Protandry in anemonefishes has been attributed to random pair formation, which results from their limited mobility after random recruitment to isolated host anemones. The recruitment and movement of the anemonefish Amphiprion frenatus were investigated in relation to its group structure and the spatial distribution of its host anemone on a coral reef, where it inhabits isolated single hosts and interhost movement is rare. A juvenile tended to be recruited to a host from which a former resident(s) had disappeared, indicating that larval recruitment is not random. After mass bleaching of corals during which many hosts died, a quarter of adults moved between hosts on average 42m in 3 weeks, indicating that their mobility is potentially high. The few migrations under normal conditions were probably due to the low benefit of movements. Even after the movements, a female was much larger than her mate in a host, and a large female tended to pair with a large male. Although body size of females was positively correlated with their host size, that of males was not. It is suggested that the size of a single host does not allow the coexistence of two or more large fish, and the size composition of each pair is affected by the host size. Protandry in the monogamous fish may be attributed to the nonrandom pair formation in the limited space of a host.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the introduced blueline snapper (Lutjanus kasmira, Family: Lutjanidae) may adversely affect populations of native fishery species in Hawai’i through competition for spatial or dietary resources, or through predation on young fish. We studied the habitat use patterns of L. kasmira and several native reef fish species using direct observation by SCUBA divers. Habitat use patterns of the yellowtail goatfish (Mulloidichthys vanicolensis, Family: Mullidae) were most similar to those of L. kasmira. Both species were primarily found low in the water column and were closely associated with areas of vertical relief. Individual M. vanicolensis were found higher in the water column when L. kasmirawere present, but L. kasmira were not similarly affected by M. vanicolensis. This finding suggests asymmetrical competition for shelter, in which the dominant L. kasmira displaces M. vanicolensis farther into the water column. This displacement from the protection of the reef could increase the vulnerability of M. vanicolensisto predators and fishers. *The US Government’s right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged.  相似文献

The perceived wide geographic range of organisms in the sea, facilitated by ready dispersal of waterborne dispersal stages, is a challenge for hypotheses of marine speciation but a boon to efforts of marine conservation. Wide species ranges are especially striking in the reef-rich Indo-west Pacific, the largest and most diverse marine biogeographic region, extending across half the planet. The insular marine biota of the tropical Pacific is characterized by wide-ranging species and provides the most striking examples of long distance dispersal, with endemism largely confined to the most remote island groups. Here we show that the gastropod Astralium "rhodostomum" has developed endemic clades on almost every Pacific archipelago sampled, a pattern unprecedented in marine biogeography, and reminiscent of the terrestrial biota of oceanic islands. Mitochondrial DNA sequences indicate that this species-complex is comprised of at least 30 geographically isolated clades, separated by as little as 180 km. Evidence suggests that such fine scale endemism and high diversity is not exceptional, but likely characterizes a substantial fraction of the reef biota. These results imply that (1) marine speciation can regularly occur over much finer spatial scales than generally accepted, (2) the diversity of coral reefs is even higher than suggested by morphology-based estimates, and (3) conservation efforts need to focus at the archipelagic level in the sea as on land.  相似文献

Many parrotfishes (Scaridae) co-occur in mixed-species aggregations as juveniles, but diverge in resource use and social structure as adults. Focal observations of three juvenile parrotfishes (Scarus coeruleus, Sparisoma aurofrenatum, and Sparisoma viride) were conducted on inshore patch reefs in the Florida Keys to determine how feeding and aggressive interactions vary with group participation. All three species spent more time in groups than alone, most often in groups of less than ten individuals. Feeding rates were significantly higher for S. viride when foraging in groups than when alone. All species fed most often from Halimeda, and overall diet composition was similar for fish whether feeding in groups or alone. The frequency of aggressive interactions varied with group participation. Focal S. aurofrenatum were more aggressive when in groups than when alone, and both S. aurofrenatum and S. viride were attacked more often by damselfishes when they were alone than when in groups. In contrast, feeding rates, diet breadth, and aggressive interactions of S. coeruleus were less affected by group participation. Small mixed-species aggregations of coral reef fishes may be large enough for individuals to assume some of the benefits of group participation while at the same time avoiding the costs of competition realized in larger groups.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the question of the nature of evolutionary forces that account for the oceanic planktonic larva period. Putting the emphasis on coral reef fishes, we first present the most common theories and hypotheses, looking at them critically from the standpoint of individual selection and taking into account new data arising from genetic surveys. We concluded that each individual hypothesis based on short term advantages of a larva period cannot convincingly explain by itself the long term maintenance of such a complex life cycle. We then study the impact of the pelagic interval on species dispersal by compiling data sets from the literature. Following simple analysis of this data, we found that duration of the planktonic larva period drives gene flow in the Great Barrier Reef and colonisation throughout the Pacific. In speculating on the real nature of the short term selective forces responsible for the maintenance of the pelagic interval, we acknowledge the fact that long term constraints alone will not withstand erosion if they are not reinforced by some sort of short term mechanism. We tentatively arrive at the conclusion that these short term forces may be different from what could be expected from functional studies of planktonic life.  相似文献

Abstract. Polyps of the tropical corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma segregate sexes between center and edge positions within aggregations produced by clonal replication. On a reef flat at Eilat, northern Red Sea, infertile polyps and males occur mainly along the edges of clonal aggregations, while females mostly occupy central positions within each aggregation. In addition, on the inner to middle reef flat where polyps of this species are abundant, aggregations consist mostly of females. On the outer reef flat, where polyps are rare, a sampled aggregation consisted mostly of males and infertile polyps. Male polyps are significantly smaller than females, and the smallest polyps are infertile. Fecundity increases significantly with polyp size in females, but testis size and number do not vary with body size in males. Oocytes are present in polyps during most of the year and gradually increase in size until annual spawning in June-July during the period of maximum day length. Testes do not vary significantly in size during the year and remain a small proportion of body mass (>8%). In contrast, females invest up to 30% of their body mass into gonads during the months immediately before spawning. The annual spawning of gametes coincides with a temporary drop in the frequency of clonal replication by polyps. We estimate that each female polyp of R. rhodostoma may release up to 3000 large eggs (500 μm in maximum diameter) each summer. The high investment of this corallimorpharian in sexual production of planktonic propagules may allow rapid dispersal to reef habitats distant from parent populations.  相似文献

Synopsis Cleaning activity at specific cleaning stations was monitored over a depth range of 15–45 m at Salt River Submarine Canyon, St. Croix using the HYDROLAB underwater habitat. We observed over 4600 cleaning events involving 32 host species. Cleaners included the fishesGobiosoma evelynae (cleaning goby), juvenileBodianus rufus (Spanish hogfish) and juvenileThalassoma bifasciatum (bluehead wrasse) and the shrimpPericlimenes pedersoni, often active simultaneously at the same stations. Although cleaning was observed to depths of 30 m, the greatest density of cleaning fishes occurred at a sharp break in the bottom contour at 15 m.Clepticus parrae was the dominant fish cleaned by fishes (80% of events), and the graysby,Petrometopon cruentatum, was most frequently cleaned byPericlimenes. Cleaning was initiated byGobiosoma at 0600 to 0630 h and continued throughout the day as intense bouts of cleaning activity were interspersed with periods of relative calm.Bodianus patrolled areas of several meters and would sometimes rise over a meter above the substrate to initiate cleaning. In contrast, gobies were much more restricted in both lateral and vertical movements.Gobiosoma andBodianus cleaned 3104 and 1346 hosts during the study compared to only 207 forThalassoma. This study of a deeper reef area shows significantly more cleaning activity byBodianus and much less byThalassoma than has been reported from other studies in shallower water  相似文献

The study examined the effects of coastal embankment building on fish recruitment in three habitat types (beach-rock, white sand and muddy sand) in the near shore and fringing reef habitats of Moorea lagoon (French Polynesia). The results showed a positive relationship between the presence of embankments and the density and species richness of juvenile fish along the shoreline (whatever the habitat types). However, embankments deteriorated adjacent fringing reefs (decrease of live coral), which led to a decrease of fish density on beach-rock and white sand sites, and a decrease of fish species richness on muddy sand sites.  相似文献
