The Interlake region of central Manitoba is characterized by numerous shallow, relatively unproductive wetlands. Typically, these wetlands are poorly utilized by breeding waterfowl in spite of generally reliable water conditions during spring and summer. Nutrient additions were made throughout the growing season to 18 PVC enclosures installed in a low productivity wetland near Lundar, Manitoba. Inorganic phosphorus (as H3PO4) and nitrogen (as NH4NO3) were added at bi-weekly intervals during the summer of 1988 at target rates of 0 and 0, 30 and 800, and 60 and 1600 µg 1–1 (P and N respectively). Algal and invertebrate communities were monitored from mid-June to September, 1988. Phytoplankton, epiphytic periphyton and metaphyton communities demonstrated significant increases in biomass over the treatment period. No significant differences in epipelon community biomass were noted. An examination of several indicators of nutrient deficiency indicated that algal productivity was moderately to severely limited in all enclosures, with little or no mitigative effects noted due to nutrient addition treatment. No significant differences in numbers or biomass of total invertebrates or invertebrate functional groups attributed to fertilization were observed. Nutrient additions did increase community productivity, however the levels used in this study were insufficient to yield a sustained increase in primary or secondary productivity.  相似文献

Aim The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify episodes of establishment and mortality of young and mature trees at several sites at the alpine tree line in the western Northwest Territories and the latitudinal tree line in northern Manitoba; (2) infer changes in the structure and location of the tree line from patterns of establishment; (3) evaluate any relationship between these changes and climate; and (4) investigate sources of variability between sampling sites and study areas. Location Taiga Cordillera of the western Mackenzie Mountains in the Northwest Territories, and the western Hudson Bay Lowlands in northern Manitoba, Canada. Methods Recent tree line dynamics were examined at six climatically similar sites: three in the western Mackenzie Mountains and three around Churchill, Manitoba. Dendroecological techniques were employed to construct static age distributions of species present at each site. Static age structures, residuals from modelled age distributions, and reconstructions of dynamic stand density were used to identify patterns of establishment and mortality and to compare these to changes in climate. Results Tree line locations advanced and stand density increased during the early‐to‐mid‐20th century around Churchill, although responses were not uniform across sites or species. Results were less conclusive in the Mackenzie Mountains, although the tree line probably advanced during the late 18th century, and stand infilling occurred during the mid‐20th century. Correlation analyses with temperature suggest that conditions during establishment and particularly during recruitment are crucial for controlling tree line dynamics. Main conclusions Tree line advance and stand infilling have continued to the present at Churchill, while the tree line has stagnated in the western Mackenzie Mountains. The results of this study indicate that site‐ and species‐specific responses play a large role in determining the tree line response at multiple scales, illustrating the complexity of tree line dynamics in the context of a changing climate.  相似文献

Accurate information on animal body mass is often an essential component of wildlife research and management. However, for many large-bodied species, obtaining direct scale weights from individuals may be difficult. In these cases, morphometric equations (e.g., based on girth or length) may provide accurate and precise estimates of body mass. We developed predictive equations to estimate the body mass of free-ranging polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in western Hudson Bay, Canada. Using multiple linear and non-linear regression, we identified a strong relationship between polar bear body weight and linear measures of straight line length and axillary girth. The mass–morphometry relationship appeared to change over time and we developed separate equations for polar bears measured during 2 time periods, 1980–1996 and 2007–2009. Non-linear models were more accurate and provided body mass estimates within 5.8% (R2 = 0.98) and 6.1% (R2 = 0.98) of scale weight in the earlier and later time periods, respectively. Earlier equations developed for polar bears in this subpopulation performed poorly when applied to recently sampled individuals. In contrast, some contemporary equations from other regions performed reasonably well, suggesting that temporal changes within a subpopulation may be more pronounced than regional differences and can render earlier predictive equations obsolete. Our results have important implications for current and future studies of polar bear body condition and the effects of ongoing climate warming. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) is a widespread, obligate brood parasite of North American passerine birds. In southern Manitoba, where hosts are sympatric with cowbirds, American robins (Turdus migratorius) ejected parasitic eggs from all experimentally parasitized clutches (N = 25) and no eggs were accepted for more than four days. In contrast, robins in northern Manitoba, an area where cowbirds do not breed, accepted parasitic eggs in 33% of nests (N = 18) for at least five days. Acceptance of experimental cowbird eggs by a second host, the yellow warbler (Dendroica petechia), was similar in allopatric (100% of 20 nests) and sympatric (88.6% of 35 nests) populations, but models of a female cowbird elicited greater nest defense by warblers in the area of sympatry. Neither host rejected eggs of conspecifics, thus, rejection of cowbird eggs was not an epiphenomenon of conspecific brood parasitism. These results support the hypothesis that recognition of cowbirds and their eggs evolved as adaptations to counter cowbird parasitism and not some other selection pressure. The expression of anti-parasite defenses by some individuals within allopatric populations further suggests these traits may be controlled genetically but persist in such areas either through the continued introgression of rejecter genes from sympatric populations or because of the low cost of rejection behavior when parasitism is absent or rare.  相似文献

Human mononuclear cells stimulated with soluble IgG aggregates generated chemiluminescence, a response attributable to monocytes. Some requirements of this reaction were examined by preincubation of the cells with a variety of inhibitors. The protease antagonists TPCK and TLCK, the phospholipase inhibitors quinacrine and BPB, and the calcium channel blocker verapamil were all inhibitory at micromolar concentrations. The oxygen metabolite scavengers SOD and catalase were less inhibitory. These findings are consistent with a major role for arachidonic acid metabolites in the generation of light. Modulation of monocyte Fc-mediated chemiluminescence also occurred by preincubation of the cells with Fc ligands. While IgG aggregates and monomeric IgG blocked Fc-dependent chemiluminescence, IgG Fc fragments were stimulatory of this response.  相似文献

The specialized cell types and two distinct regions of the adult Rhodnius prolixus cement gland develop from a simple pseudostratified epithelial tube during the 20–22 days of the fifth stadium. Feeding initiates the first phase, proliferation. Cells round up and divide tangentially to the lumen. Following the proliferation phase, differentiative mitoses occur and differentiation, resulting in secretory units (consisting of a ductule, gland cell and cuticular lining), ensues in the distal region. Ductule morphogenesis occurs without pseudocilia, thus differing from other insect glands. The complex changes in cell shape and interaction occur during development of the secretory unit. The secretory cell and end-apparatus develop from a double cell unit at the base of elongating ductules. The inner cell produces a complex end-apparatus of epicuticle that mirrors the microvillar pattern and then it degenerates. The ductules are lined by cuticulin and inner epicuticle while the central gland lumen has a layer of endocuticle as well. The epithelium of the proximal region remains simple producing the thick corrugated cuticle characteristic of the adult secretory duct. The mesodermal covering forms a thick longitudinal striated muscle layer that adheres to the epithelium via desmosomes.  相似文献

Physiological heme degradation is mediated by the heme oxygenase system consisting of heme oxygenase and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase. Biliverdin IX alpha is formed by elimination of one methene bridge carbon atom as CO. Purified NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase alone will also degrade heme but biliverdin is a minor product (15%). The enzymatic mechanisms of heme degradation in the presence and absence of heme oxygenase were compared by analyzing the recovery of 14CO from the degradation of [14C]heme. 14CO recovery from purified NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase-catalyzed degradation of [14C]methemalbumin was 15% of the predicted value for one molecule of CO liberated per mole of heme degraded. 14CO2 and [14C]formic acid were formed in amounts (18 and 98%, respectively), suggesting oxidative cleavage of more than one methene bridge per heme degraded, similar to heme degradation by hydrogen peroxide. The reaction was strongly inhibited by catalase, but superoxide dismutase had no effect. [14C]Heme degradation by the reconstituted heme oxygenase system yielded 33% 14CO. Near-stoichiometric recovery of 14CO was achieved after addition of catalase to eliminate side reactions. Near-quantitative recovery of 14CO was also achieved using spleen microsomal preparations. Heme degradation by purified NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase appeared to be mediated by hydrogen peroxide. The major products were not bile pigments, and only small amounts of CO were formed. The presence of heme oxygenase, and possibly an intact membrane structure, were essential for efficient heme degradation to bile pigments, possibly by protecting the heme from indiscriminate attack by active oxygen species.  相似文献
