Four chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) monitored the movement of hidden items in arrays of opaque cups. A chocolate candy was hidden in an array of four cups and temporarily presented paper markers indicated the location of the candy (which otherwise was not visible). These markers were either non-symbolic or symbolic (lexigram) stimuli that in other contexts acted as a label for the hidden candy, and the array was either rotated 180° after the marker was removed or the array remained in the same location. For three of four chimpanzees, performance was better than chance in all conditions and there was no effect of the type of marker. These experiments indicate that chimpanzees can track the movement of a hidden item in an array of identical cups even when they never see the item itself, but only see a temporarily presented marker for the location of that item. However, there was no benefit to the use of symbolic as opposed to non-symbolic stimuli in this performance.  相似文献

The aim of this study is applying nonlinear methods to assess changes in brain dynamics in a placebo-controlled study of midazolam-induced amnesia. Subjects injected with saline and midazolam during study, performed old/new recognition memory tests with EEG recording. Based on previous studies, as midazolam causes anterograde amnesia, we expected that midazolam would affect the EEG’s degree of complexity. Recurrence quantification analysis, and approximate entropy were used in this assessment. These methods compare with other nonlinear techniques such as computation of the correlation dimension, are suitable for non-stationary EEG signals. Our findings suggest that EEG’s complexity decreases during memory retrieval. Although this trend is observed in nonlinear curves related to the midazolam condition, the overall complexity were greater than in the saline condition. This result implies that impaired memory function caused by midazolam is associated with greater EEG’s complexity compared to normal memory retrieval in saline injection.  相似文献

Phosphodiesterase inhibition has received much attention in the past 20 years for the potential treatment of CNS disorders. A primary focus of this work is the enhancement of memory and/or cognitive functioning. The role of PDEs in the augmentation of cyclic nucleotide signaling makes these enzymes attractive targets for enhancing the effects of neuronal communication. This review focuses on recent findings with respect to the role of PDE2 inhibition in cognitive functioning. Special attention is paid to recently disclosed, selective tool compounds and the use of these tool compounds to support the role of PDE2 inhibition in cognition. Recently reported SAR and modeling work will be presented along with discussion of the entry of new PDE2 inhibitors into the clinic.  相似文献

Immunity to malaria is widely believed to wane in the absence of reinfection, but direct evidence for the presence or absence of durable immunological memory to malaria is limited. Here, we characterized the profile of circulating naïve and memory (including central and effector) CD4+ T cells responses of individuals naturally infected by Plasmodium vivax. In the current study, we demonstrated that acute P. vivax infection induces a significant increase in the absolute number of both naïve and memory cells, which were responsible for the production of anti-inflammatory (IL-10) and pro-inflammatory (IFN-γ) cytokines. Finally, we described the profile of memory cell subtypes (TCM-CD45ROhighCCR7+ and TEM-CD45ROhighCCR7), as well as the pattern of cell migration based on CD62L selectin expression, demonstrating that P. vivax-infected donors presented with a predominantly central memory cell profile. Our results indicate that the expansion of both naïve and memory T cells, responsible for the production of both pro-inflammatory and regulatory cytokines, which might also contribute to the modulation of immune responses during P. vivax infection.  相似文献

Pollinators, honey bees in particular, are continuously exposed to various mixtures of pesticides, which contribute to their population decline. Both amitraz and thiacloprid have been proven less toxic to honey bees and are frequently applied in- and out-hive, respectively. We examined the sub-lethal effects of amitraz, thiacloprid and their sequential exposure on learning, memory and sugar responsiveness in Apis mellifera using the Proboscis extension response (PER). Sub-lethal doses of amitraz (0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 µg/bee) and thiacloprid (0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 µg/bee) were tested. Sub-lethal effects were observed only at the highest doses of each pesticide treatment; amitraz (0.4 µg/bee) and thiacloprid (0.2 µg/bee) but not in lower doses. In sequential treatment of amitraz and thiacloprid, reduced acquisition and memory retention were significant across all tested doses. The same profile was also obtained on sugar responsiveness of foragers. Our results suggest that the sequential exposure would pose higher risk to honey bee compared to single pesticide exposure by reducing the bees’ appetitive olfactory learning, memory and sugar acuity more than individual pesticide exposures.  相似文献

This paper argues that the refusal of the Muslim Council of Britain to attend Holocaust Memorial Day highlights a key dimension of memory as political myth: namely, the sense that time is cyclical. Prior external and internal enemies (in their current manifestations) are apocalyptically destined to threaten the integrity of the nation once more. Hence, ideologies based on political myths draw on both the future hopes and the future fears of people. The paper highlights the similarities between Jewish and Pakistani fears, rooted in the Holocaust and Partition, of a repeated ‘cycle of death and suffering’. These loom large especially for those suffering racism. The more bound people are by their narrow group's particular symbols and history, the more apocalyptic their vision of this future is likely to be.  相似文献

Isoprenoids and prenylated proteins have been implicated in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease (AD), including amyloid-β precursor protein metabolism, Tau phosphorylation, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation. However, little is known about the relative importance of the two protein prenyltransferases, farnesyltransferase (FT) and geranylgeranyltransferase-1 (GGT), in the pathogenesis of AD. In this study, we defined the impact of deleting one copy of FT or GGT on the development of amyloid-β (Aβ)-associated neuropathology and learning/memory impairments in APPPS1 double transgenic mice, a well established model of AD. Heterozygous deletion of FT reduced Aβ deposition and neuroinflammation and rescued spatial learning and memory function in APPPS1 mice. Heterozygous deletion of GGT reduced the levels of Aβ and neuroinflammation but had no impact on learning and memory. These results document that farnesylation and geranylgeranylation play differential roles in AD pathogenesis and suggest that specific inhibition of protein farnesylation could be a potential strategy for effectively treating AD.  相似文献

We present an oscillatory network of conductance based spiking neurons of Hodgkin–Huxley type as a model of memory storage and retrieval of sequences of events (or objects). The model is inspired by psychological and neurobiological evidence on sequential memories. The building block of the model is an oscillatory module which contains excitatory and inhibitory neurons with all-to-all connections. The connection architecture comprises two layers. A lower layer represents consecutive events during their storage and recall. This layer is composed of oscillatory modules. Plastic excitatory connections between the modules are implemented using an STDP type learning rule for sequential storage. Excitatory neurons in the upper layer project star-like modifiable connections toward the excitatory lower layer neurons. These neurons in the upper layer are used to tag sequences of events represented in the lower layer. Computer simulations demonstrate good performance of the model including difficult cases when different sequences contain overlapping events. We show that the model with STDP type or anti-STDP type learning rules can be applied for the simulation of forward and backward replay of neural spikes respectively.  相似文献

目的:探讨不同术式对颞叶癫痫患者术后认知功能、记忆能力以及生活质量的影响。方法:选取2014年2月~2018年4月期间我院收治的103例颞叶癫痫患者为研究对象,根据随机数字表法将患者分为单侧前颞叶切除术(ATL)组(n=51,给予ATL治疗)和选择性海马杏仁核切除术(SAH)组(n=52,给予SAH治疗),比较两组患者的手术疗效、术后认知功能、记忆能力、生活质量以及并发症。结果:两组术后6个月临床总有效率比较差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。两组患者术后6个月生活质量量表各项评分均较术前升高(P0.05)。两组患者术后6个月总智商(FIQ)、语言智商(VIQ)评分均较术前升高,且SAH组高于ATL组(P0.05)。两组术后6个月优势半球侧记忆商数(MQ)评分降低,非优势半球侧MQ评分升高(P0.05);SAH组术后6个月非优势半球侧MQ评分高于ATL组(P0.05)。两组患者术后并发症发生率比较无统计学差异(P0.05)。结论:颞叶癫痫患者采用ATL、SAH术式治疗,可获得相似的治疗效果,安全性均较好,但SAH术式在保护患者的认知功能及记忆能力方面更优。  相似文献
