Summary Computer simulations were used to assess the influence of palmate leaf morphology, decussate phyllotaxy, and the elastic moduli of petioles on the capacity of turgid and wilted twigs ofAesculus hippocastanum to intercept direct solar radiation. Leaf size, morphology, orientation, and the Young's and shear moduli (E and G) of petioles were measured and related to leaf position on 8 twigs whose cut ends were placed in water (turgid twigs) and 8 twigs dried for 8 h at room temperature (wilted twigs). Petioles mechanically behaved as elastic cantilevered beams; the loads required to shear petioles at their base from twigs were correlated with the cross-sectional areas of phyllopodia but not with petiole length or tissue volume. Empirically determined morphometric and biomechanical data were used to construct average turgid and wilted twigs. The diurnal capacity to intercept direct sunlight for each was simulated for vertically oriented twigs for 15 h of daylight, 40° N latitude. The daily integrated irradiance (DII) of the wilted twig was roughly 3% less than that of the otherwise comparable twig bearing turgid leaves. Simulations indicated that the orientation of turgid leaves did not maximize DII. More decumbent (wilted) petioles increased DII by as much as 4%. Reduction in the girth, E, or G of petioles, or an increase in petiole length or the surface area of laminae (with attending increase in laminae weight), increased petiolar deflections and DII. Thus, the mechanical design of petioles ofA. hippocastanum was found not to be economical in terms of investing biomass for maximum light interception.  相似文献

Summary Mangroves have similar xanthophyll cycle components/chlorophyll ratios [i.e. (V+A+Z)/chl] to other plant species. (V+A+Z)/chl ratios were sensitive to the light environment in which leaves grew, decreasing as light levels decreased over a vertical transect through a forest canopy. The (V+A+Z)/chl ratio also varied among species. However, in sun leaves over all species, the (V+A+Z)/chl ratios correlate with the proportion of leaf area displayed on a horizontal plane, which is determined by leaf angle. Thus, leaf angle and the xanthophyll cycle may both be important in providing protection from high light levels in mangrove species. A canopy survey assessed whether (V+A+Z)/chl ratios could be correlated with species dominance of exposed positions in forest canopies.Rhizophora mangroves, with near-vertical leaf angles, andBruguiera parviflora, with small, horizontal, xanthophyllrich leaves, dominated the canopy, whileB. gymnorrhiza, a species with large, horizontally arranged leaves, was less abundant at the top of the canopy. Thus, two different strategies for adapting to high solar radiation levels may exist in these species. The first strategy is avoidance through near vertical leaf angles, and the second is a large capacity to dissipate energy through zeaxanthin. The (V+A+Z)/chl ratio was also negatively correlated with the epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pool (the proportion present as violaxanthin and half that present as antheraxanthin) at midday. This suggested that the requirement for dissipation of excess light (represented by the midday epoxidation state) may influence the (V+A+Z)/chl ratio.  相似文献

Summary Irradiance level and grazer density were manipulated in a factorial design to examine the relative effects of biotic and abiotic factors on periphyton biomass, productivity, and taxonomic structure in a heavily grazed, woodland stream. Irradiance levels were increased from 0.26 to 12.42 mol quanta/m2/d by placing metal halide lamps over the stream. The major grazer in this system was the prosobranch snail Elimia clavaeformis. Its densities were reduced from ca. 750 individuals/m2 to near zero by raising platforms off the stream bottom. Experimental treatments were maintained for 48 days. Biomass-specific carbon fixation rates increased significantly in response to higher light levels, indicating that periphyton communities were light-limited at this time of year. However, positive effects of irradiance on areal-specific carbon fixation and biomass were detected only when grazer density was reduced. Basal cells of the chlorophyte Stigeoclonium dominated communities exposed either to low light or high grazing pressure. When light was increased and grazer density reduced, large or upright diatoms became more abundant. Results from this study indicated that limitation of periphyton photosynthesis could be mitigated by increasing the levels of an abiotic resource (light) to this system, but that periphyton biomass was controlled by biotic interactions.  相似文献

In 4-d-old dark-grown oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings, the majority of the type-I-phytochrome (phyA) mRNA was found within 10 mm of the tip of the coleoptile sheath and in the mesocotyl node; almost none was detected in the enclosed primary leaf. In contrast, chlorophyll-a/b-binding-protein (cab) mRNAs were found almost exclusively in the enclosed primary leaf and were barely detectable in total-RNA samples from the coleoptile sheath or mesocotyl node of red-light-treated etiolated seedlings. Thioredoxin (Td) f from pea (Pisum sativum L.) leaves was purified by a simple method, which provided a high yield of homogeneous Td f. Purified Td f had an isoelectric point of 5.4 and a relative molecular mass (Mr) of 12 kilodaltons (kDa) when determined by filtration through Superose 12, but an Mr of 15.8 kDa when determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified protein remained fully active for several months when conserved frozen at — 20° C. The pea protein was able to activate fructose1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase; EC 3.1.3.11), but in contrast to other higher-plant Td f proteins, was not functional in the modulation of NADP+-malate dehydrogenase activity. In spite of the absence of immunological cross-reactions of pea and spinach Td f proteins with the corresponding antibodies, pea Td f activated not only the homologous FBPase, but also the spinach enzyme. The saturation curves for pea FBPase, either with fructose-1,6-bisphosphate in the presence of different concentrations of homologous Td f, or with pea Td f in the presence of excess substrate, showed sigmoid kinetics; this can be explained on the basis of a random distribution of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate, and of the oxidized and reduced forms of the activator, among the four Td f- and substrate-binding sites of this tetrameric enzyme. From the saturation curves of pea and spinach Td f proteins against pea FBPase, a 4:1 stoichiometry was determined for the Td f-enzyme binding. This is in contrast to the 2:1 stoichiometry found for the spinach FBPase. The UV spectrum of pea Td f had a maximum at 277 nm, which shifted to 281 nm after reduction with dithiothreitol (s at 280 nm for 15.8-kDa Mr = 6324 M–1 · cm–1). The fluorescence emission spectrum after 280-nm excitation had a maximum at 334 nm, related to tyrosine residues; after denaturation with guanidine isothiocyanate an additional maximum appeared at 350 nm, which is concerned with tryptophan groups. Neither the native nor the denatured form showed a significant increase in fluorescence after reduction by dithiothreitol, which means that the tyrosine and tryptophan groups in the reduced Td f are similarly exposed. Chapman C. B. and Mitchell G. F. 1982. Fasciola hepatica: comparative studies on fascioliasis in rats and mice. International Journal for Parasitology12: 81–91. Certain characteristics of infection differ between rats and mice exposed to metacercariae of the trematode parasite, Fasciola hepatica. Rats develop a degree of age-related resistance (and infected older females contain fewer parasites than older males), resistance to reinfection in infected rats is demonstrated readily though is partial, and a comparable degree of resistance can be obtained in recipients of infected rat serum provided the serum is given at about the time of challenge. None of these features of F. hepatica infection is seen in mice. Rats also differ from mice in that they can be vaccinated against infection (although again, resistance is incomplete) using larval antigen mixtures in adjuvants. Mice do respond to infection by production of antilarval antibodies and a slight IgG1 hypergammaglobulinaemia and larvae will sensitize mice for delayed hypersensitivity. The results of this study indicate that sera from infected rats versus infected mice will be useful in pinpointing antigens of F. hepatica larvae which are involved in expression of partial host protection.  相似文献

Summary Lowland rice (RD 3) was cultivated in containers of clay soil submerged with 5 cm water under controlled conditions in the phytotron. Deep placement of urea supergranules 5 cm in the soil significantly enhanced both plant growth and fertilizer efficiency when the plants were cultivated under high light intensity (70 Wm–2). At the highest urea level grain yield increased 119% above the control level, while growth and fertilizer efficiency was not as high when deep placement of calcium nitrate was used.The application of urea prills and calcium nitrate (18.4g Nm–2) in two split doses on the soil surface increased grain yield as much as 91% above the control level. At the lower nitrogen concentration (9.2 g N m–2), the urea prills were more efficient than calcium nitrate as indicated by the grain yield. The height of those plants fertilized by surface application was affected by the concentration and not the type of fertilizer. The number of tillers, however, was significantly higher on urea fertilized plants.When the rice plants were cultivated under low light intensity 930 Wm–2), neither the nitrogen fertilizers nor the method of application had a significant effect on growth and yield.  相似文献

Summary The effect of assortative mating on the genetic correlation between traits X and Y is considered. Assortation on trait X changes the magnitude of the genetic correlation but not its sign. There are two situations depending on the signs of the correlation between mates () and of the random mating genetic correlation (): 1) if sign () = sign (), then >, where is the genetic correlation at equilibrium after continued assortation, and 2) if sign () = sign (), then < . However, negative assortative mating is virtually powerless to alter the magnitude of the genetic correlation. The consequences of a mixed assortation model, e.g., high milk production females mated to fast growing males and lesser productive females mated to slower growing sires, were also studied. Mixed positive assortation always increases the genetic correlation, but negative assortation decreases it. The implications of assortative mating on correlated responses to selection and on the equilibrium covariances between relatives for pairs of traits are discussed.  相似文献

Using sodium-dithionite as an oxygen scavenger, the influences of different light intensities and periods of anaerobic pre-incubation in the dark on H2-photoproductivity were studied with the green algaChlorella fusca. By measuring hydrogen production in the light using manometric and gas chromatographic methods the effectiveness of sodium dithionite in stabilizing photoproduction was established. For high rates of H2-photoproduction high light intensities up to 30,000 lux (580 W m-2) were necessary; these are comparable to those required for light saturation of oxygen photoproduction by this alga. AlthoughChlorella fusca produces H2 immediately after transition to anaerobic conditions, the optimum rate of H2 production was reached after a 5 h dark adaptation period only. The results obtained are discussed with respect to characteristics of H2-photoproduction by green algae: the initial burst kinetics, the light saturation, and the obligate period of anaerobic adaptation.
