Superior humeral head translation and scapula reorientation can reduce the subacromial space. While these kinematic abnormalities exist in injured populations, the effect of muscle fatigue is unclear. Additionally, these mechanisms were typically studied independently, thereby neglecting potential covariance. This research evaluated the influence of upper extremity muscle fatigue on glenohumeral and scapulothoracic kinematics and defined their relationship. Radiography and motion tracking systems captured these kinematic relationships, during scapula plane elevation, both before and after fatigue. Fatigue-induced changes in humeral head position, scapular orientation and the minimum subacromial space width were measured. High inter-subject variability existed for each measure which precluded identification of mean differences at the population level. However, significant scapular upward rotation occurred following fatigue (p = 0.0002). Despite similar population mean results, between 39% and 57% of participants exhibited fatigue-related changes in disadvantageous orientations. Additionally, correlations between measures were generally fair (0.21–0.40) and highly dependent on elevation, likely attributed to the variable fatigue responses. Overall, the data confirms that fatigue-induced changes in kinematics poses highly variable risk of subacromial impingement syndrome across individuals. Thus, solely considering the “average” or mean population response likely underestimates potentially injurious fatigue consequences. 相似文献

Two types of all‐small‐molecule ternary solar cells consisting of two small‐molecule donors and one acceptor (fullerene/non‐fullerene) are developed. Interestingly, both these devices have a common component: a carefully designed medium bandgap small molecule, which possesses appropriate energy levels and displays good compatibility with the host donor. In the fullerene system, the charge‐relaying role of the additive donor is confirmed by the improved charge transportation and suppressed charge recombination. While in the non‐fullerene system, the mixed face‐on and edge‐on orientation of the ternary film induced by the additive donor dominates the promotion of charge transportation. Accordingly, both ternary devices deliver higher short‐circuit current density, fill factor, and power conversion efficiencies of over 10% compared to binary ones. This work offers a promising guideline on the construction of high‐performance all‐small‐molecule ternary solar cells by incorporating a miscible small‐molecule donor. 相似文献

Therapeutic ultrasound was administered to patients suffering from bone fracture with FDA approval. Bone and cartilage are piezoelectric materials. To investigate the effects of piezoelectricity on the cells of chondrogenic lineage, we applied ultrasound stimulation on an AT-cut quartz coverslip to generate electric field fluctuations. The bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSC) and primary chondrocytes were cultured on either glass or quartz coverslips for ultrasound stimulation. The cells were immunofluorescent-labeled for the assessment of cell arrangement and ciliary orientation. Ultrasound and piezoelectricity both stimulate cell migration and disrupt ciliary orientation induced by directional migration. In particular, piezoelectric effects on cell rearrangement can be abolished by the inhibitor specifically targeting atypical Protein kinase C zeta (PKCζ). Our findings shed light on the possibility of cellular modulation by using piezoelectric manipulation. 相似文献

In this study, we estimate the influence exerted by the wall of the Open Field on the trajectory of the mouse. The wall exerts two types of influence on the mouse's path: one of guidance and one of attraction. The guiding influence is expressed by the tendency of mice to progress in parallel to the wall. This tendency wanes with increasing distance from the wall but is observed at large distances from it. The more parallel the mouse is to the wall the higher is its speed, even when distant from the wall. This association between heading direction and speed shows that the mouse controls its heading in reference to the wall. It is also observed in some blind strains, revealing that wall-guidance is not based exclusively on vision. The attraction influence is reflected by movement along the wall and by the asymmetry between speed during movement toward, and during movement away from the wall: sighted mice move faster toward the wall, whereas blind mice use similar speeds in both directions. Measures characterizing these influences are presented for five inbred strains, revealing heritable components that are replicable across laboratories. The revealed structure can lead to the identification of distinct groups of genes that mediate the distinct influences of guidance and attraction exerted by the wall. It can also serve as a framework for the decoding of electrophysiological data recorded in free moving rodents in the Open Field. 相似文献

Obligate avian brood parasites lay stronger eggs than their hosts or non‐parasitic relatives because they are rounder and have a thicker eggshell. Additionally, some other characteristics of the brood parasitic eggshells related to their microstructure such as size and orientation of calcite crystal units could also contribute to generating even stronger shells. An eggshell microstructure formed by small randomly oriented calcite crystal units can increase the robustness of the eggshells of birds. Here, the eggshell microstructure of avian brood parasites as well as their hosts have been characterized in detail, using X‐ray diffraction analyses to estimate the size and degree of orientation of calcite crystal units making the eggshell. Specifically, the brood parasitic great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius and two hosts (jackdaws Corvus monedula and magpie Pica pica) and one non‐host species (the pigeon, Columba livia domestica) were considered. Calcite crystal of the eggshell of the brood parasitic species was smaller and more randomly oriented than those of the eggshells of non‐parasitic species, which suggest that eggshell microstructure would contribute to explain why parasitic eggs are more resistant to breakage than those of their hosts. 相似文献

Visual cortical simple cells have been experimentally shown to reveal non-trivial spatio-temporal orientation tuning functions comprising different phases of specifically tuned enhanced and suppressed activity. A recently developed analytical method based on nonlinear neural field models suggests that such space-time responses should be approximately separable into a sum of temporally amplitude modulated Gaussian spatial components. In the present work, we investigate this possibility by means of numerical fits of sums of Gaussians to response functions observed in experiments and computer simulations. Because the theory relates each single component to a particular connectivity kernel between the underlying cell classes shaping the response, the relative contribution of feedforward and cortex-intrinsical excitatory and inhibitory feedback mechanisms to single cell tuning can be approached and quantified in experimental data. 相似文献

To acquire more information about the identification and use of the sun and other celestial cues in the sea–land orientation of the sandhopper Talitrus saltator, we carried out releases in a confined environment during a partial solar eclipse and at sunset. The sandhoppers were unable to identify the sun (86% covered) during the eclipse nor to use other celestial compass factors of orientation. This was probably due to the low level of light intensity (close to the minimum level for orientation recorded at sunset) and to the variations in intensity and pattern of skylight polarization. 相似文献

The top, the lateral and the underside of basal branch segments of two gymnosperm species, spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and yew (Taxus baccata L.), were studied with respect to possible adaptation in structural and mechanical properties. Microtensile tests were performed on thin wet foils, which were removed from the periphery of the branches. Structural parameters such as density and the microfibril angle in the S2-layer were examined to investigate the structure-function relationships of the branch wood. The top, the lateral and the underside of both branches showed significant differences in their structural and mechanical properties. However, no significant variations were observed as a function of age and size development. The findings were discussed in view of adaptive growth strategies of trees, including biomechanical constraints of a horizontally growing branch. 相似文献

Human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP), or amylin, is a 37 amino acid hormone secreted by pancreatic beta-cells. hIAPP constitutes approximately 90% of the amyloid deposits found in type II diabetic patients. It has been shown that the central region of the peptide (hIAPP(20-29)) constitutes the nucleation site for the amyloidogenic process with F23 playing a key role in the formation of the beta-pleated structures. In addition, it has been proposed that an important stage in the cytotoxicity of hIAPP is its interaction with the beta-cell membranes. As a first step toward the characterization of the interaction of hIAPP with cell membranes, we determined conformational preferences of hIAPP(20-29) in membrane-mimicking environments. We found that upon interacting with negatively charged micelles, the dominant conformation of hIAPP(20-29) is a distorted type I beta-turn centered on residues F23 and G24, with F23, A25, and I26 forming a small hydrophobic cluster that may facilitate the interaction of this peptide with the membrane bilayer. Moreover, we were able to elucidate the topological orientation of the peptide that is absorbed on the micelle surface, with the hydrophobic cluster oriented toward the hydrocarbon region of the micelles and both N- and C-termini exposed to the solvent. 相似文献

Two forms of cytochrome b(5) have been identified, associated with the outer membrane of liver mitochondria (OM cyt b(5)) and with the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum (microsomal, Mc cyt b(5)). These proteins have very similar structures, but differ significantly in physical properties, with the OM cyt b(5) exhibiting a more negative reduction potential, higher stability, and stronger interactions with the heme. We perform molecular dynamics simulations to probe the structures and fluctuations of the two proteins in solution, to help explain the observed physical differences. We find that the structures of the two proteins, highly similar in the crystal, differ in position of a surface loop involving residues 49-51 in solution. Hydrophobic residues Ala-18, Ile-32, Leu-36, and Leu-47 tend to cluster together on the surface of rat OM cyt b(5), blocking water access to the protein interior. In bovine Mc cyt b(5), two of these positions, Ser-18 and Arg-47, are occupied by hydrophilic residues. This leads to breaking the hydrophobic cluster and allowing the protein to occupy a more open conformation. A measure of this structural transition is the opening of a cleft on the protein surface, which is 5 A wider in the OM cyt b(5) simulation compared to the Mc form. The OM protein also appears to have a more compact hydrophobic core in its beta-sheet region. These effects may be used to explain observed stability differences between the two proteins. 相似文献
