It is recognised that more research is needed on ecology of rare intertidal invertebrates to understand their ecological functions and aid their conservation. An example is chitons which are specialists of under-boulder habitat. Little is known about their interactions with the environment or other species, including spirorbid tubeworms which can co-occur in great abundances. This study describes for the first time a distinct pattern of spirorbid-tube fouling across the surfaces of chiton shells, and a similar pattern involving black staining of chitons from anoxic conditions. Posterior valves had 2–5 times as much fouling compared to anterior valves. This may have been caused by forward movement of chitons abrading away the anterior fouling. But signs of wear on shells that are caused by abrasion were also measured, and these were homogenous across the shell surface, suggesting abrasion does not cause the fouling pattern. I found five individuals of Cryptoplax striata (Lamarck, 1819) which were stained black by anoxic iron monosulphides, and the stained area was more than 10 times greater on posteriors than anteriors. These patterns may provide clues about interactions of chitons with fouling species, or about the types of microhabitats where chitons predominantly position different parts of their bodies. 相似文献

This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the taxonomy of the genus Ostreopsis Schmidt. The morphology of six species of marine dinoflagellates, Ostreopsis siamensis Schmidt 1902. Ostreopsis lenticularis Fukuyo 1981, Ostreopsis ovata Fukuyo 1981, Ostreopsis heptagona Norris, Bomber, et Balech 1985, Ostreopsis mascarenensis Quod 1994, and Ostreopsis labens Faust et Morton 1995 from three geographical regions (Japan, Southwest Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean) and three marine habitats (sand, water column, and macroalgal surfaces) are described from scanning electron micrographs. Differences in the following morphological characteristics differentiated the species: cell shape and size, and ornamentation of the epitheca, cingulum, and hypotheca. The thecal plate formula of the six Ostreopsis species is Po, 3′, 7″, 6C, 6S?, Vp, Rp, 5′″, 1p, 2″″, with differences in thecal plate size and shape. The cingulum in ventral view has two prominent structures: a ventral plate (Vp) with a ventral pore (Vo) and a ridged plate (Rp) that distinguishes Ostreopsis species from any other dinoflagellate taxa. This paper also includes ecological and toxicity information regarding the six Ostreopsis species. 相似文献

A new species, Ostreopsis labens Faust et Morton sp. nov., is described from three marine habitats: lagoonal water and lagoonal sand from the barrier reef of Belize, and associated with macroalgae from coral reef habitats of Oshigaki and Iriomote Islands, Japan. Dimensions of Ostreopsis labens cells are 60–86 μm long, 70–80 μm wide, and 81–110 μm in dorsoventral depth. Cells are broadly ovoid, anterioposteriorly compressed bearing a spherical nucleus and many chloroplasts. The epitheca is convex and composed of three apical plates, seven precingular plates, and an apical pore plate. The cingulum is composed of six plates. The hypotheca is constructed of five postcingular plates, one posterior intercalary, and two antapical plates. The sulcus is small, recessed, and hidden and exhibits a ventral pore and a ridged, curved plate. The thecal arrangement of O. labens is Po, 3′, 7″ 6C, 6S(?), Vp, Rp, 5″, 1p, 2″. Only one sulcal list is present. The thecal plates have a smooth surface with distinct round pores. The intercalary band between the thecal plates is smooth. A row of marginal pores line the lipped cingulum. Ostreopsis species are anteroposteriorly flattened, photosynthetic, benthic dinoflagellates that are more diverse in ecology than previously known. Ostreopsis labens is capable of living in three marine habitats: in the water column, in sand, and on macroalgal surfaces. It was most numerous in sand and less in lagoonal waters, and only a few cells were associated with macroalgae. Light and scanning electron microscopy studies revealed engulfed cells within O. labens, which indicates mixotrophic/phagotrophic behavior. A ventral opening situated in the cingulum of O. labens exhibits size variability; it may serve as an opening for engulfiing food particles because it varies in size. We propose that ingestion of prey by O. labens occurs through the ventral opening, the proposed feeding apparatus of this species, which is similar to the function of the peduncle-like structure of mixotrophic dinoflagellates. The behavior of O. labens appears similar to that previously described for Dinophysis species. 相似文献

The coral reef which surrounds two thirds of Henderson Island, Pitcairn Group, consists of a reef flat, reef margin and fore-reef which slopes gradually into deeper water. The range of sublittoral habitats provided by this topography is limited, reflecting a low level of coral diversity. Spur and groove formations of the fore-reef are present around the northern end of the island which contrasts with the south-western corner, where, in the absence of a fringing reef platform, subaerial cliff faces are fronted by a cliff foot submarine 'trench'. In general, live coral cover on the fore-reef was estimated at between 10–30%, though at sites off the east coast it reached 80%. The associated communities, particularly of sessile filter-feeding groups, were found to be impoverished. The two factors of biogeographical isolation and of local bioerosion processes are proposed as being the main reasons for the depauperate nature of the island's reef. Brief notes are included on the lagoon and fore-reef bathymetry and habitats of Ducie and Oeno Atolls for comparative purposes. 相似文献

Abstract. — Acanthochromis polyacanthus is an unusual tropical marine damselfish that uniquely lacks pelagic larvae and has lost the capacity for broad-scale dispersal among coral reefs. Different color morphs exist in different regions of the Great Barrier Reef, and morphs from northern and southern regions are genetically distinct. In the Hydrographers Passage area, which is a large break through the reef matrix in the central Great Barrier Reef that may have acted as a bottleneck on the migration of these animals during sea level rise, three morphs recognized from other regions were found on neighboring reefs. The transition between them is abrupt with three loci (AAT-2*, GPI-1*, and PGM*) showing allelic frequency patterns close to fixation between opposite alleles within a few kilometers. On two reefs (Hyde, Bebe), a pair of morphs was found to coexist and exhibited a habitat partitioning pattern with each morph restricted to one side on the reef and steep transitions in between. Outside these transition zones, phenotypes and genotypes matched those on surrounding reefs without coexistence and were little changed from reefs several hundred kilometers away. An electrophoretic survey across one transition zone on Hyde Reef showed steep genetic gradients along one kilometer of reef slope. Significant linkage disequilibria in samples collected in Hyde Reef as a result of dispersal of parental combinations of alleles into the center or because parental combinations of alleles confer greater fitness, allowed us to estimate the dispersal rate (189 m/generation) and the selection pressure on the marker loci (0.411). Finally, we investigated models that could lead to such a steep transition in genotypic and phenotypic combinations. Both contact zones on each side of Hyde Reef were associated with geomorphological discontinuities in the reef structure. We suggest that assortative mating may be a proximal mechanism for maintaining isolated each color morph, which could be reinforced by selective predation against hybrids outside the zone of their formation (i.e., the frequency-dependent selection model of Mallet and Barton (1989). Acanthochromis is a midwater planktivore and, when in coexistence, the two morphs forage in different habitats amid multispecific flocks of other damselfishes of matching colors. 相似文献

Spawning behavior and haremic mating system in the corallivorous butterflyfish,Chaetodon trifascialis, at Kuroshima Island, Okinawa 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Territorial and spawning behavior ofChaetodon trifascialis were investigated on a small patch of reef at Kuroshima Island, Okinawa, Japan. Three males and 8 females inhabited the reef,
each individual defending a territory against conspecifics of the same sex. Each male territory included 2 or 3 female territories.
In the daytime, each male frequently visited the females living in its territory. At dusk in the full or new moon periods,
courtship began within the female territories, pair spawning subsequently occurring within or near those territories. When
a male actively courted a female in the territory of a second male, the latter male immediately chased off the intruder. Thus,
mating occurred only between a male and females living in former's territory. This is the first report of a haremic mating
system among butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae). 相似文献

Spawning and related behavior of a monogamous butterflyfish,Chaetodon trifasciatus, were observed at Kuroshima Island, Okinawa, Japan. Each heterosexual pair defended a feeding territory in the daytime. Spawning
occurred at dusk on the days around full or new moon in the daytime. Spawning occurred at dusk on the days around full or
new moon in the vicinity of offshore tidal currents. Spawning migration to such sites occurred in pairs, the feeding territories
of which were located in areas of inshore currents. In the evening each pair established a small temporary territory, which
they spawned adjacent to and slept within until the next morning. The distribution of sleeping sites as well as tidal current
directions may determine the spawning sites of this butterflyfish. 相似文献
