In large cohort studies, it is common that a subset of the regressors may be missing for some study subjects by design or happenstance. In this article, we apply the multiple data augmentation techniques to semiparametric models for epidemiologic data when a subset of the regressors are missing for some subjects, under the assumption that the data are missing at random in the sense of Rubin (2004) and that the missingness probabilities depend jointly on the observable subset of regressors, on a set of observable extraneous variables and on the outcome. Computational algorithms for the Poor Man's and the Asymptotic Normal data augmentations are investigated. Simulation studies show that the data augmentation approach generates satisfactory estimates and is computationally affordable. Under certain simulation scenarios, the proposed approach can achieve asymptotic efficiency similar to the maximum likelihood approach. We apply the proposed technique to the Multi-Ethic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) data and the South Wales Nickel Worker Study data. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine whether the difference in lactate concentration in different blood fractions is of practical importance when using blood lactate as a test variable of aerobic endurance capacity. Ten male firefighters performed submaximally graded exercise on a cycle ergometer for 20-25 min. Venous and capillary blood samples were taken every 5 min for determination of haematocrit and lactate concentrations in plasma, venous and capillary blood. At the same time, expired air was collected in Douglas bags for determination of the oxygen consumption. A lactate concentration of 4.0 mmol.l-1 was used as the reference value to compare the oxygen consumption and exercise intensity when different types of blood specimen and sampling sites were used for lactate analysis. At this concentration the exercise intensity was 17% lower (P less than 0.01) when plasma lactate was compared to venous blood lactate, and 12% lower (P less than 0.05) when capillary blood lactate was used. Similar discrepancies were seen in oxygen consumption. The results illustrated the importance of standardizing sampling and handling of blood specimens for lactate determination to enable direct comparisons to be made among results obtained in different studies. 相似文献

Summary . Size-biased sampling arises when a positive-valued outcome variable is sampled with selection probability proportional to its size. In this article, we propose a semiparametric linear regression model to analyze size-biased outcomes. In our proposed model, the regression parameters of covariates are of major interest, while the distribution of random errors is unspecified. Under the proposed model, we discover that regression parameters are invariant regardless of size-biased sampling. Following this invariance property, we develop a simple estimation procedure for inferences. Our proposed methods are evaluated in simulation studies and applied to two real data analyses. 相似文献

The responses of male tsetse Glossina austeni Newstead (Diptera: Glossinidae) towards blue and white sticky legged panels, baited with odour attractants, and towards modified panels were studied in the Jozani forest of Unguja Island, Zanzibar. Increasing the height of the body of a standard panel from 30 to 60 or 90 cm, increased the catch two-fold. Increasing the height of the legs (from 15 to 60 or 120 cm) or raising the device more than 5 cm above the ground reduced the catch significantly. The legs of the panels were the preferred landing sites of the flies, irrespective of the height of the body of the panel. Acetone (300 mg/h) combined with cow urine (60-130 mg/h) significantly increased the catches two- to threefold during the rainy season, but not during the dry season. Acetone had no effect during the dry season and its effect during the rainy season was less consistent. There was no effect of octenol (2.5-12.5 mg/h), used alone or in combination with acetone. Likewise, the catch did not increase through the addition of cow sebum, pig urine (60-860 mg/h), pig urine combined with acetone and octenol. The observed seasonal differences in the response of G. austeni towards odours are discussed in relation to host location strategies. 相似文献

A non-destructive method for collecting samples for DNA analysis from the mucus of molluscs was successfully adapted for use
with the genus Ischnochiton. DNA was extracted using a Chelex-based method and the COI subunit of the mtDNA was amplified and sequenced. Sequences from the mucus were crosschecked against sequences from the foot
tissue of the same animal and were found to be identical. This method provides a non-destructive way of carrying out larger

Species distribution models are widely used to identify potential and high-quality habitat of endangered species to inform conservation decisions. However, their usefulness is constrained by the amount and quality of biodiversity data and the approaches for dealing with data deficiencies. Presence-only data, used in presence/background modelling methods, are widely available but are often affected by sampling bias. Presence/absence modelling methods are less affected by biases, but data are less common. We modelled the distribution of a widely distributed, endangered species from Australia – the greater glider – and tested how predictions were influenced by data treatment and modelling framework. We collated available species data and fitted generalized linear models and boosted regression trees using presence/absence data, as well as using an augmented dataset that included additional presences alongside absences inferred from survey data. We also fitted presence/background models, adopting three common strategies for bias correction. We compared model performance quantitatively through evaluation metrics calculated internally and on held out data, and qualitatively by identifying areas of agreement of spatial predictions. We found that presence/background models with bias correction performed better than not corrected, though evaluation metrics did not favour a single strategy. Presence/absence models outperformed presence/background models in comparable metrics and delivered different spatial predictions. Importantly, differences in spatial predictions between models had the potential to substantially alter decisions about where to protect high-quality habitat. The approach to inferring absences proved useful, as models fitted with these outperformed all other models. Dealing with sampling bias requires additional time and data management strategies, but we found that the time invested allowed improvement of models and more reliable predictions. Our results suggest that ancillary occurrence data and careful data handling can improve both presence/background and presence/absence models. 相似文献

Marine mammals play a fundamental role in the functioning of healthy marine ecosystems and are important indicator species. Studying their biology, distributions, behaviour and health are still technically and logistically demanding for researchers. However, the efforts and commitment have not been in vain, since we are witnessing constant and exponential advancement in the study of these animals, thanks to technological progress in numerous fields. These include miniaturization and performance of biologger tags, which are equipped with sensors for measuring physiological parameters, hydrophones, accelerometers, time-depth records and spatial locations; the use of high throughput ‘Next Generation’ Sequencing to gain genetic information about communities and individual species from nucleic acids in environmental samples at miniscule concentrations; through, to the possibility of monitoring species with autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles. In parallel advances in computing and statistical modelling frameworks support the analysis of increasingly large and complex data sets. In this issue, O'Mahony et al. (2024) draw from at least two of these innovations: (a) the collection of biological material retrieved from large whales' blows using a modified drone and (b) the use of the samples to infer a wide spectrum of genetic information (both nuclear and mitochondrial) about the target animal/population. The methodology is not completely novel, but the study shows an impressive advancement in the amount of data obtained compared to preceding studies using the same approach. In the wake of these promising results, future perspectives are evaluated in relation to alternative sampling methodologies currently in use. It is possible to speculate that, in the next few years, the combination of non-invasive molecular profiling and enhanced drone technology (e.g. assembling increasingly smaller components, thus expanding capacity for autonomous operation) will open up perspectives that were unimaginable at the beginning of this millennium. 相似文献
