Brachypalpus (Brachypalpus) longifacies sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Eastern Asia (Russian Far East and Japan). It differs from other species of the nominative subgenus by several unusual characters, i.e. face in profile weakly convex dorsally and concave ventrally, antennae very elongated, and abdomen with reddish transversal maculae on 2nd tergum (male) or 2nd and 3rd terga (female). In laboratory dual-choice assays females of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, prefer for oviposition plants with roots damaged by conspecific larvae to undamaged controls. Cauliflower and kale plants were inoculated with root fly eggs (25 per plant) and the hatching larvae were allowed to feed on the roots for various periods of time (1–17 days). After 4 (cauliflower) or 5 (kale) days of larval feeding the oviposition preference was most pronounced and flies laid between 64% and 68% of their eggs near plants with damaged roots. Later, with increasing damage but fewer surviving, and thus actively feeding, larvae, the magnitude of the preference declined. The preference for plants already damaged by conspecific larvae may contribute to the previously observed aggregated distribution of D. radicum eggs in Brassica crop fields.Further experiments revealed that the sensory cues inducing this oviposition preference originate from the complex consisting of the damaged roots, the surrounding substrate (soil) and associated microbes, rather than from the aerial plant parts. In choice assays using the root-substrate complex of damaged and control plants (aerial parts removed), the observed preference for damaged roots was similar to that found for the entire plant but was more pronounced. The damaged roots alone, compared to control roots, received up to 72% (cauliflower) and 75% (kale) of the eggs. By contrast, surrogate leaves sprayed with methanolic leaf surface extracts from the most preferred plants which had been damaged were not discriminated from surrogate leaved sprayed with extracts of the respective control plants. Analysis of glucosinolate levels in methanolic leaf surface extracts revealed that root damage resulted in enhanced concentrations of indole-glucosinolates on the leaf surface in kale but not in cauliflower. Although indole-glucosinolates are oviposition stimulants for the cabbage root fly, the induced changes were apparently too small to influence oviposition behaviour.  相似文献

We used the stalk-eyed fly Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni to examine predictions made by condition-dependent handicap models of sexual selection. Condition was experimentally varied by manipulation of larval food availability. Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni is a highly dimorphic species exhibiting strong sexual selection, and the male sexual ornament (exaggerated eyespan) showed strong condition-dependent expression relative to the homologous trait in females and nonsexual traits. Male eyespan also showed a great increase in standardized variance under stress, unlike nonsexual traits. The inflated variance of the male ornament was primarily attributable to condition-dependent (but body-size-independent) increase in variance. Thus, evaluation of male eyespan allows females to gain additional information about male condition over and above that given by body size. These findings accord well with condition-dependent handicap models of sexual selection.  相似文献

The sex pheromone glands of Lutzomyia cruzi male sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were analyzed by cytochemical techniques. In adult males, the epithelium at the fourth abdominal tergite is modified into a glandular epithelium, with large columnar gland cells located side by side. The gland cell cytoplasm contains a large number of mitochondria and peroxisomes, the latter with positive (electron-dense) reaction for catalase, a typical peroxisomal enzyme marker. The gland cell cytoplasm also contains a central vacuolated area, with a large number of electron-lucent vacuoles, not limited by a unit membrane. In well-preserved preparations such vacuoles present a homogenous and slightly electron-dense content, typical of lipid droplets. Indeed, incubation of the tergites with imidazole-buffered osmium tetroxide (to detect lipids) resulted in positive reaction in these vacuoles, as well as in between the microvilli of the gland cells. Use of the osmium–potassium iodide (Os–KI) technique allowed to demonstrate the presence of several endoplasmic reticulum (ER) profiles, as expected in secretory cells. Our data suggest that ER, lipid droplets and peroxisomes are involved in the sand fly pheromone biosynthesis.  相似文献

Bactrocera ritsemai is a dacine fruit fly found in Indonesia. We report here the complete mitogenome of this fruit fly from Lombok, Indonesia determined by Illumina MiSeq sequencing and its phylogenetic relationship with its congeners and related tephritid taxa. The whole mitogenome of B. ritsemai had a total length of 15,927 bp, comprising 37 genes – 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) and 22 transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) genes – and a control region (D-loop). Of the PCGs, 6 (atp6, cob, cox2, cox3, nad4, nad4l) had ATG start codon, 4 (nad2, nad3, nad5, nad6) had ATT, and one each had ATA (nad1), GTG (atp8) and TCG (cox1). Seven PCGs (atp6, atp8, cox2, cox3, nad2, nad4l, nad6) had TAA stop codon, 3 (cob, nad3, nad4) had TAG, and 3 had incomplete stop codon (cox1 – TA; nad1, nad5 – T). The TΨC-loop of tRNA was absent in trnF while trnS1 lacked the DHU-loop. Phylogenetic analysis based on 15 mt-genes (13 PCGs + 2 rRNA genes) indicated B. ritsemai forming a sister group with B. umbrosa and the subgenus Bactrocera was monophyletic. The genera Bactrocera and Zeugodacus were monophyletic while the subfamilies Dacinae and Tephritinae were paraphyletic. A broader taxa sampling of the Tephritidae is needed to better elucidate the phylogenetics and systematics of the tribes and subfamilies of tephritid fruit flies.  相似文献

Summary We tested whether larval black flies actively control the positioning of their feeding appendages (labral fans), and if so, whether their posture represents a balance between the conflicting demands of drag and feeding. We compared the postures of live larvae with the postures of larvae killed by heat-shock in three different flow regimes in a laboratory experiment; we assumed that the postures of heat-killed larvae approximated a passive response to drag. The average height of the labral fans above the bed declined significantly in faster flows, and was significantly greater in live than dead larvae. There was also a significant interaction effect, since the difference between the fan heights of live and dead larvae was greater in slower flows. Two mechanisms may contribute to this result. Larvae in slower flows have to increase their fan heights more than larvae living in faster flows to achieve comparable increases in velocity and thus particle flux. In addition, muscular strength may limit the feeding postures larvae can assume. The fan heights of live larvae also varied depending on the concentration of food particles: larvae exposed to low food concentrations held their fans higher above the bed than did larvae exposed to high food concentrations in the same flow regime. This change in posture is due neither to an uneven particle concentration in the boundary layer nor to added drag from particles trapped in the labral fans. Collectively, our results indicate that these suspension feeders actively control their feeding posture, and suggest that these varying postures represent a dynamic balance between the conflicting needs of minimizing drag and maximizing feeding.  相似文献

Since October 2006, the US Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA–ARS) has been implementing a fruit fly liquid larval diet technology transfer, which has proceeded according to the following steps: (1) recruitment of interested groups through request; (2) establishment of the Material Transfer Agreement with agricultural research service; (3) fruit fly liquid larval diet starter kit sent to the requestor for preliminary evaluation; (4) problem‐solving through email or onsite demonstration; (5) assessment on feedback from the participants to decide whether to continue the project. Up to date, the project has involved 35 participants from 29 countries and 26 species of fruit flies. Fourteen participants have concluded their evaluation of the process, and 11 of these 14, have deemed it to be successful. One participant has decided to implement the project on a larger scale. The 14 participants were, Argentina (Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha fraterculus), Bangladesh (Bactrocera cucurbitae, C. capitata, and Bactrocera dorsalis), China (Fujia province) (B. dorsalis), Italy (C. capitata), Fiji (Bactrocera passiflorae), Kenya (Bactrocera invadens, Ceratitis cosyra), Mauritius (Bactrocera zonata and B. cucurbitae), Mexico (Anastrepha species), Philippines (Bactrocera philippinese), Thailand (Bactrocera correcta), Austria (C. capitata, Vienna 8 and A. fraterculus), Israel (Dacus ciliatus and C. capitata), South Africa (C. capitata, Vienna 8) and Australia (C. capitata). The Stellenbosch medfly mass‐rearing facility in South Africa and the CDFA in Hawaii were two mass‐scale rearing facilities that allowed us to demonstrate onsite rearing in a larger scale. Demonstrations were performed in CDFA in 2007, and in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2008; both were found to be successful. The Stellenbosch medfly mass‐rearing facility in South Africa decided to adopt the technology and is currently evaluating the quality control of the flies that were reared as larvae on a liquid diet.  相似文献

Tetrastichus giffardii Silvestri is a gregarious eulophid endoparasitoid of several tephritid fruit fly species. Host stage suitability was studied using nine age groups of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), namely, eggs less than 24 h and between 24 and 48 h old, and 1- to 7-day-old larvae. Life table studies for T. giffardii using C. capitata as host were done at 26 ± 5 °C and 55–60% RH. Egg load in relation to age of the female parasitoid was also assessed as was the effect of host deprivation on adult longevity. Host acceptance and suitability were examined with respect to eight species of tephritids. Potential hosts so tested were five Ceratitis species, the Medfly, C. capitata, the mango fruit fly, Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), the Natal fruit fly, Ceratitis rosa Karsch, Ceratitis fasciventris (Bezzi), and Ceratitis anonae Graham; two Bactrocera species, the melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) and the newly invasive Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta, and White; and one Dacus species, the lesser pumpkin fly, Dacus ciliatus Loew. No parasitoids were obtained from eggs while all larval stages were suitable though at varying degrees. Parasitism and number of progeny was related to host age in a curvilinear manner with maxima at 4- to 5-day-old larvae. By contrast, development time decreased with age of host larvae while sex ratio was not affected. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.17 ± 0.01; gross and net reproductive rates were 64.9 ± 4.3 and 44.9 ± 3.8, respectively. Non-ovipositing females lived significantly longer than ovipositing ones. The females accepted all host species tested, but only C. capitata, D. ciliatus and, to a much lesser extent, C. cosyra were suitable. In the remaining host species, most eggs were encapsulated. In C. capitata and D. ciliatus, percent parasitism was similar, but number of progeny was lower and the sex ratio, as the proportion of females, was higher when the parasitoid was reared on D. ciliatus. Progeny per puparium were also similar for the two hosts. In the light of these results it can be concluded that T. giffardii has a narrow host range, but it attacks and successfully develops in larvae representing a wide range of ages.  相似文献

Field studies in South Africa showed that floral spur length in the Disa draconis complex (Orchidaceae) varies enormously between populations in the southern mountains (means = 32–38 mm), lowland sandplain (mean = 48 mm), and northern mountains (means = 57–72 mm). We tested the hypothesis that divergence in spur length has resulted from selection exerted through pollinator proboscis length. Short-spurred plants in several southern mountain populations, as well as long-spurred plants in one northern mountain population, were pollinated by a horsefly, Philoliche rostrata (Tabanidae), with a proboscis length that varied from 22 to 35 mm among sites. Long-spurred plants on the sandplain were pollinated by the tanglewing fly, Moegistorynchus longirostris (Nemestrinidae), which has a very long proboscis (mean = 57 mm). Selection apparently favors long spurs in sandplain plants, as artificial shortening of spurs resulted in a significant decline in pollen receipt and fruit set, although pollinaria removal was not significantly affected. Fruit set in the study populations was limited by pollen availability, which further suggests that selection on spur length occurs mainly through the female component of reproductive success.  相似文献
