The relationship between the quality/quantity of male investment and the feeding behavior of females was investigated in a bruchid weevil, Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus), whose males donate nutrition via seminal fluid to females. Experiments on the effect of feeding regimes of both sexes on the mating frequency of females showed that females mated at a higher frequency if given low-quality food or poor male investment. On the other hand, the experiment that examined the effect of male investment quality on female feeding behavior showed that females receiving the high-quality investment exhibited feeding behavior less often. These results suggest that male investment and feeding behavior play the same role for B. dorsalis females. These experiments also showed that there are sex-related asymmetries in mating and feeding behaviors: females mated more often but males fed more often. Moreover, a field census suggested that only males visited non-host flowers to feed on the pollen and nectar during the non-flowering period of the host plants; females always stayed on the host plants irrespective of the flowering phenology. These results suggest that in B. dorsalis courtship role reversal and sex-specific feeding modes are fairly fixed and obligatory, and that male investment, derived from sexual selection, could affect the feeding behavior and spatial distribution of both sexes, which may have far-reaching impact in various ecological contexts.  相似文献

 为了探讨细胞周期蛋白 E(cyclin E)与人乳腺癌细胞恶性特征间的相关性 ,利用反义 RNA抑制基因表达的技术 ,构建了细胞周期蛋白 E反义 RNA的真核表达载体并转入人乳腺癌细胞中 .通过 G41 8筛选出阳性克隆 ,经 PCR和 Western印迹检测 ,确定细胞中含有重组质粒 ,并且细胞周期蛋白 E蛋白的水平明显降低 ,由此获得了反义 RNA表达载体导致的细胞周期蛋白 E表达受抑制的细胞 .细胞模型建立后 ,观察分析了细胞形态 ,细胞生长的血清依赖性以及软琼脂成集落能力 ,与对照细胞相比所发生的变化 .结果显示 ,细胞周期蛋白 E受抑制后 ,乳腺癌细胞体积变大 ,细胞生长对血清依赖性增加 ,低血清培养到第 6d时 ,细胞密度约为对照细胞的五分之一 ,细胞成集落能力也显著下降 ,软琼脂中克隆形成率下降 57% .这些变化都表明乳腺癌细胞恶性程度由于细胞周期蛋白 E表达受抑制而减弱 ,可以推测 cyclin E与乳腺癌细胞的恶性增殖及非锚定依赖性生长有着明显的关系 .  相似文献

Enzymes enhance chemical reaction rates by lowering the activation energy, the energy barrier of the reaction leading to products. This occurs because enzymes bind the high-energy intermediate of the reaction (the transition state) more strongly than the substrate. We studied details of this process by determining the substrate binding energy (DeltaG(s), calculated from K(m) values) and the activation energy (DeltaG(T), determined from k(cat)/K(m) values) for the trypsin-catalyzed hydrolysis of oligopeptides. Plots of DeltaG(T) versus DeltaG(s) for oligopeptides with 15 amino acid replacements at each of the positions P(1)', P(1), and P(2) were straight lines, as predicted by a derived equation that relates DeltaG(T) and DeltaG(s). The data led to the conclusion that the trypsin active site has subsites that bind moieties of substrate and of transition state in characteristic ratios, whichever substrate is used. This was unexpected and means that each subsite characteristically favors substrate binding or catalysis.  相似文献

E. Steemann Nielsen is remembered by most biological oceanographers and limnologists as having introduced the 14C method for measuring photosynthesis in 1952. The present paper is to recall that he was interested in the phytoplankton as part of the plankton community and was much aware of the role of grazing in affecting, if not determining, the concentrations of phytoplankton and, thus, also its rate of production. His principal statements to this effect were made with the open, oligotrophic subtropical and tropical oceans in mind where phytoplankton concentrations exhibit little seasonal change. This paper shows that Steemann Nielsen's sentiment also applies to non-static situations, especially phytoplankton blooms. Of the blooms in Cushing's North Sea Calanus patches of 1949 and 1954 and the two low-latitude, open-sea iron fertilization experiments (IronEx I, II) of the 1990s, more than half or even most of the newly formed cells were lost daily. In these examples, the same water was revisited, mixing was considered, and sinking was an unimportant loss term, so that grazing was the principal cause of mortality. Because of the grazing losses and the subsequent regeneration the CO2 draw down in the fertilized water was much lower than the 14C uptake. Moreover the examples show that over the course of the blooms, the rate and even the sign of temporal change of phytoplankton abundance had little relation to the rate of cell division, as already postulated by Riley's 1946 model of the seasonal cycle of phytoplankton on Georges Bank. Thus, in most situations in the open sea and, presumably, large lakes, the rates of cell division (instead of photosynthesis by itself) and of mortality (most often from grazing) are needed for understanding and predicting the temporal change of phytoplankton abundance, a principal goal of biological oceanography. The mechanism maintaining the actual abundance of phytoplankton in the quasi-steady state prevailing over most of the ocean much of the time is still unclear.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the contributions to natural history, particularly in methods of plant classification of the Portuguese botanist, man of letters, diplomat, and Freemason Abbé José Correia da Serra (1751–1823), placing them in their national and international political and social contexts. Correia da Serra adopted the natural method of classification championed by the Frenchman Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, and introduced refinements of his own that owe much to parallel developments in zoology. He endorsed the view that the classification of plants should be based on the establishment of affinities rather than of differences. The emphasis on affinities went hand in hand with the development of the concept of symmetry. This idea was introduced by Correia da Serra in systematics and was adopted and further developed by his friend, Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle. Correia da Serra also argued that Cryptogamia reproduce sexually, advocated extension of methods of comparative anatomy from zoology to botany, and applied them to the study of fruits. Correia da Serra was one among many of the estrangeirados, Portuguese``Europeanized' intellectuals who traveled extensively abroad in most cases to escape political or religious persecution at home. The estrangeirados were important contributors to 18th and 19th century European thinking. Most of the estrangeirados were pivotal in the introduction, dissemination and propagation of the new sciences in Portugal, but unlike most of his fellow estrangeirados, Correia da Serra was also an innovative man of science in his own right. The reproductive tract microbiota plays a crucial role in maintenance of normal pregnancy and influences reproductive outcomes. Microbe–host interactions in pregnancy remain poorly understood and their role in shaping immune modulation is still being uncovered. In this review, we describe the composition of vaginal microbial communities in the reproductive tract and their association with reproductive outcomes. We also consider strategies for manipulating microbiota composition by using live biotherapeutics, selective eradication of pathogenic bacteria with antibiotics and vaginal microbiota transplantation. Finally, future developments in this field and the need for mechanistic studies to explore the functional significance of reproductive tract microbial communities are highlighted.  相似文献

Noncanonical parallel-stranded DNA double helices (ps-DNA) of natural nucleotide sequences are usually less stable than the canonical antiparallel-stranded DNA structures, which ensures reliable cell functioning. However, recent data indicate a possible role of ps-DNA in DNA loops or in regions of trinucleotide repeats connected with neurodegenerative diseases. The review surveys recent studies on the effect of nucleotide sequence on preference of one or other type of DNA duplex. (1) Ps-DNA of mixed AT/GC composition was found to have conformational and thermodynamic properties drastically different from those of a Watson–Crick double helix. Its stability depends strongly on the specific sequence in a manner peculiar to the ps double helix, because of the energy disadvantage of the AT/GC contacts. The AT/GC boundary facilitated flipping of A and T out of the ps double helix. Proton acceptor groups of bases are exposed into both grooves of the ps-DNA and are accessible to solvent and ligands, including proteins. (2) DNA regions containing natural minor bases isoguanine and isomethylisocytosine were shown to form ps-DNA with transAT-, trans isoGC, and transiso5meCG pairs exceeding in stability a related canonical duplex. (3) Nucleotide sequence dG(GT)4G from yeast telomeres and microsatellites was demonstrated to form novel ps-DNA with GG and TT base pairing. Unlike d(GT) n - and d(G n T m ) sequences able to form quadruplexes, the dG(GT)4G sequence formed no alternative double- or multistranded structures in a wide range of experimental conditions, thus suggesting that the nucleotide context governs the observed structural polymorphism of the d(GT) n sequence. The possible biological role of ps-DNA and the prospects of its study are discussed.  相似文献

The difference in the reproductive performance of males and females of the Bull-headed Shrike (Lanius bucephalus) according to age class, i.e. yearling and adult, was studied, and the age-related difference was examined according to parental feeding behavior. The clutch initiation date was not affected by the age class. Females that paired with an adult male laid more eggs per clutch than those paired with a yearling male. The age class of males affected the mass of nestlings at 6 days old, and the age class of females affected the mass of nestlings at 12 days old. The effects of the age of either parent independently were observed at different breeding stages. A change in the degree of nestling feeding peformed by the male and female parents occurred at some point between when the broods were 6 days and 12 days old. It is likely that this caused an effect of age at different stages of the breeding cycle. The effects of the age of the male parent are consistent with accounts of age-related reproduction in raptors where males provide resources to offspring. Individual improvements in foraging skills and/or courtship feeding rate are suggested to be possible explanations. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Recently, the impact of microorganisms on tumor growth and metastasis has attracted great attention. The pathogenesis and progression of lung cancer are related to an increase in respiratory bacterial load as well as changes in the bacterial community because the microbiota affects tumors in many ways, including canceration, metastasis, angiogenesis, and treatment. The microbiota may increase tumor susceptibility by altering metabolism and immune responses, promoting inflammation, and increasing toxic effects. The microbiota can regulate tumor metastasis by altering multiple cell signaling pathways and participate in tumor angiogenesis through vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), endothelial cells (ECs), inflammatory factors and inflammatory cells. Tumor angiogenesis not only maintains tumor growth at the primary site but also promotes tumor metastasis and invasion. Therefore, angiogenesis is an important mediator of the interaction between microorganisms and tumors. The microbiota also plays a part in antitumor therapy. Alteration of the microbiota caused by antibiotics can regulate tumor growth and metastasis. Moreover, the microbiota also influences the efficacy and toxicity of tumor immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Finally, the effects of air pollution, a risk factor for lung cancer, on microorganisms and the possible role of respiratory microorganisms in the effects of air pollution on lung cancer are discussed.  相似文献
