Although body size can affect individual fitness, ontogenetic and spatial variation in the ecology of an organism may determine the relative advantages of size and growth. During an 8‐year field study in the Bahamas, we examined selective mortality on size and growth throughout the entire reef‐associated life phase of a common coral‐reef fish, Stegastes partitus (the bicolour damselfish). On average, faster‐growing juveniles experienced greater mortality, though as adults, larger individuals had higher survival. Comparing patterns of selection observed at four separate populations revealed that greater population density was associated with stronger selection for larger adult size. Large adults may be favoured because they are superior competitors and less susceptible to gape‐limited predators. Laboratory experiments suggested that selective mortality of fast‐growing juveniles was likely because of risk‐prone foraging behaviour. These patterns suggest that variation in ecological interactions may lead to complex patterns of lifetime selection on body size.  相似文献

We investigated whether spiders fed lipid-rich rather than protein-rich prey elevate metabolism to avoid carrying excessive lipid deposits, or whether they store ingested lipids as a buffer against possible future starvation. We fed wolf spiders (Pardosa prativaga) prey of different lipid:protein compositions and measured the metabolic rate of spiders using closed respirometry during feeding and fasting. After a 16-day feeding period, spider lipid:protein composition was significantly affected by the lipid:protein composition of their prey. Feeding caused a large and fast increase in metabolism. The cost of feeding and digestion was estimated to average 21% of the ingested energy irrespective of diet. We found no difference in basal metabolic rate between dietary treatments. During starvation and decreased gradually, and the larger lipid stores in spiders fed lipid-rich prey appeared to extend survival of these spiders under starvation compared to spiders fed protein-rich prey. The results show that these spiders do not adjust metabolism in order to maintain a constant body composition when prey nutrient composition varies. Instead, lipids are stored efficiently and help to prepare the spiders for the long periods of food deprivation that may occur as a consequence of their opportunistic feeding strategy.  相似文献

Rifamycin B is an important polyketide antibiotic used in the treatment of tuberculosis and leprosy. We present results on medium optimization for Rifamycin B production via a barbital insensitive mutant strain of Amycolatopsis mediterranei S699. Machine-learning approaches such as Genetic algorithm (GA), Neighborhood analysis (NA) and Decision Tree technique (DT) were explored for optimizing the medium composition. Genetic algorithm was applied as a global search algorithm while NA was used for a guided local search and to develop medium predictors. The fermentation medium for Rifamycin B consisted of nine components. A large number of distinct medium compositions are possible by variation of concentration of each component. This presents a large combinatorial search space. Optimization was achieved within five generations via GA as well as NA. These five generations consisted of 178 shake-flask experiments, which is a small fraction of the search space. We detected multiple optima in the form of 11 distinct medium combinations. These medium combinations provided over 600% improvement in Rifamycin B productivity. Genetic algorithm performed better in optimizing fermentation medium as compared to NA. The Decision Tree technique revealed the media-media interactions qualitatively in the form of sets of rules for medium composition that give high as well as low productivity.  相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes are the most polymorphic loci known for vertebrates. Here we employed five microsatellite loci closely linked to the MHC region in an attempt to study the amount of genetic variation in 19 populations of the southeast Asian house mouse (Mus musculus castaneus) in Taiwan. The overall polymorphism at the five loci was high (He = 0.713), and the level of polymorphism varied from locus to locus. Furthermore, in order to investigate if selection is operating on MHC genes in natural mouse populations, we compared the extent and pattern of genetic variation for the MHC-linked microsatellite loci (the MHC loci) with those for the microsatellite loci located outside the MHC region (the non-MHC loci). The number of alleles and the logarithm of variance in repeat number were significantly higher for the MHC loci than for the non-MHC loci, presumably reflecting linkage to a locus under balancing selection. Although three statistical tests used do not provide support for selection, their lack of support may be due to low statistical power of the tests, to weakness of selection, or to a profound effect of genetic drift reducing the signature of balancing selection. Our results also suggested that the populations in the central and the southwestern regions of Taiwan might be one part of a metapopulation structure.  相似文献

Measurements provide the basis for process monitoring and control as well as for model development and validation. Systematic approaches to increase the accuracy and credibility of the empirical data set are therefore of great value. In (bio)chemical conversions, linear conservation relations such as the balance equations for charge, enthalpy, and/or chemical elements, can be employed to relate conversion rates. In a pactical situation, some of these rates will be measured (in effect, be calculated directly from primary measurements of, e.g., concentrations and flow rates), as others can or cannot be calculated from the measured ones. When certain measured rates can also be calculated from other measured rates, the set of equations, the accuracy and credibility of the measured rates can indeed be improved by, respectively, balancing and gross error diagnosis. The balanced conversion rates are more accurate, and form a consistent set of data, which is more suitable for further application (e.g., to calculate nonmeasured rates) than the raw measurements. Such an approach has drawn attention in previous studies. The current study deals mainly with the problem of mathematically classifying the conversion rates into balanceable and calculable rates, given the subset of measured rates. The significance of this problem is illustrated with some examples. It is shown that a simple matrix equation can be derived that contains the vector of measured conversion rates and the redundancy matrix R. Matrix R plays a predominant role in the classification problem. In supplementary articles, significance of the redundancy matrix R for an improved gross error diagnosis approach will be shown. In addition, efficient equations have been derived to calculate the balanceable and/or calculable rates. The method is completely based on matrix algebra (principally different from the graph-theoretical approach), and it is easily implemented into a computer program. The native Hawaiian honeycreepers represent a classic example of adaptive radiation and speciation, but currently face one the highest extinction rates in the world. Although multiple factors have likely influenced the fate of Hawaiian birds, the relatively recent introduction of avian malaria is thought to be a major factor limiting honeycreeper distribution and abundance. We have initiated genetic analyses of class II beta chain Mhc genes in four species of honeycreepers using methods that eliminate the possibility of sequencing mosaic variants formed by cloning heteroduplexed polymerase chain reaction products. Phylogenetic analyses group the honeycreeper Mhc sequences into two distinct clusters. Variation within one cluster is high, with dN > dS and levels of diversity similar to other studies of Mhc (B system) genes in birds. The second cluster is nearly invariant and includes sequences from honeycreepers (Fringillidae), a sparrow (Emberizidae) and a blackbird (Emberizidae). This highly conserved cluster appears reminiscent of the independently segregating Rfp-Y system of genes defined in chickens. The notion that balancing selection operates at the Mhc in the honeycreepers is supported by transpecies polymorphism and strikingly high dN/dS ratios at codons putatively involved in peptide interaction. Mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were invariant in the i'iwi, but were highly variable in the 'amakihi. By contrast, levels of variability of class II beta chain Mhc sequence codons that are hypothesized to be directly involved in peptide interactions appear comparable between i'iwi and 'amakihi. In the i'iwi, natural selection may have maintained variation within the Mhc, even in the face of what appears to a genetic bottleneck.  相似文献

Sense organs in the legs that detect body weight are an important component in the regulation of posture and locomotion. We tested the abilities of tibial campaniform sensilla, receptors that can monitor forces in the cockroach leg, to encode variations in body load in freely standing animals. Small magnets were attached to the thorax and currents were applied to a coil below the substrate. Sensory and motor activities were monitored neurographically. The tibial sensilla could show vigorous discharges to changing forces when animals stood upon their legs and actively supported the body weight. Firing of individual afferents depended upon the orientation of the receptors cuticular cap: proximal sensilla (oriented perpendicular to the leg axis) discharged to force increases while distal receptors (parallel to the leg) fired to decreasing forces. Proximal sensillum discharges were prolonged and could encode the level of load when increases were sustained. Firing of the trochanteral extensor motoneuron was also strongly modulated by changing load. In some postures, sensillum discharges paralleled changes in motor frequency consistent with a known interjoint reflex. These findings demonstrate that tibial campaniform sensilla can monitor the effects of body weight upon the legs and may aid in generating support of body load.  相似文献

The equilibrium structure of an additive, diallelic multilocus model of a quantitative trait under frequency- and density-dependent selection is derived. The trait is under stabilizing selection and mediates intraspecific competition as induced, for instance, by differential resource utilization. It is assumed that stabilizing selection is weak, but the strength of competition may be arbitrary relative to it. Density dependence is caused by population regulation, which may be of a very general kind. The number and effects of loci are arbitrary, and stabilizing selection is not necessarily symmetric with respect to the range of phenotypic values. All previously studied models of intraspecific competition for a continuum of resources known to the author reduce to a special case of the present model if overall selection is weak. Therefore, in this case our results are applicable as approximations to all these models. Our central result is the (nearly) complete characterization of the equilibrium and stability structure in terms of all parameters. It is derived under the sole assumption that selection is weak enough relative to recombination to ignore linkage disequilibrium. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions on the strength of competition relative to stabilizing selection are found that ensure the maintenance of multilocus polymorphism and the occurrence of disruptive selection. In this case, explicit formulas for the number of polymorphic loci at equilibrium, the allele frequencies, the genetic variance, and the strength of disruptive selection are obtained. For two loci, the effects of linkage are investigated analytically; for several loci, they are studied numerically.  相似文献

Molecular population genetics and the search for adaptive evolution in plants   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
The first papers on plant molecular population genetics were published approximately 10 years ago. Since that time, well over 50 additional studies of plant nucleotide polymorphism have been published, and many of these studies focused on detecting the signature of balancing or positive selection at a locus. In this review, we discuss some of the theoretical and statistical issues surrounding the detection of selection, with focus on plant populations, and we also summarize the empirical plant molecular population genetics literature. At face value, the literature suggests that a history of balancing or positive selection in plant genes is rampant. In two well-studied taxa (maize and Arabidopsis) over 20% of studied genes have been interpreted as containing the signature of selection. We argue that this is probably an overstatement of the prevalence of natural selection in plant genomes, for two reasons. First, demographic effects are difficult to incorporate and have generally not been well integrated into the plant population genetics literature. Second, the genes studied to date are not a random sample, so selected genes may be overrepresented. The next generation of studies in plant molecular population genetics requires additional sampling of local populations, explicit comparisons among loci, and improved theoretical methods to control for demography. Eventually, candidate loci should be confirmed by explicit consideration of phenotypic effects.  相似文献

The solitary endoparasitoid Anagyrus kamali Moursi was introduced to the Caribbean to control populations of Hibiscus Mealybug (HMB) Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green. As part of a biological control programme, mass rearing of A. kamali should produce a maximum of good quality female wasps, because only female parasitoids attack the mealybug. In laboratory experiments conducted at 27 +/- 2°C, mutual interference between female parasitoids on the total oviposition, progeny production and sex ratio was assessed at five parasitoid densities: i.e. 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 female wasps per 50 mealybugs. Oviposition rates of females decreased with increasing female density, without significantly affecting the sex ratio (average across densities of 0.49 +/- 0.322) (male/female). Under mass-rearing conditions, an increase of the female density from 25 to 75 individuals per cage resulted in an increase of the progeny production from 266 +/- 70.1 to 877.5 +/- 393.3 parasitoids. From 75 to 100 females released per cages, the progeny production was not significantly different with 877.5 +/- 393.3 and 965.3 +/- 608.3 parasitoids produced, respectively. Regardless of the female density, progeny sex ratio remained stable at an average of 0.45 +/- 0.095. As a result, the best efficiency of the mass-production system was obtained at a density of 75 females per cage. However, parasitoid production at this density was inferior to singly caged females by about 50%.  相似文献
