This article demonstrates the use of mixed effects models for characterizing individual and sample average growth curves based on serial anthropometric data. These models are advancement over conventional general linear regression because they effectively handle the hierarchical nature of serial growth data. Using body weight data on 70 infants in the Born in Bradford study, we demonstrate how a mixed effects model provides a better fit than a conventional regression model. Further, we demonstrate how mixed effects models can be used to explore the influence of environmental factors on the sample average growth curve. Analyzing data from 183 infant boys (aged 3–15 months) from rural South India, we show how maternal education shapes infant growth patterns as early as within the first 6 months of life. The presented analyses highlight the utility of mixed effects models for analyzing serial growth data because they allow researchers to simultaneously predict individual curves, estimate sample average curves, and investigate the effects of environmental exposure variables. It is well established that lipid metabolism is controlled, in part, by circadian clocks. However, circadian clocks lose temporal precision with age and correlates with elevated incidence in dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome in older adults. Because our lab has shown that lipoic acid (LA) improves lipid homeostasis in aged animals, we hypothesized that LA affects the circadian clock to achieve these results. We fed 24 month old male F344 rats a diet supplemented with 0.2% (w/w) LA for 2 weeks prior to sacrifice and quantified hepatic circadian clock protein levels and clock-controlled lipid metabolic enzymes. LA treatment caused a significant phase-shift in the expression patterns of the circadian clock proteins Period (Per) 2, Brain and Muscle Arnt-Like1 (BMAL1), and Reverse Erythroblastosis virus (Rev-erb) β without altering the amplitude of protein levels during the light phase of the day. LA also significantly altered the oscillatory patterns of clock-controlled proteins associated with lipid metabolism. The level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α was significantly increased and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were both significantly reduced, suggesting that the LA-supplemented aged animals are in a catabolic state. We conclude that LA remediates some of the dyslipidemic processes associated with advanced age, and this mechanism may be at least partially through entrainment of circadian clocks. 相似文献

Evolutionary rescue can prevent populations from declining under climate change, and should be more likely at high-latitude, “leading” edges of species’ ranges due to greater temperature anomalies and gene flow from warm-adapted populations. Using a resurrection study with seeds collected before and after a 7-year period of record warming, we tested for thermal adaptation in the scarlet monkeyflower Mimulus cardinalis. We grew ancestors and descendants from northern-edge, central, and southern-edge populations across eight temperatures. Despite recent climate anomalies, populations showed limited evolution of thermal performance curves. However, one southern population evolved a narrower thermal performance breadth by 1.31°C, which matches the direction and magnitude of the average decrease in seasonality experienced. Consistent with the climate variability hypothesis, thermal performance breadth increased with temperature seasonality across the species’ geographic range. Inconsistent with performance trade-offs between low and high temperatures across populations, we did not detect a positive relationship between thermal optimum and mean temperature. These findings fail to support the hypothesis that evolutionary response to climate change is greatest at the leading edge, and suggest that the evolution of thermal performance is unlikely to rescue most populations from the detrimental effects of rapidly changing climate. 相似文献

Ecological studies in tropical rain forests traditionally focus on trees above a threshold diameter at breast height (dbh), since ignoring plant species of the other structural compartments is believed to be an acceptable tradeoff between exhaustiveness and effectiveness. However, the consequences of missing species below a threshold dbh value have been largely neglected so far. We evaluated whether the response of species diversity of ≥10-cm dbh trees was similar to the response of other structural ensembles (namely treelets, saplings, and terricolous herbs) in a lowland tropical rain forest, to three disturbance regimes: natural gap dynamics (control), and selective logging with and without additional thinning. We studied forest vegetation composition and diversity in a 20-yr replicated field experiment comprising nine 1 ha permanent plots established in a semi-deciduous rain forest of the Congo Basin and equally distributed among the three treatments. Once corrected by stem density, species richness was similar between logged (20 years since logging) and untouched old-growth forest stands with respect of trees, but higher with respect of treelets. As disturbance intensity increased, species richness increased within sapling layers but decreased within herb layers, while species spatial turnover (beta diversity) increased in both cases. Regarding the parameters of the partitioned rarefaction curves and relative abundance distribution curves, no correlation was found between trees and any of the other structural compartments. Whilst tree and treelet species composition was similar among treatments, the understories still reflected past disturbance intensity, with a strong response of the sapling and herb layers. These results show that ecological studies based solely on tree layers (dbh ≥ 10 cm) are misleading because their response to disturbance cannot be used as a surrogate for the response of other structural ensembles. Long-lasting effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the sapling bank and the herb layer may durably influence the long-term forest dynamics. Since overstory but not understory plant communities have recovered from human disturbances 20 years after silvicultural operations, African tropical rain forest ecosystems may not be as resilient to selective logging as previously thought. 相似文献

Two branches of a field-grown Chamaecy-paris obtusa tree were enclosed in chambers of an open gas exchange system for continuous CO2 exchange measurements. One branch was subjected to ambient air (CO2, 370 μmol mol–1) and the other was subjected to CO2-enriched air (800 μmol mol–1). The CO2 exchange rate of the branches, air temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were recorded every 4 min by a computer
during the two experimental periods of July 1994 to June 1995 (experiment 1) and April 1996 to August 1997 (experiment 2).
The response of CO2 gas exchange rate to light changed with the seasonal temperature. The highest saturated rate of net photosynthesis on a leaf
area basis was observed in May and October in both CO2 treatments when the mean daytime temperature was about 18–19°C. This temperature was almost equal to the yearly mean daytime
temperature. Above and below this temperature, the saturated net photosynthesis rate decreased. The net photosynthesis rate
was usually higher in the elevated CO2 treatment. The ratio of monthly net photosynthesis rate in elevated CO2 to that in ambient CO2 was linearly related to the monthly mean daytime temperature. This ratio increased by 3.3% for each 1°C increase in the monthly
mean daytime temperature; the highest ratio of 1.8 occurred in August. When the ratio was 1.0, the temperature was about 5–6°C,
which was close to the mean daytime temperature of the coldest month. Elevated CO2 increased per unit area net photosynthesis by 38.5% and 43.7% in experiments 1 and 2, respectively.

Objectives: The goal of the current study is to determine whether the β-adrenoreceptor (β-AR) plays a role in the anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects of zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG). Material and methods: This has been investigated in CHO-K1 cells transfected with the human β1-, β2-, β3-AR and in ob/ob mice. Cyclic AMP assays were carried out along with binding studies. Ob/ob mice were treated with ZAG and glucose transportation and insulin were examined in the presence or absence of propranolol. Results: ZAG bound to the β3-AR with higher affinity (Kd 46 ± 1 nM) than the β2-AR (Kd 71 ± 3 nM) while there was no binding to the β1-AR, and this correlated with the increases in cyclic AMP in CHO-K1 cells transfected with the various β-AR and treated with ZAG. Treatment of ob/ob mice with ZAG increased protein expression of β3-AR in gastrocnemius muscle, and in white and brown adipose tissues, but had no effect on expression of β1- and β2-AR. A reduction of body weight was seen and urinary glucose excretion, increase in body temperature, reduction in maximal plasma glucose and insulin levels in the oral glucose tolerance test, and stimulation of glucose transport into skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, were completely attenuated by the non-specific β-AR antagonist propranolol. Conclusion: The results suggest that the effects of ZAG on body weight and insulin sensitivity in ob/ob mice are manifested through a β-3AR, or possibly a β2-AR. 相似文献

Abstract We examined 11 non‐linear regression models to determine which of them best fitted curvilinear species accumulation curves based on pit‐trapping data for reptiles in a range of heterogeneous and homogenous sites in mesic, semi‐arid and arid regions of Western Australia. A well‐defined plateau in a species accumulation curve is required for any of the models accurately to estimate species richness. Two different measures of effort (pit‐trapping days and number of individuals caught) were used to determine if the measure of effort influenced the choice of the best model(s). We used species accumulation curves to predict species richness, determined the trapping effort required to catch a nominated percentage (e.g. 95%) of the predicted number of species in an area, and examined the relationship between species accumulation curves with diversity and rarity. Species richness, diversity and the proportion of rare species in a community influenced the shape of species accumulation curves. The Beta‐P model provided the best overall fit (highest r2) for heterogeneous and homogeneous sites. For heterogeneous sites, Hill, Rational, Clench, Exponential and Weibull models were the next best. For homogeneous habitats, Hill, Weibull and Chapman–Richards were the next best models. There was very little difference between Beta‐P and Hill models in fitting the data to accumulation curves, although the Hill model generally over‐estimated species richness. Most models worked equally well for both measures of trapping effort. Because the number of individuals caught was influenced by both pit‐trapping effort and the abundance of individuals, both measures of effort must be considered if species accumulation curves are to be used as a planning tool. Trapping effort to catch a nominated percentage of the total predicted species in homogeneous and heterogeneous habitats varied among sites, but even for only 75% of the predicted number of species it was generally much higher than the typical effort currently being used for terrestrial vertebrate fauna surveys in Australia. It was not possible to provide a general indication of the effort required to predict species richness for a site, or to capture a nominated proportion of species at a site, because species accumulation curves are heavily influenced by the characteristics of particular sites. 相似文献

Chiropsalmus sp. medusae collected in this study ranged from 3 to 71 mm diagonal bell width and displayed growth best described by the
following equation size (mm) = 74.9 × exp (−exp(0.041 (time since metamorphosis (day) −35.6674))). Growth rates of up to 7 mm week−1 increase in diagonal bell width are theoretically possible, with animals able to reach sexual maturity in approximately 70 days.
Correlation of the number of rings on the statoliths with the predicted age of the individual from the field produced a relationship
