On the Recovery of [3H]Noradrenaline from Different Metabolic Compartments of Rat Brain with Respect to the Role of Catechol-O-Methyltransferase

Abstract: Rats were treated with reserpine, desmethylimipramine, or carrier, either alone or in combination with tropolone. Either 10 min (t₁) or 1 h (t₂) after intraventricular injection of [³H]noradrenaline, they were decapitated. The total ³H activity and the recovery of [³H]noradrenaline were determined in tissue extracts from various brain regions. Maximum total ³H activity was measured at t₁ in all tropolone-treated rats; the mean sum of these results served as an estimate of the initial tissue concentration of [³H]noradrenaline. At t₁, 40–50% of the sum of [³H]noradrenaline and its metabolites was recovered unchanged in normal rats; reserpine and DMI reduced the recovery to 18–27%. In all groups, the decline of [³H]noradrenaline was retarded after t₁. Inhibition of catechol-O-methyltransferase by tropolone caused consistently elevated [³H]noradrenaline levels, but did not affect the metabolic rate after t₁ when compared with similarly pretreated, but tropolone-free rats. Thus, if catechol-O-methyltransferase was inhibited during the injection of [³H]noradrenaline, a higher percentage of the amine had been taken up into spaces with a slow noradrenaline turnover. The maximum increase was seen when the neuronal uptake, was inhibited by desmethylimipramine. This supported the hypothesis that an additional extraneuronal space exists, in addition to the known intraneuronal and extraneuronal compartments, which has a slow noradrenaline turnover. The tropolone effect on the noradrenaline recovery possibly shows that there might be a saturable “methylating system,” similar to that described for the periphery, in which catechol-O-methyltransferase is linked to the extraneuronal uptake₂. By affecting the access of noradrenaline to non-neuronal cells it might influence the rate of noradrenaline elimination from the intercellular space.     

Structural features are as important as sequence homologies inDrosophila heat shock gene upstream regions

Summary Pelham has shown that theDrosophila hsp 70 gene is not transcribed under heat shock conditions unless a given upstream region is present. Davidson et al. have recently compiled a list of sequences homologous to this region in otherDrosophila heat shock genes. They proposed that a set of unlinked genes, such as the heat shock genes, could be coordinately induced through an interaction in cis with a common regulatory molecule. That this interaction involves structural elements is suggested by the fact that these upstream regions share inverted repeats as well as areas of Z-DNA potential. Furthermore, using the Calladine-Dickerson rules for local helical parameters, we show that these regions share structural homology. This is significant because the presence of regions homologous to a derived consensus sequence does not necessarily imply structural similarity. Therefore, we suggest that these structural features are at least as important as the sequence homologies in enabling the heat shock response.

居民点鸟类与人类关系极为密切,在居民点生态系统中起着不可忽视的作用,因此对其生态学的研究具有一定意义。杜恒勤(1958、1959)、周昌乔等(1959)、钱国桢(1964)、郑光美(1965、1982),赵正阶(1981)等,对麻雀、家燕、金腰燕等居民点鸟类进行过大量种群生态学研究。居民点鸟类群落研究和数量统计,尚未见有报道。     

经济发达地区稳定发展农业的对策

江苏省常熟市地处长江南岸阳澄湖畔,临近大中城市,距上海100km,离苏州、无锡、南通不足50km,历史上为苏南重点商品粮基地之一。因地理位置、地形、地貌及大气环流等因素所决定,常熟属北亚热带南部湿润地区,年平均气温15.5℃,年日照时数2202.9小时,年雨量1038.4mm。全市境内湖泊、河流纵横交错连结成网,有水域1.75×10~4ha,大小河流4477条。全境总面积1142.2km~2,北部较高,海拔3.11m左右,向南缓缓降低,最低地区海拔0.61m。     

Regional Dissociation of Cyclic AMP and Inositol Phosphate Formation in Response to Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone in the Rat Brain

The present study was undertaken to define effects of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on formation of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and inositol phosphates (IPs) in rat brain regions. The brain of male Wistar rats was dissected into seven discrete regions, and each region was sliced. The slices were incubated in Krebs-Henseleit glucose buffer containing varying doses of TRH. TRH caused a significant and consistent increase in cAMP level, but not in formation of IPs, in the hypothalamus, striatum, and midbrain. TRH stimulated formation of IPs in the cerebellum, where the tripeptide did not change the cAMP level. In contrast, formation of neither cAMP nor IPs was affected by TRH in the cortex, hippocampus, or pons-medulla. These data suggest that TRH possesses two distinct types of brain intracellular signaling systems, which vary with brain regions.

从距今2500万年的中新世初到更新世,欧洲地中海沿岸地区的植被是从东亚型的热带——亚热带常绿阔叶林逐渐过渡为旱生性的蒿——藜草原。古热带和亚洲、北美成份从晚中新世起逐渐消失,少数一直延续到中更新世。孢粉分析表明,地中海成分从中上新世起有明显增加,地中海常绿硬叶林的发展与北极冰盖的形成密切相关。     

Atmospheric input of inorganic nitrogen to the Western Mediterranean

Bulk inorganic nitrogen deposition was monitored over a period of 3 years at the Bavella Pass (Corsica, France). Annual fluxes range between 126 and 150mol.m^–2.d-^–1, increasing slightly with annual rainfall. Natural background average concentrations of rain water and associated fluxes were estimated from a classification of rain events into natural (Oceanic and Saharan), polluted and composite. Long range transport of incoming polluted air masses increases the atmospheric wet nitrogen input by at least a factor of 1.6 in this Mediterranean area. Extrapolation of atmospheric dissolved inorganic nitrogen input to the Western Mediterranean leads to fluxes of 80 to l00mol.m^–2.d-^–1. This atmospheric input is in the same order of magnitude as the inorganic nitrogen riverine input. As a consequence, the nitrogen budget for the Mediterranean has had to be reassessed. Atmospheric wet inorganic nitrogen input is of noticeable importance to marine Mediterranean ecosystems, representing on average 10 to 25% of new production in the Western Basin, with values of up to 60% in oligotrophic zones.     

Molecular analysis of theArabidopsis pattern formation geneGNOM: gene structure and intragenic complementation

TheGNOM gene is required for pattern formation along the main body axis of the embryo in the flowering plantArabidopsis thaliana. Mutations in theGNOM gene alter the asymmetric division of the zygote and interfere with the formation of distinct apical-basal regions in the developing embryo. We have isolated theGNOM gene by positional cloning, characterised its structure and determined the molecular lesions in mutant alleles. Although the predicted 163 kDa GNOM protein has a conserved domain in common with the yeast secretory protein Sec7p, it is most closely related in size and overall similarity to the product of the yeastYEC2 gene, which is not essential for cell viability. Four fully complementinggnom alleles carry missense mutations in conserved regions, seven partially complementing alleles have premature stop codon mutations and two non-complementing alleles have splice-site lesions. Our results suggest that the GNOM protein acts as a complex of identical subunits and that partial complementation may involve low levels of full-length protein generated by inefficient translational read-through.Communicated by H.
