A previous study provided a general quantitative analysis of 169 collected medicinal plants used by the Q’eqchi’ Maya healers of southern Belize. This paper is focused on a statistical analysis of this ethnobotanical information using the method developed by Moerman (1991). The residual values obtained from the regression analysis of the Q’eqchi’ medicinal plant species versus the species listed in the checklist of the vascular plants of Belize (Balick, Nee, and Atha, 2001) placed the Piperaceae, the Rubiaceae, and the Asteraceae in the first three ranks, and the Poaceae, the Cyperaceae, and the Orchidaceae in the last three ranks. The results were compared with three northern temperate regions (Kashmir, Korea, and North America) and three southern neotropical regions (Chiapas, Ecuador, and Veracruz). The coefficients of correlation between the checklist of vascular plants of Belize and the other six floras showed, as expected, high values for regions with similar climatic type. Thus, high correlations were determined between the tropical vegetation of Belize and those of Chiapas, Ecuador, and Veracruz. The coefficients were lower with the three temperate floras but still quite high. The same analysis was done with the medicinal plants only and led to much lower coefficients, but once again, the higher results were obtained for Chiapas and Veracruz. In this case, the last rank for Ecuador demonstrated that the selection of plants in traditional medicine by the indigenous people is a complex phenomenon which depends not only on the composition of the flora but also on culture-specific factors.
Analyse par Regression des Plantes Médicinales des Mayas Q’eqchi'’ du Sud du Belize
Résumé  Une précédente étude a fourni une analyse quantitative générale de 169 plantes médicinales utilisées par les guérisseurs Maya Q’eqchi’ du sud du Belize. Ce document se concentre sur l’analyse statistique des informations ethnobotaniques selon la méthode développée par Moerman (1991). Les valeurs résiduelles obtenues à partir des analyses de régression des plantes médicinales Q’eqchi’ vis-à-vis des espèces mentionnées dans la liste des plantes vasculaires du Belize (Balick, Nee, et Atha, 2001) ont placé les Piperacées, les Rubiacées et les Asteracées aux trois premières places, et les Poacées, les Cyperacées et les Orchidacées aux trois dernières places. Les résultats ont été comparés avec ceux de trois régions tempérées du nord (Cachemire, Corée, et Amérique du Nord) et de trois régions néotropicales du sud (Chiapas, équateur, et Veracruz). Les coefficients de corrélation entre les plantes listées dans le manuel des plantes vasculaires du Belize et les six autres flores ont montré comme attendu de hautes valeurs pour les régions possédant un type climatique similaire. Ainsi, une haute corrélation a été démontrée entre la végétation tropicale du Belize et celles du Chiapas, de l’équateur, et du Veracruz. Les coefficients étaient plus bas avec les trois régions tempérées mais tout de même passablement élevés. La même analyse a été effectuée avec les plantes médicinales et a mené à des coefficients beaucoup plus bas, mais encore une fois, les résultats les plus élevés ont été obtenus pour le Chiapas et le Veracruz. Dans ce cas, la dernière position de l’équateur a souligné que la sélection des plantes par les indigènes dans la médecine traditionnelle est un phénomène complexe qui dépend non seulement de la composition de la flore mais aussi de facteurs spécifiques à la culture.

Species invasions have been a central theme in ecology over the past decades, with a focus on invasions of non-indigenous European species in the New World. However, within Europe, native species may also become invasive. Such species rapidly increase their geographic range and may at the same time broaden their ecological amplitude. We report on Lactuca serriola L., which has shown a rapid range expansion in many parts of Europe. We reconstructed its geographical spread through The Netherlands; furthermore, we tested for changes in its ecological amplitude.

Before 1950, L. serriola was rare in The Netherlands, recorded from only 80 grid-cells (of 5×5 km2). Subsequently, its distribution increased from 219 grid-cells (1980), to 546 cells (990) and 998 grid cells (2000). It currently occupies at least 60% of The Netherlands. Analyses of relevées demonstrate, using detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), that the variance in the assemblage of species co-occurring with L. serriola increased significantly since 1940, indicating that the species currently occurs in a broader range of vegetation types. Correlating averages of Ellenberg's indicator values per vegetation relevée with time, we found correlations for continentality (+), acidity (−) and (soil) humidity (+). Moreover, the proportion of phanerophytes in the relevées increased over time. These findings suggest that in addition to its original ruderal habitat, L. serriola also currently occurs in more closed vegetation types. Based on analyses of two other co-occurring Asteraceae species, we showed that these patterns were specific for L. serriola only. We conclude that L. serriola has broadened its ecological amplitude and discuss four mutually non-exclusive explanations for the recent invasiveness of L. serriola: (i) Effects of a changed environment: global warming and ruderalisation; (ii) metapopulation dynamics and increased diaspore pressure; (iii) microevolution; (iv) genetic reinforcement due to hybridisation with conspecific (crop) species.  相似文献

Silver products have been used for thousands of years for their beneficial effects, often for hygiene and in more recent years as antimicrobials on wounds from burns, trauma, and diabetic ulcers. Silver sulfadiazine creams (Silvazine and Flamazine) are topical ointments that are marketed globally. In recent years, a range of wound dressings with slow-release Ag compounds have been introduced, including Acticoat, Actisorb Silver, Silverlon, and others. While these are generally accepted as useful for control of bacterial infections (and also against fungi and viruses), key issues remain, including importantly the relative efficacy of different silver products for wound and burn uses and the existence of microbes that are resistant to Ag+. These are beneficial products needing further study, although each has drawbacks. The genes (and proteins) involved in bacterial resistance to Ag have been defined and studied in recent years.  相似文献

Ecosystem level processes and species interactions have become important concepts in conservation and land management. Despite being New Zealand’s greatest contributors to global diversity, native invertebrates have been largely overlooked in the assessment of land values, and their diversity has often been assumed to reflect native plant diversity without justification. Invertebrates can in fact affect plant species composition, and in ecosystems such as New Zealand’s remaining indigenous and semi-modified tussock grasslands can do so in excess of more conspicuous vertebrate grazers. An understanding of the interactions between invertebrates and their plant hosts may be informative in assessing land conservation values, increase the efficiency of rapid inventory analyses and would be applicable across the production-conservation spectrum. This study considers the Curculionoidea, vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen communities of two semi-modified tussock grasslands in the Otago region of southern New Zealand. Quantitative plant and invertebrate sampling were carried out in January 2001. Data were analysed using ANalysis Of SIMilarity (ANOSIM) and Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) ordination techniques. Vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen species richness was highest in the same site and plots as native weevil species richness, however the proportion of native vegetation in these locations was lower. Associations identified between Curculionoidea and vascular plants were dismissed due to the confounding effect of species frequency across samples. This appeared to have little influence on associations with bryophytes and/or lichens and these were given more weighting. The ecological implications of associations are considered and variability in weevil composition is discussed in reference to the tussock grassland environment. The importance of plant–invertebrate relationships to conservation and the uses and limitations of the PRIMER MDS ordination technique for determining associations are discussed.  相似文献

Cholesterol and its precursors, namely 7-dehydrocholesterol, desmosterol and lathosterol are important biochemical markers of cholesterol biosynthesis, and their quantification in body fluids is useful for the diagnosis of cholesterol biosynthesis pathway disorders. A rapid and sensitive gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric method was developed and validated for quantitative analysis of five sterols (cholesterol, 7-dehydrocholesterol, desmosterol, lathosterol and sitosterol) in amniotic fluid. The method was linear for all compounds (r2 > 0.99), and intra and inter-assay coefficients of variation were typically below 5%, and inaccuracy was within a ±12% interval. The method was applied to 330 amniotic fluid samples, grouped by gestational age between 13 and 22 weeks of pregnancy, in order to establish reference intervals for sterols in this specimen. The obtained concentrations (μmol/L) for each sterol was as follows: 22.1758 ± 4.2716 at 13 weeks and 78.5082 ± 12.9041 at 22 weeks for cholesterol; 0.0039 ± 0.0007 at 13 weeks and 0.1150 ± 0.0212 at 22 weeks for 7-dehydrocholesterol; 0.1562 ± 0.0406 at 13 weeks and 0.7691 ± 0.0821 at 22 weeks for desmosterol; 0.0272 ± 0.0035 at 13 weeks and 0.8551 ± 0.1791 at 22 weeks for lathosterol; and 0.0404 ± 0.0039 at 13 weeks and 0.2326 ± 0.0386 at 22 weeks for sitosterol. The method was also applied to one pathological sample that showed decreased levels of cholesterol, and higher concentration of 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is consistent with a 7-dehydrocholesterol-reductase deficiency. Our results showed that as long as pregnancy goes on, the concentrations of cholesterol and precursors increase in amniotic fluid, which is related to the increased need for cholesterol by the fetus. The reference range of each sterol in amniotic fluid was calculated at different gestational ages and will be useful for the interpretation and validation of biochemical prenatal diagnosis of inborn errors of sterol biosynthesis.  相似文献

Results of studies in dairy cattle about the magnitude of the genotype-environment interaction (GEI) are variable, depending on the definitions of genotype and environment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of the interaction of genotype and feeding system (confinement and grazing) in the Mexican genetic evaluation of Jersey cattle for milk yield. The number of lactations and animals in the pedigree used were 5122 and 18 432. An animal model and the MTDFREML program were used to estimate genetic parameters and predict genetic values of the animals. Bivariate analysis was carried out considering the performance of confined and grazing cows as two different traits. Three indicator variables were used to assess GEI: (i) magnitude of the genetic correlation coefficients, (ii) correlation between predicted breeding values and (iii) frequency of coincidence in the ranking of top sires. The magnitude of GEI depended on the choice of the indicator variable. The estimate of genetic correlation coefficient less than unity (0.76; P < 0.05) suggested the presence of biologically important GEI. The differences in phenotypic averages and variances between confinement and grazing systems seem to be the main causes for the genotype by environment interaction detected. However, the correlation coefficient between breeding values from confined and grazing animals (0.96) and the frequency of coincidence between breeding values of common sires within the top 100 in confinement and grazing (0.86) indicated low-to-moderate re-ranking of animals or top sires. In addition, the high correlations between predicted breeding values of Mexican genetic evaluation and the two environments (0.99 and 0.93 for confinement and grazing) indicated that for the two feeding systems, breeding values from national analyses could be safely used.  相似文献

NMR‐monitored pH titration experiments are routinely used to measure site‐specific protein pKa values. Accurate experimental pKa values are essential in dissecting enzyme catalysis, in studying the pH‐dependence of protein stability and ligand binding, in benchmarking pKa prediction algorithms, and ultimately in understanding electrostatic effects in proteins. However, due to the complex ways in which pH‐dependent electrostatic and structural changes manifest themselves in NMR spectra, reported apparent pKa values are often dependent on the way that NMR pH‐titration curves are analyzed. It is therefore important to retain the raw NMR spectroscopic data to allow for documentation and possible re‐interpretation. We have constructed a database of primary NMR pH‐titration data, which is accessible via a web interface. Here, we report statistics of the database contents and analyze the data with a global perspective to provide guidelines on best practice for fitting NMR titration curves.
