In this work, the time varying characteristics of microalgal cultures are investigated. Microalgae are a promising source of biofuels and other valuable chemicals; a better understanding of their dynamic behavior is, however, required to facilitate process scale-up, optimization and control. Growth and oil production rates are evaluated as a function of carbon and nitrogen sources concentration. It is found that nitrogen has a major role in controlling the productivity of microalgae. Moreover, it is shown that there exists a nitrogen source concentration at which biomass and oil production can be maximized. A mathematical model that describes the effect of nitrogen and carbon source on growth and oil production is proposed. The model considers the uncoupling between nutrient uptake and growth, a characteristic of algal cells. Validity of the proposed model is tested on fed-batch cultures.  相似文献

This study investigated the optimum thermochemical liquefaction (TCL) operating conditions for producing biocrude from Spirulina platensis. TCL experiments were performed at various temperatures (200-380 °C), holding times (0-120 min), and solids concentrations (10-50%). TCL conversion at 350 °C, 60 min holding time and 20% solids concentration produced the highest biocrude yield of 39.9% representing 98.3% carbon conversion efficiency. Light fraction biocrude (B1) appeared at 300 °C or higher temperatures and represented 50-63% of the total biocrude. Biocrude obtained at 350-380 °C had similar fuel properties to that of petroleum crude with energy density of 34.7-39.9 MJ kg−1 compared to 42.9 MJ kg−1 for petroleum crude. Biocrude from conversion at 300 °C or above had 71-77% elemental carbon, and 0.6-11.6% elemental oxygen and viscosities in the range 40-68 cP. GC/MS of biocrude reported higher hydrocarbons (C16-C17), phenolics, carboxylic acids, esters, aldehydes, amines, and amides.  相似文献

Cultivation of microalgae Chlorella sp. was performed in draft-tube photobioreactors. Effect of light intensity on the microalgae growth performance was conducted under a light intensity range of 82-590 μmol/m2 s. A lumostatic strategy was proposed based on the light distribution profiles obtained by image analysis and specific chlorophyll a content. The proposed lumostatic strategy allowed a maximum biomass dry weight of 5.78 g/L and a productivity of 1.29 g/L d, which were 25.7% and 74.3% higher than that achieved by the optimal constant light intensity, respectively. A comparison with other lumostatic strategies reported in the literature indicated that the proposed lumostatic strategy in the current study can be a promising approach in improving the growth of microalgae.  相似文献

Pavlova sp. was employed to evaluate the efficiency of different lipid extraction methods. The microalgal crude lipids content determined using the mixed solvent with ultrasonic method was 44.7 wt.%. The triglyceride content obtained by the mixed solvent method was 15.6 wt.%. The extraction yield was the FAME yield divided by the maximum FAME (15.9 wt.%). The extraction yield was improved by cell disruption prior to extraction, and the highest triglyceride extraction yield of 98.7% was observed using the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method with bead-beating. The results indicate that the SFE method is effective and provides higher selectivity for triglyceride extraction though the total lipid extracted was less than that using solvent extraction.  相似文献

A simple and rapid harvesting method by in situ magnetic separation with naked Fe3O4 nanoparticles has been developed for the microalgal recovery of Botryococcus braunii and Chlorella ellipsoidea. After adding the magnetic particles to the microalgal culture broth, the microalgal cells were adsorbed and then separated by an external magnetic field. The maximal recovery efficiency reached more than 98% for both microalgae at a stirring speed of 120 r/min within 1 min, and the maximal adsorption capacity of these Fe3O4 nanoparticles reached 55.9 mg-dry biomass/mg-particles for B. braunii and 5.83 mg-dry biomass/mg-particles for C. ellipsoidea. Appropriate pH value and high nanoparticle dose were favorable to the microalgae recovery, and the adsorption mechanism between the naked Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the microalgal cells was mainly due to the electrostatic attraction. The developed in situ magnetic separation technology provides a great potential for saving time and energy associated with improving microalgal harvesting.  相似文献

Hydrothermal processing of high lipid feedstock such as microalgae is an alternative method of oil extraction which has obvious benefits for high moisture containing biomass. A range of microalgae and lipids extracted from terrestrial oil seed have been processed at 350 °C, at pressures of 150-200 bar in water. Hydrothermal liquefaction is shown to convert the triglycerides to fatty acids and alkanes in the presence of certain heterogeneous catalysts. This investigation has compared the composition of lipids and free fatty acids from solvent extraction to those from hydrothermal processing. The initial decomposition products include free fatty acids and glycerol, and the potential for de-oxygenation using heterogeneous catalysts has been investigated. The results indicate that the bio-crude yields from the liquefaction of microalgae were increased slightly with the use of heterogeneous catalysts but the higher heating value (HHV) and the level of de-oxygenation increased, by up to 10%.  相似文献

The pyrolysis of Chlorella sp. was carried out in a microwave oven with char as microwave reception enhancer. The results indicated that the maximum bio-oil yield of 28.6% was achieved under the microwave power of 750 W. The bio-oil properties were characterized with elemental, GC-MS, GPC, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analysis. The algal bio-oil had a density of 0.98 kg/L, a viscosity of 61.2 cSt, and a higher heating value (HHV) of 30.7 MJ/kg. The GC-MS results showed that the bio-oils were mainly composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, long chain fatty acids and nitrogenated compounds, among which aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (account for 22.18% of the total GC-MS spectrum area) are highly desirable compounds as those in crude oil, gasoline and diesel. The results in this study indicate that fast growing algae are a promising source of feedstock for advanced renewable fuel production via microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP).  相似文献

The potential of mixotrophic microalgae to utilize poultry litter anaerobic digester (AD) effluent (PLDE) as nutritional growth medium was evaluated. Three algal strains viz. Chlorella minutissima, Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus bijuga and their consortium showed significant biomass productivity in 6% (v/v) concentration of PLDE in deionized water. Multiple booster dosage of PLDE supported better growth relative to a single dose PLDE. The maximum biomass productivity of 76 mg L−1 d−1 was recorded. The biomass was rich in protein (39% w/w) and carbohydrates (22%) while lipids (<10%) were low, making it most suitable as an animal feed supplement. The mixotrophic algae showed sustainable growth against variations in PLDE composition in different AD batches, thus proving to be a suitable candidate for large scale wastewater treatment with concomitant production of renewable biomass feedstock for animal feed and bioenergy applications.  相似文献

We evaluated the kinetic culture characteristics of the microalgae Cyanobium sp. grown in vertical tubular photobioreactor in semicontinuous mode. Cultivation was carried out in vertical tubular photobioreactor for 2 L, in 57 d, at 30 °C, 3200 Lux, and 12 h light/dark photoperiod. The maximum specific growth rate was found as 0.127 d−1, when the culture had blend concentration of 1.0 g L−1, renewal rate of 50%, and sodium bicarbonate concentration of 1.0 g L−1. The maximum values of productivity (0.071 g L−1 d−1) and number of cycles (10) were observed in blend concentration of 1.0 g L−1, renewal rate of 30%, and bicarbonate concentration of 1.0 g L−1. The results showed the potential of semicontinuous cultivation of Cyanobium sp. in closed tubular bioreactor, combining factors such as blend concentration, renewal rate, and sodium bicarbonate concentration.  相似文献

Juvenile or adult Artemia sp. are often used as live prey for the rearing of early life stages of some crustacean, fish and cephalopod species. The improvements of both Artemia growth and its biochemical composition are key issues for the suitable use of Artemia biomass in these rearing processes. In this study we evaluated the growth and survival rates of Artemia fed with the cryptophyte Rhodomonas lens in comparison with different microalgal species commonly used in aquaculture: the prasinophyte Tetraselmis suecica, the prymnesiophyte Isochrysis galbana Parke, and the eustigmatophyte Nannochloropsis gaditana. Microalgae were cultured semi-continuously in nutrient saturated conditions and with a daily renewal rate of 30% of the volume of cultures, to obtain biomass of controlled and optimized composition. Considerable differences in Artemia growth were observed, as well as in the survival rate. At day 8 of rearing, Artemia fed R. lens had the highest length (4.9 ±0.6 mm, P < 0.001), followed by individuals fed T. suecica (4.2 ± 0.7 mm), I. galbana (3.6 ± 0.7 mm) and finally those fed N. gaditana (1.5 ± 0.2 mm). The survival rate of Artemia fed N. gaditana (18 ± 3%) was much lower (P < 0.001) than values found for the remaining groups (69 to 88%). The growth rate of Artemia obtained with R. lens was in general much higher than with other microalgal diets previously reported in the literature. The higher protein content of R. lens could explain the higher growth obtained with this species, but differences of Artemia growth with the different diets could not be explained solely on the basis of the gross composition of microalgae. Factors such as cell size and digestibility all seem to contribute to the results observed. Another trial was carried out to investigate differences in Artemia growth and on its biochemical composition when fed the best two diets: R. lens or T. suecica. The fatty acid (FA) and total amino acid (AA) composition of both microalgal species and the composition of Artemia were assessed as well. As found in the first experiment individuals fed R. lens (group ARHO) grew faster than those fed T. suecica (group ATET), attaining 3.6 ± 0.3 mm and 3.2 ± 0.4 mm (P < 0.001), respectively, after 5 days of rearing. The much higher AA content obtained in R. lens may be on the basis of the higher growth obtained with this species. Protein and carbohydrate levels in Artemia juveniles were very similar in both groups (64-68% of dry weight, and 8-10%, respectively). Lipid was slightly lower in ARHO (12%) than in ATET (15%, P < 0.01). Regarding the FA composition, juveniles from group ARHO contained higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 6.2%) than juveniles from ATET (4.1%, P < 0.01), whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was only found in juveniles from ARHO (1.1%). Taking into account that the daily productivity of R. lens culture was higher than, or at least equal, the remaining microalgal species this cryptophyte is confirmed as an excellent diet to optimize the growth of Artemia, as well as to improve its biochemical composition.  相似文献
