Parasitoid quality, subject to both genetic and environmental influences, is critical to the success of any biological control program, however, its measurement and improvement is poorly understood. In this study, a classic genetic approach is taken to develop two indices, namely a character index and a fitness index, for the measurement and selection of high quality parasitoids used in inundative release. Six life-history traits and corresponding fitness components in 33 inbred strains of Trichogramma minutum were used to generate both genotypic and phenotypic variance-covariance matrices that then allowed for the construction of the indices. Most traits and their fitness components were positively correlated, both phenotypically and genotypically, with lifetime fecundity and the number of female offspring appearing to have an important influence. Selection of the top three strains showed that parasitoid quality could be improved by 36% using the character index and possibly up to 150% using the fitness index. The two indices were linearly correlated suggesting that either could be used to measure quality. The character index is recommended because it requires information on only three life-history traits (fecundity, number of female offspring, and number of male offspring) and has highly correlated responses of fitness components. Our work demonstrates that the best quality T. minutum will be obtained by using the character index to select for inbred strains which have high fecundity and number of female offspring.  相似文献

Harpagophytum procumbens (Burch.) DC. ex Meisn. subsp. procumbens (Pedaliaceae) is an important African medicinal plant growing in the Kalahari region of southern Africa. This species, together with its close taxonomic ally Harpagophytum zeyheri are collectively referred to as Devil's Claw and are used interchangeably for the treatment of inflammation-related disorders. Although the two taxa are botanically and chemically similar, H. zeyheri contains lower levels of harpagoside and these two species have not been proven to exhibit equipotent pharmacological activity. Due to these taxonomic similarities, effective quality control methods are required to distinguish between the two species. Differentiation between the two species was achieved using single point mid-infrared spectroscopy in combination with chemometric data analysis. The orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) model had good predictive ability, as illustrated by the model statistics: R2X (cum predictive + orthogonal) = 0.86 and Q2 (cum) = 0.63. Short wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging could distinguish between the two species with acceptable model statistics: R2X and R2Y of 0.99 and 0.78, respectively. This study demonstrated that both MIR single point spectroscopy and SWIR hyperspectral imaging coupled with chemometric modelling are reliable and rapid methods to determine the authenticity of Harpagophytum spp.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Two Q factors are in common use in bioacoustics: Q, the Quality Factor and Q10 dB. The usage, definitions and separate application of these two terms can be traced back for more than 30 years. The two terms provide different measurements of the sharpness of tuning of e.g. acoustic systems. The two terms have been used in separate contexts and they measure different things. In view of the confusion that arises from the shared use of the letter Q, it is important that whichever Q is used is defined clearly in all publications.  相似文献

Application of a suspension (log 8.0/ml) of Cryptococcus laurentii prior to harvest led to a reduction in Botrytis cinerea decay of strawberries stored at 4 or 20 °C, for 12 or 4 days, respectively. The frequency of spraying antagonist significantly influenced disease incidence in strawberry fruit. The best inhibition of disease was achieved when fruit sprayed C. laurentii with three applications that began 6 days prior to harvest, and the incidence of gray mold and natural decay treated with this method was 21% and 11%, compared with 88% and 62% in the control after storage at 20 °C for 4 days. A similar result occurred in the treated fruit after storage at 4 °C for 12 days. Dilation plate counts on Rose Bengal agar and scanning electron microscopy results showed that three applications with C. laurentii at 6, 3 and 0 days before harvest improved its ability to colonize the epidermis of strawberry fruit in the greenhouse and during storage compared to single application. In addition, antagonistic yeast spraying before harvest could reduce the weight loss, delay the decrease of the firmness and ascorbic acid, but had no significant effect on the contents of soluble solids, titratable acidity and fruit surface color. These results suggested that preharvest spraying with C. laurentii might be a promising alternative to fungicide application for decay control of strawberry.  相似文献

Incremental coring of trees is the key method used in non-destructive dendrochronological sampling. Despite the advances in developing such methods, the sampling of large, high-density trees still poses a challenge in remote tropical forests. Manually operated incremental drills, while easy to transport across difficult terrain, limit sample size and can often get damaged in the sampling process, especially when trees have wood densities above 0.8 g/cm³. Here, we discuss the existing available alternatives and present an up-to-date incremental coring system composed of a borer coupled to a hand-held drilling machine and a support attached to the tree which can collect incremental cores of 1.5 mm in diameter and over 1.0 m in length. The support ensures stability for the drill throughout the sampling process. This system is relatively lightweight and portable, offering field flexibility and suitability for sampling in remote locations. It provides a core sample of an appropriate diameter and amount for carrying out ring-width measurements, stable isotope and radiocarbon analyses on some of the large, older trees which are now being found in the tropics. We expect that this methodology will broaden the possibilities in the now-blossoming sub-field of tropical dendrochronology.  相似文献

IntroductionPencil beam scanning technique used at CNAO requires beam characteristics to be carefully assessed and periodically checked to guarantee patient safety. This study aimed at characterizing the Lynx® detector (IBA Dosimetry) for commissioning and periodic quality assurance (QA) for proton and carbon ion beams, as compared to EBT3 films, currently used for QA checks. Methods and materialsThe Lynx® is a 2-D high-resolution dosimetry system consisting of a scintillating screen coupled with a CCD camera, in a compact light-tight box. The scintillator was preliminarily characterized in terms of short-term stability, linearity with number of particles, image quality and response dependence on iris setting and beam current; Lynx® was then systematically tested against EBT3 films. The detector response dependence on radiation LET was also assessed.ResultsPreliminary results have shown that Lynx is suitable to be used for commissioning and QA checks for proton and carbon ion scanning beams; the cross-check with EBT3 films showed a good agreement between the two detectors, for both single spot and scanned field measurements. The strong LET dependence of the scintillator due to quenching effect makes Lynx® suitable only for relative 2-D dosimetry measurements.ConclusionLynx® appears as a promising tool for commissioning and periodic QA checks for both protons and carbon ion beams. This detector can be used as an alternative of EBT3 films, allowing real-time measurements and analysis, with a significant time sparing.  相似文献

Two years of data from four longitudinal traverses along each day's slide prepared from a continuously running Burkard sporetrap have been analyzed statistically. Using the Friedman test, a statistically significant difference was found between the four traverses, with a greater than 7% loss of pollen grains in the two outer traverses in relation to the inner. Four slides were then selected for more detailed analysis, using 18 longitudinal traverses with a 1-mm separation from the upper to the lower edge of the Melinex tape. There was found to be a progressive decline from the centre to the outside, and more than 4% of pollen grains were found outside the typical 14 mm width of the impaction orifice. There was no correlation between pollen grain size and the decline in counts from the centre to the outside. For the complete data set, there was a general rise in the diversity of pollen types with increasing sample counts, but above about 1000 pollen grains per sample there were no more than 27 pollen types found, often even fewer. A discussion is presented of whether four traverses really should be a fixing sample size, or whether it might be better to fix the total pollen count beginning with a traverse in the middle of the slide and ending with a variable number of traverses when that count is reached.  相似文献

Aim

To evaluate the association between dose–volume histogram (DVH) values in organs at risk (OAR) and patient-reported HRQoL outcomes.

Background

Data on the association between DVHs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients are limited.

Materials and methods

Five-year follow-up study of 154 patients with organ-confined (stage T1/T2) PCa treated with EBRT between January 2003 and November 2005. HRQoL was evaluated with the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index (EPIC). DVH for OARs (penile bulb, rectum and bladder) were created for all patients for whom data were available (119/154; 77%). The functional data analysis (FDA) statistical method was used. HRQoL data was collected prospectively and data analysis was performed retrospectively.

Results

Worsening of urinary incontinence and obstructive symptoms correlated with higher DVH dose distributions at 24 months. Increased rectal bleeding at months 24 and 60 correlated with higher DVH dose distributions in the 40–70?Gy range. Patients with deterioration in rectal incontinence presented a higher DVH distribution range than patients without rectal incontinence. Penile bulb DVH values and erectile dysfunction were not significantly associated.

Conclusions

DVH parameters and post-radiotherapy HRQoL appear to be closely correlated, underscoring the importance of assessing DVH values prior to initiating EBRT to determine the risk of developing HRQoL related adverse effects. Advanced treatment modalities may be appropriate in high risk cases to minimize treatment-related toxicity and to improve treatment outcomes and HRQoL. Future studies are needed to better elucidate the association between pre-treatment DVH parameters in organs at risk and subsequent HRQoL.  相似文献

Introduction

This study presents an analysis on the effects of positive social relationships as determining factors on the health status of the elderly, from an interdisciplinary point of view.

Materials and methods

A survey was carried out on a total of 2,332 subjects in the province of Toledo, Spain, using several scales related to the study objectives. For the multivariable analysis of the data, the linear regression, along with goodness of fit, as well as the tests of Cox, Snell and R-squared of Nagelkerke, were calculated to determine the correlation between the networks and the social contacts with the health.

Results

Good social relationships result in better health, because they allow us to feel good and add life to the years. The size of the social network, and the frequency of contacts, although decreasing with age, become vitally important at this stage of life. All these factors constitute stimuli to improve the perception of health, to provide social support in activities of daily living, as well as for instrumental or disease management.

Conclusions

The main outcome of this study is that positive social relationships can be considered as a determining factor in the health of the elderly, but not all these interactions influence the same extent. The factor of the human relationship in terms of emotional proximity, together with the frequency or quantity of these encounters, are also correlated with health, due to the emotional impact they imply.  相似文献

Background

To understand the mechanisms related to the ‘dynamical ordering’ of macromolecules and biological systems, it is crucial to monitor, in detail, molecular interactions and their dynamics across multiple timescales. Solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an ideal tool that can investigate biophysical events at the atomic level, in near-physiological buffer solutions, or even inside cells.

Scope of review

In the past several decades, progress in solution NMR has significantly contributed to the elucidation of three-dimensional structures, the understanding of conformational motions, and the underlying thermodynamic and kinetic properties of biomacromolecules. This review discusses recent methodological development of NMR, their applications and some of the remaining challenges.

Major conclusions

Although a major drawback of NMR is its difficulty in studying the dynamical ordering of larger biomolecular systems, current technologies have achieved considerable success in the structural analysis of substantially large proteins and biomolecular complexes over 1 MDa and have characterised a wide range of timescales across which biomolecular motion exists. While NMR is well suited to obtain local structure information in detail, it contributes valuable and unique information within hybrid approaches that combine complementary methodologies, including solution scattering and microscopic techniques.

General significance

For living systems, the dynamic assembly and disassembly of macromolecular complexes is of utmost importance for cellular homeostasis and, if dysregulated, implied in human disease. It is thus instructive for the advancement of the study of the dynamical ordering to discuss the potential possibilities of solution NMR spectroscopy and its applications. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled “Biophysical Exploration of Dynamical Ordering of Biomolecular Systems” edited by Dr. Koichi Kato.  相似文献
