An experimental study of flexoelectricity in model membranes containing ion pores and native membranes containing ion channels has been undertaken with the objective of determining the relationship, if any, between flexoelectricity and ion transport. Model membrane patches containing ion pores induced by a bluegreen algal toxin, microcystin-LR, and locust muscle membrane patches containing potassium channels were studied using patch-clamp techniques. A correspondence was established between the presence of open channels and pores and the amplitude of the 1st harmonic of the total membrane current when the membranes or patches were subjected to pressure oscillations. The 2nd harmonic of the membrane current provided a measure of the amplitude of a membrane curvature induced by pressure, thus making it possible to determine the membrane flexoelectric coefficient. This study shows that flexoelectricity could be an effective driving force for ion transport through membrane pores and channels, thus further highlighting the possible biological significance of this mechano-electric phenomenon.

The Australian plague locust Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker) exhibits facultative embryonic diapause during autumn. To approximate natural photoperiod changes during late summer and autumn, locust nymphs were reared under different total declines in laboratory photophase (−0.5, −0.75, −1.0, −1.25, −1.5, −1.75, −2 h each lowered in 15 min steps) in a 24 h photoperiod to quantify any effect on the subsequent production of diapause eggs. Induction of diapause eggs was significantly affected by accumulated photoperiod decline experienced by the parental generation throughout all development stages from mid-instar nymph to fledgling adult. The incidence of embryonic diapause ranged from nil at −0.5 h to 86.6% diapause at −2 h. Continued declines in photoperiod for post-teneral locusts (transitioned from −1 h until fledging to −1.75 h) produced a further increase in the proportion of diapause eggs. The results were unaffected by time spent at any given photoperiod, despite a previously indicated maximal inductive photoperiod of 13.5 h being used as the mid-point of all treatments. Implications for the seasonal timing processes of photoperiodism in C. terminifera, which has a high migratory capacity and a latitudinal cline in the timing of diapause egg production across a broad geographic range, are discussed. 相似文献

It is well established that the brains of adult malacostracan crustaceans and winged insects display distinct homologies down to the level of single neuropils such as the central complex and the optic neuropils. We wanted to know if developing insect and crustacean brains also share similarities and therefore have explored how neurotransmitter systems arise during arthropod embryogenesis. Previously, Sintoni et al. (2007) had already reported a homology of an individually identified cluster of neurons in the embryonic crayfish and insect brain, the secondary head spot cells that express the Engrailed protein. In the present study, we have documented the ontogeny of the serotonergic system in embryonic brains of the Marbled Crayfish in comparison to Migratory Locust embryos using immunohistochemical methods combined with confocal laser-scan microscopy. In both species, we found a cluster of early emerging serotonin-immunoreactive neurons in the protocerebrum with neurites that cross to the contralateral brain hemisphere in a characteristic commissure suggesting a homology of this cell cluster. Our study is a first step towards a phylogenetic analysis of neurotransmitter system development and shows that, as for the ventral nerve cord, traits related to neurogenesis in the brain can provide valuable hints for resolving the much debated question of arthropod phylogeny. 相似文献

Intracellular levels of cyclic AMP in primary cultures of mouse embryo palate mesenchyme cells were elevated by exogenous administration of dibutyryl cAMP, 8Br-cAMP, prostaglandin E2 or prostacyclin. Glycosaminoglycan synthesis was stimulated in a dose-dependent manner. Qualitative analysis by DEAE anion exchange chromatography and sensitivity to hyaluronidase digestion indicated preferential stimulation of hyaluronic acid synthesis. Many acoustically communicating grasshoppers live in crowded populations where sound of many individuals may cause permanent noise. Tympanic receptors and first-order auditory interneurons of Locusta migratoria code such noise tonically, whereas many higher order interneurons react only weakly. In response to simultaneously presented sound they exhibit a better signal-to-noise ratio than their presynaptic elements. Two possible filter mechanisms are suggested for noise reduction in higher-order interneurons: (i) high-pass filtering of receptor spike frequencies and (ii) filtering due to synchronization of receptor spikes. Different receptor spike frequencies were elicited by series of short noise pulses with variable repetition rates. Receptor activities differing in their degree of synchronization were elicited by sound stimuli with variable rising times. In contrast to the first order interneurons some higher order interneurons responded best to receptor spike frequencies above 150–200 Hz, thus showing the postulated filtering. Only one higher order interneuron (AN4) distinguished between synchronous and asynchronous receptor activities. It is suggested that high-pass filtering of receptor spike frequencies is responsible for the noise filtering observed in these interneurons. The synchronization selectivity of AN4 is proposed to be responsible for temporal pattern detection of conspecific sounds. 相似文献

Spores of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium flavoviride were applied against the tree locust Anacridium melanorhodon melanorhodon in the field for the first time. The treated areas covered a total of 55 ha in the vicinity of Tendelti in the White Nile State of Sudan. At a dose of 100 g of spores/ha applied in 5 l of oil formulation, the application led to a reduction in population densities of 66-76% after 18 days. Correction of the data with the Henderson/ Tilton formula gave an overall control efficiency of 68%. 相似文献
