Canopy tree recruitment is inhibited by evergreen shrubs in many forests. In the southern Appalachian mountains of the USA, thickets of Rhododendron maximum L. restrict dominant canopy tree seedling survival and persistence. Using R. maximum as a model system, we examined available light under the thickets and the photosynthetic responses of seedlings of canopy tree species. We tested the hypothesis that the additional shading from under R. maximum drives carbon gain in seedlings below the threshold for growth and survival. A reduction in light under the thicket was found where canopy openness (derived from canopy photographs) under R. maximum was half the amount measured in forest without R. maximum. R.␣maximum also reduced direct radiation by 50% and diffuse radiation by 12–29% compared to forest without the shrub layer. Mean mid-day PPFD (photosynthetically active photon flux density between 1000 and 1400 h) under R. maximum (obtained from quantum sensors) was below 10 mol m−2 s−1 on both clear and overcast days and the amount of sunflecks greater than 10 mol m−2 s−1 PPFD was only 0–20 min per day. In contrast, forest without R. maximum received a mean PPFD of 18–25 mol m−2 s−1 on clear days and a cumulative sunfleck duration of 100–220 min per day in all sky conditions. Consistent with light availability between the sites, daily carbon gain in Quercus rubra L. seedlings was lower in forest with R. maximum compared to forest where the shrub was absent. The presence of the shrub layer also significantly suppressed average mid-day photosynthesis of both Q. rubra and Prunus serotina Ehrt. seedlings on 8 out of 11 measurement dates. However, parameters derived from light response curves between seedlings growing in forest sites with or without a thicket of R. maximum was significantly different only in A
max (maximum photosynthetic rate), indicating a lack of further acclimation to the deeper shade under R. maximum. While the additional shade cast by R. maximum is sufficient to prevent the regeneration of tree seedlings under this shrub, there was sufficient heterogeneity in light under the thicket to imply that deep shade only partially explains the complete inhibition of regenerating canopy trees under R. maximum. 相似文献

The protozoon Giardia lamblia infects millions of people worldwide, most of them in underdeveloped countries, where it is frequently a hyperendemic disease. The search for an effective anti-Giardia treatment has been intense, but recurrent infections, virulence factors, and drug resistance imposed obstacles in the achievement of an efficient medication. Most papers about drug effects in Giardia are related to the trophozoite form, although viable cysts, the infective forms, are continuously eliminated in the stools during the treatment. Supported by this knowledge, we analyzed the inhibitory effects of metronidazole (MZ) and furazolidone (FZ) on the differentiation of Giardia into cysts and its viability. The presence of cavities, lamellar bodies and thread-like structures were the most frequent morphological alterations. Cytokinins inhibit hypocotyl elongation in darkness but have no obvious effect on hypocotyl length in the light. However, we found that cytokinins do promote hypocotyl elongation in the light when ethylene action is blocked. A 50% increase in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. hypocotyl length was observed in response to N6-benzyladenine (BA) treatment in the presence of Ag+. The level of the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid was strongly increased, indicating that ethylene biosynthesis was up-regulated by treatment with cytokinin. Furthermore, the effects of cytokinins on hypocotyl elongation were also tested using a series of mutants in the cascade of the ethylene-signal pathway. In the ethylene-insensitive mutants etr1-3 and ein2-1, cytokinin treatment resulted in hypocotyl lengths comparable to those of wild-type seedlings treated with both Ag+ and BA. A similar phenotypical response to cytokinin was observed when auxin transport was blocked by -naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA). Applied cytokinin largely restored cell elongation in the basal and middle parts of the hypocotyls of NPA-treated seedlings and at the same time abolished the NPA-induced decrease in indole-3-acetic acid levels. Dim light at night (dLAN) disrupts circadian organization and influences adult behavior. We examined early dLAN exposure on adult affective responses. Beginning 3 (juvenile) or 5 weeks (adolescent) of age, mice were maintained in standard light–dark cycles or exposed to nightly dLAN (5 lx) for 5 weeks, then anxiety-like and fear responses were assessed. Hypothalami were collected around the clock to assess core clock genes. Exposure to dLAN at either age increased anxiety-like responses in adults. Clock and Rev-ERB expression were altered by exposure to dLAN. In contrast to adults, dLAN exposure during early life increases anxiety and fear behavior. 相似文献

Summary Albino mice were exposed to constant light for 7 days and were then transferred to periodic light. After initial photic damage and partial cell loss, the remaining visual cells recovered and survived as a stable population. Regions of the outer nuclear layer containing 4–6 rows of nuclei were more affected than those containing 6–10 rows. Changes in the synaptic structures in the receptor terminals of these two regions were recorded after varying survival periods. Some of the rod terminals had multiple synaptic ribbons and larger numbers of horizontal cell processes and bipolar cell dendrites. The number of terminals with multiple ribbons increased during recovery in periodic light. Morphometry demonstrated that the perimeters of horizontal and bipolar cell processes within the rod terminals were significantly larger than those in age-matched control mice, especially 4 weeks after recovery; they remained significantly larger than controls after 2 and 3 months. We suggest that partial loss of rod cells within a group of cells that are synaptically related to a common bipolar or horizontal cell results in synaptic growth inside the terminals of the surviving cells. 相似文献

Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was induced in attached leaves of kiwifruit grown in natural light not exceeding a photon flux density (PFD) of 300 mol·m-2·s-1, by exposing them to a PFD of 1500 mol·m-2·s-1. The temperature was held constant, between 5 and 35° C, during the exposure to high light. The kinetics of photoinhibition were measured by chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K and the photon yield of photosynthetic O2 evolution. Photoinhibition occurred at all temperatures but was greatest at low temperatures. Photoinhibition followed pseudo first-order kinetics, as determined by the variable fluorescence (F
v) and photon yield, with the long-term steady-state of photoinhibition strongly dependent on temperature wheareas the observed rate constant was only weakly temperature-dependent. Temperature had little effect on the decrease in the maximum fluorescence (F
m) but the increase in the instantaneous fluorescence (F
o) was significantly affected by low temperatures in particular. These changes in fluorescence indicate that kiwifruit leaves have some capacity to dissipate excessive excitation energy by increasing the rate constant for non-radiative (thermal) energy dissipation although temperature apparently had little effect on this. Direct photoinhibitory damage to the photosystem II reaction centres was evident by the increases in F
o and extreme, irreversible damage occurred at the lower temperatures. This indicates that kiwifruit leaves were most susceptible to photoinhibition at low temperatures because direct damage to the reaction centres was greatest at these temperatures.
