Seagrasses worldwide are noted for suffering from mechanical damage caused by boat anchoring. This is particularly so in sites highly frequented by boaters (marine protected areas or coastal urbanised areas). In the last decades, different strategies have been put into practice to reduce such impacts on seagrasses (i.e. by anchoring bans or by deploying boat moorings). More recently, in consideration that few marine protected area (MPA) management bodies or local administrations have the resources to enforce their anchorage regulations, the self-regulatory approach based on education and information of boaters has been preferred in several cases. At present, however, very little is known on the correct anchoring practices to ensure the safeguarding of seagrasses. The aim of the present study was to experimentally quantify in the field the damage caused to Posidonia oceanica shoot density by anchoring. A multifactorial experiment was designed to test whether the damage is dependent on (1) different anchor types (Hall, Danforth and Folding grapnel), (2) the use of a chain vs. a rope, (3) the three anchoring stages (anchor fall, dragging/lock-in and weighing), and finally (4) whether the pattern is consistent among different locations of the meadow.As expected, the three anchor types employed in the present study differed in the levels of damage inflicted on the P. oceanica meadows of the Ustica Island MPA. In particular, the use of the Hall type anchor seems to be preferable to minimise this impact in comparison with the other two anchor types. Moreover, the effect on the meadow of the three anchor types is greatly dependent on the anchoring stage. These results confirm that the weighing stage is the critical stage of the anchoring process. The number of damaged shoots of P. oceanica was not affected by the presence of the chain. These patterns were consistent between locations.In the long term, even anchoring on P. oceanica by small boats using low-impact anchors may potentially have detrimental consequences. For this reason, we suggest that in vulnerable sites, it is preferable to implement an educational program based on information of boaters on correct anchoring practices and anchor typology to use, rather than adopting strong restrictions to boat anchoring or deploying mooring buoys. A taxonomic survey was conducted to determine the microbial diversity held within the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Marine Microbial Culture Collection (HBMMCC). The collection consists of approximately 17,000 microbial isolates, with 11,000 from a depth of greater than 150 ft seawater. A total of 2273 heterotrophic bacterial isolates were inventoried using the DNA fingerprinting technique amplified rDNA restriction analysis on approximately 750-800 base pairs (bp) encompassing hypervariable regions in the 5' portion of the small subunit (SSU) 16S rRNA gene. Restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns obtained from restriction digests with RsaI, HaeIII, and HhaI were used to infer taxonomic similarity. SSU 16S rDNA fragments were sequenced from a total of 356 isolates for more definitive taxonomic analysis. Sequence results show that this subset of the HBMMCC contains 224 different phylotypes from six major bacterial clades (Proteobacteria (Alpha, Beta, Gamma), Cytophaga, Flavobacteria, and Bacteroides (CFB), Gram + high GC content, Gram + low GC content). The 2273 microorganisms surveyed encompass 834 alpha-Proteobacteria (representing 60 different phylotypes), 25 beta-Proteobacteria (3 phylotypes), 767 gamma-Proteobacteria (77 phylotypes), 122 CFB (17 phylotypes), 327 Gram + high GC content (43 phylotypes), and 198 Gram + low GC content isolates (24 phylotypes). Notably, 11 phylotypes were < or =93% similar to the closest sequence match in the GenBank database even after sequencing a larger portion of the 16S rRNA gene (approximately 1400 bp), indicating the likely discovery of novel microbial taxa. Furthermore, previously reported "uncultured" microbes, such as sponge-specific isolates, are part of the HBMMCC. The transferability of the tetracycline (TC) resistance gene tet(M) from marine bacteria to human enteric bacteria was examined by a filter-mating method. Vibrio spp., Lactococcus garvieae, Bacillus spp., Lactobacillus sp., and Paenibacillus sp. were used as donors, and Escherichia coli JM109 and Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 were used as recipients. The combination of Vibrio spp. and E. coli resulted in 5/68 positive transconjugants with a transfer rate of 10−7 to 10−3; however, no transfer was observed with E. faecalis. In case of L. garvieae and E. faecalis, 6/6 positive transconjugants were obtained with a transfer rate of 10−6 to 10−5; however, no transfer was observed with E. coli. The tet(M) gene of Bacillus, Lactobacillus, and Paenibacillus were not transferred to either E. coli or E. faecalis. tet(M) transfer was confirmed in positive E. coli and E. faecalis transconjugants by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern hybridization. All the donor strains did not harbor plasmids,
while they all harbored transposon Tn916. In the transconjugants, the transposon was not detected by PCR, suggesting the possible transfer of tet(M) from the marine bacterial chromosome to the recipient chromosome. Analysis of the sterol fraction obtained from the Colombian Caribbean sponge Topsentia ophiraphidites revealed that this sponge is a rich source of C30 and C31 sterols. Among them, a new C31 sterol, named ophirasterol, was isolated, and its structure was established as (22E,24R)-24-(1-buten-2-yl)cholesta-5,22-dien-3beta-ol (1) by spectral means and comparison with synthetic C-24 epimers with known configuration. Other isolated C30 and C31 sterols were the known 24-ethyl-24-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (2), 24-isopropyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (3), 24-isopropylcholesterol (4), 24-ethyl-24-methylcholesterol (5), 24-isopropenyl-25-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (6) and 24-isopropenyl-25-methylcholesterol (7), and 24-isopropenyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (8). 相似文献

To establish baseline data on the distribution, abundance and threats to marine turtles in Viet Nam we conducted surveys with
local fishers, community members and provincial Ministry of Fisheries staff from 17 of Viet Nam’s 29 coastal provinces. These
data indicate that five species of marine turtle reside in Viet Nam’s waters (loggerhead, olive ridley, leatherback, green
and hawksbill turtles), and four species nest on Viet Nam’s beaches (all of the above except the loggerhead turtle). It is
evident from these data that significant declines have occurred in both foraging and nesting populations of all five marine
turtle species found in Viet Nam. The greatest current threats to marine turtle populations in Viet Nam are habitat degradation,
the accidental and opportunistic of turtles capture by fishers and the direct take of nesting females and their eggs. Successful
conservation efforts have been made in recent years through collaboration between international Non Government Organisations
and several Vietnamese Government Ministries. Continued success of these projects and the development and implementation of
marine conservation policy will depend upon building awareness among Government employees, fishers and the general public

Sponges are well known to harbor diverse microbes and represent a significant source of bioactive natural compounds derived from the marine environment. Recent studies of the microbial communities of marine sponges have uncovered previously undescribed species and an array of new chemical compounds. In contrast to natural compounds, studies on enzymes with biotechnological potential from microbes associated with sponges are rare although enzymes with novel activities that have potential medical and biotechnological applications have been identified from sponges and microbes associated with sponges. Both bacteria and fungi have been isolated from a wide range of marine sponge, but the diversity and symbiotic relationship of bacteria has been studied to a greater extent than that of fungi isolated from sponges. Molecular methods (e.g., rDNA, DGGE, and FISH) have revealed a great diversity of the unculturable bacteria and archaea. Metagenomic approaches have identified interesting metabolic pathways responsible for the production of natural compounds and may provide a new avenue to explore the microbial diversity and biotechnological potential of marine sponges. In addition, other eukaryotic organisms such as diatoms and unicellular algae from marine sponges are also being described using these molecular techniques. Many natural compounds derived from sponges are suspected to be of bacterial origin, but only a few studies have provided convincing evidence for symbiotic producers in sponges. Microbes in sponges exist in different associations with sponges including the true symbiosis. Fungi derived from marine sponges represent the single most prolific source of diverse bioactive marine fungal compounds found to date. There is a developing interest in determining the true diversity of fungi present in marine sponges and the nature of the association. Molecular methods will allow scientists to more accurately identify fungal species and determine actual diversity of sponge-associated fungi. This is especially important as greater cooperation between bacteriologists, mycologists, natural product chemists, and bioengineers is needed to provide a well-coordinated effort in studying the diversity, ecology, physiology, and association between bacteria, fungi, and other organisms present in marine sponges. 相似文献

Ecotourism is becoming very popular, especially in protected areas where wildlife concentrate and is easier to observe, but
the consequences of associated disturbance have seldom be quantified other than in the short-term, making the sustainability
of this activity untested. We combined a historical, an empirical and an experimental approach to assess the long-, medium-
and short-term consequences of disturbance to wintering wildfowl (Anatidae) in a wetland of international importance in the Camargue, Southern France. In the short-term, disturbance made teal (Anas crecca) move away temporarily from observation blinds without leaving the waterbody. Wildfowl fed more after disturbance, disrupting
their normal resting activities. In the medium-term, waterbodies with more tourists did not host fewer birds: conversely the
most heavily disturbed one hosted the highest wildfowl density. In the long term, wildfowl numbers were not related with the
number of visitors. When practiced with appropriate guiding of people, and where appropriate facilities are provided to limit
human disturbance as done here, ecotourism may not affect wintering wildfowl other than reversibly in the very short term.
The legitimate demand of the public for access, even in fragile protected areas, may therefore be sustainable under some conditions. 相似文献

The establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) for cetaceans is an important strategy to mitigate human disturbance and protect biodiversity. Despite abundant cetacean species, there are only a few MPAs dedicated to cetacean conservation in China, all of which are for inshore dolphins. Bryde's whales, the only nearshore baleen whale population in mainland China, are conflicting with intensive human activities, yet an effective conservation strategy is lacking. This study used species distribution models to analyze distribution patterns and suitable habitats of Bryde's whales in the Beibu Gulf and proposes the first baleen whale MPA in China. Our results showed Bryde's whales have a seasonal distribution pattern in the Beibu Gulf, and that the waters around Weizhou Island and the southeastern coast of Vietnam were their core habitats. The seasonal nighttime light data indicated a negative relationship between the number of ship lights and Bryde's whale sightings and suggest that Bryde's whales might be threatened by fisheries. We proposed an MPA based on the results, suggesting that the waters within 20 km around Weizhou Island should be declared a protected area. Furthermore, we recommend that anthropogenic activities in the waters around Weizhou Island are better managed to reduce negative impacts on marine life. 相似文献

Fire is a key driver in savannah systems and widely used as a land management tool. Intensifying human land uses are leading to rapid changes in the fire regimes, with consequences for ecosystem functioning and composition. We undertake a novel analysis describing spatial patterns in the fire regime of the Serengeti‐Mara ecosystem, document multidecadal temporal changes and investigate the factors underlying these patterns. We used MODIS active fire and burned area products from 2001 to 2014 to identify individual fires; summarizing four characteristics for each detected fire: size, ignition date, time since last fire and radiative power. Using satellite imagery, we estimated the rate of change in the density of livestock bomas as a proxy for livestock density. We used these metrics to model drivers of variation in the four fire characteristics, as well as total number of fires and total area burned. Fires in the Serengeti‐Mara show high spatial variability—with number of fires and ignition date mirroring mean annual precipitation. The short‐term effect of rainfall decreases fire size and intensity but cumulative rainfall over several years leads to increased standing grass biomass and fuel loads, and, therefore, in larger and hotter fires. Our study reveals dramatic changes over time, with a reduction in total number of fires and total area burned, to the point where some areas now experience virtually no fire. We suggest that increasing livestock numbers are driving this decline, presumably by inhibiting fire spread. These temporal patterns are part of a global decline in total area burned, especially in savannahs, and we caution that ecosystem functioning may have been compromised. Land managers and policy formulators need to factor in rapid fire regime modifications to achieve management objectives and maintain the ecological function of savannah ecosystems. 相似文献
