Theropods have fascinated both paleontologists and the general public due to their large diversity of sizes and morphologies. They also present a large variation in tooth morphologies. Previous studies have estimated the bite force of several specimens. The goal of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between the tooth size, shape and position on the skull and mandible and the bite force of these dinosaurs. Measurements were made on several theropods, including the bending strength of the teeth on the anterior-posterior and the mediolateral axes of the jaws, as well as the bending strength of the mandible, and were compared to fossil and modern Crocodylia. We observed that several bending strength maxima of the teeth trends were aligned with key areas of the mandible, and that the size, shape as well as the position of the teeth on the jaws were correlated with the bite force of both Crocodylia and theropods, which can be related to their diet and feeding habits.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate corneal epithelial thickness (CET), corneal densitometry (CD) in 84 myopic eyes (57 patients) more than 22 years after photorefractive keratectomy, using anterior segment‐optical coherence tomography (AS‐OCT) and Scheimpflug imaging system. The CET was significantly higher in all operated eyes than in unoperated eyes in central sector. A statistically significant increase in CD in corneal anterior layer of central sector was shown in groups of operated eyes with greater ablation depth respect to unoperated eyes. While there was no significant difference in CD between the operated eyes groups with lower ablation depth and unoperated eyes. A significant trend toward higher values in anterior CD with deeper ablations in central sector was found. These noninvasive imaging techniques allow to better understand the corneal remodeling process after photoablation and to monitor the patients over time.  相似文献

The main morphological features of the cephalic region of the larva of Haematobia irritans (L.) are the oral grooves, tripartite labium and the antennomaxillary protuberances that have the dorsal, terminal and ventral sensory organs. The total number of sensilla that are found on the terminal organ differs from other cyclorrhaphous-fly larvae. The fan-shaped anterior spiracles usually consist of seven bulbous digits that are unequal in length. The creeping welts consist of notched, convex plates that split into two separate plates as they approach the midline of the venter. This characteristic has not been described previously for this species or other, higher, dipterous larvae. There are two posterior spiracles with an ecdysial scar, four fan-shaped and branching spiracular hairs and irregularly-shaped spiracular openings. The longitudinal anal opening is situated in the cuticular band that is known as the anal organ.  相似文献

Lead remains one of the most hazardous metals in our environment. The concentrations of lead in coronal dentine and enamel have previously been reported but limited information is available regarding lead levels in radicular dentine and cementum. This study reports the distribution of lead in 26 roots of 16 human maxillary primary teeth from seven individuals. In addition, calcium and phosphorous concentrations were also measured to detect any variations in the degree of mineralization in different regions of the roots. The mean lead concentration in these roots was 1.67 +/- 1.43 microg/g, which is comparable to other studies. In all cases there were higher lead concentrations in the apices of non-resorbed roots of primary maxillary teeth relative to middle and cervical regions. The findings reported here are of potential significance during the process of physiological root resorption whence periapical tissue may be exposed to higher levels of lead.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00520.x The effect of long‐term disinfection procedures on hardness property of resin denture teeth Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of long‐term disinfection procedures on the Vickers hardness (VHN) of acrylic resin denture teeth. Material and methods: Five acrylic resin denture teeth (Vipi Dent Plus‐V, Trilux–T, Biolux‐B, Postaris‐P and Artiplus‐A) and one composite resin denture teeth (SR‐Orthosit‐O) were embedded in heat‐polymerised acrylic resin within polyvinylchloride tubes. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48 h. Measurements of hardness were taken after the following disinfection procedures: immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or in 1% sodium hypochlorite (CIm and HIm group, respectively) and seven daily cycles of microwave sterilisation at 650 W for 6 min (MwS group). In the WIm group, specimens were maintained in water during the time used to perform the disinfection procedures (7 days). Data were analysed with anova followed by the Bonferroni procedure (α = 0.01). Results: Microwave disinfection decreased the hardness of all acrylic resin denture teeth (p < 0.001). Immersion for 7 days in 4% chlorhexidine gluconate or distilled water had significant effect on the hardness of the acrylic resin denture teeth A (p < 0.01), and 1% sodium hypochlorite on teeth T (p < 0.01). All disinfection procedures decrease the hardness of the composite resin denture teeth (p < 0.01). Teeth O exhibited the highest and teeth V the lowest hardness values in the control group (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Disinfection procedures changed the hardness of resin denture teeth.  相似文献

Shape and age variation in dentition of Paleogene extinct native South American ungulates (Notoungulata) has been traditionally described using qualitative and quantitative approaches, and has played a controversial role in the systematics of several groups. Such is the case of the Notopithecidae, a group of notoungulates with low‐crowned teeth, known from the middle Eocene of Patagonia (Argentina). In this group, as well as in other contemporary families, extreme morphological changes associated to increasing dental wear were originally assumed to represent taxonomic differences; thus, dozens of species were erected, clearly reflecting the difficulty of defining discrete characters. In this contribution, a total of 89 upper molars and 91 lower molars were analyzed distributed in two factors, wear and species; three species of notopithecids were considered as study case, Notopithecus adapinus, Antepithecus brachystephanus, and Transpithecus obtentus, based on the large and well‐identified sample of upper and lower molars for each species. We have coupled geometric morphometric analyses with traditional comparative methods to get a better understanding and interpretation of both the changes in tooth shape contour and the link between shape and ontogeny. In addition, we evaluate the utility of this approach to identify which changes are strictly wear‐related and also test the qualitative characteristics used for diagnosing and differentiating notopithecid species. Our study yielded consistent results when applying independent geometric morphometric analyses on complex structures such as brachydont molar teeth. The landmark data is highly congruent with alternative sources of evidence, such as morphological studies using discrete characters. In notopithecid species, wear is the main factor affecting molar shape, followed by species (in lower molars) and allometry; in addition, lower teeth morphology is more definitive in separating species than upper molars, a fact that entails a key point for systematic studies of Paleogene brachydont notoungulates.  相似文献
