Calcifying coralline algae are functionally important in many ecosystems but their existence is now threatened by global climate change. The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of coralline algal metabolic functions and their interactions by assessing the respiration, photosynthesis and calcification rates in an articulated (geniculate) coralline alga, Ellisolandia elongata. Algal samples selected for this case study were collected from an intertidal rock-pool on the coast of Brittany (France). Physiological rates were assessed in summer and winter by measuring the concentration of oxygen, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity fluxes at five irradiance levels and in the dark using incubation chambers.
Respiration, photosynthetic and calcification rates were strongly affected by seasonal changes. Respiration increased with temperature, being ten-fold higher in summer than in winter. Photosynthetic parameters of the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-E) curve, Pgmax, Pnmax and Ek, were two- to three-fold higher in summer relative to winter. Photoinhibition was observed under high irradiance indicating an acclimation of E. elongata to low irradiance levels. Parameters of the calcification-irradiance (G-E) curve, Gmax and Ek, were approximately two-fold higher in summer compared with winter. In summer, calcification rates were more strongly inhibited under high irradiance than photosynthetic rates, suggesting a dynamic relationship between these metabolic processes. By inhabiting intertidal rock pools, E. elongata exhibits tolerance to a dynamic physico-chemical environment. Information on respiration, photosynthesis and calcification rates in a calcifying coralline alga inhabiting such dynamic environments in terms of pH and temperature is important in order to better understand how ocean acidification and warming will affect coralline algae in the future. 相似文献
Abstract. 1. Choosing the plant on which to lay their eggs is the last act of care that most female herbivorous insects bestow upon their offspring. These decisions play a pivotal role in insect–plant interactions, placing host preference under strong selection and contributing to the diversity of phytophagous insects as one of the first traits to adapt to new hosts. 2. This study presents a test of whether extreme isolation and exposure to different host plants can produce intra-specific divergence in oviposition preference in alpine insects. Geographic variation should impose selection to fine-tune host plant ranking and specificity to the plants normally encountered, to avoid wasting time during the very limited reproductive season experienced at high altitudes. 3. Beetles from five populations of Oreina elongata differing in host availability were offered three natural hosts: Cirsium spinosissimum , Adenostyles alliariae , and Adenostyles glabra . A novel application of a continuation ratio model (logistic regression) was made to sequential no-choice experiments, combined with quasi-likelihood analysis of multiple-choice experiments. 4. The results show little geographic variation in host plant choice: all populations strongly preferred Cirsium in multiple-choice trials, and in no-choice experiments laid around 47% of their remaining eggs during each stage, almost regardless of the host present. 5. Enemy-free space seems to explain the preference for Cirsium , but isolation and exposure to different plants has clearly not caused local adaptation in host plant ranking or specificity. Reasons for this conservatism despite divergence in other characteristics are discussed. 相似文献
Three species of the red algal genus Herposiphonia (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) found in Japan are described, and taxonomic features of the genus are discussed. Herposiphonia crassa Hollenberg is reported from Japan for the first time and is characterized by thick axes (200–350 µm in diameter) and determinate branches (100–200 µm in diameter), relatively short determinate laterals (400–1200 µm in length) with a large number of periaxial cells (15–19 per segment) and three (occasionally two or four) vigorously developed (1.8–2.5 mm in length by 50–75 µm in diameter basally) trichoblasts on each determinate lateral. Herposiphonia elongata Masuda et Kogame is also reported from Japan for the first time and is characterized by the conspicuous thickening growth of cystocarp‐bearing branches and spermatangial branches with an elongated sterile tip. Some newly found features of Herposiphonia fissidentoides (Holmes) Okamura are presented: the rhizoid production from the central portion of parental periaxial cells in addition to the distal end, virtual absence of vegetative trichoblasts, production of procarpial trichoblasts and spermatangial branches on fertile determinate branches on short indeterminate laterals, cystocarps sometimes with a short spur, and extremely large tetrasporangia. 相似文献
In dense monospecific stands of plants intraspecific competition usually results in self-thinning, the concurrent increase in biomass and decrease in density over time. Self-thinning may also result in a change in the spatial pattern of individuals, but so far the spatial dynamics of marine plants has not been investigated. The brown alga Himanthalia elongata ( L.) S. F. Gray forms dense monospecific stands on many northern temperate rocky shores, and various attributes (including its simple form) facilitated the study of the spatial dynamics of this species . The spatial pattern of settling zygotes was examined in the laboratory. In the absence of water movement, substratum heterogeneity, and a point source, zygotes usually settled in clumps rather than randomly. Within the clumps zygotes appeared to be regularly distributed at a scale similar to the size of the zygotes themselves. Furthermore, the clumps themselves seemed to be regularly distributed. On the shore, well-established stands of "button-stage" Himanthalia populations were examined during a period of extensive growth and self-thinning. Individual plants were initially highly regular in spatial pattern but became less so over time. The pattern of plants dying during self-thinning was also highly regular and probably reflected existing spatial regularity. However, using a hypothesis of mortality as a random event, I found that smaller plants had a less than average survival potential, while larger plants had a greater than average chance. A consideration of the spatial pattern of plants alive at the end of the study revealed regularity at a scale of 2–7 mm but a random spatial pattern at larger scales, which might indicate a small sphere of influence of competing individuals. The best predictor of mean nearest neighbor distances in the populations was mean plant diameter . 相似文献
Ahnfeltia plicata (Hudson) Fries, the type species of Ahnfeltia Fries, is reported to be a widespread alga which is an important source of agar. However, after characterizing type material and representative populations of A. plicata, we found that several taxa usually considered to be synonyms of A. plicata instead represent separate species with differing geographic distributions. Ahnfeltia plicata sensu stricto is characterized by the development of external carposporophytes on female sori that are present only on mature axes. Pseudocarposporophytes bearing monosporangia and cortical monosporangial sori occur on both young and old axes. Characteristic vegetative features include long medullary cells and cortical growth rings. Ahnfeltia plicata s.s. is circumpolar in both hemispheres and is harvested for agar in the White Sea. Ahnfeltia setacea (Kútzing) Schmitz from the Falkland Islands, Gymnogongrus comosus Kützing from Chile and Gymnogongrus filiformis Kützing from southern Argentina appear to be synonymous with A. plicata. Ahnfeltia fastigiata (Postels et Ruprecht) Makienko, from the North Pacific, differs from A. plicata principally in the development of female sori and carposporophytes only near apices; medullary cells are shorter and cortical growth rings, cortical monosporangia and pseudocarposporophytes are not formed. It is dioecious and its life history involves the development from carpospores of a crustose Porphyrodiscus tetrasporophyte. We suggest that A. plicata var. tobuchiensis Kanno et Matsubara, the principal form of Ahnfeltia utilized for agar production in the North Pacific, represents an unattached ecad of A. fastigiata. Ahnfeltia elongata Montagne, known only from Chile and with carposporophytes restricted to main axes, is more closely related to A. plicata than to A. fastigiata. Thalli are large and regularly dichotomous, with long medullary cells, and do not form pseudocarposporophytes or monosporangia. 相似文献
Abstract: High frequency of plant regeneration from Paulownia elongata was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium and Woody Plant Medium (WPM), with appropriate supplements of growth regulators. Leaves, leaves with petioles, internodes and nodes excised from 3-month-old non-aseptically grown P. elongata were used as explants. The highest shoot regeneration efficiency (93.7 %) was obtained from the nodes of P. elongata on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/ml naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 1 mg/ml 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The highest root formation efficiency (100 %) from the regenerated shoots was obtained on WPM supplemented with 1 mg/ml indolebutyric acid (IBA). Rooted plantlets were transplanted to soil with a survival efficiency of almost 100 %. The regeneration system reported here could be useful for rapid multiplication of elite genotypes of P. elongata in a short period of time. 相似文献
An increased usage of poly‐β‐hydroxyalkanoates (PHA), for instance as bulk biodegradable and biocompatible plastics, will require a cheaper production and downstream processing. If the synthesis of this intracellular biopolyester could be combined with the production of another valuable intracellular product, the economic balance of the process could be improved. It was found that the moderately halophilic bacterium Halomonas elongata simultaneously synthesizes PHA and a protector molecule, called ectoine. Whereas the synthesis of PHA is a response to the shortage of nutrients, the production of ectoine counteracts osmotic imbalances. This behavior is in so far surprising as the conditions of a bi‐factorial stress initiate the fast simultaneous synthesis of ectoine and PHA. In the presence of 100 g/L NaCl, Halomonas elongata accumulated up to 50 % w/w PHA and up to 14 % ectoine within 2–3 days under so far non‐optimized conditions. Furthermore, it was found that other Halomonas species (e.g. Halomonas halodenitrificans and own isolates of Halomonas halodeneurihalina and Halomonas salina) were able to produce both ectoine and PHA. 相似文献
