Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was induced in attached leaves of kiwifruit grown in natural light not exceeding a photon flux density (PFD) of 300 mol·m-2·s-1, by exposing them to a PFD of 1500 mol·m-2·s-1. The temperature was held constant, between 5 and 35° C, during the exposure to high light. The kinetics of photoinhibition were measured by chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K and the photon yield of photosynthetic O2 evolution. Photoinhibition occurred at all temperatures but was greatest at low temperatures. Photoinhibition followed pseudo first-order kinetics, as determined by the variable fluorescence (F v) and photon yield, with the long-term steady-state of photoinhibition strongly dependent on temperature wheareas the observed rate constant was only weakly temperature-dependent. Temperature had little effect on the decrease in the maximum fluorescence (F m) but the increase in the instantaneous fluorescence (F o) was significantly affected by low temperatures in particular. These changes in fluorescence indicate that kiwifruit leaves have some capacity to dissipate excessive excitation energy by increasing the rate constant for non-radiative (thermal) energy dissipation although temperature apparently had little effect on this. Direct photoinhibitory damage to the photosystem II reaction centres was evident by the increases in F o and extreme, irreversible damage occurred at the lower temperatures. This indicates that kiwifruit leaves were most susceptible to photoinhibition at low temperatures because direct damage to the reaction centres was greatest at these temperatures. The results also imply that mechanisms to dissipate excess energy were inadequate to afford any protection from photoinhibition over a wide temperature range in these shade-grown leaves.Abbreviations and symbols fluorescence yield correction coefficient - F o, F m, F v instantaneous, maximum, variable fluorescence - K D, K F, K P, K T rate constants for non-radiative energy dissipation, fluorescence, photochemistry, energy transfer to photosystem I - PFD photon flux density - PSI, II photosystem I, II - i photon yield of photosynthesis (incident light)  相似文献

Light and temperature markedly influence sporangiophore development inPhycomyces blakesleeanus. Under normal conditions in the dark, low temperature drastically stimulates the production of dwarf sporangiophores (microphorogenesis) and inhibits that of giant sporangiophores (macrophorogenesis). These effects of low temperature could still be observed if applied only for a short period before sporangiophore initiation. Continuous white illumination strongly inhibits microphorogenesis and slightly stimulates macrophorogenesis. Short exposures to white light noticeably inhibit microphorogenesis and stimulate macrophorogenesis when given to mycelia grown for between 90 and 160 h at 14° C or 150 h or more at 10° C. These results indicate the existence in the mycelium of developmental stages for the regulation of sporangiophorogenesis by environmental signals.  相似文献

Effects of microsite light availability on the growth and survival of transplantedQuercus serrata Thunb. seedlings in aMiscanthus sinensis Anderss. grass canopy were investigated by a “plant's eye view” approach. Diffuse site factors, i.e., the fractional transmissions of diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density, were estimated at 15 cm aboveground in 108 microsites where the seedlings grew. Microsite diffuse site factors were significantly different between surviving and dead seedlings during the experiment period from April to October (F[1,14]=10.9, P<0.01). Relative growth rate of dry weight for individual seedlings positively depended on the diffuse site factors (r2=0.482, P<0.001 in May; r2=0.312, P<0.001 in October). Only 16 seedlings produced their second stem flush within the grass canopy. The ratio of height to dry weight of the second stem flush was significantly higher for the seedlings grew in shady microsites than for those in less shady microsites (r2=0,471, P<0.01 in May). This study suggests that the microsite heterogeneity of light availability is one of the important factors affecting the establishment of tree seedlings in patchy grasslands.  相似文献

Summary Seedlings of shade-intolerant species react to alterations of the light climate caused by their neighbors with morphological changes that may influence the pattern of resource acquisition and utilization at the whole-canopy level. One such change, the increased stem elongation rate that is triggered by low red (R, 660 nm) to far-red (FR, 730 nm) ratios (R:FR) in dense canopies, might reduce the amount of assimilates available for leaf area expansion or root growth, and in that way affect resource capture by the canopy. We have tested this hypothesis by comparing the growth of both isolated individuals and canopies of the weed Amaranthus quitensis under conditions differing only in the spectral distribution of the incident light. When canopies received the full spectrum of sunlight, the stems were a large proportion (40–57%) of total biomass. Filtering the FR waveband (and hence raising the R:FR ratio to eliminate the neighbors' proximity-signal) resulted in shorter canopies with lighter stems. However, the growth of leaves and roots was not promoted by this treatment, indicating that the opportunity cost of the assimilates invested in the stems was nil or very small. Filtering the FR had no effect on biomass accumulation when plants were grown as isolated individuals. The higher growth of the canopics under full spectrum could be due to a higher light interception or to a higher efficiency of light conversion into biomass. The first possibility is weakened by the observation that filtering the FR had no effect on the dynamics of soil covering by the crops. The second is indirectly strengthened by results of an experiment with isolated plants showing that stem elongation, stem growth, and total plant biomass can be increased by reducing the flux of R light received by the stems without affecting the light climate of the leaves. Further work is needed to distinguish between these two possibilities; whatever the cause, our results show that the elongation responses to decreased R:FR may lead to a net increase in canopy productivity, and do not necessarily have a negative impact on the growth of resource-harvesting organs.  相似文献

Summary Pseudocyphellaria dissimilis, a foliose, cyanobacterial lichen, is shown not to fit into the normal ecological concept of lichens. This species is both extremely shade-tolerant and also more intolerant to drying than aquatic lichens previously thought to be the most desiccation-sensitive of lichens. Samples of P. dissimilis from a humid rain-forest site in New Zealand were transported in a moist state to Germany. Photosynthesis response curves were generated. The effect of desiccation was measured by comparing CO2 exchange before and after a standard 20-h drying routine. Lichen thalli could be equilibrated at 15° C to relative humidities (RH) from 5% to almost 100%. Photosynthesis was saturated at a photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) level of 20 mol m-2 s-1 (350 bar CO2) and PAR compensation was a very low 1 mol m-2 s-1. Photosynthesis did not saturate until 1500 bar CO2. Net photosynthesis was relatively unaffected by temperature between 10° C and 30° C with upper compensation at over 40° C. Temporary depression of photosynthesis occurred after a drying period of 20 h with equilibration at 45–65% relative humidity (RH). Sustained damage occurred at 15–25% RH and many samples died after equilibration at 5–16% RH. Microclimate studies of the lichen habitat below the evergreen, broadleaf forest canopy revealed consistently low PAR (normally below 10–20 mol m-2 s-1) and high humidities (over 80% RH even during the day time). The species shows many features of an extremely deep shade-adapted plant including low PAR saturation and compensation, low photosynthetic and respiratory rates and low dry weight per unit area.  相似文献

Four new strains of Thiopedia rosea were isolated in pure culture from blooms of platelet-forming purple sulfur bacteria in the top layers of the anoxic hypolimnia of two freshwater lakes. Individual cells of the new strains as well as of T. rosea strain 4211 were spherical to oval, nonmotile and contained gas vesicles in the central part. The predominant photosynthetic pigments were bacteriochlorophyll a and okenone. All strains were strictly anaerobic and obligately phototrophic. Optimal growth occurred at low light intensities of 100 E · m-2 s-1 (tungsten lamp); intensities above 150 E · m-2 s-1 inhibited growth completely. Photoautotrophic growth was possible at sulfide concentrations up to 0.6 mM; higher concentrations were inhibitory. Acetate, butyrate and valerate supported photoorganotrophic growth in the presence of bicarbonate and sulfide concentrations below 1 mM. Sulfide was required as a source of cellular sulfur because assimilatory sulfate reduction is lacking. All strains were assigned to the species Thiopedia rosea with strain 4211 as a neotype.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. G. Schlegel on the occasion of his 66th birthday  相似文献

Summary Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), were exposed to constant light with increasing intensities (20, 60, 350 lux), and wheel running activity was recorded. With increasing light intensity the percentage of hamsters showing a split in their daily activity pattern increased and the free running period was lengthened for both the unsplit and the split state. The fact that the free running period of both states depended on the light intensity together with the observation that the highest incidence of acircadian activity occurred under 350 lux, provoked the idea that the emergence of splitting or acircadian rhythmicity is a direct consequence of the light induced lengthening of the free running period. However, analysis of the data failed to support the idea that emergence of a split or acircadian activity is a threshold phenomenon with respect to the free running period.Due to differences in circadian function some Djungarian hamsters do not exhibit photoinduction following short day exposure. In these individuals splitting also occurred but required exposure to a higher light intensity than in photo-responsive hamsters. This observation is in accordance with the idea that the two phenotypes differ in the interaction of the two component oscillators underlying circadian rhythmicity.Abbreviations LD long day photoperiod - LL constant light - SD short day photoperiod - free running period  相似文献

The photosynthetic and growth characteristics of Ceratophyllum demersum L. were investigated under laboratory conditions which simulated those encountered in the plants' normal environment. The carbon fixation rate of C. demersum measured with 14C at light and carbon saturation at pH 8.0 was 4.48 mg C (g ash-free dry weight)−1 h−1. It was lower at pH 6.5 than at pH 8.0. The light use efficiencies in quiescent plants and actively growing plants were 6.3 and 8.7 × 10−9 kg CO2 J−1, respectively, with corresponding maximum photosynthetic rates of 2.67 and 4.36 mg C (g ash-free dry weight)−1 h−1. Photorespiration in actively growing plants consumed 24% of the carbon fixed. Incubation with DCMU demonstrated that about one-third was refixed. The optimum temperature for carbon fixation was 25°C. The C3-photosynthetic pathway was the main operational route as indicated by the early photosynthetic products (largely C3-acids) and the absence of Krantz anatomy and the chlorophyll a:b ratio (2.7). The maximum relative growth rates ranged from 0.025 to 0.041 g ash-free dry weight (g ash-free dry weight)−1 day−1 in the field (Lake Vechten, 1 to 3 m depth classes).  相似文献
