Nuclear DNA amounts in Macaronesian angiosperms   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Nuclear DNA contents for 104 Macaronesian angiosperms, with particular attention on Canary Islands endemics, were analysed using propidium iodide flow cytometry. Prime estimates for more than one-sixth of the whole Canarian endemic flora (including representatives of 11 endemic genera) were obtained. The resulting 1C DNA values ranged from 0.19 to 7.21 pg for Descurainia bourgeauana and Argyranthemum frutescens, respectively (about 38-fold difference). The majority of species, however, possessed (very) small genomes, with C-values <1.6 pg. The tendency towards small nuclear DNA contents and genome sizes was confirmed by comparing average values for Macaronesian and non-Macaronesian representatives of individual families, genera and major phylogenetic lineages. Our data support the hypothesis that the insular selection pressures in Macaronesia favour small C-values and genome sizes. Both positive and negative correlations between infrageneric nuclear DNA amount variation and environmental conditions on Tenerife were also found in several genera.  相似文献

The Water Framework Directive or WFD constitutes a major step forward in the protection of the aquatic environment and associated habitats, since it legislates for the characterization of surface water bodies across defined ecoregions and the development of ecological monitoring systems based upon elements of the aquatic biota. The Macaronesian archipelagos include the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. The peripheral situation of the Macaronesian islands has set them apart from many European initiatives concerning the implementation of the WFD, which is biased towards better known continental systems. As a result, they have been included in the same ecoregion as the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands for management purposes. However, because of their oceanic situation and volcanic origin, the freshwater systems of the Macaronesian islands differ strongly from continental systems in watershed morphology and the composition of the biotic assemblages, which merits separate identification rather than inclusion within the larger Iberic-Macaronesian ecoregion and special attention concerning regional implementation of programmes of measures under the Directive.This paper has not been submitted elsewhere in identical or similar form, nor will it be during the first three months after its submission to Hydrobiologia.  相似文献

Genome sizes for 127 Macaronesian endemic angiosperms from 69 genera and 32 families were estimated using propidium iodide flow cytometry. Only about 30-fold variation in 1C-values was found, ranging from 0.32 pg in Echium bonnetii to 9.52 pg in Scilla dasyantha. Taxa with very small DNA amounts (1C 1.4 pg) were the most dominant group (71.7%), whereas the frequency of other categories was much lower (18.9% and 9.4% in taxa with small (1.41–3.50 pg) and intermediate 1C-values (3.51–14.00 pg), respectively). Comparisons of average C- and Cx-values between Macaronesian endemics and non-Macaronesian representatives always revealed significantly smaller amounts in the former group at various taxonomic levels (genus, family, major phylogenetic lineage). Potential relationship between nuclear DNA content and insular burst of speciation is suggested owing to the marked prevalence of very small genomes among angiosperms that underwent rapid adaptive radiation. Merging all the genome size data on Macaronesian angiosperms available shows that this flora represents the best covered plant assemblage from the phytogeographic point of view.  相似文献

Biology of the Macaronesian endemic rockling Gaidropsarus guttatus was studied in the Azores. The overall sex ratio from the samples was highly in favour of females (1 : 6·33). The growth parameters were L  = 24·23, k  = 1·219 and t 0 = −0·059. Fish matured at 15 cm L T and the spawning season was strongly clustered in April.  相似文献

Many studies have addressed evolution and phylogeography of plant taxa in oceanic islands, but have primarily focused on endemics because of the assumption that in widespread taxa the absence of morphological differentiation between island and mainland populations is due to recent colonization. In this paper, we studied the phylogeography of Scrophularia arguta, a widespread annual species, in an attempt to determine the number and spatiotemporal origins of dispersal events to Canary Islands. Four different regions, ITS and ETS from nDNA and psbA‐trnH and psbJ‐petA from cpDNA, were used to date divergence events within S. arguta lineages and determine the phylogenetic relationships among populations. A haplotype network was obtained to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among haplotypes. Our results support an ancient origin of S. arguta (Miocene) with expansion and genetic differentiation in the Pliocene coinciding with the aridification of northern Africa and the formation of the Mediterranean climate. Indeed, results indicate for Canary Islands three different events of colonization, including two ancient events that probably happened in the Pliocene and have originated the genetically most divergent populations into this species and, interestingly, a recent third event of colonization of Gran Canaria from mainland instead from the closest islands (Tenerife or Fuerteventura). In spite of the great genetic divergence among populations, it has not implied any morphological variation. Our work highlights the importance of nonendemic species to the genetic richness and conservation of island flora and the significance of the island populations of widespread taxa in the global biodiversity.  相似文献

The arborescent taxa of Dracaena which form the dragon tree group comprise five species found in Macaronesia, Morocco (D. draco), East Africa (D. ombet, D. schizantha), Arabia (D. serrulata) and the island of Socotra (D. cinnabari). A new species of dragon tree, Dracaena tamaranae A. Marrero, R. S. Almeida & M. Gonzalez-Martin, is described from Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. This new species differs from D. draco, the only other Dracaena species currently known in Macaronesia, in having a growth form and inflorescence type and leaves more similar to the East African and Arabian species of Dracaena. In contrast, D. draco appears to be related to D. cinnabari. In this paper, we also present a study of the taxonomy, habitat and ecology of all the species of the dragon tree group. These are found in thermo-sclerophyllous plant communities of tropical-subtropical regions which are rather xerophilous and have a rainfall range of 200–500 mm. Our study indicates two independent colonization events for Dracaena in Macaronesia. In addition, we suggest that the dragon tree group provides an example of two major biogeographical disjunctions between East and West Africa. We postulate that this group has a Tethyan origin, a hypothesis supported by fossil and palaeoclimatic data, and thus parallels the distribution and dispersal pattern of other taxonomic groups.  相似文献

In the present study we undertook an integrative approach, using both morphological and molecular data (COI-5P + rbcL), to assess the presence of Laurencia pyramidalis in Lusitanian Macaronesia. We studied type material of L. pyramidalis from the herbarium of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Netherlands, and designated a lectotype and syntypes. Vegetative and reproductive features of L. pyramidalis were observed and we included a specimen from the type locality in our molecular analyses. We also investigated the geographical distribution of Laurenciella marilzae, a species recently described from the Canary Islands. Barcode sequences (COI-5P and rbcL) were generated for L. pyramidalis from the type locality (Normandy, France), the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, and for L. marilzae from its type locality (Tenerife, Canary Islands), the Azores and Brazil.  相似文献

Aim The heather Erica arborea L. is a dominant element of the circum‐Mediterranean region. Its broad, disjunct distribution, ranging from Macaronesia to eastern Africa, is consistent with the fragmentation of the evergreen tropical and subtropical forests that dominated Europe and North Africa in the Tertiary. This study aims to investigate phylogeographical patterns in E. arborea and to determine whether the current disjunct distribution of the species is a relict of a once wider distribution, or a recent range expansion in response to the establishment of suitable conditions. Location Mediterranean, Macaronesia, North and eastern Africa. Methods A total of 105 samples were collected across the species’ distribution range and sequenced at four cpDNA loci (atpB–rbcL, matK, trnH–psbA and rpl16). Phylogenetic reconstructions, molecular dating techniques and Bayesian ancestral area reconstructions were used in combination with population genetic statistics (haplotype diversity, NST, FST, Fu’s FS) to describe the pattern of present genetic diversity in E. arborea and infer its biogeographical history. Results Haplotype diversity in Macaronesia and the east and central Mediterranean is much lower than that observed in eastern Africa/Arabia and the western Mediterranean. Bayesian ancestral area reconstructions and molecular dating suggest that E. arborea colonized the Mediterranean westwards from eastern Africa/Arabia at least twice during a time period ranging between the upper Miocene and the upper Pleistocene. Main conclusions The phylogeography of E. arborea involves a complex history of range expansions and contractions, which has resulted in a pattern of distribution that mimics that expected for a Tertiary vicariance event. Despite the presence of a late Tertiary refugium in the Iberian Peninsula, the current distribution of the species throughout the Mediterranean is explained by a Pleistocene expansion originating from eastern Africa. One explanation for the isolation of the Iberian refugium is the rapidity of the most recently identified colonization wave, as inferred by the absence of global phylogeographical signal in the data and significantly negative values of Fu’s FS statistic for European populations. Macaronesia was colonized during each of these two expansion waves, confirming that the laurisilva (laurel forest flora) is a complex entity including both ancient relicts and recent colonizers.  相似文献
