Feed costs account for the largest proportion of direct cost within suckler beef production systems. By identifying the cow type with enhanced capability of converting grazed herbage to beef output across lactations, suckler cow systems would become more efficient and sustainable. The objective of this study was to estimate grass DM intake (GDMI) and production efficiency among lactating suckler cows of diverse genetic merit for the national Irish maternal index (Replacement Index) which includes cow efficiency components such as milk yield and feed intake. Data from 131 cows of diverse genetic merit within the Replacement Index, across two different replacement strategies (suckler or dairy sourced), were available over two grazing seasons. Milk yield, GDMI, cow live weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were recorded during early, mid and late-lactation, with subsequent measures of production efficiency extrapolated. Genetic merit had no significant effect on any variables investigated, with the exception of low genetic merit (LOW) cows being 22 kg heavier in BW than high genetic merit (HIGH) cows (P < 0.05). Beef cows were 55 kg heavier in BW (P < 0.001), had a 0.31 greater BCS (P < 0.05) and 0.30 Unité Fourragère Lait (UFL) greater energy requirement for maintenance compared to dairy sourced beef × dairy crossbred (BDX) cows (P < 0.001). The BDX had 0.8 kg greater GDMI, produced 1.8 kg more milk (P < 0.001), had a 0.8 UFL greater energy requirement for lactation and produced weanlings that were 17 kg heavier in BW than beef cows (P < 0.05). Subsequent efficiency variables of milk per 100 kg BW (P < 0.001), milk per kg GDMI (P < 0.001) and GDMI per 100 kg BW (P < 0.001) were more favourable for BDX. The correlations examined showed GDMI had moderate positive correlations (P < 0.001) with intake per 100 kg BW, net energy intake per kg milk yield, RFI and intake per 100 kg calf weaning weight but was weakly negatively correlated to milk yield per kg GDMI (P < 0.001). No difference was observed across genetic merit for beef cows for any of the traits investigated. Results from the current study showed that, while contrasting replacement strategies had an effect on GDMI and production efficiency, no main effect was observed on cows diverse in genetic merit for Replacement Index. Nonetheless, utilising genetic indexes in the suckler herd is an important resource for selecting breeding females for the national herd and phenotypic performance generated from this study can be included in future genetic evaluations to improve reliability of genetic values. 相似文献

Welfare and management of calves is of increasing interest and also influences performance of these animals in later life. The aim of this study was to assess management and environmental conditions under which pre-weaned dairy calves are reared on commercial Irish dairy farms. We included 47 spring-calving, pasture-based herds in this study. Herd and animal-specific data, such as mortality rate, age and breed, were gathered from all participants via the HerdPlus® database. Information pertaining to management practices was collected by conducting an interview with the principal calf rearer, while an assessment of calf housing facilities was conducted to identify conditions calves were reared in. The environmental assessment included measurements of space allowance per calf, as well as feeding equipment hygiene. To assess calf behaviour video observations were used, while accounting for the number of calves present in a group and the space available per calf. Faecal samples were also collected to determine the presence of enteric pathogens among calves. To compare calf space allowance, group size and presence of enteric pathogens early and late in the calving season each farm was visited twice. Calf mortality was not associated with either herd size, space allowance per calf or post-colostrum feeding practices. Higher calf mortality was identified among herds which reported experiencing an on-set of calf pneumonia during weeks 8 to 10 of the calving season. This study demonstrates that factors associated with calf welfare on commercial Irish dairy farms (e.g. space allowance, mortality rate) are independent of herd size. Some management practices however, such as methods used for treating health issues can affect rates of calf mortality experienced. Calf mortality, for example, was lower in herds which treated diarrhoea cases by administering electrolytes, while continuing to offer milk. Behavioural observations indicate that smaller group sizes could promote expression of positive behaviours, potentially resulting from an overall improvement in welfare. Space allowance per calf was not associated with observed behaviour frequencies. We also identified that similar rates of calf mortality are experienced across herds of different sizes. 相似文献

AbstractThe hydrolysates of soy protein and milk protein are nutritional and functional food ingredients. Aspergillus pseudoglaucus aspergillopepsin I (App) is an acidic protease, including signal peptide, propeptide, and catalytic domain. Here, we cloned the catalytic domain App with or without propeptide in Escherichia coli. The results showed that the App without propeptide was not expressed or did not exhibit activity and App with propeptide (proApp) was highly expressed with a specific activity of 903?U/mg. Moreover, the denaturation temperature of proApp was 4.1?°C higher than App’s. The proApp showed 104?U/mg and 252?U/mg hydrolysis activities towards soy protein and milk protein under acidic conditions. By RP-HPLC analysis, the peptides obtained from the hydrolysates of soy protein and milk protein were hydrophilic peptides. This work first demonstrates efficient proteolysis of soy protein and milk protein through the functional expression of full-length proApp, which will likely have valuable industrial applications. 相似文献

Fouling cannot always be prevented; it is important to consider the design of fouling‐resistant heat exchangers. To examine these exchangers, a test fluid whose fouling behaviour is understood should be used. Experiments have been conducted to examine the response of two model systems, a pulsatile flow and a fluid bed heat exchanger, to fouling from whey protein concentrates. Both systems are effective in certain cases, although the enhanced mass transfer possible in the pulsatile flow exchanger can increase fouling when mass transfer controls deposition. This demonstrates the possible danger in installing “antifouling”; systems. The possible mechanisms by which antifouling exchangers operate is discussed; they may work both by slowing the kinetics of fouling or enhancing the heat transfer coefficient. A simple model to demonstrate the design of antifouling exchangers is presented. 相似文献

A mold strain Y244-2 capable of producing l-lysine α-oxidase, a new enzyme catalyzing the α-oxidative deamination of l-lysine, was identified as Trichoderma viride. Among strains belonging to the genus Trichoderma tested, only Trichoderma viride Y244-2 produced the enzyme in wheat bran culture. The maximum enzyme production by the mold grown on wheat bran was observed after 10 and 14 days incubation with and without NaN03, respectively. Addition of NaN03, NH4N03, adenine, purine nucleosides, l-histidine, glycine or l-glutamine to wheat bran stimulated the production of the enzyme. In the liquid culture, the enzyme was produced extracellulary under the aerobic conditions, although the production was much lower than that in the wheat bran culture. 相似文献

The protein in soybean milk exists as 11S and 7S globulins, and the particles formed from them. The lipid content and composition in the protein fractions and effects of defatting on the form of the protein particles were investigated. The size-distribution of protein particles in both raw and heated soybean milk (soymilk) was not influenced by defatting with hexane, but the number of large particles were slightly increased. The protein particles from raw and heated soymilk samples contained 60% and 3% of the total lipid, respectively. Almost all neutral lipid in the particles of raw soymilk was moved to a floating fraction by heating, but a half of the phospholipids was retained in the particles. The protein components from the hexane-defatted meal were similar to those from whole meal, but those from the C-M-de-fatted meal contained remarkably little β-conglycinin. C-M-de-fatting (Removal of polar lipids) caused a reduction in the particulate fraction, and the addition of phospholipids (lecithin) promoted the formation of protein particles. 相似文献

A Rhodococcus erythropolis expression system for the bovine lactoferrin C-lobe was constructed. The DNA fragments encoding the BLF C-lobe were amplified and cloned into vector pTip LCH1.2. R. erythropolis carrying the pTip-C-lobe was cultured at 30 °C with shaking, and expression of the rBLF C-lobe was induced by adding 1 μg/ml (final concentration) thiostrepton. The rBLF C-lobe was isolated in native and denatured (8 M urea) form by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography. To obtain a bioactive rBLF C-lobe, the protein isolated in the denatured form was refolded by stepwise dialysis against refolding buffers. The antibacterial activity of the rBLF C-lobe was tested by the filter-disc plate assay method. The refolded rBLF C-lobe demonstrated antibacterial activity against selected strains of Escherichia coli. 相似文献
