analyses done on ostracod valves, infer salinity, temperature and water level changes in Blue Lake over the last 6 millenia. The influence of local aquifers through time has also been determined from the Na/Ca of ostracod valves. Approximately 900 year cycles are evident in the δ13C record from 5.4 ka to 1.8 ka.The history of Blue Lake records an initial period of high hydrological variability around 6 ka, becoming increasingly deeper as groundwater flowed into the basin. By 4 ka, the lake had reached steady state with the lake level fluctuating by as much as 9 m, although significant geochemical variations represent temperature fluctuations until European settlement near the lake in 1839.  相似文献

The islands of Torres Strait occupy a shallow area of submerged continental shelf narrowly separating Cape York Peninsula, Australia, from New Guinea. The human history of Torres Strait is unique with respect to mainland northern Australia. Island vegetation, however, exhibits a strong affinity with the environments of the western lowlands regions of Cape York Peninsula and with the vegetation of seasonal tropical Australia in general. Cape York Peninsula is both climatically and biologically diverse, yet few pollen studies have been carried out in its seasonally tropical environments. A summary presentation of palynological results, tracing the nature of vegetation change in Torres Strait, offers a possible framework for vegetation changes in similar environments on mainland Australia and also provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between Quaternary change in humid-tropical Australian environments and their seasonal-tropical counterparts.Six pollen records from Torres Strait provide evidence of vegetation change and fire history over approximately the last 8000 years. Near-shore sediments reveal a Holocene succession in vegetation incorporating lower-tidal mangrove, upper-tidal mangrove, saltmarsh and freshwater swamp communities. Extensive stable mangrove communities dominated coastal Torres Strait between approximately 6000 and 3000 radiocarbon years before present (yr BP). Inland, the strongest Myrtaceae-forest and rainforest representation occurs around the mid-Holocene only to be replaced by open sclerophyll woodlands, as tree density and diversity decline in the last 3000 years. The development of continuous island freshwater swamp conditions, at the coast and inland, is similarly restricted to the late Holocene (c. 2600 yr BP) and fire, as a prominent feature in the Torres Strait environment, is also a relatively recent phenomenon. Comparisons with regional mainland Australian palynological records reveal a degree of consistency in results from Torres Strait suggesting a similarity in late Quaternary trends through Australian humid and seasonally tropical environments. A number of differences, however, are also apparent, highlighting a degree of diversity which warrants further attention.  相似文献

We develop a nonparametric imputation technique to test for the treatment effects in a nonparametric two-factor mixed model with incomplete data. Within each block, an arbitrary covariance structure of the repeated measurements is assumed without the explicit parametrization of the joint multivariate distribution. The number of repeated measurements is uniformly bounded whereas the number of blocks tends to infinity. The essential idea of the nonparametric imputation is to replace the unknown indicator functions of pairwise comparisons by the corresponding empirical distribution functions. The proposed nonparametric imputation method holds valid under the missing completely at random (MCAR) mechanism. We apply the nonparametric imputation on Brunner and Dette's method for the nonparametric two-factor mixed model and this extension results in a weighted partial rank transform statistic. Asymptotic relative efficiency of the nonparametric imputation method with the complete data versus the incomplete data is derived to quantify the efficiency loss due to the missing data. Monte Carlo simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the validity and power of the proposed method in comparison with other existing methods. A migraine severity score data set is analyzed to demonstrate the application of the proposed method in the analysis of missing data.  相似文献
