The tooth is a major component of the vertebrate feeding apparatus and plays a crucial role in species survival, thus subjecting tooth developmental programs to strong selective constraints. However, irrespective of their functional importance, teeth have been lost in multiple lineages of tetrapod vertebrates independently. To understand both the generality and the diversity of developmental mechanisms that cause tooth agenesis in tetrapods, we investigated expression patterns of a series of tooth developmental genes in the lower jaw of toothless turtles and compared them to that of toothed crocodiles and the chicken as a representative of toothless modern birds. In turtle embryos, we found impairment of Shh signaling in the oral epithelium and early‐stage arrest of odontoblast development caused by termination of Msx2 expression in the dental mesenchyme. Our data indicate that such changes underlie tooth agenesis in turtles and suggest that the mechanism that leads to early‐stage odontogenic arrest differs between birds and turtles. Our results demonstrate that the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate early‐stage arrest of tooth development are diverse in tetrapod lineages, and odontogenic developmental programs may respond to changes in upstream molecules similarly thereby evolving convergently with feeding morphology.  相似文献

Quantitative X-ray fluorescence imaging of sections of human teeth revealed an increased concentration of copper and zinc in carious regions of dentine compared with unaffected portions of the tooth. Higher-resolution images provided strong evidence that the copper was transported and localized mainly in the dentinal tubules. While similar levels of zinc were found in these areas and concentrated in the tubules, zinc was also more evident in the hydroxyapatite, and the increase in zinc levels compared with the levels in background (normal) areas was less than that for copper. These results suggest a role for copper and zinc in the formation and progression of dental caries and present a potential point of intervention for treatment. Developmental studies of brain volumes can reveal which portions of neural circuits are sensitive to environmental inputs. In social insects, differences in relative investment across brain regions emerge as behavioural repertoires change during ontogeny or as a result of experience. Here, we test the effects of maturation and social experience on morphological brain development in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps, focusing on brain regions involved in visual and olfactory processing. We find that mature wasps regardless of social experience have relatively larger brains than newly emerged wasps and this difference is driven by changes to mushroom body calyx and visual regions but not olfactory processing neuropils. Notably, social wasps invest more in the anterior optic tubercle (AOT), a visual glomerulus involved in colour and object processing in other taxa, relative to other visual integration centres the mushroom body calyces compared with aged socially naive wasps. Differences in developmental plasticity between visual and olfactory neuropil volumes are discussed in light of behavioural maturation in paper wasps, especially as it relates to social recognition. Previous research has shown that P. fuscatus need social experience to develop specialized visual processing of faces, which is used to individually recognize conspecifics. The present study suggests that the AOT is a candidate brain region that could mediate facial processing in this species.  相似文献

Craniofacial morphogenesis is a complex multi-step process that involves numerous biological processes to coordinate the growth, proliferation, migration, and subsequent differentiation of the cranial neural crest cells. Members of the Fibronectin Leucine-Rich Transmembrane (Flrt) gene family have been previously reported to be widely expressed in the developing embryo. We mapped the expression of Flrt2 and Flrt3 at critical stages of craniofacial development and found that, during early craniofacial development, Flrt2 was highly expressed initially in the cranial neural crest cells and Flrt3 in the midbrain. Later both genes were expressed in the developing pharyngeal region. Flrt2 expression predominated in the neural crest-derived mesenchyme in the medial aspect of the developing frontonasal region in close relationships with the expression of Fgfr2, Shh, and Msx1, three genes shown previously to play critical roles in craniofacial development. Flrt2 was also present in the vomero-nasal organ, mandibular primodia, and the posterior aspects of the unfused and fused secondary palatal shelves. Flrt3, however, had a more restrictive expression, being present in the mesenchyme underlying the ectoderm of the medial nasal process and in the mandibular primordium and in regions undergoing outgrowth, in a pattern that overlapped with Bmp4 expression. Both Flrt2 and Flrt3 were later found to be present at sites of epithelial–mesenchymal interactions such as the developing tooth buds, hair follicles, and eye. Together the data suggested important roles for Flrt2 and Flrt3 in mediating events such as NCC migration, chondrogenesis and epithelial–mesenchymal interactions during craniofacial development.  相似文献

Information on the development of teeth in seals is rare. In this study, histological details are presented from fetuses and several postnatal stages of the common seal (Phoca vitulina), showing that the deciduous teeth undergo a very rapid, short-term, and somewhat incomplete development. This means that the permanent dentition can and also has to ‚out-pace’ the deciduous dentition, because Phoca vitulina, contrary to fur seals, has a very short suckling period after which there is an abrupt change to normal feeding (crabs, fishes).  相似文献
