In this commentary, we discuss evidence for the phylogenetic affiliations of Tortotubus protuberans, the subject of Martin Smith's 2016 paper in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society entitled, ‘Cord‐forming Palaeozoic fungi in terrestrial assemblages’. We agree that the fossilized, branching, somatic filaments probably represent fungal hyphae. We were not convinced by Smith's proposal that T. protuberans represents Dikarya, the clade of fungi that includes most modern moulds, yeasts and mushrooms. To justify classification, Smith relied on structures that are analogous between Tprotuberans and modern fungi, and argued ‘that Dikarya can produce the range of morphologies expressed by Tprotuberans’. We review available information about homologies of the characteristics of Tprotuberans, including mycelial cords, retrograde growth, septal pores and ornamented hyphae. Retrograde growth in T. protuberans is intriguing from an evolutionary developmental point of view, but it differs sufficiently in fine detail when compared with growth patterns in croziers or clamp connections of Dikarya, so that homologies are unclear. Tortotubus protuberans is an important fossil form, but we suggest taking a step back and relating it to the distribution of character evolution through the fungal phylogeny rather than to derived characters of modern taxa.  相似文献

Geometric and traditional morphometric approaches are tested to describe and reveal taxonomic characters and character states in variation of shape and size of idiosoma morphology in the Arrenuridae. Patterns of variation of idiosoma and glandularia features of males from 11 Mexican species of Arrenurus (Megaluracarus) and two species of subgenus Dadayella were explored with five landmark configurations and three sets of interlandmark distances. Separate principal component analyses (PCA) and canonical variate analyses (CVA) were performed for each data set. The eight multivariate analyses of variance among 13 a priori groups (species) detected significantly different morphometric variants, which were interpreted as different taxonomic character states. Patterns of character state similarity among species were examined with unweighted‐pair grouping method using averages (UPGMA) cluster analyses on Mahalanobis distances. Analyses of five landmark configurations revealed important taxonomical variation in the anterior idiosoma outline (10 character states), the outline of the posterior region or cauda (13 states), the distribution of postocularia, and the second and third pairs of dorsoglandularia (nine states), the fourth pair of dorsoglandularia (three states), and ventroglandularia on the posterior side of idiosoma (nine character states). Multivariate analyses of three sets of distance measurements also resulted in the detection of potential taxonomic characters related to idiosoma size (12 character states), postocularia and dorsoglandularia (13 states), and ventroglandularia (nine character states). Morphometric analyses of distances and shapes provide a formal basis for the interpretation of taxonomic characters, and for the discovery of character states. These characters should be investigated further in a wider sample of species for the phylogenetic systematics of these water mites. In the meantime, idiosoma regions and structures were tested for congruence in a phylogenetic analysis, and were proposed as homologous among the species sampled.  相似文献

为探讨燕麦属颖果微形态特征的分类学意义,采用体视显微镜和扫描电子显微镜观察燕麦属27种颖果的微形态特征,结合分子系统发育证据分析其分类学意义。燕麦属颖果有纺锤形、倒披针形、椭圆形3种形状,条纹、棱纹、网纹3种纹饰。燕麦属颖果形状、纹饰和花柱基宿存模式具有有限的属下分类学意义,颖果大小和表面大毛密度具有种间鉴定价值,而颖果腹面形态、压扁方式、胚比不具有种间鉴定价值。大穗燕麦(Avena macrostachya Balansa ex Coss.Durieu)颖果纺锤形,条纹纹饰,隶属于燕麦属颖果微形态特征的变异范围。大粒裸燕麦(A.nuda L.)与普通栽培燕麦(A.sativa L.)颖果大小、形状及纹饰特征的差异支持将大粒裸燕麦作为独立种处理。燕麦属颖果大小、表面大毛密度、胚比变异幅度大,推测与分布区广幅的气候变异相适应,凹腹面颖果体积相对缩减,有利于颖果快速发育、成熟,推测与燕麦属植物在温带、寒带分布区适生期较短相适应。  相似文献

Bayesian estimates of divergence times based on the molecular clock yield uncertainty of parameter estimates measured by the width of posterior distributions of node ages. For the relaxed molecular clock, previous works have reported that some of the uncertainty inherent to the variation of rates among lineages may be reduced by partitioning data. Here we test this effect for the purely morphological clock, using placental mammals as a case study. We applied the uncorrelated lognormal relaxed clock to morphological data of 40 extant mammalian taxa and 4,533 characters, taken from the largest published matrix of discrete phenotypic characters. The morphologically derived timescale was compared to divergence times inferred from molecular and combined data. We show that partitioning data into anatomical units significantly reduced the uncertainty of divergence time estimates for morphological data. For the first time, we demonstrate that ascertainment bias has an impact on the precision of morphological clock estimates. While analyses including molecular data suggested most divergences between placental orders occurred near the K‐Pg boundary, the partitioned morphological clock recovered older interordinal splits and some younger intraordinal ones, including significantly later dates for the radiation of bats and rodents, which accord to the short‐fuse hypothesis.  相似文献

Behavioral barriers to gene flow often evolve faster than intrinsic incompatibilities and can eliminate the opportunity for hybridization between interfertile species. While acoustic signal divergence is a common driver of premating isolation in birds and insects, its contribution to speciation in mammals is less studied. Here we characterize the incidence of, and potential barriers to, hybridization among three closely related species of grasshopper mice (genus Onychomys). All three species use long‐distance acoustic signals to attract and localize mates; Onychomys arenicola and Onychomys torridus are acoustically similar and morphologically cryptic whereas Onychomys leucogaster is larger and acoustically distinct. We used genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) to test for evidence of introgression in 227 mice from allopatric and sympatric localities in the western United States and northern Mexico. We conducted laboratory mating trials for all species pairs to assess reproductive compatibility, and recorded vocalizations from O. arenicola and O. torridus in sympatry and allopatry to test for evidence of acoustic character displacement. Hybridization was rare in nature and, contrary to prior evidence for O. torridus/O. arenicola hybrids, only involved O. leucogaster and O. arenicola. In contrast, laboratory crosses between O. torridus and O. arenicola produced litters whereas O. leucogaster and O. arenicola crosses did not. Call fundamental frequency in O. torridus and O. arenicola was indistinguishable in allopatry but significantly differentiated in sympatry, a pattern consistent with reproductive character displacement. These results suggest that assortative mating based on a long‐distance signal is an important isolating mechanism between O. torridus and O. arenicola and highlight the importance of behavioral barriers in determining the permeability of species boundaries.  相似文献

Larvae of the cosmopolitan family Limacodidae, commonly known as “slug” caterpillars, are well known because of the widespread occurrence of spines with urticating properties, a morpho‐chemical adaptive trait that has been demonstrated to protect the larvae from natural enemies. However, while most species are armed with rows of spines (“nettle” caterpillars), slug caterpillars are morphologically diverse with some species lacking spines and thus are nonstinging. It has been demonstrated that the evolution of spines in slug caterpillars may have a single origin and that this trait is possibly derived from nonstinging slug caterpillars, but these conclusions were based on limited sampling of mainly New World taxa; thus, the evolution of spines and other traits within the family remains unresolved. Here, we analyze morphological variation in slug caterpillars within an evolutionary framework to determine character evolution of spines with samples from Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. The phylogeny of the Limacodidae was reconstructed based on a multigene dataset comprising five molecular markers (5.6 Kbp: COI, 28S, 18S, EF‐1α, and wingless) representing 45 species from 40 genera and eight outgroups. Based on this phylogeny, we infer that limacodids evolved from a common ancestor in which the larval type possessed spines, and then slug caterpillars without spines evolved independently multiple times in different continents. While larvae with spines are well adapted to avoiding generalist predators, our results imply that larvae without spines may be suited to different ecological niches. Systematic relationships of our dataset indicate six major lineages, several of which have not previously been identified.  相似文献

By sharing geographic space, species are forced to interact with one another and the contribution of this process to evolutionary and ecological patterns of individual species is not fully understood. At the same time, species turnover makes that species composition varies from one area to another, so the analysis of biological interaction cannot be uncoupled from the spatial context. This is particularly important for clades that show high degree of specialization such as hummingbirds, where any variation in biotic pressures might lead to changes in morphology. Here, we describe the influence of biological interactions on the morphology of Hylocharis leucotis by simultaneously considering potential competition and diet resources. We characterized the extent of local potential competition and local available floral resources by correlating two measurements of hummingbird diversity, floral resources and the size of morphological space of H. leucotis along its geographic distribution. We found that H. leucotis shows an important morphological variability across its range and two groups can be recognized. Surprisingly, morphological variation is not always linked to local hummingbird richness or the phylogenetic similarity of. Only in the southern part of its distribution, H. leucotis is morphologically more variable in those communities where it coexist with closely related hummingbird species. We also found that morphological variation in H. leucotis is independent from the availability of floral resources. Our results suggest that abiotic factors might be responsible for morphological differences across populations in Hylocharis leucotis being biological interactions of minor importance.  相似文献

分析不同升温时间对乌天麻(Gastrodia elata f.glauca)、红天麻(Gastrodia elata f.elata)箭麻生长习性、花期同步及杂交种子发育影响,为早期获得高质量天麻杂交种子材料,促进天麻杂交种高效育苗提供科学依据。对乌天麻和红天麻箭麻不同时间定植升温(22℃)下花茎出苗时间、始花时间、花茎高度、杂交种子质量等进行分析。结果显示,不同升温时间是影响箭麻出苗时间、始花时间的主要因素,乌天麻集中于2月中下旬出苗,红天麻升温10~15 d后陆续出苗;生态变型是影响箭麻生育期长短、花期花朵数的主要因素,乌天麻比红天麻生育期长21.47 d,对花期及蒴果采收期无较大影响,红天麻比乌天麻更易完成抽薹;不同升温时间条件下,乌天麻挂果率为87.76%,红天麻挂果率为94.53%;母本决定杂交种子质量,以红天麻为母本、乌天麻为父本所得杂交种子活性为94.32%,优于以乌天麻为母本、红天麻为父本所得杂交种子活性。因此,生产中应于1月中旬对乌天麻开始升温,待乌天麻出苗后(15 d左右)开始对红天麻升温催芽,使得乌天麻与红天麻于3月中上旬花期同步,4月初可获得优良杂交天麻种子。  相似文献

In western Panama, an unusual hybrid zone exists between white-collared manakins, Manacus candei, and golden-collared manakins, M. vitellinus. Unidirectional introgression of plumage traits from vitellinus into candei has created a region in which all definitively plumaged males have a collar that is lemon-colored. These males are nearly indistinguishable from white-collared candei genetically and morphometrically, but strongly resemble golden-collared vitellinus due to the introgression of secondary sexual plumage traits, particularly the lemon-colored collar. The introgression could be explained by sexual selection for golden-collared traits or by a series of mechanisms that do not invoke sexual selection (e.g., neutral diffusion, dominant allele). Sexual selection on male-male interactions implies behavioral differences among the plumage forms--specifically that golden- and lemon-collared males should be more aggressive than white-collared males. In contrast, the nonsexual hypotheses predict behavioral similarity between lemon- and white-collared males, based on their nearly identical genetics. We tested the sexual selection hypothesis experimentally, by presenting males with taxidermic mounts of the three forms. As response variables, we monitored vocalizations and attacks on the mounts by replicate subject males. Both golden-collared and lemon-collared males were more likely to attack than were white-collared males, as predicted under sexual selection but not by the nonsexual hypotheses. Lemon-collared males were more vocally reactive than either parental form, contrary to the prediction of the nonsexual hypotheses. Our study demonstrates that sexual selection on male-male interactions may play an important role in the dynamics of character evolution and hybrid zones.  相似文献

Classical statistical genetics models of a quantitative trait depending on an autosomal gene indicate that father-to-daughter and mother-to-son correlations should be the same. If phenotypes are not sex-dependent, father-to-son and mother-to-daughter correlations also share this common value. On the other hand, if the gene is sex-linked, then the father-to-son correlation is zero. Such models do not explain genetic variation in pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) of cattle--important because cattle with high PAP are known to develop brisket disease, pulmonary heart disease, and congestive heart failure when taken to high altitudes. Data on 966 calves at a ranch in Colorado showed positive correlation (0.2) between sire PAP and male calf PAP but slightly negative correlation (-0.01) between sire PAP and female calf PAP; the dam-to-male calf and dam-to-female calf correlations are both about 0.1. The model presented here postulates an autosomal gene with reduced penetrance (i.e., the trait may remain at a normal level even when the genotype suggests abnormality) and that, in males, the rate of penetrance is related to an abnormality in the Y chromosome and is therefore passed on from father to son. Then under plausible selective breeding assumptions, the pairwise correlation between fathers and daughters can become zero or negative. Explicit formulas are computed for the model covariances, and numerical computations indicate that plausible parameter values can be chosen for the model.  相似文献
