Active restoration strategies increase the production of leaf litter in tropical forests, but little is known about their effect on litter decomposition and subsequent nutrient release. We quantified changes in leaf litter stoichiometry during decomposition in former pasture sites under contrasting restoration strategies (natural regeneration, applied nucleation/islands tree planting and plantation), as well as in nearby primary forest. Litterbags were employed to evaluate decomposition. We used a leaf mixture of either the four planted tree species in the plantation and island treatments or the nearby primary forest and compared them under a factorial design. Decomposition rates were similar between restoration treatments (p > 0.5), but leaves decomposed faster in the forest mixture than in the plantation mixture (p < 0.01). The content of Ca, Mg, K, P, and the C:N ratio were higher in the forest mixture at the beginning and during decomposition (p < 0.05); the N content in the plantation mixture was higher at the beginning but lower during decomposition (p < 0.05), which meant greater mobilization of nitrogen per unit of carbon lost. K and P had a strong initial release, while Mg was released more gradually. N and Ca had an irregular pattern of initial fast release, immobilization, and re‐release in the later stages. We conclude that the differences in rates of decomposition and nutrient release in these systems under restoration were at least partly determined by the floristic heterogeneity and chemical quality of the leaf litter that reaches the soil. 相似文献

An in vitro propagation system for Artemisia vulgaris L., a traditional medicinal plant, has been developed. The best organogenic response, including adventitious shoot number
and elongation, was obtained when hypocotyl segments were cultured onto MS medium supplemented with 4.54 μM TDZ (N-phenyl-N′-(1,2,3-thidiazol-yl) urea). Up to 28 shoots formed per explant for an optimal duration of exposure of 48 days. Regenerated
shoots formed roots when subcultured onto a medium containing 8.56 μM IAA (indole-3-acetic acid). Healthy plantlets were transferred
to a garden soil:farmyard soil:sand (2:1:1) mixture for acclimatization, which was successful, and subsequent maturity was
achieved under greenhouse conditions over a six-month period. The survival rate of the plantlets varied under acclimatization.
The regeneration protocol developed in this study provides a basis for germplasm conservation and for further investigation
of medicinally active constituents of A. vulgaris. This optimized protocol has been successfully employed for genetic transformation studies in A. vulgaris, which are currently underway in our laboratory. 相似文献

Nucleic acid synthesis is precisely controlled in living organisms by highly evolved protein enzymes. The remarkable fidelity of information transfer realized between template and product strands is the result of both the spatial selectivity of the polymerase active site for Watson-Crick base pairs at the point of nucleotide coupling and subsequent proof-reading mechanisms. In the absence of naturally derived polymerases, in vitro template-directed synthesis by means of chemically activated mononucleotides has proven remarkably inefficient and error-prone. Nevertheless, the spontaneous emergence of RNA polymers and their protein-free replication is frequently taken as a prerequisite for the hypothetical 'RNA world'. We present two specific difficulties that face the de novo synthesis of RNA-like polymers in a prebiotic (enzyme-free) environment: nucleoside base selection and intramolecular strand cyclization. These two problems are inherent to the assumption that RNA formed de novo from pre-existing, chemically-activated mononucleotides in solution. As a possible resolution to these problems, we present arguments and experimental support for our hypothesis that small molecules (referred to as 'molecular midwives') and alternative backbone linkages (under equilibrium control) facilitated the emergence of the first RNA-like polymers of life. 相似文献

Lithiation of [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)2(OH)2] (1), followed by reaction with TiCl3(thf)3 or TiCl4(thf)2, led to the corresponding titanium-calix[4]arene complexes [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)2(O)2]TiCl] (2) and [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)2(O)2]TiCl2] (3), respectively. Reaction of 1 with TiCl4(thf)2 results in demethylation of the calix[4]arene and the obtention of [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)2(O)3]TiCl] (4), whose hydrolysis led to [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)(OH)3] (6). The preparation of 6 can be carried out as a one-pot synthesis. Both 2 and 4 undergo alkylation reactions using conventional procedures, thus forming surprisingly stable organometallic species, namely [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)2(O)2Ti(R)] (R = Me (7); CH2Ph (8), p-MeC6H4 (9) and [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)(O)3Ti(R)] (R = Me (10); CH2Ph (11); p-MeC6H4 (12)). Complexes 7 and 9 undergo a thermal oxidative conversion into 10 and 12, occurring with the demethylation of one of the methoxy groups. A solid state structural property of 9 and 12 has been revealed by X-ray analysis showing a self-assembly of the monomeric units into a columnar polymer, where the p-tolyl substituent at the metal functions as a guest group for an adjacent titanium-calixarene. Reductive alkylation of 3 with Mg(CH2Ph)2 gave 8 instead of forming the corresponding dialkyl derivative. Two synthetic routes have been devised for the synthesis of the Ti(III)-Ti(III) dimer [p-But-calix[4]-(OMe)(O)3Ti]2] (13): the reduction of 4 and the reaction of TiCl3(thf)3 with the lithiated form of 6. A very strong antiferromagnetic coupling is responsible for the peculiar magnetic behavior of 13. The proposed structures have been supported by the X-ray analyses of 4, 9, 12 and 13. 相似文献

Dissolved nutrient inputs in bulk precipitation and outputs in streamwater were measured during 3 years of contrasting hydrological conditions in a 6.3-ha, grazed heathland watershed on schists in the Montseny mountains (NE Spain), drained by an intermittent stream. On average, 39% of the precipitation became streamflow. Bulk precipitation delivered positive net alkalinity (mean 0.22 keq/ha/yr), sulphate input was moderate (9.0 kg SO4-S/ha/yr), and the mean input of inorganic N was not exceptionally high (6.6 kg/ha/yr). Ion concentrations were relatively low in streamwater; SO4
2- was the dominant anion. Most concentrations in streamwater varied seasonally, with maxima in late summer or early autumn and minima in spring. This pattern probably resulted from increased availability of ions for leaching due to decomposition of organic matter and chemical weathering during the warm period. Nitrate concentrations were relatively high in winter and dropped sharply in early spring, probably because of biological uptake. Annual element outputs in streamwater varied between years and seemed to be controlled by both the amount of annual streamflow and its seasonal distribution. Annual inputs exceeded outputs for dissolved inorganic N. The watershed accumulated H+ and Ca2+, had net losses of Na+ and Mg2+, and was close to steady state for K+, SO4
2-, Cl- and alkalinity. The chloride budgets gave no evidence of substantial dry deposition in this system. The cationic denudation rate was negative (-0.14 keq/ha/yr) because Ca2+ retention was higher than net exports of Na+ and Mg2+ from silicate weathering. Low nutrient export and little production of alkalinity suggest that this watershed has a low buffering capacity. 相似文献

ChimpanzeesPan troglodytes in Kibale National Park, Uganda occasionally swallow entire leaves ofRubia cordifolia (Rubiaceae) without chewing them. The leaves are subsequently egested with minimal damage and no sign of any significant
digestion. Similar behavior reported elsewhere has been proposed to have medicinal effects. Here we test the hypothesis that
chemical components in swallowed leaves have negative effects on intestinal nematodes. We used anin vitro assay to detect the effects of methanol extracts ofR. cordifolia leaves on nematodes,Strongyloides spp., cultured from feces. Control extracts were distilled water, methanol solution, and methanol extracts of food items
that were chewed, rather than swallowed, by chimpanzees. Effects of experimental or control solutions were assayed by nematode
motility. There was no difference in nematode motility among control and experimental extracts. This study therefore did not

Amino acids were most likely available on the primitive Earth, produced in the primitive atmosphere or in hydrothermal vents. Import of extraterrestrial amino acids may have represented the major supply, as suggested by micrometeorite collections and simulation experiments in space and in the laboratory. Selective condensation of amino acids in water has been achieved via N-carboxy anydrides. Homochiral peptides with an alternating sequence of hydrophobic and hydrophilic amino acids adopt stereoselective and thermostable beta-pleated sheet structures. Some of the homochiral beta-sheets strongly accelerate the hydrolysis of oligoribonucleotides. The beta-sheet-forming peptides have also been shown to protect their amino acids from racemization. Even if peptides are not able to self-replicate, i.e., to replicate a complete sequence from the mixture of amino acids, the accumulation of chemically active peptides on the primitive Earth appears plausible via thermostable and stereoselective beta-sheets made of alternating sequences. 相似文献
