Coexistence of competitors in metacommunities due to spatial variation in resource growth rates; does R * predict the outcome of competition? 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Simple mathematical models are used to investigate the coexistence of two consumers using a single limiting resource that is distributed over distinct patches, and that has unequal growth rates in the different patches. Relatively low movement rates or high demographic rates of an inefficient resource exploiter allow it to coexist at a stable equilibrium with a more efficient species whose ratio of movement to demographic rates is lower. The range of conditions allowing coexistence depends on the between‐patch heterogeneity in resource growth rates, but this range can be quite broad. The between‐patch movement of the more efficient consumer turns patches with high resource growth rates into sources, while low‐growth‐rate patches effectively become sinks. A less efficient species can coexist with or even exclude the more efficient species from the global environment if it is better able to bias its spatial distribution towards the source patches. This can be accomplished with density independent dispersal if the less efficient species has a lower ratio of per capita between‐patch movement rate to demographic rates. Conditions that maximize the range of efficiencies allowing coexistence of two species are: a relatively high level of heterogeneity in resource growth conditions; high dispersal (or low demographic rates) of the superior competitor; and low dispersal (or high demographic rates) of the inferior competitor. High ratios of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) have been suggested to favor the growth of the brown tide alga Aureococcus anophagefferens. DON could provide a particular advantage in low light levels, as occur when blooms induce self-shading. We examined the effects of varying DON:DIN ratios on the photosynthetic abilities of cultured Aureococcus at two light intensities, 93 and 17 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Glutamic acid and urea were used as DON sources, and the remainder of the nitrogen was added as nitrate.In experiments examining Aureococcus growth with varying ratios of DONGlu:DINNitrate at two light intensities in batch culture, higher growth rates and biomass were observed in treatments containing DIN than in those with DON only, which contrasts with the results of previous studies. In semi-continuous growth experiments with varying DONUrea:DINNitrate ratios, low light cultures with urea had higher growth rates than those without urea. Also, the effective target area for light absorption per cell and photosystem II efficiency were greater for the low light cultures of each nutrient treatment, particularly when DON:DIN mixtures (33 and 67% NUrea) were used. The same pattern was seen in the maximum photosynthetic rates per cell in the light-saturated (Pmcell) and in the initial slope (αcell) of the PE (photosynthesis versus irradiance) curve, and in PON, POC and chlorophyll a cell−1. This indicates that the ability of Aureococcus to acclimate to low light conditions may be enhanced by the presence of both organic and inorganic nitrogen sources. These results suggest that Aureococcus physiology and photosynthesis are different during growth on a mixture of urea-N and nitrate than when either nitrogen source is present alone. Results of this study suggest that Aureococcus may not respond to all DON substrates in the same way, and that mixtures of DON and DIN may provide for higher photosynthetic rates, especially at low light. Our results did not, however, support earlier suggestions that growth on DON alone provides the brown tide alga with a large advantage at low light levels. 相似文献

Body mass can impact reproductive performance in males and females. In nonhuman primates the relationship is often mediated by dominance. We measured body mass monthly in a provisioned group of bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) living at a Hindu temple. We also measured body mass on 3 occasions in a wild population of bonnet macaques. In the temple group, females that reproduced lost body mass, while females that did not reproduce gained body mass. Mass loss among females occurred primarily while they were nursing. Adult males from the temple group lost mass during the mating season and gained it during the non-mating season. Subadult males experienced less seasonal variation in body mass. Body mass and changes in mass were not related to dominance rank in either the temple or the forest group. Furthermore, maternal dominance rank did not affect infant mass. Females from the smallest forest group weighed significantly less than females from the two larger forest groups, which suggests intergroup competition in the population. Body mass was not related to dominance rank in a straightforward manner but may indirectly affect reproductive performance. The pattern of body mass change suggests that the period of lactation is critical for females and endurance rivalry is an important form of competition among males. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is an invasive species of south-eastern U.S.A. Since its introduction from South America approximately 70 years ago, this pest has devastated natural biodiversity.
2. Due to such ecological costs, Pseudacteon phorid fly parasitoids (Diptera: Phoridae) from South America are being introduced into the U.S.A. as a potential biological control agent. Here, the indirect effects of these specialised parasitoids on an interspecific native ant competitor, Forelius mccooki (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), are evaluated.
3. Over the course of a 50-day laboratory experiment, the results show that the native ant improved aspects of exploitative, but not interference, competition when S. invicta -attacking flies were present compared with when they were absent.
4. Forelius mccooki colonies from the phorid treatment had approximately twice as many foragers at food baits relative to controls; however, there was no significant difference in interference aspects of competition or native ant colony growth between the two treatments.
5. These results suggest that the S. invicta -specialised parasitoids help shift the competitive balance more in favour of F. mccooki than if these flies were not present; however, this competitive advantage does not translate into increased colony growth after 50 days. Large-sized Daphnia hyalina×galeata hybrid and small-sized Ceriodaphnia reticulata were raised together for 3 weeks in thermally stratified flow-through tubes ('plankton organ'), in the presence and the absence of fish kairomone, and their relative performance was monitored, as indicated by the populations' growth rates (r). In the kairomone-free medium, D. hyalina grew faster than C. reticulata; the presence of kairomone reversed this ratio, producing relatively higher r in C. reticulata. The simulated fish presence reduced growth in D. hyalina population also when it was separated from the competitor, while growth in C. reticulata was altered by the kairomone only in the presence of Daphnia. It is suggested that costs of surface avoidance in Daphnia can reduce its competitive superiority to small-sized cladocerans, permanently dwelling at the surface. 相似文献
