Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas) is a common brachionid in sewage oxidation ponds. The uptake and assimilation of E. coli was optimal at concentrations of 2.7–6.9 × 108 cells ml–1 while assimilation coefficient per body weight of B. calyciflorus was found to be 10% · Ind.–1 d–1. More than two eggs per individual were produced during 24 hours when brachionids were fed with a mixutre of E. coli (109 cells · ml–1) and Chlorella spp. (106 cells · ml–1). The nutritional value of the mixture of E. coli and Chlorella spp. was found to be higher than that of bacteria alone.  相似文献

1. Understanding the factors underlying the abundance and distribution of species requires the consideration of a complex suite of interacting biotic and abiotic factors operating on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Larval mosquitoes inhabiting small human-constructed ponds represent a unique opportunity to investigate the relative importance of these structuring mechanisms while simultaneously generating applied knowledge on mosquito control. 2. A multi-year field survey of 32 stormwater ponds was conducted in central Illinois (Champaign County). From each pond, data were collected on pond structure type and hydroperiod, the presence/absence of cattails (Typha spp.), and measures of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon, and chlorophyll a. The communities of crustacean zooplankton and aquatic insects were characterised, and these taxa were assigned into two main groups: predators and competitors of larval mosquitoes. Structural equation modelling was used to explore the direct and indirect effects of these biotic and abiotic factors on larval density for three species of culicine mosquitoes (Culex pipiens, Culex restuans, and Aedes vexans). 3. Hydroperiod had an indirect negative effect on C. pipiens density. However, this effect was mediated by predator density; more permanent ponds had more predators, which therefore reduced the density of C. pipiens larvae. Aedes vexans density was positively correlated with predator density. No predictor variables were found that explained variation in C. restuans density. 4. This study show that the relative importance of these biotic and abiotic factors varies among species of culicine mosquitoes inhabiting stormwater ponds.  相似文献

Summary The effects of environmental conditions (solar irradiance and temperature) and population density on the production of Spirulina biomass with brackish water are reported for cultures grown in outdoor ponds. Higher specific growth rates were observed at lower population densities. Lower growth rates were associated with limitation by light in dense cultures under optimum conditions in the summer. Seasonal variation in productivity was observed. In summer, light was the limiting factor, whereas in winter the low daytime temperature appeared to constitute the major limitation. The oxygen concentration in the culture can serve as a useful indicator of limiting factors and can also be used to estimate the extent of such limitations.  相似文献

Continental freshwater, irrespective of its origin, natural or artificial, may contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation. Because of the decline of natural aquatic habitats, an increasing concern exists about the role of water ponds as spots of biological richness. Amphibians are strongly at risk since the loss of aquatic habitats, among other factors, causes the isolation of their populations. The implementation of livestock ponds as artificial wetlands may be an effective measure for enhancing amphibian decaying communities. This policy assumes that managing ponds for wildlife conservation purposes joins livestock welfare requirements, but this hypothesis has not been specifically studied. The purpose of this research is to evaluate this premise in the Urbasa-Andia Natural Park, a high-valuable environmental area that holds a relevant amphibian community and has an extended grazing history. We analyse the relationship between the amphibian assemblages present and the design and attributes of a variety of drinking points previously chosen by embodying a high environmental heterogeneity of water resources. The results of this study indicate that the quality of the water stored varies largely along the season, degrading severely in summer because of the wading of animals (in unfenced ponds) and the low water recharge. The contamination, caused by increased enteric microorganisms and dissolved N, is likely to affect livestock more severely than amphibian populations, since the sensitive breeding stage of many amphibians occurs before the loss of water quality. Although the quality of the water is essential, and mammals (wild and domestic) have an influence on it, other factors that are less considered by environmental managers emerge as main drivers of amphibian assemblages, such as hydroperiod, predator occurrence and the environmental quality of the surrounding habitat.  相似文献

Temporary pond Daphnia flourish on relatively poor-quality food, suggesting adaptation to stringent temporary pond conditions. We conducted laboratory life history experiments on populations of Daphnia obtusa from a shaded woodland temporary pond (short hydroperiod, dystrophic) and an open farmland temporary pond (long hydroperiod, eutrophic), and compared a suite of physical/chemical conditions in the ponds to evaluate habitat conditions. We hypothesized that the shaded woodland pond population would be more fit in terms of life history variables for individuals (age and size at first reproduction, mean brood size, mean number of neonates) and populations (generation time, net reproductive rate R 0, and intrinsic reproductive rate r) given a standard, low-quality food (trout chow and yeast). Life history traits of woodland pond animals were mixed, relative to farm pond animals, and consistent with bet-hedging for an unpredictable habitat. Values of life history traits rivaled or exceeded those of other studies using phytoplankton as food, and were influenced by the pond water used for our study. Life histories clearly differ among local and regional temporary pond Daphnia obtusa populations, and should be valuable for examining the relative influences of local selection and metapopulation dynamics on population structure.  相似文献

This is the first study where elephant footprints as habitat for aquatic macroinvertebrate communities were assessed. Preliminary observations during the dry season in Kibale Forest, Uganda, indicated that water‐filled footprints constituted the majority of stagnant ponds. Consequently, this study aimed at giving an overview of the diversity and ecology of those habitats and the capacity of elephants as ecosystem engineers. The fauna and abiotic factors (age, size, substrate, organic matter, pH, canopy cover, temperature, conductivity) of 30 water‐filled natural elephant footprints were sampled, resulting in the record of 61 morphospecies among 27 families/orders. Species composition was dominated by Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae and influenced by environmental variables, such as age and organic matter. To study the colonization process, 18 artificial footprints were created within different distances from the water source. After 5 days, 410 specimens were collected, with higher species richness in artificial footprints closer to a natural water source. We conclude that colonization of water‐filled footprints is fast, they constitute important habitats with high diversity and variability, and they act as stepping stones for dispersal and add to the ability of elephants as ecosystem engineers. We emphasize the importance of elephants as a key species in ecosystem dynamics and conservation practice.  相似文献

Pollution of rivers caused by human activity is a widely discussed problem, however there is not much attention paid to the changes of water quality that result from the inflow of effluent discharged from fish breeding ponds. The paper presents results of studies on changes of the abiotic parameters (hydrochemical and hydrological) of water observed in the yearly cycle between 2004 and 2008 in selected rivers of Northwest Poland. It was proved that the fastest reaction on the inflow of the effluent discharged from the fish ponds was reflected in changes of biogenic and organic compounds in the river water. The largest, i.e. threefold (rivers Krapiel and Tywa) or even fourfold (rivers Rurzyca and Stepnica) increase in nutrients and organic matter was recorded during the pond effluent discharge into the rivers. At that time values of the organic matter ranged from 8.9 to 18.3 mgO2/dm3 (BOD5), the nitrogen compounds from 16.868 to 26.930 mgN/dm3, while the phosphorus from 1.928 to 6.353 mgP/dm3. Interestingly, an additional dry mass of seston was recorded no earlier than the activity of the harmful element had been stopped and the river had resumed to the “initial” state (i.e. before the effluent discharge); that period varied from one to two months, depending on the river characteristics. The highest values of the dry seston mass (580.9 mg/dm3) was recorded in river Krapiel in November 2006. It seems that in spite of remarkable influence on values of individual physical and chemical indices of the river water quality, the effluent discharge from the fish ponds is not a factor hampering the self-purification processes of the rivers.  相似文献

研究了人工模拟淹水胁迫对两年生栓皮栎(Quercus variabilis)和枫杨(Pterocarya stenoptera)树苗的影响。经过70 d的淹水处理两种植物的存活率均为100%。淹水对两种植物生理生态过程的早期影响是快速降低了二者的最大净光合速率(Pmax)、气孔导度(Gs)、最大光化学量子效率(Fv/Fm)。经过7 d的淹水处理后,受淹栓皮栎的最大净光合速率是对照的39%,枫杨是对照的42%;受淹栓皮栎的气孔导度是对照的38.8%,枫杨是对照的71.9%;水淹5 d后,枫杨和栓皮栎的最大光化学量子效率分别为0.694和0.757。但经过最初的下降后,枫杨的最大净光合速率、气孔导度和最大光化学量子效率逐渐恢复,而栓皮栎的则持续下降。到淹水70 d时栓皮栎的最大净光合速率下降了94.1%,最大光化学量子效率的平均值为0.537。在试验过程中,枫杨产生了有利于吸收氧气的不定根和肥大的皮孔,而栓皮栎没有产生不定根。随淹水时间的增加枫杨的叶绿素含量与对照没有显著差异;而栓皮栎的叶绿素含量在第33 d后大幅降低,Chla/Chlb的比值下降。淹水后第10 d和第70 d测定的清晨水势,受淹栓皮栎比对照高,而受淹枫杨比对照低,因此淹水导致的叶片水势的变化可能与树种相关。以上的试验结果表明受淹的栓皮栎的光合机构运转受到了严重影响,因此栓皮栎应属于对淹水较敏感的树种。从两种植物受淹水胁迫的形态和生理变化看,枫杨比栓皮栎更耐淹,更适合库塘消落区生境。  相似文献

对虾养殖污染主要来源于过量的饵料,对虾排泄物、粪便和生物遗骸溶出或分解产生的N、P营养盐和有机质,以及在养殖过程中所投放的化学或抗生素类药物残留。本文根据有关调查和研究的资料,阐述对虾养殖自身污染的机制,着重分析目前我国南方较为普遍的高位池和低位池对虾养殖模式的特点与自身污染的关系及其环境效应,并提出针对这两种养殖模式的污染防治对策。  相似文献
