A study was conducted in Mona Lake, a small eutrophic lake located in western Michigan (USA) to address the temporal and spatial
variability of external and internal phosphorus loading. External P load varied among subbasins, which was mostly related
to discharge, but also to land use. Black Creek, which drains lands with natural cover and agriculture, accounted for the
majority of flow, and total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) load, to Mona Lake. However, the relative
contribution of SRP load was greater in Little Black Creek, which flows through a mostly urbanized subbasin, than in Black
Creek. The relative importance of internal loading was strongly related to season, as internal TP loads contributed only ∼9%
of the overall P load in April 2005, but ∼68–82% of the overall P load in the summer and early fall seasons. Internal TP and
SRP loading was greater under anaerobic than aerobic conditions. Mean anaerobic TP release rates ranged from 0.80 to 15.56 mg P m−2 d−1, varying with site and season. Spatial variability in both internal phosphorus loading and sediment P concentration was also
evident. By taking into account the spatial and temporal variability of different loading sources, management practices can

Background and Aims
The amount of DNA in an unreplicated haploid nuclear genome (C-value) ranges over several orders of magnitude among plant species and represents a key metric for comparing plant genomes. To extend previously published datasets on plant nuclear content and to characterize the DNA content of many species present in one region of North America, flow cytometry was used to estimate C-values of woody and herbaceous species collected in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA.Methods
A total of 674 samples and vouchers were collected from locations across Wisconsin and Michigan, USA. From these, C-value estimates were obtained for 514 species, subspecies and varieties of vascular plants. Nuclei were extracted from samples of these species in one of two buffers, stained with the fluorochrome propidium iodide, and an Accuri C-6 flow cytometer was used to measure fluorescence peaks relative to those of an internal standard. Replicate extractions, coefficients of variation and comparisons to published C-values in the same and related species were used to confirm the accuracy and reliability of our results.Key Results and Conclusions
Prime C-values for 407 taxa are provided for which no published data exist, including 390 angiosperms, two gymnosperms, ten monilophytes and five lycophytes. Non-prime reports for 107 additional taxa are also provided. The prime values represent new reports for 129 genera and five families (of 303 genera and 97 families sampled). New family C-value maxima or minima are reported for Betulaceae, Ericaceae, Ranunculaceae and Sapindaceae. Abstract: A steady increase in archery hunting participation and frequent changes in hunter regulations led to an evaluation of harvest data used in a common white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population model. Our goal was to determine if model parameters and population estimates traditionally estimated solely by firearm harvest data were biased with respect to altered sex and age ratios brought about by increases in archery hunting and harvest success. The sex-age-kill (SAK) model, commonly used by state agencies, was developed in the mid-1900s when deer numbers were low and firearm harvest was predominant. Management actions were concentrated on increasing deer numbers, and model assumptions relied heavily on a stable age distribution and a minimal antlerless deer harvest. We evaluated the reliance of SAK in a modern hunting scenario using a 10-year dataset obtained from Michigan, USA, that encompassed a variety of climatic regions, hunting seasons, and regulation scenarios. We found that firearm and archery harvest sex and age ratios differed among 5 geographic groups and study years for males, females, and fawns (P<0.001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.037, respectively). Also, the addition of archery harvest data increased population estimates but did not alter overall trends. We recommend that managers reassess harvest-based population estimates in 2 situations: 1) if regulation changes affect antlerless deer harvest, and 2) when trends in hunter success rates cause fluctuations in harvest data. 相似文献

To assess and improve existing monitoring protocols for sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we used data from 58 radio-collared grouse (46 M, 12 F) monitored within 3 openland landscape types: a xeric, conifer-dominated site, a wetland-dominated site, and a site dominated by low-intensity agriculture. We used lek counts and radio telemetry to determine lek attendance rates, factors affecting lek attendance rates, lek fidelity, and inter-sexual variation in these parameters. Our analysis indicated lek attendance varied with respect to sex of bird, day of year, time after sunrise, and wind speed. Peak male lek attendance rates exceeded those of females by up to 40%, and peak lekking activity for both males and females occurred during the second and third weeks of April. Male lekking activity occurred earlier and was sustained longer than that of females. Lekking activity was negatively related to time of day and wind speed. We observed strong lek fidelity as radio-collared birds attended a primary lek 94% of the time, indicating a low probability of multiple counting of individual birds. We also proposed a method to adjust lek count data for the probability that birds are on a lek during lek counts. Our proposed method can be used by researchers and managers to improve estimates of the number of birds attending a lek by reducing the negative bias associated with observed counts. © 2011 The Wildlife Society. 相似文献

ABSTRACT We studied movements and survival of 250 female giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) marked during incubation with either satellite-monitored platform transmitting terminals or very high frequency radiotransmitters at 27 capture areas in southern Michigan, USA, in 2000–2003. We destroyed nests of 168 radiomarked females by removing eggs after day 14 of incubation, and we left nests of 82 incubating hens undisturbed after capture and marking. Of females whose nests we experimentally destroyed, 80% subsequently migrated from breeding areas to molt remiges in Canada. Among 82 nests left undisturbed, 37 failed due to natural causes and 51% of those females departed. Migration incidence of birds that nested in urban parks was low (23%) compared with migration incidence of birds that nested in other classes of land use (87%). Departure of females from their breeding areas began during the second and third weeks of May, and most females departed during the last week of May and first week of June. Based on apparent molting locations of 227 marked geese, birds either made long-distance migratory movements >900 km, between latitudes 51° and 64° N, or they remained on breeding areas. Molting locations for 132 migratory geese indicated 4 primary destinations in Canada: Western Ungava Peninsula and offshore islands, Cape Henrietta Maria, Northeast James Bay and offshore islands, and Belcher Islands, Hudson Bay, Canada. Following molt of remiges, Canada geese began to return to their former nesting areas from 20 August through 3 September, with 37% arriving on or before 15 September and 75% arriving on or before 1 October. Migration routes of geese returning to spring breeding areas were relatively indirect compared with direct routes taken to molting sites. Although overall survival from May through November was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.74–0.88), survival of migratory geese marked on breeding sites where birds could be hunted was low (0.60; 95% CI: 0.42–0.75) compared with high survival of birds that remained resident where hunting was restricted (0.93; 95% CI: 0.84–0.97). Nest destruction can induce molt migration, increase hunting mortality of geese returning from molting areas, and reduce human-goose conflicts, but managers also should consider potential impacts of increasing numbers of molt migrants on populations of subarctic nesting Canada geese. 相似文献

Syntheses are described of 6-aminohexyl and 2-aminoethyl glycopyranosides of the monosaccharides commonly found in glycoproteins and glycolipids. The ligands have been coupled to agarose, and the adsorbents so formed have been used in the isolation of the lectin from wheat-germ extracts. Various procedures for the formation of glycopyranosides from 14C-labelled per-O-acetylglycosyl halides and 6-(trifluoroacetamido)hexanol have been examined. Silver carbonate with a trace of iodine is the best catalyst found thus far for glycosidation of simple sugars, and mercuric cyanide for that of 2-acetamido-2-deoxyaldoses. With other catalysts, higher proportions of ortho esters are obtained. The rearrangement of an ortho ester by p-toluenesulfonic acid gives the glycoside, a partially deacetylated glycoside, and a substantial proportion of the aglycon acetate. A simple procedure for isolation of the deacetylated glycosides by use of chromatography on Dowex-50 (pyridinium form) is described. 相似文献

Cylic electron flow (CEF) around Photosystem I in photosynthetic eukaryotes is likely to be necessary to augment ATP production, rapidly- and precisely balancing the plastid ATP/NADPH energy budget to meet the demands of downstream metabolism. Many regulatory aspects of this process are unclear. Here we demonstrate that the higher plant plastid NADH/Fd:plastoquinone reductase (NDH) and proposed PGR5/PGRL1 ferredoxin:plastoquinone reductase (FQR) pathways of CEF are strongly, rapidly and reversibly inhibited in vitro by ATP with Ki values of 670 μM and 240 μM respectively, within the range of physiological changes in ATP concentrations. Control experiments ruled out effects on secondary reactions, e.g. FNR- and cytochrome b6f activity, nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence etc., supporting the view that ATP is an inhibitor of CEF and its associated pmf generation and subsequent ATP production. The effects are specific to ATP, with the ATP analog AMP-PNP showing little inhibitory effect, and ADP inhibiting only at higher concentrations. For the FQR pathway, inhibition was found to be classically competitive with Fd, and the NDH pathway showing partial competition with Fd. We propose a straightforward model for regulation of CEF in plants in which CEF is activated under conditions when stromal ATP low, but is downregulated as ATP levels build up, allowing for effective ATP homeostasis. The differences in Ki values suggest a two-tiered regulatory system, where the highly efficient proton pumping NDH is activated with moderate decreases in ATP, with the less energetically-efficient FQR pathway being activated under more severe ATP depletion. 相似文献

A series of 2-arylhydrazinylidene-3-oxo-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoic acids was synthesized via dealkylation of ethyl 2-arylhydrazinylidene-3-oxo-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoates under the action of a Lewis acid. Under the same conditions, ethyl 2-arylhydrazinylidene-3-oxobutanoates were also found to undergo dealkylation rather than the previously described cyclization into cinnolones. Study of the esterase profile of these compounds showed that trifluoromethyl-containing acids, in contrast to non-fluorinated analogs, were effective and selective inhibitors of carboxylesterase (CES), without substantially inhibiting structurally related cholinesterases (acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase). Moreover, both 3-oxo-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoic and 3-oxobutanoic acids having methyl or methoxy substituent in the arylhydrazinylidene fragment showed high antioxidant activity in the ABTS test. Thus, 2-arylhydrazinylidene-3-oxo-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoic acids were found to constitute a new class of effective and selective CES inhibitors that also possess high radical-scavenging activity. 相似文献

Few investigators have studied the offspring sex ratios of monomorphic shorebirds because visually determining the sex of juveniles is not possible. We investigated the ontogeny of an observed male‐biased adult sex ratio in the federally endangered Great Lakes population of Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus). We determined sex ratios at hatching, banding ( = 9.0 d old), and fledging (23 d old) to determine if the bias arises during the pre‐fledging period and, if so, at what stage. For three consecutive years (2012–2014), we used a molecular technique to determine the sex of 307 chicks and followed individuals to a stage where survival to fledging could be inferred. Within fully‐sexed broods at hatching, the average proportions of male chicks (2012–2014) were 0.47, 0.58, and 0.54, respectively. At banding, the sex ratio remained unbiased in 2012 (0.51), but was male‐biased in 2013 (0.59) and 2014 (0.57). Overall, the sex ratio did not differ significantly from parity at fledging in 2012, but did differ during 2013 (P = 0.01) and 2014 (P = 0.03). Using logistic regression models fit using Bayesian inference, we found strong support for a sex effect on chick survival to fledging age, with higher male than female survival (μmale = 0.83 [95% credible interval: 0.75–0.90]; μfemale = 0.71 [0.61–0.80]). These results suggest that the male‐biased adult sex ratio in Piping Plovers arises, in part, due to differential survival during the pre‐fledging period. This difference did not result from female chicks hatching later in the season or weighing less at banding than male chicks, factors that could potentially affect the likelihood of survival. Future investigations into possible behavioral‐ or weather‐related influences on sex‐specific survival are needed. Our results have important implications for (1) identifying management efforts needed to increase recruitment given female‐biased chick mortality, and (2) conducting population viability analyses, which frequently assume an unbiased fledgling sex ratio. 相似文献
