The slowing of growth as fish age has long been believed to be related to energy expenditure for maturation, and this rationalization has been used to explain why, across nearly all fish species, the relationship between size at first maturity (Lm) and maximum (Lmax) or asymptotic length (L) is relatively constant. In contrast, the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT) postulates that (a) fish growth slows because as they grow, their two-dimensional ability to extract oxygen from the water diminishes relative to their three-dimensional weight gain, and (b) they can only invest energy for maturation if oxygen supply at their size at first maturity (Qm) exceeds that needed for maintenance metabolism (Q). It has been reported previously across dozens of marine fish species that the relationship between Qm and Q is linear and, further, it can be mathematically converted to Lm vs. L by raising both terms to the power of D (the gill surface factor), resulting in a slope of 1.36. If the GOLT is universal, a similar slope should exist for LmD vs. LD relationships for freshwater species across multiple individual populations that reside in disparate habitats, although to our knowledge this has never been evaluated. For analysis, we used existing data from previous studies conducted on 51 stream-dwelling populations of redband trout Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri, Yellowstone cutthroat trout O. clarkii bouvieri and mountain whitefish Prosopium williamsoni. The resulting LmD vs. LD slopes combining all data points (1.35) or for all species considered separately (range = 1.29–1.40) were indeed equivalent to the slope originally produced for the marine species from which the GOLT-derived relationship was first reported. We briefly discuss select papers both supporting and resisting various aspects of the GOLT, note that it could potentially explain shrinking sizes of marine fish, and call for more concerted research efforts combining laboratory and field expertise in fish growth research.  相似文献

This paper presents a hypothesis allowing us to explain the coexistence of several species (here micro-organisms) in competition on a single resource (called a substrate) in a chemostat. We introduce a new class of kinetics that does not only depend on the substrate concentration in the medium, but also on the biomass concentration. From the study of elementary interactions (i) between micro-organisms, (ii) between micro-organisms and their environment in which they grow and from simulations, we show that this modelling approach can be interpreted in terms of substrate diffusion phenomena. A rigorous study of this new class of models allows us to hypothesize that abiotic parameters can explain the fact that an arbitrarily large number of species can coexist in the presence of a unique substrate.  相似文献

In the southern part of Korup National Park, Cameroon, the mast fruitingtree Microberlinia bisulcata occurs as a codominant ingroves of ectomycorrhizal Caesalpiniaceae within a mosaic of otherwisespecies-rich lowland rain forest. To estimate the amount of carbon andnutrientsinvested in reproduction during a mast fruiting event, and the consequentialseed and seedling survival, three related field studies were made in 1995.Theseprovided a complete seed and seedling budget for the cohort. Seed productionwasestimated by counting woody pods on the forest floor. Trees produced on average26,000 (range 0–92,000) seeds/tree, with a dry mass of 16.6kg/tree. Seeds were contained in woody pods of mass 307kg/tree. Dry mass production of pods and seeds was 1034 kgha–1, equivalent to over half (55%) of annual leaflitterfall for this species, and contained 13% of the nitrogen and 21% of thephosphorus in annual leaf litterfall. Seed and young-seedling mortality wasinvestigated with open quadratsand cages to exclude vertebrate predators, at two distances from the parenttree. The proportion of seeds on the forest floor which disappeared in thefirst6 wk after dispersal was 84%, of which 26.5% was due to likelyvertebrate removal, 36% to rotting, and 21.5% to other causes. Vertebratepredation was greater close to the stem than 5 m beyond the crown(41 vs 12% of seeds disappearing) where the seed shadow was less dense.Previousstudies have demonstrated an association between mast years at Korup and highdry-season radiation before flowering, and have shown lower leaf-litterfallphosphorus concentrations following mast fruiting. The emerging hypothesis isthat mast fruiting is primarily imposed by energy limitation for fruitproduction, but phosphorus supply and vertebrate predation are regulatingfactors. Recording the survival of naturally-regeneratingM. bisulcata seedlings (6-wk stage) showed that 21% ofseedlings survived to 31 mo. A simple three-stage recruitment model wasconstructed. Mortality rates were initially high and peaked again in each ofthenext two dry seasons, with smaller peaks in the two intervening wet seasons,these latter coinciding with annual troughs in radiation. The very poorrecruitment of M. bisulcata trees in Korup, demonstratedinprevious investigations, appears not to be due to a limitation in seed oryoung-seedling supply, but rather by factors operating at theestablished-seedling stage.  相似文献

The populations of many species of sub-Arctic animals have recently ceased to fluctuate cyclically. The ultimate cause of this would seem to be changes in the weather, and the proximate cause has been credited to less winter snow allowing predators better access to their prey, thus enabling them to prevent surges in the prey's abundance. But there is evidence that this is not so; that, rather, the numbers of predators are limited by the abundance of their prey. Furthermore, there is alternative evidence that suggests that changes in the cyclical availability of food, brought about by changing weather conditions, may be dampening fluctuations in the abundance of these populations. On the wider ecological front, the evidence presented here further supports the commonality of how a shortage of food of a quality that can support breeding, not the action of predators, generally limits the abundance of populations of both prey and predator.  相似文献

Question: Our study aimed at testing to what extent water and/or nutrients affect community composition in sub‐alpine heath. We hypothesized that nutrient addition will have an overall positive effect on heath vegetation but water addition will have greater effects and will probably reinforce the effects of fertilization in drier habitat conditions. Location: Monte Rondinaio, northern Apennines, Italy (44°08’ N; 10°35’ E, ca. 1850‐1930 m a.s.l.). Methods: Nutrients and water were added during five growing seasons in two communities (HV community, moister; EV community, drier) and the biomass of all species was estimated non‐destructively by the point‐quadrat method. Results: Total above‐ground biomass increased in both communities with fertilization due to increased graminoid biomass and decreased moss biomass, but was unaffected by irrigation. In the HV community species richness decreased as an effect of fertilization while in the EV community species richness was raised by irrigation. Conclusions: Our study partly supported our hypothesis since water addition had a stronger effect in the drier community. However, this effect was not revealed by changes in above‐ground biomass but rather by differing responses of individual species in the two communities.  相似文献

综述了小型哺乳动物持续能量收支限制的研究概况和进展。最大持续能量收支在决定物种的地理分布、生存适应、繁殖成功等方面都具有重要意义,但在许多条件下受到限制。食物的丰富度,或者动物自身的摄食、消化和吸收能力似乎不是主要限制因素。持续能量收支可能被外周组织和器官消耗能量的能力限制,即"外周限制"假说;或者机体的散热能力所限制,即"热耗散限制"假说。动物也可能通过衡量季节性繁殖投资的价值,实现最大繁殖输出,即"季节性投资"假说。尽管这些假说得到了一些研究的证实,但仍未阐明持续能量收支限制的机理。本文对相关研究的发展方向进行了展望。  相似文献

A mixed community of bacteria from surface runoff waters of the Hyde Park industrial landfill was enriched on 3-chlorobenzoate. Alcaligenes and Pseudomonas species were dominant in the community. Alcaligenes sp. BR60 carried an unstable plasmid specifying 3-chlorobenzoate catabolism. Metabolites detected in culture supernatants included chlorocatechol and chloro-cis,cis-muconic acid. Oxygen uptake in the presence of 3- and 4-substituted methyl-catechols revealed a catechol-1,2-oxygenase activity specific for substituted catechols with very limited activity for catechol. The isolate grew very slowly on benzoate. Alcaligenes sp. BR60 was isolated in co-culture with Pseudomonas fluorescens NR52. The latter contained no detectable plasmids and did not grow on benzoate or any of the chlorobenzoates in pure culture. Growth of the co-culture in Bloody Run Creek water supplemented with 3-chlorobenzoate indicated that phosphate concentrations in the water severely limited biodegradation. Under phosphate limited conditions in continuous culture, Pseudomonas fluorescens NR52 effectively scavenged available phosphate when it was present at a ratio of 1 cell to 20 of Alcaligenes sp. BR60. Under these conditions the growth of Alcaligenes sp. BR60 on 3-chlorobenzoate was reduced 5 fold, the frequency of plasmid deletion mutants increased, and 96% of the contaminant remained in the outflow in the form of the starting material or metabolites. No evidence was found for conjugation of the plasmid determining chlorobenzoate catabolism in Alcaligenes sp. Photosynthetic performance under dynamic light regimes was assessed in four different species of tropical shrubs from the family Rubiaceae via field gas exchange measurements conducted on Barro Colorado Island, Panamá. Rates of photosynthetic induction and induction loss were assessed throughout the day in both the wet and dry seasons in order to determine the relative roles of stomata and biochemistry in limiting photosynthetic performance under transient light conditions. A high degree of coordination was observed between stomatal conductance and biochemical capacity for CO2 assimilation during induction. Rates of biochemical and overall photosynthetic induction sharply decreased when initial stomatal conductance fell below a narrow range of critical values. Time of day or season did not affect rates of biochemical deactivation upon shading, but did influence stomatal closure, which often exerted a significant influence over induction loss in the darkness. In measurements of total assimilation due to a 60-s light pulse, both biochemical activity and stomatal conductance were linearly related to total CO2 uptake. Only during the mornings of the wet season was stomatal conductance consistently high enough to be non-limiting to dynamic photosynthetic performance. At all other times, stomatal behavior exercised significant influence over induction times, photosynthetic induction loss, and total CO2 uptake from 60-s light pulses. Galveston Bay sediments exhibit substantial spatial and seasonal variability in rates of nitrification and aerobic methane oxidation. We examined the biogeochemical and microbiological controls on these processes using aerobic enrichment slurries. Potential aerobic methane and ammonia oxidation rates from unamended control slurries were compared to rates in slurries amended with methane, ammonium, or methane + ammonium. Bacterial community composition was monitored using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR amplified ribosomal and functional gene DNA. Potential methane and ammonia oxidation rates increased over time in sediments amended with methane and ammonium, respectively. The highest potential methane oxidation rates occurred in treatments receiving both ammonium and methane suggesting that methanotrophs in the enrichment cultures were nitrogen limited. The highest ammonia oxidation rates occurred in treatments amended with ammonium only. Treatments receiving both ammonium and methane exhibited ammonia oxidation rates and porewater ammonium concentrations similar to those measured in the unamended control suggesting that methanotrophs may have inhibited ammonia oxidation by sequestering available ammonia. Sequence analysis revealed a decrease in general bacterial community diversity over time and a shift in ammonia-oxidizing bacterial composition corresponding with methane availability. However, methanotroph community composition similarities between treatments with different relative methane oxidation rates suggest that changes in physiological activity, as well as shifts in community composition, contributed to the observed patterns in potential rates.  相似文献

A randomization procedure is proposed which allows statistical tests to be combined into a single test to maintain specified and acceptable levels of false detection. This method was applied to the problem of detecting density dependence in 135 unpublished time-series (of 10 generations) from insect populations, and to simulated density-dependent and density-independent data, so that the correctness of observed levels of detection from the published data could be verified. To allow the application of the randomization procedure to Bulmer's (1975) tests and Varley and Gradwell's (1960) test, these were recast as randomization tests. The randomization procedure was tested with 39 combinations of tests for density dependence (and limitation/attraction); it generally producedcombined tests with levels of detection that were intermediate between detection levels of the constituent tests (and hence was limite by these). The specified rate of false detection (5%) was never exceeded (by more than 1%) when combined tests were applied to time-series from a random-walk model. Two different combinations of tests produced levels of detection from the published time-series which were slightly greater than their constituent tests when they were combined into single tests. These were the randomized form of Bulmer's (1975) first test with the tests of Pollard et al. (1987) and Reddingius and den Boer (1989) with the randomized form of Bulmer's second test. The combination of Bulmer's first and Pollard et al.'s test produced a greater level of detection (21.5%) than any other single test or combination of tests. These results were confirmed by the analysis of modelled density dependent data. Although the increase in power of combinations of tests over single tests is small with the data we used, the combined tests (listed above) had rates of detection that were less influenced by the form of data (of two forms of density-dependent data) than were their constituent tests. Hence, it appears that the combined tests are of greater generality than single test statistics. The method presented here for combining several statistical tests into a single randomization test is applicable in many other areas of ecology where we wish to apply several tests and take the most probable result of these; and if the tests being conducted are, or can be expressed as, randomization tests.  相似文献
