Humans have favored the presence of Ficus species within anthropogenic landscapes and near human settlements throughout the planet due to a number of beliefs and for practical purposes. An intimate or mutualistic relationship between Ficus spp and human societies has been suggested but explanations about the motivations of these proximities between humans and Ficus remain very fragmentary. The case study presented in this paper, which was conducted in the sacred hills located in the surroundings of an urban area, Antananarivo, capital city of Madagascar, inhabited by the Merina, aims at finding some answers to the following two questions. To what extent are Ficus species integrated into the ecologies of human groups, understood here as interactions between humans (social, political and economic dimensions)? 2) Do humans introduce Ficus species into new habitats, potentially offering new ecological opportunities? This study builds on initial work conducted in Madagascar in the region of Fianarantsoa in Betsileo rural communities. Results shown in this paper suggest that: 1) the kings of Imerina, the region located in the north-eastern part of the High Plateau of Madagascar, have planted Ficus species abundantly, especially Ficus lutea Vahl and Ficus. polita Vahl, to claim ownership upon new territories of the Imerina and symbolically establish their political hegemony. Marriages with women from non-Merina cultural groups, such as the Sakalava inhabiting the Western Coast, and the use of Ficus species as symbols of power has contributed, with other activities, to the unification process of Madagascar; 2) The ecological distribution of F. lutea has been substantially manipulated by people from Imerina by planting this species quite abundantly in the sacred hills surrounding Antananarivo, an area where this species is at its ecological limit of distribution and also in faraway places such as the Western coast where the tree is not naturally distributed.  相似文献

In August 1992 an aye-aye Daubentonia madagascariensis (Primates) was bred in captivity for the first time. This species is the only living representative of a monotypic family and is endangered in its native Madagascar. A brief history of the captive breeding effort and a summary of the conservation problems facing the fauna, flora, and people of Madagascar is given. The role that a captive breeding programme for aye-ayes can fulfil as an aid to preserving biodiversity is discussed.  相似文献

Fourteen cyclostomatous Bryozoa from theMajunga Basin, Madagascar, are described. Seven of these (Diastopora madagascarensis, Pustulopora bonamaryi, Filisparsa majungensis, Canalipora cylindrica, Idmidronea bombetokensis, Pseudotervia delicatula, Lichenopora betsibokensis) are new. One new genus, Serpentipora, is described.Eleven cyclostomatous species are found in the Maestrichtian. Four of these occur also in Europe. Eight species are found in the Paleocene. Two of these occur also in Europe. The bryozoan fauna is composed of thin, delicate, erectly growing species, which suggests that the Bryozoa have probably lived in a moderately deep water, approximately 100–200 m deep.  相似文献

Detailed knowledge of the identity and distributions of extant species is essential for unravelling patterns and mechanisms of biodiversity, and it provides indispensable baseline data for conservation efforts. The taxonomy of the primates of Madagascar (Lemuriformes) has experienced drastic revisions in the last decades, with species numbers skyrocketing, especially in the genera Microcebus, Avahi, and Lepilemur. The dwarf lemurs (genus Cheirogaleus) have received less attention in terms of their taxonomy, even though they are closely related and syntopic with these diverse genera. The last revision of the genus was based on morphological data from museum specimens, and accepted seven species: Cheirogaleus medius, Cheirogaleus major, Cheirogaleus crossleyi, Cheirogaleus adipicaudatus, Cheirogaleus sibreei, Cheirogaleus ravus, and Cheirogaleus minusculus, whereas a more recent multilocus molecular study only detected three lineages: C. medius, C. major, and C. crossleyi. The goal of this study was to reassess the currently accepted taxonomy of the genus by examining six external and 32 craniodental characters of 120 museum specimens and 36 new specimens from the field. This study, in conjunction with a complementary molecular study, revealed lower diversity and a lower number of distinct morphs of dwarf lemurs than previously postulated. We conclude that in our sample there are three distinct morphs in the genus Cheirogaleus that correspond to C. medius, C. major, and C. crossleyi. We formally recognize C. adipicaudatus and C. ravus as synonyms of C. medius and C. major, respectively, and consider C. minusculus and C. sibreei to be potential synonyms of C. medius. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010.  相似文献

Anthecological relations between a long-spurred angraecoid orchid and pollinating Sphingidae are documented for the first time. In a primary forest on the Central Plateau of Madagascar Angraecum arachnites Schltr. was found to be pollinated by and adapted to a single species of hawk-moth, Panogena lingens (Butler), despite abundance of many concurrent Sphingidae of which several were also long-tongued. Furthermore, P. lingens was dimorphic in the length and breadth of its proboscis and only the morph with the longest and most slender proboscis was recorded to pollinate A. arachnites . Exclusive and precise adaptation to the latter morph of P. lingens existed in floral morphology and probably in other characteristics such as flowering phenology and chemical signalling. Several concurrently flowering orchid species were sharing P. lingens as a pollinator resource. The monophily in A. arachnites is interpreted as a result of a refined long-term specialization developed within an archaic evolutionary relationship in a relatively stable environment. The extraordinary number and diversity of long-spurred Orchidaceae in Madagascar appears to be a direct coevolutionary consequence of an Old-World-unique diversity of long-tongued archaic Sphingidae that has persisted in this isolated land.  相似文献

The cranial morphology of Lemur catta and of the five species of the genus Eulemur is investigated here by landmark identification and Procrustes superimpositions. This geometrical morphometric method makes it possible to describe pure shape differences independent of size effects, and to quantify differences between specimens. The aim of this study is to determine whether the morphological disparity of lemur skulls is constrained by the environment and/or by the group's phylogenetic history. First, Procrustes residuals are analysed by principal component analysis and the scatter-plots interpreted against the geographical distributions of taxa to determine whether morphology is correlated with geography. Then, a morphological distance tree is computed and compared with various cladograms reported in the literature to test for any correlation between morphology and phylogeny. Morphological disparity is found to be closely correlated with geographical distribution but independent of phylogeny. This confirms that the morphological disparity of lemur skulls is associated with a high degree of homoplasy, probably as a result of ecological constraints.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 76 , 577–590.  相似文献

Culex antennatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Anopheles coustani (Diptera: Culicidae) and Anopheles squamosus/cydippis were found to be infected with Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) during an epidemic that occurred in 2008 and 2009 in Madagascar. To understand the roles played by Cx. antennatus and An. coustani in virus maintenance and transmission, RVFV vector competence was assessed in each species. Mosquito body parts and saliva of mosquitoes that fed on RVFV‐infected blood were tested for RVFV using real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR) assays. Overall, viral RNA was detected in body parts and saliva at 5 days post‐infection (d.p.i.) in both species. At 5 d.p.i., infection rates were 12.5% (3/24) and 15.8% (6/38), disseminated infection rates were 100% (3/3) and 100% (6/6), transmission rates were 33.3% (1/3) and 83.3% (5/6), and transmission efficiencies were 4.2% (1/24) and 13.2% (5/38) in Cx. antennatus and An. coustani, respectively. Although RVFV detected in saliva did not propagate on to Vero cells, these results support potential roles for these two mosquito species in the transmission of RVFV.  相似文献

I studied the insulation capacity of tree holes used by gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) in a primary dry deciduous forest in western Madagascar during the cool dry season. Tree holes had an insulating effect, and fluctuations of air temperatures were less extreme inside the holes than outside them. The insulation capacity of the tree holes peaked between 0800 and 1100 hr, when ambient temperatures ranged between 25 and 30°C. To compare tree holes, I calculated the mean difference between the internal temperature )(Ti ) and the external temperature (Te ) for each tree hole. Thus large differences indicate good insulation capacities. The mean difference of tree holes in living trees was significantly larger than that of tree holes in dead trees, which shows that insulation in living trees is more effective. During the dry season, the insulation capacity of tree holes in living trees decreased and was lowest in July, whereas the insulation capacity of holes in dead trees remained approximately constant. Physiological studies under natural temperature and light condition in Microcebus murinus reveal that daily torpor saves around 40% of the daily energy expenditure compared to normothermia. However, torpor can be maintained only up to the threshold body and ambient temperature of 28°C, whereat Microcebus murinus have to terminate torpor actively. By occupying insulating tree holes, mouse lemurs may stay longer in torpor, which increases their daily energy savings by an extra 5%.  相似文献

We monitored the productivity of the critically endangered Madagascar Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vociferoides inside and outside of the Tsimembo-Manambolomaty Protected Area (T-M PA), western Madagascar from 2010 to 2015. We recorded 14 breeding pairs inside and 13 outside T-M PA. The T-M PA and surrounding habitat hosted respectively 10 and six breeding polyandrous pairs, composed of one adult female and two adult males. During the six-year study period, 101 eggs were laid in nests in T-M PA of which 60 hatched and 58 young fledged. We recorded 62 eggs laid in nests outside the T-M PA of which 39 hatched and 36 young fledged. Productivity was similar at both sites, inside and outside T-M PA, with 0.84 (58/69) and 0.76 (36/47) fledgling per nesting attempt and 0.69 (58/84) and 0.5 (36/72) fledglings per territorial pair, respectively. Polyandrous pairs have higher productivity compared with normal pairs. Threats to Madagascar Fish Eagles and their habitat were low due to the existence of a community-based resource management system called the Local Management Secured System (GELOSE) inside and outside the T-M PA. This system is based on strengthening local traditional customs and rules, and involving local people in managing their natural resources sustainably along with biodiversity conservation.  相似文献
